Episode 174 Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 33, Digital Synthesizers and Samplers from my book Electronic and Experimental music.   Playlist: DIGITAL SYNTHESIZERS AND SAMPLERS   Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:38 00:00 1.     Jon Appleton, “Syntrophia”(1978) from Music For Synclavier And Other Digital Systems. On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Whitney Johnson! Whitney did something I've always dreamed about - releasing two different albums (under two separate names no less!) on the same day, and both of them are fabulous. We talk about that and some other sound projects before diving into all the sides of Sonny Sharrock, Prince's all-time greatness, unrepentant love for ABBA, Psychic TV destroying us, the Steve Winwood hypetrain, and FINALLY someone's favorite song is also my favorite song, so we had a moment at the end. Plus more, obviously!Listen to all of Whitney's picks HERE“Hav”“Stena”Whitney on InstagramSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. This week on the show, we're joined by Sam Shepherd, AKA Floating Points. His discography is full of beautiful and strange electronic music—bubbling Buchalas, skittering beats, washes of synthesized sound, and even moody, spacious post-rock. But underneath it all, his love of jazz is clear. In 2021, he teamed with an actual jazz legend: the late Pharoah Sanders, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra for Promises, a single 46-minute composition broken into nine movements.  Though the artists were separated by decades in age, their approach is simpatico. Just as Shepherd has moved between genres and styles, so did Pharoah. His early work with John and Alice Coltrane established him as a dynamic, sometimes frighteningly intense sideman, and his first run of records, including 1969's Karma, featuring “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” helped set the stage for what we now call “spiritual jazz.”  But Sanders, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, cared very little about what genre you filed his records under. “I just play whatever I feel like playing,” he told The New Yorker. Sanders stayed restless and creative—listen to his playing on Sonny Sharrock's masterful Ask the Ages or his works with Bill Laswell, and you'll hear what we mean. In 1977, he waded into deeply personal waters with the self-titled Pharoah, which will be reissued by Luaka Bop on September 15th. Exploring new age adjacent sounds, funk, and passionate ballads, it's a radical departure from his early work, but perfectly in keeping with Sanders' unpredictable ethos.  Likewise, Promises is hardly the “back to basics” late career album you might expect an 80-year-old artist to make. It's its own thing, a meditative sojourn that relies on silence as much as sound. And next week, on September 20th, Floating Points will be joined by past Transmissions guest Shabaka Hutchings, as well as Caribou, Four Tet, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and others for the first-ever staging of Promises live at the Hollywood Bowl. Ahead of that show, Shepherd joined us from his studio to discuss his his years collecting records, making Promises—and we even got him to reveal Pharoah's favorite place to eat in LA.  Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts, like Drifter's Sympathy, with Emil Amos of Grails, Om, Holy Sons, who will be our guest next week on Transmissions. And of course No Way Out: An Oral History of Sunburned Hand of the Man, curated and produced by J Kelly Davis and presented by Aquarium Drunkard and Talkhouse. Back soon. Next week on the show, Jarvis Taveniere of Woods.

We all know about fusion - the (sometime unholy) union of jazz and rock that tried to find a new audience for instrumentalists in the 1970s.  But there have always been, well, odder experiments with electricity in jazz, more like intrusions of the rock world than integrations, and we look at four rather varied examples in this here podcast.  Running the gamut from harmolodic blues-slinger to fusion axe-hero to . . . Herbie Mann? - these artists let the guitar off da hook and, possibly, into your hearts.  Herbie Mann - MEMPHIS UNDERGROUND ; James Blood Ulmer – BLACK ROCK;  Alan Holdsworth – NONE TOO SOON; Jay Hoggard - RIVERSIDE DANCE.

