Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers from my book Electronic and Experimental music. Send us a Text Message. When Lee Finkelstein lays down a beat, it's not just rhythm—he's telling a story, painting a landscape. It's a philosophy I, John Simeone, share wholeheartedly. Our recent conversation took us on a tour through the world of drumming, where we unpacked the essence of what it means to truly play for the music. Lee, with his wealth of experience across genres, emphasizes the idea that serving the song trumps personal showmanship. We riff on the camaraderie between drummers, the joy found in simplicity, and the magnetic pull of a groove that unites a band. The heartbeat of our episode pulses with discussions on live performance and the wisdom Lee shares gleaned from playing with legends like the Blues Brothers band and stepping in for David Garibaldi with Tower of Power. As we explore the shifting tides of the music industry, we offer nuggets of advice for up-and-coming drummers striving to stay relevant. Join us as we share stories of triumph, the humbling moments of our careers, and the lessons that resonate beyond the stage. It's a rhythmic ride that speaks to the core of every musician's spirit.Lee has recorded, performed with and backed up Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr, Eric Gale, The Oregon Symphony Orchestra & Randy Brecker, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, Bette Midler, Blood Sweat & Tears, Russ Freeman, Julio Iglesias, Frankie Paul, Johnny Winter, Steve Cropper, Lou Marini, Will Lee, Paul Shafer, John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, Alan Rubin, Saturday Night Live, Dave Valentine, Cornelius Bumpus, Anthony Jackson, Mary Wilson, Daryl Hall, John Oates, Hudson River Rats, Joey Ramone, Vaneese Thomas, Mario Cruz, Jens Wendelboe, Don Blackman, Oz Noy, Buzz Feiten, Neil Jason, Deena Miller, Dave Fields, Jay Prince, Bill Heller, Cosmic Oven, Derretub Snub, Hadrian Decree, Red Flannel Hash Band, Small Talk/Jim Small Band, The Paper Bag, Timberwolf, Yasgur's Farm, Jim Pin Band 5+2-1, Eclipse, Funk Filharmonik, The Zen Tricksters, Major Domo, Chick Singer Night NYC, Jonny Rosch, Bobby Harden, Stevie Cochran, Ed Palermo Big Band, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Wycliff Gordon, Marc Ribler, Jack Daley, JT Bowen, Southside Johhny, Bowling For Leftovers, Dead On Live, Felix Cavaliere and The Rascals, Felicia Collins, David Spinozza, Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Bill Murray, Chris Noth, Ben Vereen, Friends of the Brothers, the Royal Scam and Paul Sorvino. Tonight we present a very special concert that took place in Vancouver at the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Theatre and was presented by the old Vancouver New Jazz Society. It took place on a Sunday night on December 6, 1959. The star was the great Modern Jazz pianist Russ Freeman. Mr. Freeman was one of the leading and busiest pianists on the West Coast as he had played with Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Art Pepper ,Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss and many other greats. He was a hard swinging and inventive pianist who had his own style. Russ and Hampton Hawes were the two leading lights of Jazz piano on the Coast. He was very happy with his two accompanists and inspired by their talents. They were Vancouver legends Stan "Cuddles" Johnson on bass and swinging drummer Jimmy Wightman. Russ didn't do many trio albums under his name and this disc issued by Montreal's Just a Memory label adds greatly to his legacy. Sadly these fine musicians are all gone but their music lives tonight as The Jazz Show's Jazz Feature.
Tonight's show is the 600th episode of Jazz After Dark! We'll hear selections from 1934 – 1969: Benny Carter, Sidney Bechet with Noble Sissle, Lena Horne, Stan Kenton and His Orchestra, Helen Carr, Gerry Mulligan, and Harold Land. Also: Ella Fitzgerald live from Copenhagen in 1959, in a newly released recording, and then Russ Freeman, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Count Basie & His Orchestra, Paul Desmond, and Ben Webster.

