So if you are in town, you know the drill, head on down to Kelly’s Pour Favor at 6:30, and listen to some music, have a few pops with JR and me, and let my listeners know what you are doing in paradise. It’s always a lot of fun and they have that great rooftop patio that’s great for interviews. So don’t be shy, a couple of drinks will solve that, come talk to us and if you are a business in Puerto Vallarta, and you want to tell us what you do, what services you perform here, come on by and let’s talk. So that’s Tuesday May 8th from 6:30 till 8. I want to catch the sunset. But hey, if there’s a bunch of you, and you can make it interesting, I will forgo that Puerto Vallarta Sunset, just to bring you to my listeners. And by the way, I have quite a few great interviews set up, and a couple of daytrips I’m doing, but if you have someone who you think I should be interviewing, let me know, Send me an email at pvtravelshow@gmail.com or Puertovallartatravelshow@gmail.com, and I will do my best to bring you that interview. How Do You Read an ATM Touch Screen in Spanish? I got a message from my buddy Marty. And Marty has tried to use the ATM machines in Vallarta but is a little concerned because the touch screen is in Spanish and it confuses him a little bit. So, he asked me if I can help and yes Marty, when I get in town, I will take screenshots of the whole process. I’ll even use a variety of bank machines, so everyone can see the whole process, and I’ll bring that to you in the coming weeks complete with screenshots and arrows and all that jazz, so Marty, great idea. I’ll let you know when I have all that for you. Barry's Flying to Puerto Vallarta May 6th [caption id="attachment_2972" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Southwest Airlines to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So, I made my reservations on Southwest Airlines out of LAX. It was $264.00 round trip. It’ a great price and you can take a second piece of luggage free. If you need it that is. I hope they can keep the service running but the last few times I’ve flown Southwest, the plane was only half to three quarters full. Anyway, I also reserved my Airbnb and I did things a little different. I actually chose one that had no reviews. The pictures look good. It’s a new [caption id="attachment_2974" align="alignright" width="300"] The Cross above Puerto Vallarta[/caption] listing. It’s up on the hill downtown like above Calle Allende, Up on the way to the cross. It had air conditioning which is a must in May, a pool and a killer view of the bay from the pool area and the rooftop. So, we’ll see. I got the place for $32 US per night, and that included cleaning fees and taxes and all that jazz, so I will report back, but so far, for round trip air, and 9 nights at the b & b, I’m in for $ 552.00 US. Not bad. How to Protect From Being a Victim of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Mexico When I was looking over these Airbnb listings I noticed how few of these places have CO detectors and smoke alarms. I don’t know if you heard the story of the family in Playa Del Carmen who died due to carbon monoxide poisoning they concluded, right? [caption id="attachment_2967" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Carbon Monoxide Detectors For Condos in Mexico[/caption] Here’s the story from The Washington Post Dated March 25th, Autopsies concluded an Iowa couple and their two children found dead inside their rented Mexico condo were victims of toxic gas inhalation, Mexican authorities said Saturday, and they reiterated no signs indicate foul play. The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office said all four family members staying on the Caribbean coast in Tulum were killed by asphyxiation, and that “any violent act or suicide has been discounted.” Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41, his wife, Amy Marie Sharp, 38, and their children Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7, were found dead inside the condo, Mexican authorities confirmed Friday. Photos published by the prosecutor’s office show firemen in respirators and other authorities in anti-contamination suits examining gas connections and the unit’s oven. The Sharp family appeared to be dead for 36 to 48 hours when they were discovered, the office said. The family had been reported missing by their immediate family members early Friday morning to police in Creston, Iowa, which is located about 70 miles southwest of Des Moines. Kevin and Amy Sharp informed their family members in Iowa that they had arrived safely at their vacation condominium on March 15. I have a link to that story in the show notes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/03/23/police-confirm-iowa-family-of-four-found-dead-in-mexico-condo/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4a485a121c16 So that is a sad story for sure, and when you see their pictures, it’s really heartbreaking. So, what do we do to protect ourselves from this happening to one of us? The truth is, where I live in Southern California, a carbon monoxide detector is required in a home that I sell. Not everyone has one. But it is a requirement if you sell your home, or if you are a landlord. The last time I was in town, I’m sure I had a Carbon Monoxide Poisoning moment. I was staying in an apartment that I have rented before, Airbnb, and I knew this place had a certain rotten egg smell emitting from the drains from time to time. When we got there, Jose, the owner noticed the