Many life changes need to be grieved, from the loss of a loved one to the loss of a job, from a breakup to a relocation, and all the rest of life's ebbs and flows. In What's Your Grief?, Mental Health Professionals Eleanor Haley and Litsa Williams shares insights into the complex but universal experience of grief. Discover little know truths about grief, what to do when you are experiencing guilt grief, practical tips on change and loss. Mental Health Professionals Eleanor Haley and Litsa Williams are the creators of a Grief Site www.whatsyourgrief.com and community and they have both experienced significant losses themselves. They know that individual grief is unique and there is no "right" way to cope.  The What's Your Grief? Book has Lists to Help You Through Any Loss. However, they can use everything they have learnt after a decade of writing about grief, in their down to earth approach, to help grieving people better understand their experiences and find ways to cope with the day-to-day struggle of living with grief. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused not only economic, environmental and health impacts on the world; but emotional impacts as well.In this episode of Teal Talk originally recorded in April 2020, Litsa Williams and Eleanor Haley from What's Your Grief discussed the different ways people grieved the worldwide shutdown, and provided evergreen practices for how to cope. We were also joined by then Head of People Operations TQ Evans. Since this recording, TQ passed away after a long battle with colon cancer in April 2021. Her light shines bright in this episode as she relayed how her family and her coped with the problems of the world -- and her spirit shines through Mediavine as we cope with her loss, and continue to honor her memory. It is Thursday, April 23. It is approximately day 473 of quarantine, for those keeping track. This is Teal Talk, and I'm your host Jenny Guy. I'm the director of marketing at Mediavine, and, more importantly, I have finally fulfilled my childhood dream in this quarantine and become a carbohydrate. And that's when I'm not getting really emotional over all the new COVID-19 quarantine commercials, so that's fun. So welcome. Say hi to us in the comments if you're hanging out. [MOWER STARTS] Oh, and good, the lawn service is starting, so that's perfect. And we said not to come today, so good good good. Tell us how you're holding up at this point because it is not an easy time right now. I also wanted to-- I told all these awesome ladies before, I am wearing a dress on the top, and then I am wearing lizard pajama bottoms on the bottom. So I am the definition of a mullet, I am business on the top, party on the bottom. So now that we've gotten all of that out of the way, we have people working from home and teaching their kids for the first time. We're cooking all of our own meals and producing more dirty dishes-- than, I mean, I never even thought-- it's unbelievable how many dishes there are. It's insane. And we're reconfiguring milestone celebrations, and missing family, and worrying about the state of our wallets and the world, and in light of all these bizarre firsts and struggles, we brought on some experts to help with work-from-home wellness and mental wellness in general. And I'm so glad they're here, I'm going to introduce them. First, I'm with Mediavine's Director of People Operations, TQ Evans. TQ joins us live from her home in Richmond, Virginia. She has been the director of People Operations with Mediavine for nearly two years. She's got a master's degree, along with several other professional certifications in HR management and leadership, and that means a lot of initials behind her name. Her background specialty entails partnering with small to mid-sized startups and successfully building and teaching their people-ops team from the ground up. She also is a birth doula, a wife, a mom of four human kids, and a new mom to three backyard hens, fondly named Aretha, Gladys, and Patti. She is an avid urban gardener, has a passion for health and wellness, and, most recently, is the recipient of the unofficial Neighborhood Quarantine double-Dutch Award. What is that? Hi TQ, welcome. TQ EVANS: Hi Jenny. I look forward to getting into that-- oh, do you want me to tell you now? JENNY GUY: Yeah please, what is that? TQ EVANS: Oh yeah. So I started just doing different activities with my neighbors, like virtual activities. And we're taking it back to-- we're all 80s babies, and we did jump rope, double-Dutch. So my neighbors and I started-- we bought hula hoops and all these things,

