In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I talk about our Soul Family. There's a chapter in my book, The Journey of My Mother's Son titled, “Connection.” It's about the need for human connection. If you'd like to read it, you can check it out here. Sandy and I are very blessed to have a wonderful blood family. We are doubly blessed to have an incredible soul family throughout the country. I say it all the time that sightseeing and exploring national parks is an awesome component of this journey, but by far, the greatest blessing that we get from the road is the ability to meet and connect with strangers who end up becoming family. As I'm sure you know by now, from my recent emails and social media posts, I'm honored to be an associate producer on a project by my friend and a member of our soul family, Aliza Hava. I've had Aliza on my podcast twice, and we just immediately connected. We became part of each other's soul family instantly. Her and her husband, Avi drove over two hours to meet Sandy and I for dinner after one of my book signings in Brookings, Oregon. Like Aliza, we connected immediately with Avi as well. There are just some people in the world who you know are part of your tribe the minute you meet them. It seems like you've known them for years. One of the songs on her new album is titled, “Soul Family.” The moment I heard the song, I had goosebumps and the hair on my arms and neck stood up. It resonated with me in a special way. Mainly because we have blessed with such a large soul family. I wasn't planning on releasing another monologue this week, but the song was so powerful that I wanted to talk about it to my listeners and Aliza is such an amazing human, that she gave me permission to play the song at the end of the show. This is only the second time that this song has been heard by the masses. The world premiere of the song was played on KZUM FM 89.3 out of Omaha, Nebraska on September 15, 2024 at the end of an interview with Aliza. I've also included Aliza's story behind the song that she shared during the KZUM interview. That too, is a pretty powerful set-up for the song. I hope that all of my listeners enjoy the song and the story behind, but most of all, I hope that you all find magic in your own soul families just as Sandy and I have. Additional show notes: The rights to the song, Soul Family are fully owned by Aliza Hava. The song was used by permission in the show. “...rings with authentic grit.” -Bill Copeland Music News“With naturally gifted vocal command, Manville explores the intricacies of love, life, and the finer things with a sharp eye on details. Her lyrics are heartfelt and genuine and delivered with just the right amount of instinct and emotion."- Douglas Sloan, Metronome MagazineSome People Sing, released in the fall of 2017, is the second solo album from Kirsten Manville, the follow-up to her 2013 release Come With Me. With elements of Americana, folk, country, and blues, the singer/songwriter creates songs that feel like they may have come straight from journal entries. Deceptively simple lyrics paint pictures, tell stories, and evoke a range of emotions. From the pain of finding and losing love, and hard times in a down-on-its-luck town, to the small pleasures of line-dried laundry and homemade pie, and the escapism of a romantic night for two, Kirsten's warm and sultry voice draws the listener in, infusing the songs with feeling and depth.“Music, and specifically singing and songwriting, have always been the primary way I have tried to make sense of the world and the ups and downs of life,” she says. “And hopefully, listeners can relate to the emotions or stories depicted in my songs, and take comfort in knowing someone else is feeling the same way or has the same questions or wants the same things. The is what music has always done for me. Plus, singing is really fun, and it just makes me feel good.”Some People Sing was a Top 5 album pick in the January 2018 issue of Metronome Magazine, and Kirsten was featured on the cover of the magazine in March 2018. The song “...but Down” was included in the Alternate Root Magazine's weekly top 10 in November of 2017.Kirsten's songs have received radio airplay on a number stations both in the United States and overseas, including WUMB and KZUM. Her song “A Simple Life” spent time in the Top 30 charts (peaking at number 11) of The Globe Radio, an Adult Album Alternative format internet radio station, and her song “Play My Guitar” has been in the Top 20 songs on WOSRadio. In July 2013 she was a finalist in the songwriting competition at the Ossipee Valley Music Festival, and in February 2016 she was a winner in the Maine Songwriters Whittlesey Barn Songwriting/Performance Contest. Kirsten performs regularly in the north east, and has had the honor of opening for well-known folk artists Don White and Joe Jencks.