strong odor when he opened the place up, so he opened all the windows and aired it out. The next morning, when I got up, I went to stand up, and almost fell down. I was having a tough time focusing my eyes and standing up straight. I opened up some windows to get some fresh air, and then I started feeling like I needed to throw up, so I dry heaved for about 3 minutes. I mean, it didn’t make any sense. I hadn’t been drinking, I had a wonderful meal at Florios the night before, it was weird. But as I started to get more fresh air into the apartment, the better I started to feel. But wow, I’m pretty sure that happened to me. Later that day, when I was on the beach interviewing people in front of Cuates y Cuetes, I got a call from Jose asking if he could let a workman in to change out a gas valve. Hummm. I told him what happened, and suggested he get a CO detector. So, anyway, I’m not taking any chances. This time I’m bringing my own CO detector. $20 bucks. Done. Have you stayed in a place like that? You know, with the sewer smells coming up the drain pipes? I have more than once in Vallarta. So you be careful in these condos and Airbnbs. They are not required equipment. Down Vallarta BMX Bike Race is Back Down Vallarta will be returning to town, it’s all happening May 13 at 4:30 and they are going to be racing right past my bnb I believe. I’ll let you know. But it’s the BMX Dirt Bike race downhill, from the Cross on the hill above Downtown, down, to the Malecon. I have video of last year’s event in the show notes so check it out in the show notes or if you are in town. Catch the event. It’s free. And we like free. Okay we need to get on with this week’s show. These are places where good home cooking is dished out with a smile, English is spoken, a place where you walk in and see the person in charge actually working the floor. A place where you [caption id="attachment_2941" align="alignright" width="278"] Tammy Carruthers Prust, Nacho Daddy. A place that an expat can feel like it’s homey. It’s a safe place. A good, feel a karmic location. When I walked in to Nacho Daddy the morning of the interview, Sean and Tammy were wrapping things up, clearing off tables, serving beverages topping off coffee for a group of expats, there must have been 20 or 30 of them, and they were playing Bunco. You know what bunco is, it’s a dice game. They were all having a great time and well, it looked like it was the place to be, if you lived in Paradise, and you wanted to have comradery with your fellow Canadian or American Expat. I first met Catherine on my very first business trip so to speak in Vallarta. I was recording my first interviews and the show was in the infancy stages. I was sitting in Una Familia Restaurant on Libertad, having lunch and Catherine came in and sat down at a table near mine with her doggie, and after a time we struck up a conversation. She talked about the Boutique Theater, and I told her a little about my podcast. I love theater so, well, I do get some of you wondering why I do so many interviews of entertainment venues, it’s because I was really involved in the theater arts in high school. I went to school with folks like Kevin Spacey, of course back then, he was Kevin Fowler. I think his middle name was Spacey, but yet I digress. Mare Winningham, April Winchell, Clint Howard. I mean, it was brutal competing in a LAUSD, Los Angeles Unified School District Drama Festival those days let me tell you. I mean, if you were competing against Kevin Fowler, I mean Spacey in a serious monologue category? Ha! Yes, he was that good way back then folks. But seriously, I loved to get in front of people and perform. When I didn’t make the Taft High Men’s Volleyball Varsity team, one of my buddies said to me, Kessler, forget regular P.E., they need guys to lift girls in Dance Production. You have to wear a leotard, but all you need to do is lift chicks. Well, I was all in, right? [caption id="attachment_2938" align="alignright" width="300"] Kitchen, Nacho Daddy, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So yeah, I’m in to the arts, sorry guys. Anyway, when I saw that Catherine was doing TED Talks at the Boutique Theater, I thought, you know, we talk about people dumping their life in the states for a simpler life in paradise, and Catherine is living the life that I really secretly wish I was living. I’ll just live vicariously through her. Let me show you what I’m talking about. Let’s go to the sand, on a couple of lounge chairs in from to Langostino’s on Playa Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta, and lets meet my friend, and soon to be yours, Catherine Caldera. An Interview with Agostino Di Donna and Ali Ardissone from D'angolo di Napoli Italian Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Also JR Discusses Puerto Vallarta Weather in June and a new Sustainable Tourist Attraction the "Turicleto" [caption id="attachment_699" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Bella Napoli Italian Restaurant Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Listen to The Podcast! Subscribe to The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show on iTunes Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado [caption id="attachment_193" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa Restaurant, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Restaurant, and now, at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. That’s the Vista Grill that used to be up on the