On today’s episode with Litsa Williams, who is the program director and co-founder of the platform or website called What’s Your Grief, we talk alot about what Litsa calls nonfinite loss —which is a grief that persists and changes as aspects of life continually fall short of expectations. In other words, we talked about how we can begin to create the space in our hearts and our lives to grieve the unmet expectations or unfulfilled dreams that we all have inevitably experienced over the course of our lives.I honestly don’ know if there has been a more timely podcast than this episode, especially given everything that we have experienced individually and collectively over the last year. We’ve all experienced so much loss over the last year and Litsa does such a great job at walking us down a path of healing throughout this episode. And just so you have a little more information about What’s Your Grief, their mission is to promote grief education, exploration, and expression in both practical and creative ways. The achieve this mission by providing: Resources related to understanding and coping with grief and loss Guidance on how to help a grieving friend or family member Online courses about grief and supporting someone who’s grieving Resources, education, and training for grief counselors, grief volunteers, and other professionals working in fields related to grief and loss. TRANSCRIPT: Good morning, Five Minute Families. It is so good to be with you on this unseasonably warm day. We will soon be closing Clear View Retreat down for the winter, but we certainly hope that all the projects our volunteers have been diligently focusing on this year will allow this to be our last year to have to close during the cold winter months. So many pastors, missionaries, and grieving families reach out to us during these months, and we are continually praying and working toward being able to be open during their times of need. That's where you come in. Please consider partnering with us because we bring the hope of Christ into families that need Him now more than ever. Check out us at clearviewretreat.org if you feel led to share your time or gifts to help families in both the storms and norms of life. One of those storms we all go through at some point in our lives is the death of a loved one. We are going to continue our series on grief today by discussing regrets after your loved one has died. How do we deal with the death of someone we love when the regrets seep in? First, let us clarify that we are not discussing guilt after the death of a loved one. What's the difference between guilt and regret, you ask? Litsa Williams at WhatsYourGrief.com stated it this way, “…guilt occurs when we do something that we know is wrong while we are doing it, typically for ethical, moral, or legal reasons. Regret, on the other hand, is the emotion we experience when we look back on an action and feel we should or could have done something differently. It differs from guilt in that we didn't know or feel at the time that we were doing something wrong, or we didn't actually have control over the situation. Also, [regret] typically is not that we did something that falls in that morally or legally wrong category, but rather a benign action (or inaction) that we later wish was done differently based on an outcome.” For example, after my cousin died unexpectedly, I regretted not ever fulfilling her request that I take an extra few hours to come see her new home and spend some time with her family and mine together. It was not a morally wrong choice not to add many hours of travel to my already weary schedule with my young children in tow, but she was inviting me into her life beyond our childhood memories, and I missed an opportunity to know her better before her death. I regret that choice. We are often told to live life without regrets, but even God says in both Genesis 6:6 and 1 Samuel 15:35 that He regretted actions He took. Now, before you jump up and say, “Hey, God doesn't make mistakes!” realize that we did not say He made a mistake, we said HIS word says He REGRETTED making man and then making Saul king, respectively. As John Piper stated, “God is quite capable of lamenting a state of affairs He Himself foreknew and brought about.” So, while the world tells us to live without regrets, we hear from God that we are to learn from those regrets. 2 Corinthians 7:10 tells us, “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” If we simply dwell in our regret and do not take those thoughts captive, we can become self-focused or lead ourselves into guilt-producing behavior. Five actions you can take if you have regret after the death of a loved one are: Acknowledge your regret. Ways to do that include journaling or speaking with a trusted pastor, mentor, or counselor. Repent of your regret to the Lord. Pray, even out loud or in writing, to the Lord and ask Him for His guidance. Determine actions you may need to take, such as a behavior you need to change in your ongoing relationships. Forgive yourself, especially since you cannot seek the forgiveness of the one you love. Look to the hope of the future. Remember that God says in Isaiah 43:19, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the...

I had such a great discussion with Litsa Williams for this episode. Litsa is the co-founder of the popular grief blog and website What's Your Grief, and I had the pleasure of meeting her this summer at the National Alliance for Grieving Children symposium. What's Your grief has so many articles on every different topic related to grief and loss, and they also have a number of really innovative projects going on that might be interesting to think about trying with your kids or teens. Some topics that Litsa and I cover include: Resources available on the What's Your Grief blog and web site; Recommendations for books and movies to read and watch with your kids; The Grief Secret project; The Grief in Six Words project; The Photo Grief project, and the online grief photography class they offer; The What's Your Grief podcast; and Litsa's advice and perspective as both a grief professional and as someone who lost her own dad when she was just 18. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Litsa Williams.

In this episode, Litsa Williams and Gordon discuss helping people with an issue that affects all of us at one point or another in our life, grief. Litsa and her partner, Eleanor Haley, have created an endless supply of resources for people who are in the grieving process. Plus, they have resources for professionals who help others that require grief support. Later, they discuss creative coping and the idea that re-grieving is entirely normal. Meet Litsa Williams I have taken a winding road, from England and a Master's in Philosophy, to Baltimore and a Master's in Social Work, to working with homeless adults, troubled kids, and grieving families. It is those individuals who have taught more than I could ever have hoped to learn in my 20 years of schooling. Though I never imagined myself here I am confident it is where I am supposed to be. I live in Charm City, with my husband and my rescue pit bull. And I believe that 5 minute late is absolutely on time. Grief Support Grief is a natural part of life. It's an adjustment people are going to have to cope with at some point. About 85% of people can cope with grief without getting formal grief counseling as long as they receive normalization, validation, and social support. Unfortunately, when we look at this space where people do not need extra support, where does it come naturally? Litsa and Eleanor asked if there was something that they could create in the online space that would offer so many new ways to share information and build community. Creative Coping Both Litsa and her partner, Eleanor Haley, used photography as a real tool for self-expression and coping with their grief. They started talking about this and wanted to find other people who would be interested in it. As soon as they started talking about it, people were immediately online and wanted to know more about how to connect photography with grief. They ended up creating webinars, online courses, blog posts, and podcast episodes. People are excited about getting this information in a convenient format. Print Materials Litsa and Eleanor also create print materials for funeral directors, hospitals, grief centers, and hospices. They were often given brochures and booklets to hand out to patients during grieving times. The leaflets were outdated because they have not been updated for 30 years. Litsa loves seeing how her new materials are used as the first step to the introduction of grief for so many people. What's Your Grief Blog At this point, Litsa and Eleanor have nearly 600 articles. They try and cast an extensive net and still publish every week. There has long been a disconnect between academia and the regular people out there for grieving materials. Sometimes the resources for people struggling are underestimated; their blog translates their knowledge into understandable terms for everyone. Plus, they cover topics like talking to kids about suicide, miscarriage loss, and creative expression. Also, they offer hands-on ideas for professionals to help their grieving groups. Re-grief We re-grieve experiences, and that is a normal part of life. For kids, this is especially important because they re-grieve at every developmental stage. When kids get older, they revisit those losses through new lenses they now have. We as adults do that as well. When we hit life milestones, we suddenly re-grieve losses even if it happened thirty years ago. It doesn't mean we did not grieve right; it just means it is part of our journey. When we see things in the media, we will feel empathy for other humans, and our losses will wrap into those thoughts as well.
