The word ‘legend' gets bandied around a lot these days, but former footy superstar Ken Hunter most certainly IS a bona fide legend, and he's our special guest on the Food Bytes podcast this week. Skilful, feared and fearless, the Carlton great was known for his spectacular marks, and for going in where angels fear to tread! We talk to Ken about his playing days, how Aussie Rules footy has changed, his work in the mental health space with the Fifth Quarter Foundation, and why Italian food is always on the menu at his house! And in the Friday Food Poll this week … the beef burger and the vegie burger go head to head. Our extra seat at the Food Bytes table is Dr Anthony Dowling, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Melbourne and a Consultant Medical Oncologist at St Vincent's Public Hospital Melbourne talking about the important work he is doing in cancer treatment and the role the wig and headwear studio has in patient wellbeing.    Here is the link to donate to he St. Vincent's Public Hospital Wig and Headware Studio.   https://www.stvfoundation.org.au/donate/wigs Presented by Sarah Patterson & Kevin Hillier Broadcast each Sunday on the ACE Radio Network - https://aceradio.com.au/ Catch us also on: The Buzzz - Melbourne's Home of Classic Hits - thebuzzz.com.au Radio 2DD - Easy Listening - On Line - https://www.2dd.online/ Radio Bayside - Stream.radiobayside.com  Follow us on Facebook...https://www.facebook.com/foodbyteswithsarahpatterson/ Twitter & Instagram - @sarahfoodbytes Post-production by Chris Gates  for Howdy Partners Media | www.howdypartnersmedia.com.au/podcasts © 2024See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ken Hunter still remembers the night he pulled a kitchen knife to stop his dad hitting his mom. What came next was even more extreme, although for anyone growing up in southwestern Detroit, it was normal. The court provided Ken with some solace, and he quickly grew into a top prospect, attending the same school where Jalen Rose had won a state title. When his football coach kicked his butt for skipping school, Ken also became a standout student, even while living off friends' couches and with his grandma.A run-in with the law landed Ken in the courtroom, and seemingly heading for jail. But a mentor went all Good Will Hunting and convinced the judge to expunge his record if he served in the military. Once he got out, Ken picked up a ball for the first time in two years and played at LA Trade Tech. Feeling at ease for the first time in his, he helped turn a losing program into a winning one, including a statement win over East LA College. But wrestling with his roommate snapped something in Ken's spine and he was instantly paralyzed.Falling back in with his OGs back in Detroit, Ken was so depressed he called his wife and said he wanted to die. But his college coach brought him back to the West Coast as an assistant, and taught him the coaching trade over 13 years. Then, fittingly, his time as a lead recruiter started where his playing days had dramatically ended: ELAC. Since then, he has worked closely with Coach John Mosley to lead young men to D1 scholarships and faith on the court and leadership off it – as shown on camera in Last Chance U Basketball on Netflix. He is also involved in many charitable causes throughout LA and back in Detroit, and is a devoted father of five, husband, and now grandfather. In this episode, Ken comes in hot about:·       How his uncle shot his father in the head and what happened next·       Why he turned to basketball for solace·       How he turned paralysis into a blessing·       Why he has such a heart for young men from inner cities·       What drives he and Coach Mosley to deliver daily servant leadershipKeep up with Ken on his Instagram feed @coach_ken_last_chance_u and follow ELAC basketball's progress at https://www.elacathletics.com/sports/mbkb/coaches/index