This Monday night on Jazz Alternatives, Mitch Goldman welcomes drummer Don McKenzie back to the studio for a very special Deep Focus on the supergroup Last Exit (Peter Brotzmann, Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell, Ronald Shannon Jackson), a rebroadcast from 2015. The band was known for its uncompromising musical ferocity, fueled by the band members' confrontational attitudes. Greg Kot wrote that they brought a level of "volume and violence that makes most rock bands sound tame."  Although Last Exit left a mere handful of recordings and made only limited tour dates, they left a reputation for scorched earth; dazzled, sputtering listeners and no apologies.  A quarter century later, however, when the swagger of the music's creators has been set aside, what emerges is magnificent improvisation (they never rehearsed) with glistening shards of beauty from each of the composer/bandleader members.  This will be especially well borne out by the unreleased live recordings to be presented on Monday night, music the world has almost never heard.   Drummer Don McKenzie, well-known for his playing with Elliot Sharp, Marc Ribot, Vernon Reid and Roswell Rudd among many, many others, brings special insight into this ensemble, so often discussed but so seldom brought to light.   WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR HD1 and wkcr.org.   Catch it on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com.   #WKCR #JazzAlternatives #LastExit #DonMcKenzie #DeepFocus #MitchGoldman #PeterBrotzmann #SonnySharrock #BillLaswell #RonaldShannonJackson #JazzRockFusion #NoWave   Photo credit: no publishing information available.

Burning Ambulance Podcast

I have said two things all season long. The first is that we're going to be exploring a single topic for ten episodes, and that topic is fusion. But the second thing I've been saying is that what I'm talking about when I say the word fusion isn't a style or a genre, but a state of mind. It's not what you play, it's how you approach music-making.In previous episodes, we've talked about what people typically think of as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that more or less starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and branches out to include Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report. But my version of that continuum also includes early Seventies Santana, it includes the Fania All Stars collaborating with Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham, it includes adventurous funk and R&B fusion, like P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players and Slave, and it includes jazz-funk acts like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and George Duke.Vernon Reid is a guitarist who was born in England but grew up in New York. He's best known as the leader of Living Colour, and one of the co-founders of the Black Rock Coalition along with the late writer Greg Tate, but he's got a long and varied discography that encompasses solo material, duo and trio work with other guitarists like Bill Frisell, David Torn and Elliot Sharp, and guest appearances with a ton of groups from Public Enemy to the Rollins Band, Mick Jagger, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Santana, and many, many more. His solo album Mistaken Identity from 1996 is the only album to carry co-producer credits from Prince Paul and Teo Macero. Back in 2012, he made an album with a group called Spectrum Road which featured John Medeski on keyboards, Jack Bruce on bass, and Cindy Blackman Santana on drums — it was conceptually a tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime, but it's very much its own thing as well, so definitely check that out.Reid got his start, though, with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's band the Decoding Society. He played guitar, banjo, and guitar synth with that group, which had two bassists: Melvin Gibbs, who was on this podcast a couple of years ago, and Reverend Bruce Johnson, and then some horn players, mostly Zane Massey on saxophones and Henry Scott on trumpet. It's high-energy music that's also really melodic in a kind of post-Prime Time way — jazz, funk, rock, Texas blues and West African music all swirled together and thrown straight at your face at a hundred miles an hour. Their albums Nasty, Street Priest, Mandance, Barbeque Dog, Montreux Jazz Festival and Earned Dreams are all incredible. They're all out of print right now, too, but some of them are on streaming services, so dig up whatever you can. Reid has a new record out with the group Free Form Funky Freqs, a trio with bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who's also been on this podcast before, and drummer Calvin Weston, and as he explains in this conversation, it's full-on improv, starting from zero every time they play together, and because it's so limited – no rehearsals, no soundchecks with all three members – they know exactly how many times they've played together. The album represents their 73rd encounter. It's called Hymn Of The 3rd Galaxy, sort of a tribute to Return To Forever there, who had an album called Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, and you'll hear a little bit of the music late in the podcast. I think you'll really enjoy this episode. I've been a fan of Vernon Reid's music for about 35 years. The first Living Colour album came out when I was in high school, and I saw them play on the first Lollapalooza festival in the summer of 1991. And I interviewed him once before, about 10 years ago, when he was doing a multimedia presentation called Artificial Africa. So in this conversation, we talk about his work with the Decoding Society, about the Free Form Funky Freqs, about the whole wave of guitarists who came up at the same time he did, including Michael Gregory Jackson and Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly and Brandon Ross, as well as older players like James "Blood" Ulmer and Pete Cosey and Sonny Sharrock… we talk about a lot of things, and I'm just gonna end this introduction here, so you can dive in.MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE:Living Colour, “WTFF” (from Stain)Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society, “Iola” (from Mandance)Vernon Reid & Bill Frisell, “Size 10 1/2 Sneaks” (from Smash & Scatteration)Free Form Funky Freqs, “Outer Arm” (from Hymn of the 3rd Galaxy)

