Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers from my book Electronic and Experimental music.   Playlist: DIGITAL SYNTHESIZERS AND SAMPLERS   Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:38 00:00 1.     Jon Appleton, “Syntrophia”(1978) from Music For Synclavier And Other Digital Systems. Today have the third and penultimate conversation from our Label Focus mini-series presented by Zara Hedderman. So far we've heard from Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records and Joey Edwards from Pizza Pizza Records and in this episode, you'll hear Zara speaking with Michael Roe, label and artist manager with Faction Records. Faction Records is coming close to reaching a massive milestone of 20 years in business after it was founded by Ken Allen in 2006. You may remember a compilation CD from around that time called Faction One and featured bands like Director, The Immediate, Republic of Loose and Future Kings of Spain amongst others. Today, populating Faction's roster of artists are a number of firm favourites with critics and audiences such as Sorcha Richardson, Niamh Regan, Martin Hayes, and Jape. Over the course of the chat Michael delved into the many ways that the industry is changing and how he and his colleagues at Faction work with their artists to develop their careers and prepare them to build their audience base and engage with international markets. In this regard, the conversation explores different elements of the business-side of the artist-label relationship and how important it is to have a plan but also not fear failure along the way. Zara and Michael discuss the impact of artists self-releasing their music and how that's changing the overall landscape and the importance of the relationships artists build with various media outlets and journalists. We'll have another episode, the final one in this series, very soon, but until then, here's Michael Roe of Faction Records.Keep up to date on Faction Records here:https://www.instagram.com/factionmusicieMusic featured:Annamoe Drive - Procrastinationhttps://anamoedrive.bandcamp.com/track/procrastinationNiamh Regan - Madonnahttps://niamhregan.bandcamp.com/track/madonnaSéan Joyce - My Facehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrE9V3Ccs7I

On today's episode we're bringing you the second installment of a mini-series of conversations from Zara Hedderman that explore the various practicalities, challenges and, of course, the joys of running a record label in Ireland. In the first episode, we heard from Leitrim-based Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records, who shared great insights into the label's catalog and more, since that episode has come out there's been announcements of exciting forthcoming releases to come from Nyahh so do keep an ear out for them!Today, we make the journey (in our imaginations, at least)  from Leitrim to County Louth, parking up in Dundalk where we'll hear from Joey Edwards - co-founder of Pizza Pizza Records, sound engineer extraordinaire and musician in his own right. Founded in 2018, Pizza Pizza Records, is an independent artist-led label, and it struck gold with its inaugural release Wednesday, the critically acclaimed and Choice Prize nominated debut from Just Mustard. That album not only announced Just Mustard as an act that audiences outside of Ireland were getting excited about, but it immediately asserted Pizza Pizza Record's reputation of a label working with the best in Ireland's independent acts up and down the country and certainly one worthy of being bookmarked to keep up with the buzzing  independent scene. Today, the label's roster has expanded to include Clara Tracey, Elaine Malone, Trick Mist, The Altered Hours, and Larry and Elephant. In this episode, Zara and Joey talk about Wednesday's impact on Pizza Pizza Records and the initial period of operating as a label, how they maintained momentum and how things progressed from that first offering. Notably, Just Mustard have since signed to Partisan Records – with Fontaines DC and Aoife Nessa Frances as labelmates – and Joey, who co-manages the band, reflects on the ways that working with Partisan has inspired different ways to keep Pizza Pizza going sustainably while keeping audiences engaged. In this regard, community and connection – aside from providing a platform for excellent independent Irish artists - were two things Joey kept circling back on when discussing the label's evolution and the general DIY climate both locally and abroad. We touched on the role of physical media given Pizza Pizza's viny-forward MO and its importance within the foundation of DIY communities whether it's finding like-minded people in local record shops or in the queue at the merch table after a gig. You never know where a conversation will take you! Thanks so much for joining us again, and for all your wonderful feedback on the Nyahh Records conversation, it's greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning about Pizza Pizza Records in this episode and maybe afterwards are inspired to set up your own independent label. We'll be back soon, but until then, here's Joey Edwards of Pizza Pizza Records.Featured songs:Larry - Liarhttps://larrymusic.bandcamp.com/album/larryJust Mustard - Deafhttps://justmustard.bandcamp.com/album/wednesdayElaine Malone - My Baby's Dead (Redux)https://elainemalone.bandcamp.com/album/pyrrhic0:00 - Zara Hedderman intro link3:20 - Pizza Pizza Origin and Joey's background in music11:00 - Label Model or inspiration13:00 - First release, Just Mustard's debut album Wednesday19:30 Co-managing Just Mustard, learning from other industry experts25:30 - Changes since Pizza Pizza began in 201827:10 - Vinyl focus for the label33:20 - Creating a sense of community via records35:30 - Discussion on streaming and valuing music38:10 - Elaine Malone43:45 - Advice for other people considering starting a record label