hill. Well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where You get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and what’s best, is it’s right there on the beach. You can enjoy dinner under the stars, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today I have a very special guest but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 5th of June, 2017. Well, June has arrived and everyone is getting ready for the rains to come. By this time of year the usually lush vegetation on the hillsides and well, just about everywhere is looking dry and in some cases, actually brownish. Last month I took a hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach and I gotta tell you, I was kinda shocked at how dry things were, the usually lush vegetation wasn’t so lush so yes, we are eagerly awaiting the rain here. And when it comes…we will get lots of it but not all at once, in fact let’s go to a conversation I had with JR a while back where we talked about the weather in a [caption id="attachment_31" align="alignright" width="300"] JR in PV Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Your guide for 30 years.[/caption] previous episode…. Listen to The Podcast! Thanks JR for that information and if you want to hear more of this conversation about weather with JR, go to episode 3 of the show where we talk about weather, [caption id="attachment_109" align="aligncenter" width="800"] What to Expect When You Arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Aitport[/caption] bugs and what to expect when you land at the Puerto Vallarta Airport. I spent half of May in Vallarta and the weather was excellent. Not too humid and not too hot. Lots of cool ocean breezes, just perfect, and many others I know even like June here, but the humidity is inching up, and the rain is inevitable but hey, the storms come for a brief time like an hour or three, the lightning storms are so cool. I have a video on the website where I am doing a review on an Airbnb on the Malecon, I will link it up for you to see in the show notes, you know, after put up the video of the place, I couldn’t get a reservation there! Darn it! I do that to myself every time! Anyway, about half way through the video, I have a cool lightning storm for you to see. [embed]https://youtu.be/i_Eel-WUyiY[/embed] At any rate, the rain should be coming. So we are looking forward to getting all greened up again in paradise sometime in the next week or two if all goes as planned. A brand new attraction on the in Downtown Puerto Vallarta is the new “Turicleto” From the Banderas News…. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - A new, innovative, fun and free way to visit all of the tourist attractions in the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta was introduced this week - and it's called the 'Turicleto.' This sustainable vehicle, which is powered by the energy produced while pedaling, has an approximate capacity of 20 people, ten of whom are working the pedals that make the Turicleto move. “We know that our tourist vocation drives us to be innovative, to be in tune with nature and to diversify the attractions in the first block of the heart of Puerto Vallarta," asserted Arturo Dávalos Peña Mayor when giving the official introduction to the new vehicle. The Vehicle will be accompanied by a bilingual tour guide, and allow you to enjoy a new experience while exercising and learning about the culture of the city, constituting a novel attraction for visitors. Dávalos Peña said that this new tourist attraction joins the efforts made by this administration to rescue and revitalize the city center, in addition to the installation of scenic lighting on the Malecón and reinforcement of public lighting throughout the city center; as well as the colorful installation of decorated letters that spell "Puerto Vallarta," which has been very successful in providing national and international promotion to this destination. For his part, the Municipal Tourism Director, Ramón González Lomelí, announced that the World Tourism Organization declared 2017 The Year Of Sustainable Tourism, and by instructions from the mayor, all mechanisms are sought to ensure that Puerto Vallarta stays within the margins of this program. He pointed out that there will be two daily tours, at 9 am and 12 pm, each accompanied by a bilingual guide. The vehicle has harnesses for user safety and spaces for water bottles. Though the ride is free, voluntary contributions are requested to keep the vehicle self-sustaining, which would include maintenance and economic support for the guides. [embed]https://youtu.be/e7_t-l1i_rE[/embed] I have some pictures of the Turicleto and links to the Banderas News Article at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com. Episode 22 in the show notes so catch glimpse of this Sustainable Tourist Attraction they are peddling. Get it? Okay, so not to be contrary here, but would you volunteer to be a peddler? I don’t want to get into fat shaming here, but are they going to have weight limits for this vehicle? These are questions I suppose they will just have to work out I guess. Let’s see how this works. I hope it does! Should be fun! That reminds me, I need to get together with JR in an episode to discuss his map of the Downtown area. I would like to give you a tour of the area with JR, an audio tour that is. By the way I have a link to all his maps in my show notes as well as at the top of the website at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com . If you are going to Vallarta, download and print out those maps. You will be glad you did. He has bus stops, taco stands, the streets properly marked and some points of interest all on those maps. Don’t leave home without them and you will find them on my site and on JR’s sight at www.vallartainfo.com. Okay, and speaking of downtown Puerto Vallarta, let’s get on with the show and an interview with a couple you are going to like. Subscribe to The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show on iTunes Listen to the Podcast in the Player Below! Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa group of Restaurants, La Palapa and The Eldorado [caption id="attachment_308" align="alignleft" width="300"] Puerto Vallarta by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] Restaurant on the Southside of town, right down on the beach in Puerto Vallarta and if you play your cards right you can catch Alberto Perez singing and playing the Somba de Puerto Vallarta just like I did the other night, while enjoying dinner under the stars, toes in the sand at the waters edge. So romantic, so Puerto Vallarta. If you haven’t been here yet, take my advice and get your selves down here. The people of Vallarta await you with open arms. Take my word for it. This week I have a real treat for you but first, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 27th of March, 2017. As you may or may not know, the Puerto Vallarta Airport is going through a remodeling process so not everything is hunky dory. The Mexican Bank Affiliated ATM machines that were in the lobby of the airport, then taken away during the remodel are [caption id="attachment_307" align="alignright" width="300"] Puerto Vallarta by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] finally making it back into the lobby of the airport. Word has it that there are now at least two machines back, and thanks to Yael who works at the airport for giving me the scoop. Yael is going to come on the show and..Sure... I'd love to see and talk about what u do... I'm an airplane Dispatcher and also starting to do some vids for a YouTube channel to talk about vallarta, pointed at ppl that make it a home, subjects such as where, when, do, don't, expensive, most value etc Also planning on focusing in micro restaurants that have flavors most have probably never tasted. For sure... I also provide info on how the flights are doing... Specially in weekends I know it is rough not knowing when ur loved ones will get out and have to wait ages for them to make it out in the lobby where you buy your travel voucher for your taxi or van to your hotel or lodging. That makes it easier to get your pesos when you land at the airport with your ATM debit card. For more information about money exchange and cell plans and what to expect when you arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Airport, you should listen to episodes 2 and 3 of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show where we talk about all of those important items and more so listen to the podcasts or read my shownotes to those shows. And if you would like to watch a cool video I made which is actually a primmer for those of you who don’e knoe what to expecy when you arrive at the PV airport, you need to see it. I will have a link to it in my shownotes for this episode. Check it out. It will help you understand and prepare for what to expect. Don’s get caught in the Shark Tank…Just Sayin’. Check Out the Video About What to Expect When you Land at the Puerto Vallarta Airport [embed]http://traffic.libsyn.com/puertovallartatravelshow/The_Puerto_Vallarta_Airport.mp4[/embed] Now you listeners are really coming through with your great suggestions, your stories and questions all about Puerto Vallarta and I just want to say thanks! Thank you for reaching out to me with your positive feedback and really thoughtful suggestions. First, a wonderful review popped up in iTunes from Mismaloya Ray, he says…. P.v at its best : by Mismaloya Ray A must listen for all new and seasoned travelers to our beautiful bay. As a Puerto Vallarta fan for the last 30 years, I have learned and enjoyed so much keep up the good work . Can't wait for the new episodes thanks so much . I got this email from Listener Linda who writes… Hi - I've listed to a few of your episodes. Just listened to the one about bus travel. Thanks for doing these. I have a topic idea. It's regarding salaries. I've read that people working at hotels for example make the equivalent of $7 US a day. This doesn't make sense to me. Where do these people shop? I know they might not shop in the tourist areas where prices are high. But how can they afford clothes, food, a pop, a bag of chips? Even a couple of bus rides a day would put a serious dent into their daily wage. I've seen locals shop at Ley's. Do they get a discount? How much would a cashier at Ley's get paid? I'm just trying to make sense of this. I always tip all service staff and assume a lot of people do also, so that would increases salary's but not by much. Just curious. Well Linda, I talked with Eduardo about your question and if you’er listening, and I know you will be, he will give you his best answer to your questions. As I understand it, minimum daily wage in Mexico is like $4.50 a day US. Just sayin’. And I got an email from Ray, Maybe it’s Mismaloya ray who says this First off let me introduce myself, my name is Ray and I'm from Wisconsin. My wife [caption id="attachment_306" align="alignright" width="300"] Puerto Vallarta