Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The cafe in the source field recording is warm and complicated and full of character. The car horns and conversations and everything else that sticks out are somehow woven together. I got to thinking about convolution reverb, a new-ish addition to the workstation I use that allows the acoustics of a space to be reverse engineered. “Horns and Bells, Alexandria” is the introduction and integration of non-real sounds to the cafe using that technique.  "I played short melodies using the software version of the KORG M1 digital synthesizer, abstracted them into shorter snippets to mimic words, beeps, snaps, clangs, and other tones using Ableton's Granulator II, and then passed them all through a very non-standard approximation of a convolution reverb based on a less eventful section of the source recording. It was a challenge and lots of fun - I like the way such discrete sounds can exist together. " Ahwa Downtown Coffeehouse reimagined by Nicolo Scolieri.

Clarissa Connelly - "Holler" from the 2020 self-released album The Voyager. This week's Song of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, in honor of International Women's Month. Re-listen to our kick-off day of programming, and explore articles and live sessions from some of our favorite female artists here.  Combining the technology of her Korg M1 synthesizer with inspiration from ancient lands, Copenhagen-based artist Clarissa Connelly crafts beautiful baroque pop songs, highlighting her diaphanous melodies with lyrics that sow the seeds of Celtic folklore. In fact, the album was released simultaneously with an app named Vandringen that spotlights these foregone Danish locations, not viewable on Google Maps.  "Many of the places are forgotten to some extent, at least when I was there back in 2018," Connelly told The Wire last year. "Since the pandemic, people's interests have turned back to what's around them in a really beautiful way. But I've always been interested in how the landscape was formed, either by humans or by the ice age pushing the soil back and forth creating mountains, or ice holes that become a lake two ice ages later. Imagining that timespan gives me a huge feeling of wanting to create. I'm fascinated by old buildings in cities – like a church, looking at the stones and wondering who built it – but they're only maybe a thousand years old. Looking at these more ancient sites, the burial mounds and Viking fortresses, that's even further back into history. I just get awestruck and want to sing or write about it." Vintage synth lines, euphoric pads and sanguine piano makes for a delight trip back to the old school. The Killing Tapes was formed in 2020 by Marcus Crede (Kreatur and others) and Peter Svensson (Mary Celeste, Hello Heartland). The lyrics and demos were presented to Peter by Marcus in the fall of 2020 and they immediately began to work on the material together. Shortly into the writing process they both realized that the songs were of such quality and importance, they begun the writing and recording of the album Black. Musically The Killing Tapes is a unique mix of Alternative Rock and electronic instruments. They have used original 80s and 90s synths (KORG M1, M3, Wavestation, MS20, Yamaha PSR). It is not a retro album but the sounds of the gear and the way it is played gives a certain feeling of melancholy they both love. Thanks to your growing support we have the Privilege for this episode to receive MR Stephan Bodzin with a powerful techno set. Play it, enjoy it and spread it! Born in the northern German countryside in 1969, Stephan Bodzin started dabbling in music at an early age due to his father, also an artist and musician, whose studio contained all the magic sound-machines like the ARP2600, Memorymoog, Polysix and many others (today’s producers only know them as software-plug-ins). No wonder Stephan was heavily fascinated by the idea of electronic music as a little kid and soon founded his own projects as a piano and bass player. After finding out, that none of his band members (including himself) were able to play as tight as the legendary Korg M1 sequencer, Stephan came to the point where he preferred to substitute all “real” musicians with “virtual” musicians in his studio. At the tender age of 17 he bought his first Atari computer and the story began… After moving to the big city of Bremen, where Stephan steadily kept on to improving & built up his studio set-up, he got in touch with the experimental theatre scene and began to finding own platform to express his artistic and musical visions in compositions for several plays (including works for the established Goethe Theatre in Bremen and the infamous Ikarus Dancing-Theatre from Austria). But Bodzin never lost his love for pure analogue & electronic music. He put together his first club tracks, which directly got “road-tested” by his brother Oliver, who was a house DJ back then. Around that time he got to know “Humate” member Oliver Huntemann and a long term friendship and work relationship took off. In the following 10 years, they produced various projects like Marc Romboy, Thomas Schumacher, Elektrochemie, H-Man or Oliver Huntemann and did countless remixes for artists like Binary Finary, Frankie Goes To Hollywood or Sinead O’Connor. Furthermore Stephan created the two internationally successful solo projects Condor and Boca. In December 2004, his friend and global techno player Thomas Schumacher asked him to produce Electrochemie, Schumacher’s project with his girlfriend Caitlin Devlin, and his own “Schumacher” tracks. The outcome of those collabos, released on the labels Get Phyical and Spiel-Zeug Schallplatten, struck the worldwide club-scene like a bomb, nonetheless because of Stephan’s special skills, which can also be heard in the two albums of both projects, which will be released in 2006. In 2005 Mr. Bodzin, started concentrating on his own career. The Solo-Single “Caligula / Marathon Man”, which came out on Systematic in December 2005 was his first step into the spotlight and created global interest in the artist Stephan Bodzin. Another big thing was his production work with Mr. Systematic Marc Romboy, which resulted in their Luna EP on Systematic and the tracks “House Ya” and “Jigsaw”, for Romboy’s debut LP “Gemini”. The List of labels, which released Bodzin productions in 2005 & 2006 reads like the “who's who” in the innovative club music scene: Get Physical, Datapunk, International Deejay Gigolo, Systematic, Giant Wheel, Spiel-Zeug Schallplatten, Confused, Dance Electric and Great Stuff. At the moment Stephan Bodzin is busy starting up his own label with the helping hand of label-god Jan Langer and he’s preparing a second career as a DJ and Live Act! There is no stopping and the journey has just begun!.. and keep on watching the small printed credits on the records, it could be Stephan Bodzin! ---- Basic Statements by underground lovers for undergorund lovers.
