¿Hay motivos para el optimismo? ¡Siempre!

From Student to Maestro: The Journey of Moises Llanes

When classical music plays in a baby's nursery, does it really make a difference? For Moises Llanes, those early moments with Beethoven and Brahms symphonies resonating through his crib shaped a lifelong passion that would transform orchestral education in the Rio Grande Valley. This captivating conversation reveals how a businessman father with an eighth-grade education made a pivotal decision to expose his children to classical music and piano lessons, creating the foundation for Moises's remarkable 37-year teaching career. "I just feel at home listening and playing classical music," Llanes shares, reflecting on those formative experiences that gave him both purpose and direction from an astonishingly young age.Llanes takes us through his journey from student violinist to celebrated educator, highlighting a watershed moment when, as a high school student, he recognized a critical gap in orchestral education - the lack of music literacy. This insight became the cornerstone of his teaching philosophy, creating generations of independent musicians who could truly understand music rather than merely memorize finger positions. "You don't have to figure it out, you just have to read it," became his mantra, empowering students to explore music confidently on their own.The conversation delves into Llanes's collegiate years, cultural identity challenges, and the resilience that carried him through financial hardships when his father's business collapsed. Despite briefly retiring in 2022, his passion for music education drew him back to the classroom at Lorenzo de Zavala Middle School, where he continues making an impact. His parting wisdom for aspiring educators resonates powerfully: "If you're not going to do it 110%, especially teaching, don't do it at all."Subscribe now to hear more inspiring stories from the musical community of the Rio Grande Valley, where passion, perseverance, and cultural heritage create a unique symphony of experiences.

We interview Carmen Llanes, an Austin mayoral candidate, GAVA community organizer, and activist. We ask her about all things transit in Austin including I-35 expansion and Project Connect. #1 Additional (For the non-Austinites): We PROMISE episodes are coming that are NOT focused on Austin. Stay Tuned!#2 Additional (For the Austinites): Due to time constraints, we did not go as in-depth on Project Connect. You can see Carmen's full position here:Carmen: "As I mentioned in our conversation, I think Project Connect in its original planned form is much closer to the vision of transit that Austin deserves than what we have been given the ability to fund and build in the taxation mechanism and reduced plan for implementation as most recently presented. The entire city is paying for Project Connect but the benefits are all slated for the central city, where we don't see a majority of our pressure to commute, and that's an unfortunate pattern in Austin's inequitable approach to financing its infrastructure. Now, without a direct route to the airport or a downtown plan that doesn't make crosstown traffic compete with the rail line, I think there is growing discontent from voters who supported something different from what we are now getting. There are a lot of questions now arising, and with the legal challenges, I fear that the whole plan's funding mechanism is at risk. As far as the impacts, I know too many people who were displaced by the sharp increase in taxes over the last five years, to places with even fewer transit options. Those increases coincided with a massive inflation in Austin's land values and a pandemic that disproportionately devastated communities also impacted by gentrification and economic displacement. Furthermore, most of these areas were already going to have to wait 10-20 years for any rail to come near them, and now those plans seem completely economically unfeasible. That said, all hope is not lost! We still deserve rapid transit and we still have a tax base and a population that widely supports that investment! We'll have to see what happens to the ATP. For now, they are required to invest a lot of this money into light rail which does place some limitations on what we might do with bus-rapid transit or other new infrastructure (autonomous vehicles, etc), but it also allows us, in the near future, to alleviate the need for buses along those specific areas and re-route those buses to crosstown and circulation routes that improve our ridership. If the funding mechanism is stopped in the courts, then we need to refashion this as quickly as possible to re-route the investment in true transit solutions. This cannot and will not be the end of Project Connect.I also believe it's critical that we plan for more equitable prices and rates. Currently, riding the rail costs triple what riding the bus does and we can't go in with inequitable rates. We need to make this transit truly accessible so that it gets used. I think we could already start some