Depression can show up in families in subtle ways, sometimes with small changes in behavior that slowly start to create concerns. One of the most common questions that I get is, “how can I get a loved one to see a doctor/therapist?” In the most recent episode of the pod, I speak with Dr. Valerie Cordero, Co-Executive Director at Families for Depression Awareness and a prominent voice for suicide prevention, mental health parity, and health equity. We discuss the issue of mental health concerns within families. Check out Families for Depression Awareness at https://www.familyaware.org/ for online resources for how to help your family members. If you or someone that you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call 911 or 988 for help in the US or activate the emergency services in your area.

Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast EP.208 - The Balanced Brain w/Dr Camilla Nord, Neuroscientist & Author A powerful reframing of mental health, grounded in cutting-edge neuroscientific research There are many routes to mental wellbeing and award-winning neuroscientist Camilla Nord is at the forefront of finding them. Dr Camilla Nord, leads the Mental Health Neuroscience Lab at the University of Cambridge, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, and she has a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Psychiatry. Her lab investigates brain-body interactions in neuropsychiatric disorders using methods from cognitive and computational neuroscience. The Balanced Brain by Camilla Nord offers a revelatory tour of the scientific and technological developments that are revolutionizing the way we think about mental health, showing why and how events - and treatments - can affect people in such different ways. In The Balanced Brain Nord reframes mental health as an intricate, self-regulating process, one which is different from all of us. She examines a huge diversity of treatments, from therapy to medication, to show how they work, and why they sometimes don't. In doing so, she reveals how the small things we do to lift our mood during the course of a day - a piece of chocolate, chatting to a friend - often work on the same pathways in our brain as the latest pharmacological treatments for mental health disorders. Whether they help us to manage pain, learn from experience or expend energy on the things that are important for survival, these conscious actions are part of a complex self-regulating process that is unique to each individual and the constant backdrop to our everyday lives. Nord shows that, with so many factors at play there are more possibilities for recovery and resilience than we might think. The Balanced Brain is an invitation to discover pathways that make each of us feel better and to understand why. Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Camilla Nord Author of The Balanced Brain to find out The Science of Mental Health. In Podcast Episode - EP.208 Camilla Nord shares: - a little bit about herself - insights into her book - The Balanced Brain - why is laughter good for us - is craving Chocolate bad for us - why did we experience depression during lockdown - why is Drive important when it comes to Mental Health - her own self-care rituals Plus we talk about so much more........ We are encouraged to "do the work" to manage our mental health. We're told to #beheretomorrow. And those are powerful messages! But how often do they include the reminder that we deserve to recover, heal and live for ourselves and not just for others? That distinction is discussed in this 24-minute episode with our guest, Ari Cohen. Families for Depression Awareness site: https://www.familyaware.org/

Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast EP.197 - The Self-Talk Workout with Dr. Rachel GoldSmith Turow, PhD, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Mindfulness Teacher, Author Self-talk matters, but what methods of building healthy self-talk actually work? In The Self-Talk Workout, Dr Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD, Psychologist and Mindfulness Teacher, shares evidence-based techniques to go from being your own worst critic to your own best friend. Perhaps you want to be nicer to yourself but don't really know how to get there. Or maybe you're someone who assumes self-criticism is a permanent part of your personality. Rest assured you're not alone-millions of people struggle with the toll that excessive self-criticism takes on their mind, energy levels, jobs, and relationships. Problems with self-talk vary dramatically from one person to the next: they can appear as mild but persistent inner criticism, full-blown self-loathing, or the pain of internalised oppression or abuse. After over twenty years of working with individuals, groups, and classes on self-criticism and related challenges, psychologist and mindfulness teacher Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD offers "the self-talk workout" and doable exercises that can help you replace self-criticism with self-kindness and self-encouragement. Specific self-talk strategies such as "Spot the success", and "Allowing all feelings, skilfully," require just a few minutes a day. These skills can be practiced individually to transform your self-talk, or you can choose to combine two or more exercises to enhance your self-talk