RevKess is joined by his new co-host Crow. Crow has been a guest on the channel a couple of times and has been a friend of both RevKess and KaliSara for around a decade. He joins the show to fill the chair left open with KaliSara's recent leave-taking to spend more time with her family and her writing career. We wish her nothing but the best and look forward to having her visit from time to time as her schedule allows - like when book three of her Runespells series come out! Crow comes to the channel with years of experience as a community leader with the Order of the Red Grail. He is the high priest of ORG and has been active in the Lincoln, NE Pagan community for a number of years. This first episode is spent allowing the listeners to get to know him a bit. With ramblings and musings from both he and RevKess, the show goes everywhere from a basic intro of Crow to a discussion on elder-care with many stops in between. This is also the first episode recorded in the KZUM Community Radio production studio. A HUGE thank you to KZUM for allowing PMP to use their facilities. We will soon be broadcasting through their podcast stream. Please visit the PMPChannel Facebook for details on that.
It's the annual KZUM Radio Fall Fundraiser, with special guest Andrea Perron ! KZUM Radio is celebrating 40 years, and from day one they've depended on listener support for the bulk of their operating budget. We're also celebrating a little early - the Exploring Unexplained Phenomena radio program turns 34 years old in October. It's the world's longest-running paranormal talk radio program. Hey - it gives me a place to hang out with cool friends, drink strong coffee and talk to interesting guests from all over the world (grin...). Like Andrea Perron ! I appreciate her because she's highly educated and has a great deal of good old common sense, she's articulate and she holds opinions and views and she's not afraid to share them ! She's had a number of extraordinary experiences and she will tell you what she's learned from them. Andrea Perron is our special guest this Saturday on the EUP radio program.
KZUM's Steffan Decker speaks with Dan Hohensee, director of the Lincoln Public Schools Career Academy.
Today, we are going to do something a little different. Last week, an old high school friend of mine, Andy Avila, who DJ’s for a local radio station, KZUM in Lincoln Nebraska, asked if I would attend an interview with our old wrestling coach, Mr. Thomas Christie. Coach is retiring from Lincoln Public Schools after 43 golden years and Andy wanted to do something special to recognize a man who has influenced hundreds of young men and women to be responsible, motivated adults. His contributions to Lincoln Public Schools is second to none. His contributions to Lincoln High Wrestling is unmatched. I believe I can speak on behalf of any wrestler he has ever coached….thanks TC. Your leadership and influence made all of us better men on and off the mat. And for that, we salute you The following interview was taped live on KZUM 89.3 on June 16th, 2018 and should be credited to Andy Avila aka DJ Aztec. Also in this interview is Adrian Martinez aka The Champ….who was a 2 time state champion and who contributed to Lincoln High’s Team State Title in 1992. I’ll end this intro with one of my favorite quotes from Coach Christie, “It’s not how you start the race, it’s how you finish”. Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce, Mr. Thomas Christie
Join us on June 17th at 7pm central time as we speak with Philipp Kessler. Philipp Kessler is a man of many hats. An accomplished High Priest in the Covenant of Kernunnos Tradition, Phil has been an active practitioner for 25 years and has followed his passion for knowledge by climbing the ivory tower of the written word, from some of the oldest available works to modern, in the moment writings. This desire for knowledge has led him to change his hat to pursue another passion, which is broadcasting. He has been co-host of the longest-running pagan radio show, Murphy’s Magic Mess, for 8 and a half years and has been co-host of Pagan Musings on Blog Talk Radio for 8 years and Pagan Weekly News, also available on Blog Talk Radio, for 5 years and co-host of Lavender Hill, a weekly LGBTQIA news show on KZUM public radio for 6 years. Phil changes his hat again and is an editor and the founder of Saturn Returns Publishing. He turns around again, changing his hat as he does, and he is an author of pagan fiction & poetry, with many stories in different genres (from horror to speculative historical fiction) in the works. His first title in the Dark of the Moon, New Beginnings series, Backfire, came out on April 1, 2017, quickly followed by volume two in that series, Waterfall, on May 1. He’s slowing down just a bit and expects to have book three in the series, Landslide, out sometime early July 2017. But most of all, he wears the hat of butler to his 3 feline rulers, tending to their every need with utmost devotion. Look forward to much more coming from this energetic and thoughtful author...he will be producing marvelous works as long as the hats hold out...and the cats let him!