free bus fares and routes and marketing of these things to get ridership up. I hear so many long-time Austinites say, "Bring back the Dillos!" which is debated by some, but it's a conversation we need to have! Our future of transit requires more participation and more conversation with those who know our transit system best. I know I'm still on a learning curve. Join HUDDL3 CEO Dane Groeneveld and 'People Problem Solver' Rachel Llanes on The Future of Teamwork as they explore the art of nurturing flourishing teams. In this episode, Rachel, founder of the Gardin Group and a Master Resilience Trainer, shares her unique journey from specializing in Marriage and Therapy counseling to reshaping the dynamics of military and corporate teams. Dive deep into the ABCs of human flourishing—Autonomy, Belonging, and Competence—and learn how these fundamental elements intertwine to create thriving, resilient teams. Whether you're a team leader or a member striving for personal growth, this episode is filled with transformative insights and actionable advice, making it essential listening for anyone committed to excelling in the future of teamwork.Key Takeaways: [00:00] Episode Introduction. Rachel Llanes, a master resilience trainer and founder of The Gardin Group, shares insights on fostering environments where individuals and teams can thrive. [01:59] Dane Groeneveld, CEO of HUDDL3 Group, hosts The Future of Teamwork podcast and is joined by Rachel Llanes, founder of The Gardin Group and a master resilience trainer. They discuss Rachel's work in helping people and teams thrive. [02:47] Rachel's background. In 2022, she started The Gardin Group to teach senior leaders the critical environmental conditions that organizations need for their people to thrive. [07:49] Rachel observed the same problems in different settings, such as family, military, and corporate teams. Despite having a background in Marriage and Family therapy and working as a personal trainer and resilience trainer for the US military, Rachel's experiences led to developing a system for teaching leaders the soft skills needed for their teams to thrive. [09:29] The ABCs of human flourishing begin with "A" for Autonomy. Autonomy is our basic psychological need to feel respected and empowered. Disrespect and disempowerment trigger negative emotions.[10:56] Negative emotions like fear and anger often lead people to shut down or wear a professional mask to conceal their reactions. However, these emotions are signals that indicate something in the environment is off and needs to be corrected. [15:01] It's essential to address issues that affect work performance, team dynamics, and company culture. Appropriately communicating that you've been disrespected can help you advocate for yourself and create a healthier work environment. [18:25] Power differentials can impede transparency in organizations. Leaders should be aware of their authority and consistently seek feedback to create a safe space for open communication. [20:14] Leaders who approach challenges with curiosity and invite others to help create a safe environment for sharing ideas. [25:01] Positive group dynamics, where everyone communicates and works together synergistically, can create an energetic and empowering creative process, whereas negative dynamics can have the opposite effect. [28:07] Belonging is different from fitting in. Belonging means feeling valued, safe, and empowered to be one's true self around others, while fitting in requires changing oneself to conform to the norms of a group. [32:16] To amplify someone's joy when they share good news with you, show genuine interest, and ask them questions that allow them to elaborate on their news. This can be as simple as asking follow-up questions and expressing your happiness for them. [36:01] Rachel shares a personal story about how she unintentionally killed her sister's joy when her sister shared the news of her engagement and pregnancy. Rachel emphasizes the importance of getting it right when people share their joy with us, even if we have concerns about the news. [40:43] The Gardin Group aims to help people understand the distinction between compassion and empathy at work. Empathy is a communication skill that anyone can master with intentional practice. There are five steps to empathy, which include understanding the person's story and reflecting it to them. This skill helps build belonging and connection in challenging situations. [45:09] Rachel discusses a five-step process to support others through emotional pain. The first step is listening, followed by empathy, validation, and understanding. The fifth step involves asking what kind of support the person needs and taking purposeful action to help them. [49:32] Competence is a basic psychological need to feel effective and capable, but it is often thwarted in burnt-out employees. It is the self-evaluation of ability and the relationship between the current challenge, difficulty of the task, and skill level. [54:39] Where to find and contact Rachel Llanes. [56:41] Outro.

