Although coming into the story confused because of the blurb, Ines and Leslye dissect this dual love story, of sorts in Resonance Surge. The main love story revolves around a Changeling bear with foresight and a wounded Psy with a past filled with childhood trauma. Woven with real life stories of Psy siblings before silence, as well as tales from the present day consequences of Silence falling, this addition to Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series packs an emotional punch. Maybe a yearly tradition? Where we recommend books to each other. Chels recommended the first in the Psy-Changeling series to Beth because of their shared love of Heather Guerre. Emma recommended a Carla Kelly because she's quickly becoming a pod favorite. Keeping with last episode, Beth recommended two contemporaries. Emma and Chels did like an uno reverse to each other and recommended two kind of heavy-hitter political histroms. This week I return to the show with an update on life and my thoughts on Nalini's latest Psy Changeling book Storm Echo! Spoilers start at 21:28 and end at 1:10:40
A long-time friend of the SPA Girls Nalini Singh is here to talk about world-building, and if anyone knows how to do this–it's Nalini! New York Times and internationally bestselling author of the Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter series of paranormal romances, Nalini also writes New Zealand-set thrillers, the most recently released of which is Quiet in Her Bones. Her contemporary romances include the Rock Kiss and Hard Play series, the latter of which revolves around a rugby-loving family in Auckland. 33 of Nalini's solo titles have hit the New York Times Bestseller list (most recently Archangel's Light, in November 2021). Her books have also hit the USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Wall Street Journal Bestseller lists. She's received the Australian Romance Readers Award several times and won two Sir Julius Vogel awards. The first book in the Psy-Changeling series, Slave to Sensation, was named as one of the New York Public Library's 125 books from the last 125 years that inspire a lifelong love of reading. Born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand, Nalini was first published in 2003. Her books are both traditionally and indie published and have sold over eight million copies worldwide with translations in multiple languages. Phew! Makes your head spin, right? We're back to paranormal romance this week — and so excited! It's been literal years since we've done a deep dive like this one, talking about a beloved, long-standing, many booked, series — Nalini Singh's Psy Changeling series. We're deep diving on Caressed by Ice, which features a hero who literally experiences physical pain whenever he feels a feeling, so…of course he's Jen's favorite. We talk paranormal world building, patriarchy, hero's feeling feelings, and try to explain the universe of this book. We're not great at it, but there is about 20 minutes of bantr, so you'll be fine! There's still time to buy the Fated Mates Best of 2021 Book Pack from our friends at Old Town Books in Alexandria, VA, and get eight of the books on the list, a Fated Mates sticker and other swag! We are going to set some wild intentions for 2022 with our first read-along of the year, Lisa Valdez's Passion, an erotic historical published in 2005 that is W-I-L-D. There is a lot of biblical stuff at the world's fair. Also some truly bananas stuff that…sticks with you. We haven't read it in a while, so we're telling you to be careful because…honestly, it's just good sense with this one. Get it at Amazon, Apple, Kobo, or B&N.Show NotesCaressed by Ice is the third book in the Psy/Changling series by Nalini Singh. The Trailblazer series continues this week with Elda Minger—author of contemporary and historical romances, including Untamed Heart, which is the first contemporary romance to feature condom use on the page. Elda talks about writing for Vivian Stephens, about writing about women's bodies, about reproductive choice and about the way romance made space for women during the 70s and 80s. She shares a collection of gorgeous stories about her life as a reader and writer (and a particularly wonderful detour as a bookseller). About the boom of category and contemporary romance in the 1980s, and about the way writing made her who she is. We are thrilled to have found Elda, and that she took time to speak with us and share her wonderful perspective on the genre with us. We can't think of a better week to share this episode with you. We're joined this week by author Piper Rayne, who is two authors! Elizabeth Grace (Piper) and Michelle Lynn (Rayne) have written dozens of wildly tropey, wonderfully romantic contemporary romances together. It's autumn which means it's time to start talking holiday seasons and holiday romances here at Fated Mates, so this week, we're talking about one of Jen's favorite category trilogies—Tiffany Reisz's Men At Work series from Harlequin Blaze. So, Abigail made some choices — good, bad, and snarly. Was pounding all of the original