268. “I want to, BUT …” When Ambivalence Drains Your Motivation with Meg Rentschler

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Are you facing down the ambivalent monster? This might sound like, "I want to get healthy and strong! But I'm not waking up at 5 a.m." It could be a goal or a new project, and all of a sudden, there's a big BUT. (Yes, I made that joke.) Ambivalence is a natural part of change, though. If you're struggling to make a change—even a positive one—this episode will discuss some strategies for finding your motivation and reconnecting with your intentions. Meg Rentschler loves helping other people live their best lives. After 20 years as a psychotherapist, she transitioned into executive coaching in 2008 to help create healthy workplaces where people can thrive. Meg believes in the power of coaching and its ability to break down barriers and create connections. To that end, she's trained and mentored over 2,000 coaches so they can bring their impact into the world. After 20 years as a psychotherapist, she transitioned into executive coaching in 2008 to help create healthy workplaces where people can thrive. "I began to see that so many of the people that were coming to see me for therapy were working in really dysfunctional work environments," says Meg. "They were being asked to lead without being given leadership skills. They were being led by people who were great individual contributors, but then made to be a leader and had no earthly idea how to lead." She says when we think about what lights us up, if we start to feel like the energy drain is not matching the energy input from what we do, we should assess what's going on. Can you be the best you can be in this environment?  Meg says it's important to pay attention to whether or not you're looking forward to going to work or dreading it. Are you excited to engage with and be a part of it? You need to pay attention to those little energy shifts. Sometimes, we have to do things because the boss has a deadline to hit. But if all our motivation comes externally and we're not getting that internal drive, it won't be driven by the same fuel. Some people might feel the disconnect between giving a project or client everything they've got and doing well but hating it. You may be doing something strictly for someone else. Meg asks, "What makes the work important to you?" What motivates you and creates a fullness of life? In some cases, Meg says her clients might have a day job that isn't giving them that sense of purpose, but on the weekends, they might find it in volunteer work. Others might use that day job to help bridge the gap between starting their business as entrepreneurs. "What are you doing to continue to build that so that when you make that transition, it's not a transition of scarcity?" asks Meg. Even the corporate clients Meg works with sometimes need that leap of faith that entrepreneurs find themselves struggling with – can they go for that next promotion, do they have what it takes? Anytime we consider doing something differently, we'll say, "I want to, but…" But this is more comfortable. But this is routine. Meg says ambivalence is a natural part of change.  Even if it's a positive change, it might be hard. Normalize the ambivalence. Acknowledge it.  "Do I continue with the change that I said was important, or am I doing something else? And if I do something else, what's the cost of that?" asks Meg. Because sometimes priorities and goals do change.  Maybe you need to consider the advantages of the change and why you wanted to make it in the first place. What are the costs of not making it? Four months down the road, those advantages and costs might seem increasingly distant. How can you tap into your intention? Feeling that ambivalence is just a sign you need to tweak some things and move down a different path. When we're busy and tired, we give up the things that bring us joy because we don't see them as important. I'll read that book when I've got time. I'll do that puzzle when I've got time. I'll go for that massage when everything else is done. It's not going to be done. This is an episode you're going to want to come back to when you feel burnout creeping in. Host of the Simpler Business Podcast, Marissa Roberts is going to turn all the stress and anxiety on its head for you.  What I want you to listen for is how much our feelings and emotions as the business owner leak out into the business. If we're feeling anxious and nervous, it's going to impact our revenue. So listen for what Marissa says is possible as you relax and bring more money in.  Marissa's first business was Beautifully Organised. She went into homes and helped make the lives mothers with young children easier. She was burnt out in two months. “My house is messy because I'm spending eight hours a day tidying other people's homes,” says Marissa. “And then I come home and I'm like, I can't do anything, and I'm too tired to play with my kids … I've dug this hole too deep and now I have to deliver on it and I don't have enough hours in the day to do it.” From there, Marissa pivoted to online courses. She went down a rabbit hole of passive income and scalability.  “I wanted to make life easier for me, and now I get to make life easier for other people.” Business owners might have a hard time asking themselves, “What feels hard for me, and how can I delegate?” For Marissa, this meant hiring a virtual assistant who helps her with self-promotion.  We're so driven by productivity, achievements, goals and actions. Marissa says taking the time to pause and really do the internal work of why something feels difficult is key to knowing when it's time to delegate.  Sometimes a small tweak can make a big difference. For example, if you feel overwhelmed with email, telling your clients you'll only be responding to emails between certain times each day might be the boundary you need. “Clients don't mind if you set a boundary because it lets them know exactly what to expect, and they're not guessing while they're working with you,” says Marissa. Burnout can manifest differently for different people, and at various points in your life. We have an innate ability to handle things as they are raised, but what you can handle in your 20s, might look different in your 40s, or if you're handling one client versus seven. “A lot of what the strength and the resilience we get overtime comes from challenges,” says Marissa. “So it's this really interesting dynamic where I get stronger, I get tougher, I get better at problem solving, but I also get more tired and more worn out and full.” Remember that this isn't the only opportunity, and if you're clinging to the client or job as if it's your only chance, the energy you're giving out is one of desperation, need, and lack. Whereas if you recognize the opportunity, and think, “This is fantastic, I want to give it my best but I can't do that this month,” you can go back to the client thank them, and check if they can be flexible. The change is the delivery.  The ultimate self-care is tuning into what you personally need in that moment. Sometimes it will be a glass of water, sometimes it will be two weeks off. If you are having a really hard day, what would you crave to make that day feel better?  “All of those things we should be doing for ourselves and it shouldn't be lost. It's just as important as any other project we're working on,” says Marissa. Live Like You'll Live Forever: a life of thanksgiving. One of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the New World occurred in 1621, when the Plymouth colonists from England shared an autumn harvest feast with the Native American Wampanoag people. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. In 1942, President Roosevelt solidified it as the last Thursday of every November. Though not a festival of the church calendar, Christians for generations have found it appropriate to gather for worship this week to give thanks to the LORD: our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. Our sermon today comes from Philippians 4.