In the first of a series of interviews focused on Irish record labels, today Zara Hedderman brings us an in-depth chat with Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records.Based in County Leitrim, Willie Stewart started Nyahh Records in 2021 and it's described as a “home for sound collectors, noise makers and music builders”. A musician and member of Woven Skull, a filmmaker and no stranger to working within the realm of record labels having operated the Hypnagogic Tapes label, Stewart has been connected to and steeped in Ireland's underground scene for several years and has become an leading figure in illuminating and spreading the tremendous music being made by artists working within this immersive world via Nyahh.Wille spoke to Zara about what led to the label's inception and explored some of the fascinating releases that have come out such as Ian Lynch's debut solo album as One Leg One Eye, which is a truly captivating body of work that completely transports you right from the moment you step into it. And that transportative quality is omnipresent across the various releases and is something that connects them. Whether it's the compilations covering Sean Nos singing or experimental music in Ireland between the ‘60s and ‘90s taking audiences to different eras or the wonderful collaborations between Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy inviting you to wander through vast and intricately detailed sonic settings, Nyahh's releases are not only enjoyable to listen to, but they feel essential in what they open the audience to.In this episode, we hear about the continued interest in Ireland's underground artists - past, present and future, and consider the elements that have ignited a curiosity amongst audiences. Willie speaks about the passion and process involved in creating the brilliant compilations that the label have put out and  the debut album from Mohammad Syfkhan called I Am Kurdish, which has been critically acclaimed both in Ireland and in international music press and a lot more in between. Songs featured in this episode:1. Mohammed Syfkhan - I Am Kurdish2. One Leg One Eye - Bold And Undaunted Youth3. Michael Frank Ó Confhaola - Róisín Dubh4. Willie Stewart runs Nyahh Records from his home in Co Leitrim. After releasing the brilliant I Am Kurdish by Mohammad Syfkhan in February, Willie talks about how that album came together and talks about Mohammad's story and musical output. Then he talks through other releases on the label, like Natalia Beylis' collaboration with Eimear Reidy, Ian Lynch's solo debut, and the two compilations from 2023: A Collection of Songs in the Traditional & Sean-Nós Style and Under the Island: Experimental Music in Ireland 1960-1994. He began playing music in 1980 while he was in college studying nursing. When he got his degree in 1983, Mohammad moved to the city of Raqqa, Syria where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts, parties, weddings and festivals all over Syria. The Al-Rabie Band were a much sought-after group. Their live sets included Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and some Western songs as well as Mohammad's own original material. Mohammad continued to play with his band while also working as a surgical nurse until the war broke out in 2011. This unfortunately brought tragedy to Mohammad's family when one of his sons was killed by Isis thus threatening the lives of the rest of his family. His family had no choice but to leave their home and seek safety in Europe. Three of Mohammad's sons were resettled in Germany while Mohammad, his young daughter and wife were taken in by Ireland. Mohammad has spoken at length of his confusion and despair with fundamentalists and how their message is a far cry from the teachings of love and understanding that he considers the true message of Islam. Since arriving in Ireland, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He regularly plays at weddings and events for the Kurdish and Syrian communities all over Ireland and in Germany. He has collaborated with such Irish artists as Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley, Eimear Reidy, Cathal Roche and Vincent Woods. In 2023 he opened for Lankum at the Cork Opera House and received huge applause from the packed out room. Mohammad's own brand of ecstatic music takes elements from Middle Eastern and North African music to create an atmosphere of joy, love and happiness. The songs on ‘I am Kurdish' have been recorded and mixed with the view to make them to suitable for listening to at a small get together or to be played on a big rig at night clubs. Either way, it is a record that will make people dance. Three of the tracks on the album feature accompaniment by two fellow Leitrim-based musicians: composer, improviser, sound artist and saxophonist Cathal Roche and composer, improviser and cellist Eimear Reidy. Mohammad says: “I thank everyone who has stood with me and supported me. And I especially thank the Irish people who have engaged with my music in such a wonderful way. I consider myself lucky to have come to this wonderful country that has welcomed me and all refugees. I thank God for everything, and now, thanks to this wonderful country, I am a musician and have a safe home. Thank you to the Irish government and people for giving me the honour of calling this country my home.”