Psy-Changeling books and novellas in 30 days a good idea? No. Is it good content? DEBATABLE. Perhaps you’ve noticed that we won’t shut up about romance novels? Well, this week we’re chatting it up with Talia Hibbert, one of our favorite writers of the genre, about telling diverse stories, shaping conversations about consent, and writing good sex. But first: Does Erica have too many coffee devices? You be the judge. The coffeemakers in Erica’s rotation: Bodum French press, Nespresso Pixie (with Woken pods—but Nespresso ones are recyclable in NYC now. See also from the NYT on recycling legislation!), Gemini Espresso Maker (or a single-serving alt from GSI), and Copper Cow Coffee pour-overs. DM, email, or call us!! At @athingortwohq, podcast@athingortwohq.com, and 833-632-5463. We’re all about Talia Hibbert’s Brown Sisters trilogy: Get a Life, Chloe Brown (her first traditionally published book), Take a Hint, Dani Brown, and Act Your Age, Eve Brown. Here for more, more, more of her writing. To dive into the conversation around the lack of representation in the romance-novel world: this NYT article, this initiative and reporting from The Ripped Bodice, and a big blow-up re: Romance Writers of America (who were accused of racism) last year. Other romance recs from Talia: Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series, Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers, the upcoming Kennedy Ryan release Reel, the work of KJ Charles, A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley and its next installment, and The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri. Holy cats this book is fantastic! Nalini Singh creates a dramatic world in her Psy-Changeling series that starts with this book. This book details the world of the Psy - a race of creatures that have removed emotion from their population for the last hundred years in order to cure the insanity that was causing murder and suicide rates among their numbers. Our heroine, Sascha, is a Psy of the highest strength, a cardinal. Her power has never manifested in any of the typical power lines acceptable for her race. Lucas Hunter, the hero, is a black panther shifter, alpha of the leopard clan DarkRiver. He is working on a construction project with the Psy as an undercover operation to infiltrate them in order to find out what they are hiding. A Psy has been killing changelings and he will find out who. This is a fated mates story. This is an investigation story. This is an urban fantasy/paranormal story. Wowzers! This has world building that will take you away from daily life and a high paced action that will keep you reading late at night. What an incredible hero and heroine! It's got it all PLUS it's got sexual tension that is written so well you will want to read everything Singh has ever written immediately. This book may get an elusive perfect 10!Heidi breaks it all down for you in the podcast and then gives you her ratings.Part I - A spoiler free review of the book to help you discover if you want to read the book.Heidi gives each book a Steaminess Rating using the PG, PG13, and Rated R system.Heidi also ranks each book using her own ranking system.Heidi uses a 1-10 system with 10 as the best. Each of the following categories can get a point: characters, romance, plot, climax, pacing, dialogue, world building, mechanics, overall impression, and authorial voice. She did give one book a 0.Part II - There are mild spoilers about the book as Heidi does a deep dive to explore what she liked or didn't like and give you the details on why. Usually this is also where we discuss the sex. There is a brief music interlude to break up the podcast to let the listener know that going forward to the end of the podcast there are mild spoilers about the book.Listen to the first half of the podcast to find out if you want to read the book... then listen to the full review when you have finished the book to see if your review aligns with Heidi's!Join us at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/637531733526838/Follow me on instagram at: @romancebookreviewpodcastSupport the show (https://paypal.me/romancebookreviewpod)

In part one of Julia Quinn’s To Sir Phillip with Love, we examine what makes this book different from the previous four. Taylor and Lydia dive into introspective characters and their random thoughts, the epic Bridgerton bros scene, and parallels with earlier books. Tay goes into unnecessary tangents about the British Museum, we talk setting and trauma, and Eloise and Phillip discover that meeting someone IRL for the first time is “80% stutter, 20% gold.”CW: suicide, depression, childhood abuseComing up: Part 2 continues the conversation about portrayals of mental illness in historical and romance novels and Philip’s struggles to be a good father. Ya know, lighthearted stuff. Tune in next week to hear Lydia’s two scenarios for a modern Phillip and Eloise and Tay’s reading recommendations! What we’re reading:Vanessa Riley, A Duke, the Lady, and a BabyOlivia Waite, The Care and Feeding of Waspish WidowsNalini Singh, the Psy-Changeling series Talia