Léo Gandelman, Djavan, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Cazuza, Caetano Veloso o Marina Lima. Time travel, one of mankind's fervent desires. We do it here: we travel back in time to remember great Smooth Jazz hits that are already iconic. Tracks that remain in our memory but that we didn't remember. We refresh you musically. Headphones, sofa and 60 minutes of your time... that's all we ask of you. We go from the impressive Hardcastle - yes, the one from that 19th that we still remember - to the late Nick Colionne who left us in January this year. Let's go to the Minucci of the best times and let's go to impressive songs by the Acoustic Alchemy, a band that was born and grew up in the shadow of the acoustic guitars of Simon James and Nick Webb. The Rippingtones - the American Smooth jazz and Crossover jazz band, formed in 1986 by guitarist Russ Freeman -, Bob Baldwin - creator and king of Urban Jazz - or the great Torcuato Mariano, the master born in Argentina, and settled in the land of Pelé, who now also has a voice in The Voice Brazil, could not be missing from all this. Chet Baker is certainly not a stranger to even casual jazz fans. Many listeners know of his groundbreaking recordings with Gerry Mulligan, Russ Freeman, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond as well as many others. There's even been a movie made about Chet Baker (Born to Be Blue, starring Ethan Hawke). But one particular group that hardly ever gets mentioned is the Chet Baker Trio. Baker's Trio configurations recorded for a 10-year span, and they yield highly lyrical, beautiful, tasteful & emotional music! So, we are giving the Trio their due on this episode of the Dr. Jazz Podcast. Enjoy!
The cover story on guitarist Julian Lage in the July issue of DownBeat reminded us of a duo with Julian Lage and saxophonist Ben Roseth playing at Egan's in Ballard in 2008. Both were in their early 20s at the time, but were already making waves. We recorded the duo and share some music from that night on this week's episode. Also on this week's show, trumpeter Jay Thomas, saxophonist Harold Land's Quartet with Russ Freeman on piano at The Penthouse in Seattle in 1964, Vancouver singer Dee Daniels, a bi-coastal project with trumpeters Ray Vega and Thomas Marriott, Portland singer Rebecca Kilgore and others. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple, or Google.

That’s why we’re rebooting that tradition for the digital age with our “Crate Digging” video series, in which we’ll search through crates of our memories to bring you a handful of album recommendations on a given theme. It’s social media in the truest sense of the term: no algorithms, no computer-generated playlist. Just jazz fans sharing records with other jazz fans. For this episode of Crate Digging, we have chosen some of our favorite albums testifying to the link between jazz and sports! Ralph Sutton Quartet, Jazz at the Olympics (Omega, 1961) Bob James, Touchdown (Tappan Zee, 1978) Oscar Feldman, Gol (ZOHO, 2017) André Previn & Russ Freeman, Double Play! Album Artwork by Bill Mayer The music on the new album has been described as “Genre-busting” “sonic detailing” “creative evolution” and (you must) “listen with headphones”"...the motive, the motif, for Open Road (album)It's the passing of time and how you choose to use the time that you have. You have one choice. You have one life, you have to weave through all your choices, and your destiny is informed by those choices. That's what this album is for me – the passage of time and your free will as to how you use it.” - Russ Freeman of The Rippingtons The Rippington's are currently on tour! It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road." This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!

Joined by original Rippington, alto and soprano saxophonist Brandon Fields, drummer Dave Karasony, bassist and rhodes player Rico Belled and special guest Jeffrey Osborne, Freeman orchestrates ten compelling originals. The album opens with the hypnotic and scintillating “Wild Tales,” the CD's first single, which Freeman calls an “experiment in randomness.” Fusing elements of jazz with traces of EDM and world influences, The Rippingtons foreshadow the journey ahead and promise it to be nothing short of exhilarating. Many of the classic Rippingtons hit repertoire prominently feature rich saxophone melodies and this time out Freeman showcases his unparalleled guitar wizardry.

As the twenty first century unfolded, Gwen co-founded a small record label that included an album she personally placed in over 400 stores and through her efforts that album made it to the Grammy ballot in four categories. Like for many others, life took a turn for the worst in the late 2000’s and Gwen lost everything she’d worked so hard to gain… Everything that is except her determination and ability to find the positive in even the most negative experiences of her life. These experiences resulted in her desire to help others end their suffering and live a joy filled life. Today… she’s mastered one of the most profound technologies in neuro-linguistics, combined with structural healing modalities, she’s one of few healers who literally touch the body and mind simultaneously. Through her workshops and message of “Forgiveness to Joy” her clients gain a new way to have more energy, better health, happier relationships and become more attractive to the abundance they desire. Of all the bands that tenor saxophone giant Stan Getz put together, this one is the least documented. It was formed in 1953 and worked on the East Coast but Stan bought a house in Los Angeles and took the band out there to play gigs in that area. They made three recording sessions for Norman Granz in July and August 1953 and we'll hear some of the results of those. They were first issued on Granz' Clef and Norgran labels as "Interpretations #1 #2 #3 by the Stan Getz Quinttet".The group consisted of Getz, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Johnny Williams, piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and the underrated drummer Frank Isola. Getz and Brookmeyer had a unique musical chemistry that allowed them to weave lines together and improvise collectively almost like a modern Dixieland band, Pianist Johnny Williams' contributions to this band are enormous as he plays with the stabbing intensity of Horace Silver and Russ Freeman but sounds like only himself. Bassist Teddy Kotick was Charlie Parker's favourite and Bird called Teddy..."my heartbeat". Frank Isola was a subtle and swinging drummer who kept everything light and very swinging.Jimmy Giuffre said that this quintet was Stan Getz' best band and you'll hear why. It broke up in the late Fall of 1953 because of a lack of work but Getz re-united it for his legendary Shrine Auditorium concert in November 1954.