Coach John Mosley can still remember the day his life changed forever. Gang members fired bullets outside his Los Angeles high school in a drive-by shooting, and Mosley was on his way to get revenge. But as he was about to jump in his friend's car, he asked himself, “What am I doing?” Soon afterwards, two words took him down a different path: “Basketball tryouts.” Mosley came late to the game, but his stellar point guard play earned him minutes at East LA College (ELAC), The Master's College (now University) and with pro teams in Brazil and Australia. Next, he went back to guide the Mustangs on the sidelines with Coach Keith Oates and then took the assistant coach position at Cal State Bakersfield with Keith Brown. His other alma mater, ELAC, came calling, and Mosley took his first head coaching job, believing he'd just be there for a year before accepting a D1 offer. Yet 11 seasons later, he feels called to remain at ELAC to develop troubled young men as players and people. Just before the pandemic, his squad got international airtime in season 1 of Last Chance U Basketball. Though COVID robbed them of a state title, KJ Allen, Deshaun Highler, and Joe Hampton became stars. In season 2, Coach Mosley and his assistants Ken Hunter and Rob Robinson guided a new crew led by Bryan Penn-Johnson, Dez Washington, Shemar Washington and Demetrius "DC" Calip II to D1 and D2 scholarships, and ELAC won the conference title.  In this episode, Coach Mosley shares:How faith and basketball saved his lifeWhy growing up in a tough neighborhood prepared him to lead young menWhen he almost turned down NetflixHow he and his kids survived a terrible car wreckWhy he continues to turn down offers from prestigious programs to serve at ELACHow his father passing unexpectedly galvanized his missionWhy impacting lives is even more important than winning games or trophiesLearn more from Coach Mosley at his website, https://coachjohnmosley.com/ and on Instagram @coachjohnmosley

Truth of the Spirit encourages you pray for yourself and others so to give glory to God and serve your brothers and sisters in Christ. Be forgiving towards the mistakes and weakness and failings of those around you and of your own. Jesus’ forgiveness is an example to follow. “Father, forgive them; they know not what they do.” Pray! Truth of the Spirit episode ‘Recognizing God’s Voice’ hosted by Patti Brunner provides several spiritual exercises for listening to the Lord. Please know that the Lord wants you to hear his voice. Mostly it is the ability to discern God’s voice that the people need help—He speaks to you all the time. If you do not spend time getting to know the Lord in prayer and sacred scripture you cannot recognize his voice. You know the voice of family members because you hear them often when you know it’s them. It’s the same thing with the Lord. We can become most familiar with God’s voice by reading scripture. Truth of the Spirit with Patti Brunner welcomes Ken Hunter, a deaconate candidate, as he shares (1) the Biblical Roots of Holy Orders, (2) about two priesthoods: the “priesthood of all the faithful” and the “priesthood of the ordained” (3) the origin of Bishop, Priest and Deacon, (4) who may be ordained and (5) the effects/graces of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Holy Orders is not like “military orders”. Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles is continued to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. It is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. Through it, men are marked with an indelible character and constituted Sacred ministers – in three degrees: bishops, priests and deacons–to teach, sanctify, and govern the faithful in the person of Christ the Head. The priesthood of the Old Covenant finds its perfect fulfillment in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, who is the one Mediator between God and us. “Jesus’ sacrifice of himself on the Cross is a priestly act of perfect self-offering accepted by the Father and culminating in his Resurrection from the dead so that, as Risen Lord and High Priest, he continues to offer salvation to all”. This is the sixth episode of the continuing Truth of the Spirit series “The Eucharist and Other Sacraments”.

Truth of the Spirit with Patti Brunner welcomes Ken Hunter for this episode of Praying the Scriptures as the series on Prayer-Reaching Out to God continues.  Praying scripture is not new – it dates back to the early Church, and even back to the Jews.  Scripture is sacred, significant.  “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16.  “But he answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4.  This refers to Deuteronomy 8:3.  “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” Proverbs 30:5.  Next, we should notice that the early church prayed the Scriptures in Acts 4:24 and following. In fact, they explicitly quote Scriptures.   Praying scripture focuses on two aspects: Participation and Full Communication.  A daily way to pray the scriptures is with the Liturgy of the Hours and another way is Lectio Divina.  Ken gives instruction and samples of these and shares how, as a discerning member of the diocesan deaconate class, he uses the scripture to pray.

Truth of the Spirit welcomes Ken Hunter as he completes part 2 of his talk “Winning the Battle” as we wrap up the series on the Armor of God with a closing by Lissa Applewhite.  Advance your spiritual journey.  That which does not grow, stagnates.   Lots of people complain, say “somebody should do something” – well, be part of it!  Recognize the battles in our lives.  Morals are not defined by us.   They are inherent – but can fool ourselves.  Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, but don’t do as I say?”  We say “Lord AND Savior” and just focus on the Savior part.  Is He your Lord or not?   Live as we want the world to be, as we want eternity to be, as Christ instructed us to be.  Trust in the Lord – stand on firm ground.  Don’t believe the lies.  Allow the Lord to fight for us.  Realize our role; we are all in the fight for salvation – everyone, whether they think it or not, want it or not.  Change the world by changing our country; change our country by changing your state.  Change your town by changing your family.  Change your family by allowing the Lord to change you.