workout. In The Self-Talk Workout, Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD also shares examples from her own life and experiences as a psychotherapist. Rachel Turow was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in the Bay Area. After completing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Oregon, a clinical internship at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Have you ever felt uncomfortable or not "at home" in your body? TRIGGER WARNING: Eating Disorders and Body Image is discussed in this podcast episode some people may find this triggering, if this causes any distress please contact Butterfly Foundation National Helpline for Free and Confidential Support on 1800 33 4673 available from 8am to Midnight 7 days a week (AEST) or in a crisis please contact your nearest hospital, emergency services, doctor or mental health professional. In Reclaiming Body Trust co-authors and the founders of Center for Body Trust, licensed therapist Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and registered dietician Dana Sturtevant, MS, RS invite listeners to break free from the status quo and reject a diet culture that has taken advantage and profited from trauma, stigma, and disembodiment, and fully reclaim and embrace our bodies. Informed by the personal body stories of the hundreds of people they have worked with, Reclaiming Body Trustdelineates an intersectional, social justice-orientated path to healing in three phases: The Rupture, The Reckoning, and The Reclamations. In Reclaiming Body Trust, Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, LPC shares insights into their innovative and revolutionary Body Trust framework so we can discover a more authentic and sustainable way to occupy and nurture our bodies. Before Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD envisioned the Center for Body Trust, they worked independently as a therapist and dietitian. As professionals in the fields of nutrition and mental health, they found most of the recommendations made to clients regarding weight were not only unsustainable but often resulted in harm to their well-being and sense of self. They were both disillusioned with the status quo approach to food, body, weight and health, which has been harmful for too long. In 2005, both Hilary and Dana joined forces to re-envision what it meant to occupy and care for your body - and the Center for Body Trust was born. Dana Sturtevant co-founder of Center for Body Trust is a nutrition therapist, educator, speaker, writer and activist, who advocates for food and body sovereignty. For More than 15 years, Dana has helped people let go of chronic patterns of dieting and disordered eating and move into a more authentic, sustainable way to occupy and nurture their bodies. Hilary Kinavey co-founder of Center for Body Trust is a licensed professional counselor, facilitator, educator, and coach. For more than 20 years Hilary has worked with people to reckon with the vicious cycles of disordered eating and dieting, body shame and weight bias, and the fragmentation, oppression and trauma that often sits at the center. Today they work to examine the toxic structure in which our construct of health lies, and discover what is possible when people are trusted with their bodies. Body Trust is scientifically grounded and greatly informed by social justice movements, liberators frameworks, and embodiment theory. Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast EP.192 - Humble, Free Yourself from the Traps of a Narcissistic World w/Daryl Van Tongeren, PhD, Social Psychologist, Professor of Psychology, Leading Researcher, Author Humble takes up-to-date cutting-edge scientific research and demonstrates how this undervalued trait has the power to change the way we live, think and act. Humility has long been extolled as an ancient virtue. However, recent scientific research has revealed what our Ancestors already knew - that humility has the transformative power to change people's lives, their relationships, their work and society itself. Humility stands in stark contrast with the current state of things, offering us a way to engage ourselves and others with honesty, curiosity and open-mindedness, providing us the ability to present our ideas and views modestly, share praise and blame, and consider the needs of others. Humble by Daryl Van Tongeren, PhD is the first book to look at what humility is, why it's important and how to nurture it for personal and societal change in order to build tolerance and bridge divides. In Humble, Daryl Van Tongeren, PhD, a leading researcher into the science of humility, gives this unassuming trait a much-needed rebrand, explaining why the humble enjoy a more secure sense of self, handle challenges better and, indeed, are often the people we like the most. In its truest sense, humbleness is the happy medium between self-denial and self-obsession: it grants the holder an accurate view of reality. By seeing where we have room to improve, we can grow. By admitting our doubts, we can learn. And by acknowledging our own worldview as one among many, we can truly connect with others despite our differences. Humility is understated undervalued and very much underused, but understood and carried out effectively, it can be the most powerful and influential trait we have at our