In a judgement passed down in the Western Cape High Court on the 1st of August, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) has been ordered to pay a Lavender Hill teenager nearly R5 million for severe injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident about seven years ago. The case stems from an accident in which the now teenager suffered injuries to his head as an 8-year-old. Acting Judge Ajay Bhoopchand of the Western Cape High Court also had harsh words for the RAF when awarding the 16-year-old boy R4.9m, saying the boy's township education did not mean he could not have had a promising career if he had not suffered the traumatic brain injurySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With no big new releases, James Cameron-Wilson explains that the UK box office is down 36%, with Back to Black still #1. At #5 is horror film Abigail about a kidnapped ballerina. Extremely gory, it is also increasingly clichéd. James was impressed by Sometimes I Think About Dying at #19, a minimalist drama in which Daisy Ridley is a shy loner. Nuanced, it makes the audience work but is moving and sticks in the memory. Out for home viewing is 1951's A Lavender Hill Mob, with Alec Guinness a meek bank clerk with nefarious ambitions. Chuck Swindoll said, "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." Question to ponder. What good can come from trouble, from crime, from trauma, from brokenness, from any traumatic experience? Then again so time and time we hear, what good can come from gangsterism, from places and outskirts like Kyaleshiya, Mitchell's Plain, Belhar, Athlone or Lavender Hill? Trouble neither your circumstances don't define you. Its our Actions that define the Outcome. So many are blamed, looked down at, frowned at, despite them wanting to change or not. We cannot cast a stone or walk on by thinking our lives are okay. Do you know that some well known Men and Women have fallen or succumb to trouble at their door. In the Bible Jesus chose to work with those who have fallen, been in the wrong place at the wrong time, in and out of prison for theft, shoplifting, shooting, gangsterism, drugs you name it, but because of their troubled past, they too can be transformed. So trouble can be seen as your saving Grace for God to step in and do what He wants to. For Him to show you the way, his love and walk you through the steps from strange to rearrange. From distance to closeness. From losing yourself to gaining respect for yourself with Divine help along the way. Elder Audrey Folson shares Transformed by Trouble so may this word be shared, heard and be accomplished to where its sent. May you come expectant and be Blessed by this word. In His love and Grace. Kaaps is a language widely spoken in the bleak townships of Cape Town, South Africa. It's often denigrated as a lesser form of Afrikaans – the language that was used as a tool of white supremacy during the apartheid era. Spoken predominately by working class people on the Cape Flats, Kaaps is associated with negative stereotypes – its speakers denigrated as uneducated, "ghetto" layabouts involved in gang culture. But a new, burgeoning movement led by hip-hop artists, academics, writers and film makers is actively changing that perception. They want to reclaim Afrikaaps to restore the linguistic, cultural and racial dignity of a formerly disenfranchised people. The writer Lindsay Johns travels to Cape Town to meet the activists determined to assert the worth and pride of the people who speak Afrikaaps. But of course, the Nuggets aren't all the news — it's Friday, so we're talking about a new queer cultural district, a rash of shootings on the city's streets, and question whether Trinidad has lost its shine. Diné comedian Joshua Emerson is back with producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies to break down all the local stories that mattered this week. SPRING-HEELED JACKIt was London in October of 1837 when a young lady by the name of Mary Stevens was walking back to work in Lavender Hill where she was employed as a servant. After a visit to her parents in Battersea, she was making her way through Clapham Common, when a figure suddenly leapt out at her from a dark alley. He quickly immobilised the poor girl with a bear like hold and than began to kiss her upon her face, ripping at her clothes and touching her flesh with his sharp animal like clawed hands. Letting out a horrified scream, Mary's attacker quickly ran from the scene as several residents rushed to her aid. Mary would later described her aggressor's grip as 'cold and clammy as those of a corpse'The following day there was another sighting near Mary's home. A coachman severely injured himself as the entity that would later become known as Spring Heeled Jack, jumped out in front of him, causing him to loose control of his carriage and crash. There were several witnesses who testified to seeing the figure escape by jumping over a 9ft high wall, letting out a high-pitched, ringing cackle as he went.Resources - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring-heeled_Jackhttps://non-aliencreatures.fandom.com/wiki/Spring-Heeled_JackThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xxJoin us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thewhisperingwoodspodcast/Join us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/thewhispwoodsJoin us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thewhisperingwoodspodcastVisit our Website - https://www.thewhisperingwoodspodcast.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we chew on a sweet piece of 1966 bubblegum, "Stop! Get a Ticket" by The Clefs of Lavender Hill(1:11). People say it's Beatle-esque, but we think it's better described as Hollies-esque, The handclaps (and drumbeats) will be what you remember the most, but don't sleep on the "race for your love" lyrics or you're gonna lose your baby! In 1967, Cleveland's Statesmen paid the fare and released their version of the song (36:02). It's slower and less peppy, BUT they add organ and FUZZ, as well as some va-va-voom vibrato on the vocals. That same year, Nederbeat high numbers The Groovy's heeded the train whistle and their ride kicks off a la "Last Train to Clarksville" (49:48). This one'll get the guitar gearheads feelin' groovy - a fast and fun ride with jittery rhythm guitar and lotsa hooks! Catch it!!!