Your relationship has a bigger impact on your performance than you think.   You can have all the training and preparation you need to have a great game, meeting, practice, or day, but if your relationship is off…   You can't be ON your best game.   So, how can we enhance and protect our closest relationships so we can excel in what we do?   I lean in to that question and more with relationship and behavior change expert, Rachel Llanes, on today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show.   This is one of the most powerful and practical interviews I've done this year. It's an absolute must listen if you're in a relationship or plan to be in one for the long haul. I wish I would've had this wisdom before I got married!   In this latest episode, Rachel and I talk about…   What's romantic intelligence and its impact on your performance The four steps we must take to resolve relational conflicts effectively and peacefully  Rachel's recommendation for how to be more present in your relationship   …and so much more.   If you want your relationships to add more peace, power, and performance to your life and career, then lock in to today's episode.   [00:01 - 12:16] Introducing Rachel to the show   Rachel's most embarrassing moment Rachel's background, story and professional journey   [12:17 - 18:39] Relationships and their effect on performance   Relationships are at the pinnacle of natural performance enhancers  Dr. Barbara Fredrickson's research: positive emotions (e.g. love, joy, amusement, etc.) have an impact on creativity, innovation, problem-solving, and performance (they have a medicinal impact on the body on a cellular level that allow us to bounce back from stressful events!) When our relationships are solid and sound, we're able to achieve mastery over our craft and think outside the box and grow in ways we never saw before Happy people are successful. Not the other way around. [18:40 - 24:11] What's romantic intelligence and its impact on your performance   Nothing will test you, bring out your brokenness, and expose your flaws like your romantic partner Romantic intelligence requires you to be self-aware and know what you want and expect from your partner. Ask: what do I expect from myself? Then, what do I expect from my partner? Some of us have unrealistic, untamed expectations because we grew up watching Disney movies Regarding love languages - Rachel's example: Her love language = words of affirmation; husband's love language = physical touch. If she uses words of affirmation to love her husband, she's putting the wrong fuel in his love tank. Romantic intelligence is understanding that, in part, we give the love we crave (which, in a way, is very ego-driven). Whenever Rachel defaults to loving her husband with HER love language, it's a trigger for her to communicate with his. She encourages us to do the same. Romantic intelligence is about understanding the love you crave the most, understanding the love your partner craves the most, putting the right fuel in THEIR love tank, and coaching them on how to put the right fuel in YOUR love tank   [24:12 - 25:42] The 3 “I's” of Intimacy (from Rachel's book, Lucky in Love)   Romantically intelligent people are very clear in their communication of what they want, need, and feel… I want I need I feel  A mastery of self is required to master a marriage   [25:43 - 40:47] Four steps we must take to resolve relational conflicts effectively and peacefully   If you fight right, you strengthen your relationship Rachel's H.E.A.L. Model for conflict resolution H - do your HOMEWORK (i.e. prepare yourself and the facts for the conversation) Facts (specific, measurable, and observable) are the most persuasive and the least offensive - if you anchor your argument to facts, you don't need to use force This is where our blindspots are (“our blindspots live in our beliefs”)...it challenges our brain to collect the FACTS E - EXPRESS the FACTS and your FEELINGS about them Regarding getting defensive - the moment your emotions escalate is the moment the issue gets put on the backburner (and you deal with the relationship) Your issue is Priority #2. Your relationship is Priority #1. A - ASK your partner for their perspective, and then ASK for a reasonable change L - LIFT the positive outcomes you anticipate will happen if they agree to what you ask for in the ASK step above. This plugs into your partner's intrinsic motivation (and more likely will put the issue to bed for good)   [40:48 - 47:40] Rachel's recommendation for how to be more present in your relationship   Every couple needs to find their own system for communicating things Leverage a focal point (e.g. Rachel's = picture of family in office) Develop a discipline of doing LESS (e.g. Rachel - when she's driving, she's just driving…not listening to music, podcasts, etc.). Tip: Ask, “Am I uni-tasking?”   [47:41 - 52:34] Wrapping Up Rachel's BIG domino How to connect with Rachel   KEY QUOTES “Relationships are at the pinnacle of natural performance enhancers.” - Rachel Llanes “Happy people are successful. Not the other way around.” - Rachel Llanes  “Stop putting the wrong fuel in your partner's love tank.” - Rachel Llanes “A mastery of self is required to master a marriage.” - Rachel Llanes “If you anchor your argument to facts, you don't need to use force.” - Rachel Llanes “Our blindspots live in our beliefs.” - Rachel Llanes “Motivation is the soil that discipline grows out of.” - Rachel Llanes   CONNECT WITH RACHEL Linkedin: /in/rllanes/ Website: https://thegardingroup.com Email: rachel@thegardingroup.com   CONNECT WITH J.R.  Facebook: @jamesJRreid Instagram: @jamesjrreid LinkedIn: in/jamesjrreid/ Twitter: @jamesJRreid Website: jamesreid.com For Men Only - Check out The Clutch Club™️: jamesreid.com/club   RATE & REVIEW this episode on Apple: https://jamesreid.com/review   SHARE this episode with someone who wants to be challenged, pushed, and positioned to come up clutch more often.   SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss out on any new episodes and Special Guests!   LISTEN to previous episodes on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Google or whatever podcast platform you prefer!