Truth of the Spirit welcomes Ken Hunter as he discusses Winning the Battle as we wrap up the series on the Armor of God.  This episode is the first part of his talk. We talk about Spiritual Warfare, but what really is the War?  Simply: Good vs Evil, God’s plan vs Satan’s attempting thwarting of that plan.  What’s at stake: Salvation & eternal life, uniting with God in Heaven or being isolated in the despair of Hell – it’s just that straightforward.  Think of this: Jesus mentions hell and Satan more than any other part of Bible.  THE GOOD NEWS is that we’ve won the war – Satan is defeated.  The power is Good is vastly more powerful than that of Evil.  By why then is there still a battle?  Sin keeps us from our salvation – we choose or reject our participation in the victory.  People say sin doesn’t impact the world, that’s just such a blatant lie.  More of the dark victories are in the subtler aspects, hidden in the undercurrents.

Andy Ockershausen: Yes occasionally, particularly on snowy days, I'd buy pizza for the group. They were low lifes, I didn't want to spend time with them. They were talent and engineers and news people, I wanted to spend my time with leaders. Burt Cohen (laughing) Andy Ockershausen: So, I couldn't find a leader. So I spent my time at Alfios. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: We just spent the last couple of minutes with Ken, playing some bloopers,

Our Town with host Andy Ockershausen - Homegrown History

Thanksgiving 2017 With gratitude Janice and Andy Ockershausen Andy and Janice Ockershausen, Our TownAndy Ockershausen: Our Town, Thanksgiving 2017. Janice Ockershausen and I want to take this time to thank all of those who have made this podcast so special. To name names, like Bill Brower from GEICO, who is our underwriter. Thank you to Ken Hunter, technical director par excellence, and image director JJ Surma. To the staff at WMLA Radio. To our Best Bark communications producer Stephanie Colli, and especially to Rose Caplan, our operations manager. It seems like it does take a village, Janice Ockershausen. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Yes it does, as quoted by Hillary Clinton. Andy Ockershausen: Our first anniversary with September, and with over 125 interviews under our belt, and 50 more to come at least, we have thousands and thousands of people listening. It's been unbelievable to me how this listenership has taken off. It's been a great experience for us to catch up with old friends, and to make new relationships with the incoming leadership of Our Town. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Season 3 is going to be a great surprise. We have a lot of new faces in town that we're welcoming, that you'll easily identify with. Andy Ockershausen: Yeah, but we got the old ones too. That's what makes this whole effort so great to both of us. We grew up, a lot of these names, and a lot of these names we didn't even know until we brought them into Our Town. It's been remarkable to both of us, the feedback we get from you. What you listen to, and what you like, and don't like about what we're doing, and who you like to hear from. You speak up, and that's what makes this podcast so special. We've tried to present an interesting collection of Washingtonians who have touched our lives in one way or another, through their presence in sports, news, government, or the arts. Most of all, at this time of Thanksgiving, we're very grateful for the opportunity to say thank you for listening. For commenting, for suggesting, and for the rave reviews, and ratings that we've been receiving. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: While you're making your turkey at the holiday season, make sure you catch up on all episodes of Our Town. You can share it with the people that maybe are revisiting the DC area, or new family members that you'd like to turn onto. It's a great opportunity when you're driving, on your long drive and all the traffic, to listen to the podcast through your Bluetooth system on your car radio. Or traveling in an airplane. Our Town is available really, in any type of distribution. Andy Ockershausen: One of the things that surprised me, that you've taught me Janny Ockershausen, is the fact that it's so different than radio. We don't have any blank spots. You never lose the signal from Our Town. It's with you all the time. Thanksgiving, while you're working, we have some turkeys we want you to listen to too, so please try to tune us in. When it's over, keep the cards and letters coming. That's more important. The review and that we're hearing from you, is more important than any rating we could get. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: As Ken Beatrice used to say, "This is your show." Andy Ockershausen: We're just here to serve you. It's been such a great experience for us that grew up in radio, at this wonderful radio station that we're working at now, we just think it's been a great Thanksgiving. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: We have a lot to be thankful for. Andy Ockershausen: Don't forget, now when Thanksgiving is over, we start right again to work on Christmas. We'll be here for you, 24/7. That's the great part about our podcast. It's always there. Janice Iacona Ockershausen: Remember, Season 3 starts December 5th. Visit OurTownDC.com. Andy Ockershausen: Even if you don't like our podcast, and don't think what we do is special, have a happy Thanksgiving anyway. Remember the old expression, nobody doesn't like Sara Lee. Well,