The Lavender Hill Mob stars Alec Guinness as Henry Holland, an unambitious London bank clerk — and unlikely bank robber. When he meets the eccentric artist Alfred Pendlebury (played by famous comic/character actor Stanley Holloway), the two together hatch a plot to smuggle gold bullion out of the country in the form of miniature Eiffel towers. What unfolds is a heist-comedy that stands apart as perhaps the most purely entertaining film included on the Vatican Film List. Are heist films morally problematic? Are British criminals cooler than Italian criminals? What is cockney? Thomas and James are joined by author, actor, screenwriter, and mutual friend Paul Laudiero to discuss these and other questions surrounding the film. Next on Criteria, filmmaker Nathan Douglas returns to the show to discuss Dekalog 3. Featuring special guest and heist film aficionado Matt Clark (@TheMplsMatt)! This Ealing train keeps a-rolling with another comedy of errors! Alec Guinness (again?) is Dutch, a bean-counter who’s protected government gold for 20 years, quietly plotting ways to rip them off in a big way. His plan accelerates beyond sustainability when he meets Al, an artist-turned-tchotchke maker with dreams of pursuing his passion instead of stuffing tourists’ suitcases. What separates THE LAVENDER HILL MOB from the other films we’ve covered is its willingness to show us the solidarity shared between two (and then among four) criminals aspiring toward a better life – together – despite class objections. The Black Lives Matter global movement has heightened awareness of racism over the last few years, but not more so than in recent months after the killing of George Floyd by a policeman in USA. It has heightened racial tensions with some (mostly white people) countering that "all lives matter". In this episode Lane, Minah (Beautiful Gate, Philippi) and Erica (New World Foundation, Lavender Hill) discuss this issue of Black Lives Matter. They reject the "all lives matter" notion and go further to emphasise that in Cape Town its not just Black Lives that matter but that black lives on the Cape Flats should also matter and that often, in policy, practice and attitudes they have not.

In the 1951 movie "The Lavender Hill Mob" four men, led by Alec Guinness as Henry "Dutch" Holland, plan and carry out the robbery of a load of gold bullion worth several million pounds. Director Charles Crichton has created one of the best British films as ranked by the British Film Institute. This heist movie is brought to life by the marvelous acting of Alex Guinness and Stanley Holloway as Alfred "Al" Pendlebury. Contributing to the action are Sid James as Lackery Wood, Marjorie Fielding as Mrs. Chalk, Shorty Fisher played by Alflie Bass, Edie Martin as Miss Evesham and an armored car load of other excellent actors. Henry Holland is not an unambitious bank clerk, but the mastermind behind the robbery of millions. Have a good time as we visit about the mob.

In off the Shelf, we looked at Third Window's Uzumasa Limelight, Classic Ealing comedy the Lavender Hill Mob and Godard's Band of Outsiders. We also have a ringer. Sir Alec Guinness had already proven both his comedic and dramatic prowess by the time he came to Ealing Studios’ “The Lavender Hill Mob” in 1951, a point in his career when he was making two films a year. He’d continue working in both comedy and drama throughout his career, but we’re lucky to still be talking about his comedies because “The Lavender Hill Mob” is an absolute delight. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Sir Alec Guinness series with a conversation about his seventh film, directed by Charles Crichton. We talk about the comedy in this film and why it still works so well six and a half decades later. We chat about Crichton and his wonderful directing, and compare this film with his last film, 1988’s “A Fish Called Wanda,” which he directed and co-wrote. We discuss Guinness and the other actors making up the titular mob — Stanley Holloway, Sidney James and Alfie Bass — and look at what they each brought to the table. We chat about our favorite moments of the film and why, even with its problems, it’s still an utterly enjoyable caper film. And we point out several familiar faces that you may miss scattered throughout the film — see if you can catch them! It’s an absolute delight of a crime caper film, one which we have a great time talking about. Tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!! Inwoners leef in konstante vrees weens bendegevegte. Vanessa Poonah het die strate van een van Kaapstad se mees berugte bendegebiede, met die ironiese naam Lavender Hill, ingevaar en dié verslag saamgestel.