by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] Cherie and I feel the same way you and many others feel about Puerto Vallarta. It was my wife and I's first trip together when dating back in 2001 and we have been coming back almost every year since. We travel to other locations sometimes, but always make time to return to Puerto Vallarta. Through the years we have met many friends both local and north of the boarder. We enjoy some of our old favorites and always find new places of interest. As time goes on we are lucky to be able to spend more time there, we are up to two weeks. We are very lucky, but always look forward to returning after we get home. Thank you for your shows, I enjoy listening to them. I know you ask for suggestions so I wanted to sit down and type you up a correspondence about some of our favorite places. Some of our favorite places in Puerto Vallarta are: Twisted Palms Lounge Al mixes the best drinks in Puerto Vallarta in our opinion and he is a good friend. Derby Burger If you want to eat like your back in the states. Don't forget to order a shake. Two Taco Stands we frequent often are El Flaco and the one by Archie's Wok. I've been going to that one for years, they remember me when I show up, but realize I've never asked the name. My wife just informed me it's listed as Tacos El Cunado. Last year we hiked with Al from Twisted Palms and his friends from Boca to Los Animas and eat and drank at El Caracol. What a great time. We make it a point to watch the sunset every night, from our condo or one of the many places on the beach. Some of our favorites are [caption id="attachment_305" align="alignright" width="300"] Puerto Vallarta by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] Langostino's, Cuates y Cuetes and the Red Onion. Still catch it at the Sea Monkey a few times a visit. Lastly I enjoy getting out in the morning and walking to Yamir to pick up a pastry for Cherie to go with her coffee. I really enjoy watching people where ever we travel. That time in the morning has people busy getting ready for the day. Thanks again for your work on the show. If you have any future ideas for a show and are looking for listener input let me know. I would like to make other visitors trips better. Take care. Sincerely, Ray and Cherie Thank you Ray, for reaching out and sharing your experiences with me and my listeners. I will have all of Ray’s suggestions in the shownotes for this podcast lucky #13. With that in mind, let’s get to my next guest. This was a fun interview because I love this guy and you will too. His name is Eduardo Solarzano, and Eduardo is an artist, he is a professional photographer. Now, if you have been to my website or if you have seen the album art for The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show you have already seen his work. That’s his photograph and I am so grateful to him for letting me use his photo for my show. Eduardo is my brother from another mother for sure. Such a fun guy and a real mensch. [caption id="attachment_304" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Puerto Vallarta by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] I wanted Eduardo to tell you a little about what he does here in Paradise, and I also wanted to have a chance to ask a local, where do locals go when they want to have a great meal, and where would a local suggest a visitor to Puerto Vallarta go that may be a little bit unusual or a place that naturally, a tourist would not take the time to see and discover. So let’s join Eduardo Solorzano in Puerto Vallarta Mexico and get the scoop from our boots on the ground. Great Breakfast With the Locals Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale Upstairs Fredys Tucan Coco’s Kitchen Calle Pulpito - Eduardo likes the Green Chiliquelles with Beans on the side Lunch Spots Ocho Tostadas El Barracuda for Seafood La Palapa Mezzogiorno Italian Beach Club, Bucerias Dinner Vieta Café de Artistes Archie’s Wok-Asian Bucerias Mark’s Bar and Grill Porto Bello in the Marina Vallarta Taco Stands Tacos Ruli – Near the Stadium across from the Sheraton Hotel. TiTi’s Local flavor His Favorite [caption id="attachment_1326" align="alignnone" width="300"] Tacos Ruly[/caption] Places to go San Sebastian Italian Restaurant Montebello Restaurante Italiano San Pancho La Cruz de Huanacaxtle – Lots of nice places to eat in the Marina but in town Eduardo just loves Columba! So now you all understand why I just love this guy. He is so much fun! By the way, after the interview I got an email from Eduardo who said he forgot to mention one of his very favorite places in PV to eat and that was El Arrayan. Funny he should mention that because I interviewed Carmen Porras, the co owner of El Arrayan in the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta the other day and I plan to have that podcast episode for you soon so stay tuned. Carmen does a couple of cooking classes and we will be joining her like I said, in a couple of weeks. I have added all of the restaurants that Eduardo mentioned to the shownotes for this episode of The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. You can find them at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com. The restaurant that Eduardo spoke so glowingly about, Café de Artistes is an incredible place. Let me try to describe the place to you…. Okay that’s all for now, Thanks for listening all of the way through. Next week stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta and my next show.