This time it's personal. Many of my happiest music memories are of performances at Michael Dorf's Knitting Factory between the mid-Eighties and the early-2000's. Michael must have heard thousands of bands in those years but when I asked him who we should hail on Deep Focus, he answered immediately: Sonny Sharrock.  Sonny, who reinvented the guitar to suit his own extravagant purposes every time he played it, left us nearly 28 years ago but he is not forgotten. His latest project is an EP, 4 + 1 equals 5 for May 25. which reflects on the murder of George Floyd and the spirit of the protests that arose in its wake. He also teams with visionary drummer Greg Fox and guitarists Sahsa-Frere Jones and Grey McMurray in Body Meπa, which recently released The Work Is Slow, a mind-melter of rock abstraction. Gibbs joined host Jason P. Woodbury for a wide-ranging discussion this week on Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions.

Harmony Holiday, a writer, dancer, and archivist, joins Nikita Gale and Alexander Provan to speak about Black performers whose songs and struggles reflect the ongoing trauma of the “African holocaust.” They discuss the pressure to pander to white audiences as well as the impulse to seek a form of expression (and of being) that is chosen and not imposed by force. They listen to songs written and recorded by Holiday's father, the soul singer Jimmy Holiday, as well as to Albert Ayler, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Amiri Baraka, and Kanye West.Holiday's essay “The Black Catatonic Scream,” a meditation on Black silence, was published by Triple Canopy last year. Her book of poems on the “African holocaust,” naming, and erasure, Maafa, is being published by Fence Books in 2021. Music from the Early 21st Century è cointestato a Bobby Previte, batteria, Saft, organo Hammond, Fender Rhodes e MiniMoog, e Nels Cline, chitarra.

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter It's true: After a three-month hiatus, the Burning Ambulance podcast is back, with an interview with legendary saxophonist Peter Brötzmann! Brötzmann first emerged onto the global scene in the late '60s — he released his first album, For Adolphe Sax, named for the inventor of the saxophone, in 1967. A year later, he made Machine Gun, which is a landmark record not just in free jazz but in jazz history, period. A lot of critics have said that the music on Machine Gun was more extreme than anything that had come before, mostly because Brötzmann and the other two saxophonists, Willem Breuker and Evan Parker, seemed to be going even farther on their horns than John Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler had gone, but when you pay close attention to it you’ll hear that there are actually riffs — really big, honking, fist-pumping riffs, especially at the end. And Brötzmann has said many times that the music was inspired by Lionel Hampton’s big band, which had four saxophonists up front blowing in unison. I’ve been a fan of Brötzmann’s for a long time, and I’ve seen him live twice. The first time was in January 1997, at the Cooler in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, with Thomas Borgman on saxophone, William Parker on bass, and Rashid Bakr on drums, a show that was released on CD under the name The Cooler Suite. The other time was at Tonic, with a version of his quartet Die Like A Dog. On record, that band usually featured Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, William Parker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums, but at this gig Kondo wasn’t there for whatever reason, and Roy Campbell subbed in. I was also a big fan of Last Exit, a group formed by Bill Laswell that included Brötzmann, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, and Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums. Their music was a combination of free jazz, metal, and funk, totally improvised in the moment, and some of it is amazing. It used to be hard to find their CDs, but now you can get almost all of their albums on Laswell’s Bandcamp page. This interview was recorded back in early October, and a lot of it’s about his new solo album I Surrender Dear, and about his connections to jazz history. He really loves old school players like Don Byas and Coleman Hawkins, and he absolutely loves the blues, so we talk a lot about that. I think you’ll really get a sense of him as a music fan — he talks about all the bands he saw growing up in Germany in the '50s and '60s. We talk about what he looks for in collaborations, and how he chooses projects, too, 'cause he gets more invitations than he accepts. We also talk about his visual art, which is just as important as the music — he had originally planned to be a visual artist, with music as a side thing, but it didn’t work out that way. Still, he’s designed almost all of his own album covers for the last 50 years, and he’s got an instantly recognizable visual style, very blocky and heavy like a printmaker. It’s a perfect complement to his sound on the horn. And at the very end of our conversation, I ask him about Ginger Baker, who had died just a few days before we spoke. The two of them played together for three gigs in 1987 in a band that included Sonny Sharrock and Nicky Skopelitis on guitars, and Jan Kazda on bass, under the name No Material. So that’s where this conversation ends. I hope you enjoy the interview, and thanks for listening. If you do enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. For just $5 a month, you can help keep this show and Burning Ambulance as a whole active and thriving. Thanks! Music heard in this episode: Peter Brötzmann, "I Surrender Dear" (I Surrender Dear)

