Tidigare statliga angelägenheter som post, järnväg, el och telefoni skulle nu ut på den fria marknaden.Idag, flera decennier senare, genomsyrar marknaden det mesta i vår vardag. Allt från hur våra pensioner förvaltas, till utbud av apotek, skolor och sjukvård, men också vårt sätt att se på oss själva och våra valmöjligheter. Samtidigt växer kritiken mot marknaden. Hur stark är idén om marknaden idag? Vad skulle alternativen kunna vara?I början av 1700-talet skrev filosofen Bernard Mandeville The Fable of the Bees, där han beskrev ett bisamhälle som blomstrade så länge varje bi drevs av sitt egenintresse, men när bina blev ärliga och dygdiga förtvinade bisamhället. Both of these gentlemen can command the armed forces of their respective countries to battle simply for the pleasure of beating the other. And the Musketeers must serve and risk life and limb at the siege of La Rochelle, a place where the Duke and the Cardinal have chosen to match wills.In this age it was common for young cavaliers to live off the gifts of rich mistresses, and the four friends are certainly, it seems, bereft otherwise, although all are respectably employed as guardsmen to the King himself. Their love connections weave a further web about them which often seems to sidetrack their duty to King and country.It takes all the efforts of the four to fend off the lethal consequences of mixing in the affairs of their betters and the slings and arrows (not to mention the musket and cannon balls!) of their outrageous fortunes. Ces adaptations ont contribué à faire de D'Artagnan et ses compagnons des personnages de fiction presque légendaires. Mais que connaissez-vous du vrai d'Artagnan, celui qui a commencé sa carrière sous Louis XIII, qui a servi personnellement Louis XIV ? Dans ce récit inédit en deux parties, Virginie Girod vous raconte son histoire !À l'aube du XVIIe siècle, la Gasconne est une région pauvre. Même la noblesse y est modeste. C'est là, dans le château de Castelmore, que le Charles de Batz de Castelmore, le futur D'Artagnan, grandit. Vers l'âge de 18 ans, les garçons de la région montent à Paris pour faire carrière, gagner de l'argent, se couvrir d'honneur et si possible, faire un mariage avantageux. Le jeune Charles rêve de devenir mousquetaire. Fondése par le roi Louis XIII en 1622, les mousquetaires sont un corps militaire d'élite directement au service du roi. Ils tirent leur nom de l'imposante arme à feu qu'ils manient : le mousquet.Charles Batz de Castelmore monte donc à Paris dans le courant des années 1630 pour y rencontrer le capitaine-lieutenant des mousquetaires. Monsieur de Tréville l'envoie d'abord se former chez les cadets. Au bout de quelques années, le petit Gascon réalise enfin son rêve : monsieur de Tréville l'incorpore aux mousquetaires.C'est à cette époque qu'on commence à l'appeler d'Artagnan, nom qui lui vient de la famille de sa mère. Mais il ne rejoindra jamais Athos, Portos et Aramis. Selon les archives, il y aurait bien trois hommes qui répondent à des noms proches de ceux-là mais ils sont bien plus âgés que d'Artagnan. Ce dernier s'impose comme un homme de confiance de la famille royale, qui traverse une période difficile à la mort de Louis XIII. Son fils qui lui succède, le jeune Louis XIV, n'a que 5 ans. La reine Anne d'Autriche prend la régence et s'appuie sur le cardinal de Mazarin pour gouverner. Mais ils doivent bientôt faire face à la Fronde, une rébellion simultanée de la bourgeoisie et de l'aristocratie, qui demandent moins d'impôts et plus de pouvoirs.C'est D'Artagnan qui assure la sécurité du jeune Louis XIV, notamment lors de l'épisode de la nuit des rois, où la famille royale doit fuir Paris pour se réfugier à Saint Germain en Laye. La Fronde est matée en 1653 et l'année suivante, d'Artagnan a le privilège d'assister au sacre de Louis XIV à Reims.