This works for new and experienced athletes. Newer athletes may find this a bit demanding, but it will help you get faster, faster. Testing regularly is particularly helpful for athletes who have some experience and find themselves plateauing in their performance.   Here's how the cycle works. Take bike power for example. You want to take a baseline FTP test to determine your  Functional Threshold Power. FTP is theoretically the power in Watts you can average for 45-60 minutes. This FTP becomes an anchor point for determining your training zones. Having accurately determined training zones is important for making sure you do prescribed training in the right zones.   For example, if you want to increase your threshold power you need to train at that Z4 Threshold zone to train your body to process muscle lactate efficiently. The more time you spend in that zone, the more adaptation you get. Without the FTP number or accurate substitute, you may be training in the wrong zone (eg Z3 or Z5), neither of which create the same adaptation of teaching your body to improve lactate processing and increasing your capacity to do work. Training regularly and progressively overloading the correct training zones over the course of 3 weeks on the 4th week you retest. If things are working, the next FTP test is at a higher average power than the one 4 weeks earlier. You then adjust the training zones. In this case increasing the power ranges for each zone. Another 3 weeks of training at the new (accurate) zones causes another adaptation, another test, another increase, another adjustment to training zones, etc.   Swim: Perform a 400 time trial effort from a push (not dive). Recover for 10 to 15 minutes with easy swimming and rest. Perform a 200 time trial effort from a push. Looking to calculate CSS or CV as Meters or Yards Per Minute. The higher the number the faster your are. If you go real fast on the 200 and real slow on the 400 - that counts against you. Your 200 should be about 6% faster than the 400.   Bike Power on a trainer is best 20 or 45 minute Or 15 miles without power   Run: 5k Time Trial as if racing Do on a track or flat course Always repeat on the same track or course if possible   How to execute a perfectly paced test. Consider how big of an improvement over the last two tests in that discipline. Consider how well the athlete is training at Z4 and Z5. Start with the average pace or power from the previous test and set a reasonable increase as the target pace or power. Execute at that power or pace start to finish. Don't start faster.   Excerpt from Swim Test Pacing: For the 200 target 58 seconds per lap which will put you close to 1:56/100 pace or 3:51 200. For the 400 target 59 seconds per lap for the first 4 and 60 seconds per lap for the last 4. If you feel you have some gas increase the stroke rate on the last lap.   If you want to talk further about how to test regularly to get better results, reach out at Rich@303colorado.com or message @tripodcasterrich   Check out the TriDot Free Trial https://app.tridot.com/onboard/sign-up/richsoares   Endurance News:   Ironman World Championships St. George results Utah Sports Commission Expected To Create Total Economic Impact Of More Than $35m Dollars   PTO Pro Am, to be held this Sunday 15 May at the Herbalife24 Triathlon Los Angeles and streamed live for free around the world The event will see six of the world's top professional athletes race an Olympic-distance course alongside Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) athletes and special guests including former UFC star Paul Felder and Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell. Well I Know Now with Pippa Kelly

My mum adored Nobby Stiles. She didn’t watch much football, but she loved the cheeky chappy with his famous gap-toothed grin who, having played every minute of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup, celebrated his team’s 4-2 win over Germany by dancing a jig on the Wembley pitch with the trophy in one hand and his false teeth in the other. His son John, my guest in this episode, says that when his dad was living with dementia he used to drive from Doncaster to visit him with knots in his stomach. “I felt sick. It was a living nightmare to see such a lovely man disappear in such a brutal way.” Many of us know exactly what he means.Norbert Peter Stiles was born in Collyhurst a working class suburb of Manchester. The son of an undertaker and a machinist, he followed Manchester United, played for England Schoolboys at the age of 15 and, in 1959, fulfilled his childhood dream and joined his beloved team as an apprentice. He debuted for his country against Scotland at Wembley in April 1965 – his aggressive ball-winning technique didn’t please everyone. “I got slaughtered in the papers, absolutely slaughtered,” Nobby said, but he never let the criticism put him off. Nor did the England manager, Alf Ramsey, who threatened to resign when the sports governing body demanded that he drop Stiles for the 1966 World Cup quarter-final following a robust challenge in the final group game against France. Ramsey would later say that he had five world-class players and Nobby, a great reader of the game, was one of them. A national star then, but also a hero in his home city of Manchester. Stiles made almost 400 appearances for the Red Devils, helping them win two league titles as well as the European Cup in 1968.But in 2002 Nobby suffered a heart attack and a year later, aged 61, he began to show signs of what was later to be diagnosed as a mixture of vascular and Alzheimer’s dementia. As his health worsened so too did his finances and he was forced to sell his World Cup winner’s medal and other memorabilia.Following Nobby’s death the Stiles’ family are speaking publicly about dementia’s terrible toll on not just an individual but a family – and about the unfairness of a system that sees those with other diseases being given free NHS care while those with dementia have to pay. Having long suspected that Nobby’s dementia was caused by the innumerable headings he made during his career, the family made the brave decision to donate his brain to research into the links between the disease and the sport. In an emotional Zoom call a few weeks ago, neuropathologist Dr Willie Stewart, confirmed their fear. The Stiles family may have been vindicated, but they are angry. Because way back in 2002 West Bromwich striker Jeff Astle was named as the first British footballer known to have died from repeatedly heading the ball – and yet until recently no research has been done into the link. “That’s almost 20 years of players – men and women – at risk with no restrictions. Unprotected. Uninformed”, says Nobby’s son John, himself a former professional footballer. “There is a cancer in football of denial and defence. These players need help and they need it now. And there’s been virtually no help. That’s a disgrace”. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The word ‘concussion’ might sound like a benign knock to the head but it can have lasting consequences. Women are particularly at risk. With all else being equal, women are two to three times more likely to experience a concussion, will have worse symptoms and take longer to recover. Dr Willie Stewart from Glasgow University has been trying to find out why – but has been hampered by the lack of female brains available to study. He’s now asking women to consider donating their brains in the name of science and understanding how sex differences affect the outcome and treatment of traumatic brain injury. Jane is also joined by Samantha Ainsworth, who talks about her experience of post-concussion syndrome. Back in October we spoke to the anti-abortion group who put up graphic posters of aborted foetuses in the constituency of the MP Stella Creasy. At the time she was heavily pregnant. The same group, called CBR UK, is now planning regular anti-abortion demonstrations at Cardiff University. They've had three of them already, just before Christmas. We speak to the student who encouraged an automatic pro-choice stance at Cardiff University, and a recent graduate who's part of a group which helps students who are against abortion to express their views. Also, Dr Pam Lowe from Aston University who has been researching attitudes to abortion at UK universities. Women are the main readers of fiction. They outnumber men in all categories of fiction bar fantasy, horror and science fiction. In her new book Why Women Read Fiction, Professor Helen Taylor draws on over 500 interviews with women readers to examine how and why women consume fiction and why reading fiction is so important to huge numbers of women. The government’s official advisers on youth justice are calling for a full review of the age of criminal responsibility. They would like it raised by at least two years to 12, as Scotland has done recently. So why do England and Wales continue to set theirs at ten despite it being the lowest in Europe? Should children as young as ten caught committing a crime receive welfare interventions rather than being dealt with by the justice system? Jane is joined by Dr Eileen Vizard, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Institute of Child Health in UCL and Louise King, Director of Policy and Campaigns, from the legal charity, Just for Kids Law. Bunny Rugs was an early member of Inner Circle, worked as an earlier duo member with “Bunny & Ricky” and recorded "Freedom Fighter" and "Bushweed Corntrash," but he is best known as the front man for Third World. Bunny had a magnificent voice that he maintained throughout his career. His voice was strong, powerful, and commanding. It’s hard to separate Bunny Rugs from Third World as the image is strong and cohesive. When William Clark – Bunny Rugs passed away, we played two hours of his music in tribute. Our selections included two solo albums “Talking To You” on Shanachie and “Time” which was release in 2012. More treasures are contained in the Third World recordings. Dozens and dozens of releases to choose from and we built a “top ten” on the spot which was based on listener calls and requests. Bunny Rugs joined Third World after Milton Hamilton left in 1976. In the following decades the core group of Third World consisted of Bunny Rugs, Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett, Michael “Ibo” Cooper, Stephen “Cat” Coore, Richie Daley, and Willie Stewart. Third World recorded for the Island/Mango label and allowed for high quality recordings to accompany the skilled instrumentalists that are Third World. Most members of Third World are unique in their formal musical training. As part of their performances, Cat Coore would bring out his cello and play a reggae laced song with that rich classical feel that the cello provides. Third World stood out in what might be called a “golden era” of reggae bands of the 70s-80’s in Jamaica. Third World’s style is what set them apart – they were crossing over into American Soul with songs like “Now That We Found Love” and Try Jah Love.” Listening back now, the music is deep and soulful with a smooth groove, very different from today’s sound. Third World’s legacy is strong in lyrical content. Rastafari, culture and social issues were always a focus. A focus which was not altered. Tracks like “Cold Sweat,” “Jah Glory,” “African Woman,” and “Shine Like A Blazing Fire” convey this reliable, rootsical message. The uptown Third World bridged the message from the heart of Jamaica and worked alongside the greats in reggae music history as partners. Bunny Rugs was a great singer, as a group Third World is great in the studio and on vinyl and when performing live, they are a joy.