In 2018, during an episode of Jeremiah Cymerman's excellent 5049 Podcast, Wendy — who uses gender-neutral pronouns — made a passing mention of their love for the Australian death-metal band Portal, and at that point, I knew I wanted to speak to them for Heavy Metal Bebop. Topics discussed include: how hearing Sonny Sharrock helped expand their musical horizons, why Portal is their favorite band ever, why they feel like an outsider in both jazz and metal, how Birthing Hips flourished within the context of higher education, why they're not a fan of jazz covers of pop and rock tunes, how their early love for Pantera informs the music of Editrix, what they took away from playing with Curtis Fuller and Earl Klugh, and much more.

DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Mollie's first forays into the world of competitive pinball. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) Browns lost to the Raiders for more reasons than the mere lack of "irrefutable evidence" being used in replay to overturn that first down that would have ended the game with Cleveland victorious. Terrence Mitchell's broken wrist could be the fallen domino that turns this promising team full of talent into a bad team with not enough talent. Baker Mayfield might need to learn how to throw a more catchable pass, and the Browns still haven't had a winning record after 4 games since 2001. Taking a closer look at the Mole Skin notebook Mollie bought for Mike. (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:09:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “TV Party” (begins at the 1:18:00 mark) Mollie asks if Shambles qualifies as a fan hobo and almost gets bitten by Shambles for saying it... The Cleveland Indians are about to begin their postseason run! ...Finally. Sexy form fitting team Chelsea underwear is fine because they're meant to fit under athletic shorts, but if you go to high school in Hamilton County, Tennessee you're not even allowed to wear athletic shorts, and you can "blame the girls" for why that is, apparently. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:56:00 mark) Corey Kluber's strikout rate caused alarm all year but it's recently been off the charts great again, and his timing for this return to form couldn't be better.  Mollie’s PuhFooFuh Spotlight Part 3: The Oakland Raiders crazed fans in general are all fan hobos, but Dr. Death's level of crazy even stands out in this sea of crazy. (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:47:00 mark) Counting some of the ways you can measure your Cleveland Indians, unlike last season when they streaked to end the regular season and ran out of gas, are set up this time around to peak now in the postseason. Mike decides to watch Premier League soccer instead of Division 1 NCAA football on Saturday afternoons, now all he has to do is find a team to root for and it could prove to be a much harder decision than you might think. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ Check out Lachlan MacKinnon’s best selling book, ‘Let Me Tell You A Story: Small Stories Of A Large Family’! Episode 15 features an interview with avant-garde jazz pianist Dave Burrell, who is being honored at the 2018 Vision Festival at Roulette in Brooklyn and who performed at Cecil Taylor's funeral on April 10, the day before this interview was recorded. Dave Burrell has been a respected and admired figure on the free jazz scene since he arrived in New York in 1965. He was born in Ohio, but raised in Harlem before his parents moved to Hawaii for much of his childhood—he later studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the late 1960s, he recorded as a leader and played on albums by Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Noah Howard, Sonny Sharrock, Sunny Murray, and many others. He moved to France in 1969 and played at the Pan-African Festival and recorded for the legendary BYG Actuel label. In this hour-long interview, he discusses his classic albums; his relationships with Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray, Archie Shepp and others; his plans for the 2018 Vision Festival; and much more.