Welcome to Episode 83 of Brain Software with Mike Mandel and Chris Thompson! The Hypnotic Hurricane is horrendous in the scope of it’s harshness! Watch out power lines and trailer parks… Check out the show notes below while you’re listening. Keep sending us topic suggestions and show feedback. We love hearing from all of you! Here are the show notes for this episode: Chris does a great introduction, welcoming all of us! But he says “glance” and it sounds like “glans” which is unfortunate. Only 2 weeks to the Architecture of Hypnosis, June training… The May class was awesome, as was Karl Smith’s amazing Kinetic Shift training. We had our first neurosurgeon in the class. We have credibility at last… Mike says “amazing” twice, which is terrible, so he wants to begin speaking in received speech. The story of the Facebook ads. Warning! Grammar violations, but Mike invokes Webster’s Dictionary… A One Star Review! WTF!?!?!? Chris was being the Good Cop, which was very nice! Better to have our friends and fans come to our defence… The orphanage burned down! Hilarious! Mike really amuses himself here! We’re going to the UK to teach, and maybe even Costa Rica…Warning! There are bot flies there! Mike is being interviewed by the awesome hypnosis trainer, Igor Ledochowski, which is great collaboration… Let’s talk about inversion – one should safeguard the testicles. Chris explains psychological inversion, which is a cool technique. (We got it from JamesClear.com) We look at the Target State to tune the RAS, but once you have that in sight, now you can invert things! How would you design a failed marriage? Chris comes up with some great ideas! How to be a lousy Dad? Make sure you do the opposite! How can we make the podcast fail? Apparently by doing everything we’re already doing. The PMI – Plus Minus Inventory is a very powerful tool Do the PMI on both issues; staying and going, whatever it is. This way you’re applying the inversion to the PMI… Mike is considering being an investment banker. This is so ridiculous that it requires no comment, but Chris almost does a Guinea Pig laugh! Don’t let your job become doing PMIs! Mike apparently used this technique on the way to the Christmas party, but he doesn’t  remember… Phonological ambiguity “new direction” or “nude erection”? You decide. Mike is still obsessed with ASMR and Miss ASMR is the best of all…Most beautiful mouth in the universe! Some people find ASMR to be annoying…the rest of us are addicted! Christophe, our psychiatrist from France is also into ASMR. Chris Thompson hates it though. REJECTION! (Cough actually edited out) How do you deal with rejection? Norm Yates and Ken Hunter rejected Mike…(sob) Nobody likes being desocialized! Chris was rejected from a baseball team! Hard to believe that anyone would dump The Golden Boy… Chris is a super-athlete too! And he doesn’t give a You Know What! We’re back to testicles, which Chris reframes as “fortitude” Mike was rejected by an NLP Trainer! Yikes! How can this happen?!? (It wasn’t Hugh Comerford because he’s awesome!) Sometimes there are no answers. Just move on… Oh no! It’s an intervention!!! Mike’s being fired from his own hypnosis academy! The person who cares least is the one who’s in control! Let it frickin’ go! You can’t have a friendship with everyone. Mike attempts to talk about Miss ASMR again, but repents. The Gus Grissom Update: Grissom is back in Toronto, delivering a birthday card…He’s listening to the podcasts…. Our first UK training is coming up in November! It’s a hypnosis Master Class, so come on out! You get MINDSCAPING too…Go to the UK Hypnosis Academy Facebook page for details! Empowering Question: What is the simplest thing I can implement in my life to avoid a host of problems? Metaphor: Toshi Architecture of Hypnosis has a few spots for June 2017. Get in NOW or you’ll have to wait until November …(The June dates are are June 12-16) Ending: Danny Boy plus freestyle chanting!