fingertips. EP.185 - Body Aware with Erica Hornthal, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Board-Certified Dance and Movement Therapist, Author Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast Erica Hornthal, know as "The Therapist Who Moves You" is a board-certified dance/movement therapist and licensed clinical professional counselor. She is the founder and CEO of Chicago Dance Therapy and creator of the Dance Therapy Advocates Summit. As a licensed talk therapist, Erica knows that words only get us so far. Whereas, if we're willing to tap into its power, the body can take us the rest of the way as we process emotions and strengthen our mental health. Erica is spearheading this movement by moving you. Dance/Movement Therapy comes in, by providing the structure and space for people to truly listen to their bodies. This practice isn't about being a perfect dancer and it's not just a way to let loose and have fun. It's learning that movement is life, our movements influence our thoughts, which influence our behaviour, which makes us who we are. Erica Hornthal is the Author of Body Aware, a step-by-step journey how a mindful movement practice can slow down thoughts to lessen anxiety and panic and impact how and what we feel. When we talk about movement, most of us think "exercise". But the way we move our bodies, how we walk, roll, dance, stretch, stretch, connect, and take up space - is about so much more than physical fitness. Our movements impact our mental and emotional health and when we change the way we move, we can change the way we live. Body Aware helps readers to learn and identify where they physically hold their emotions, understand and interpret their body's unique language, explore bodily sensations, identify emotional blockages and upgrade harmful thought cycles to patterns that instead foster resilience, emotional regulation, and productivity. With a chapter on disability and movement diversity, Hornthal's guide begins to move dance therapy to a move inclusive, non-prescriptive space, helping each of us discover the kind of movement that works best for us. Broken into three sections: "How You Move," "How Movement is a Catalyst for Change," and "Transforming Your Life Through Movement," Body Aware is a revelatory transformational practice and an easy-to-use introduction to the mind-body power of intentional movement. Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Erica Hornthal Author of Body Aware to find out How we can Rediscover our Mind Body Connection and Improve our Mental Health with Simple Movement Practices. In Podcast Episode - EP.185 Erica Hornthal shares: - a little bit about herself - insights into her book - Body Aware - how to rediscover your Mind-Body Connection - what dance therapy is and how it can help us discover the kind of movement that works best for us - simple tips to improve your mental health - simple movement practices to stop you feeling stuck - how movement is so much more than physical fitness - learning to identify where we physically hold emotions - exploring bodily sensations in a safe way - why she included a chapter on disability and movement diversity - how the Body Aware foreword by Nicole Lepera, PhD came to fruition - her own self-care rituals Plus we talk about so much more........ Children to bullying others are not feeling good about themselves, maybe sarcastic, have passive/aggressive behaviors. They usually pick on kids who have traits that they feel they are lacking and may be jealous of that child. Its okay for parents to check into their kids phones, computers, backpacks, etc., just to make sure things are okay. Whether being the bully or being bullied, most times the child doesn't feel able to talk with their teachers about the problem; so parents need to be watchful for both issues.

When we talk about being comfortable, very rarely does depression come to mind. That sounds dark, and lonely, and scary - who would be comfortable in that? But did you know that when it's the only thing you've ever really known, that anything outside of that - especially joy IS uncomfortable. Those who have lived their lives battling depression understand what it means to be comfortably depressed. In this episode Jay sits down with Eric White. Eric is the host of another mental health podcast, titled “TheEWpodcast,” and the two met when Jay had the incredible experience of being a guest on Eric's show. Eric started his podcast after years of battling with severe depression, and after finding a therapist and other resources that benefitted him mentally, he decided to continue his quest for knowledge and share with the world. Eric and Jay explore the narrative Eric held onto that seemingly kept him locked in depression, and he reveals an aspect of this story that fueled a majority of his self-loathing and shame; something he explained he had only told a handful of people up to this point. Ultimately, though, through seeking professional help, finding the support of an accepting partner, and a chance psychedelic experience at a music festival, Eric can now say he is on the upside of his mental health journey… and continuing to seek growth daily. Eric is the definition of perseverance, he’s an all-around genuine and thoughtful human, and his story is an inspiration to push through whatever challenges life delivers.