Hibbert, Get a Life, Chloe BrownThanks for listening! Gail Carriger and Piper J. Drake share books that give them a strong sense of place. * new episode! What do Gail and Piper think of as a book that gives them a sense of place? Gail thought of books that make her want to travel somewhere and particularly thinks of the light of a place. Piper thought of not only books that made her want to travel to a place, but also books that created the perfect scene that pulled her into the book. Gail and Piper discuss the writing craft aspect of how they think of books and a sense of place, what senses come into play, and how to research for setting. They also discuss ways to research a place when you can't actually go there. Book Shout Outs! Gail recommended: Lord of Two Lands by Judith Tarr The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper *Gail particularly referenced The Grey King, the book in this series that was set in Wales. My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell Piper recommended: Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh *Piper struggled to remember the first short story that introduced her to this series. The title was “Stroke of Enticement” and was originally in The Magical Christmas Cat anthology. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs Gadgets! Piper currently reads with a mini iPad because it's closer to the size and weight of a paperback. Gail reads on a Kindle Oasis because it is e-Ink. Special thanks to Kelly for editing this episode! Joining me for this episode via online chat is the lovely speculative fiction author Samantha Marshall! Samantha has written three books across two series, Aislinn's Shadow and Tobias' Spark in The Kin Chronicles and Sorcery and Stardust is the first in The Weaver's War series. If you love action packed, shape-shifting, strong characters in an Australian (and space in The Weaver's War) setting then do yourself a favour and check out Samantha's books! Samantha chatted with me about writing believable characters, our mutual love of hard SF and also chose two of her favourite books to pair with delicious elixirs! The pairings: Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh (#13 in the Psy-Changeling series) Vasic is an assassin and a soldier. His soul is drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he's done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life. Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Vasic. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she'll fight for her people, and for Vasic who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy's fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness… Samantha says this is a meaty plot, layered, with a lovely romantic storyline, a good comfort read which would go well with a hot chocolate with a dash of caramel syrup and a chocolate mud cake as it is warm and snuggly. The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (Discworld #24) They say that diplomacy is a gentle art. That its finest practitioners are subtle, sophisticated individuals for whom nuance and subtext are meat and drink. And that mastering it is a lifetime's work. But you do need a certain inclination in that direction. It's not something you can just pick up on the job. Sam Vimes is a man on the run. Yesterday he was a Duke, a Chief of Police and the Ambassador to the mysterious, fat-rich county of Uberwald. Now he has nothing but his native wit and the gloomy trousers of Uncle Vanya (don't ask). It's snowing. It's freezing. And if he can't make it through the forest to civilisation there's going to be a terrible war. But there are monsters on his trail. They're bright. They're fast. They're werewolves - and they're catching up. Samantha would pair this fun, dry, layered and salty read with a sweet moscato and antipasto platter to cut through the bitey-ness!
Hi! It’s episode 15 with Tangle of Need, book 11 in the Psy-Changeling series. I talk about this book, Adria Morgan who makes it so good, the crappy “Unlikeable Heroine” rag and how much I don’t like it. For this episode I talk about book 9 Play of Passion! It’s got two wolf changelings, younger man/older woman trope (kinda!) and Andrew Kincaid is a delightful main character. Reading has been tough but I’ve started re-reading Devil’s Bride by Stephanie Laurens because the Fated Mates podcast had an episode about it. The novellas I mentioned that are set in the Psy/Changeling world are: Beat of Temptation - Tasmyn and Nathan from DarkRiver; Declaration of Courtship - Grace is a submissive being courted by a very dominant wolf - both can be found in Wild Invitation. In Wild Embrace you can find Partners in Persuasion which has Felix a submissive wolf tangling with Dezi, a dominant leopard soldier. Please share your thoughts on Twitter @molessie and Instagram @essiemv
This episode I talk about book 8 in the Psy-Changeling universe with Max and Sophia who are a new pairing! I also talk about House Rules and Love Lettering — authors Ruby Lang and Kate Clayborn are so talented and you need both of these books in your lives.