_Live Like You'll Live Forever: with your eyes on the skies._ “Eyes on the prize.” That axiom stresses that when pursuing some good goal…focus is important. You don't want distractions of a lack of self-discipline to keep you from obtaining whatever that prize might be. The prize that we want most is spending eternity with Jesus. As the Church Year comes to a close, Jesus promises that he will come again “in clouds with great power and glory” to give us the prize. That prize will be so unbelievably good…it is worth fixating on. Let us be ready. Let us keep watch. Let us live with our eyes on the skies.

Live Like You'll Live Forever: free from fear of judgment. Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) affects many millions of adults. They struggle with everyday tasks like talking to people at work or school out of terror that they are constantly being evaluated. Even if you don't have that disorder, perhaps you have experienced the uncomfortable feeling that others are looking for something to criticize about you. How do we overcome the fear of judgment? It begins by realizing that there is only one person whose opinion ultimately matters—the Judge. Where you spend eternity depends on Jesus' judgment. This week we see why his judgment need not trigger any sort of anxiety. Judgment day is something we can joyfully anticipate. Our sermon today comes from Daniel 12.

Live Like You'll Live Forever: offering everything to the Lord. God had commanded his Old Testament people to tithe as part of their offerings to him. It can be easy for us to get caught up in percentages of how much of our money, our time, our energy we should give to the Lord. We only have a limited amount of those things, right? Don't we need to guard some for ourselves? The same God who has given us an infinite amount of time in his Son has all the resources in the world at his disposal to provide for us. May we gladly offer all that we have and are to him who has freely given us everything in Christ! Our sermon today is from 1 Kings 17.

_Live Like You'll Live Forever: knowing that life only gets better._ “It will get better.” We say that to someone who is having a bad day (or maybe a whole string of bad days). Perhaps tomorrow will be better. But perhaps it's worse. In this life…there really are no guarantees that things will get better. That isn't the case with the life that is to come. That life isn't just going to be better…it'll be perfect. Since the 7th century, Christians have marked a day to celebrate those who have died in faith and now realize the perfect joys of heaven. Today, we ask God to preserve us in our faith so that we might one day join the saints in that place where life is far more than better.

Live Like You'll Live Forever: confessing your faith with courage._ Living life according to God's Word is going to make one appear odd in the eyes of the world, perhaps even evil. So why not just stay silent if that makes life easier? Why not keep our faith private? Answer: because we are going to live forever. Since we know we are going to live forever in the perfection of heaven…we don't worry if being a witness for Christ brings hardship or even death. Luther knew that…thanks to Christ…he would live forever. So will we. Therefore, like Luther…let us live a life of courageous witness.

How do you want to be remembered? I wonder, do you ever think about how you want to be remembered? Another way to ask that question is what epitaph would you want on your tombstone? That may sound like a depressing topic, but actually thinking now about how you want to be remembered could make a huge difference in the way you live. Most of us shy away from talking about our death; it feels morbid. But one thing is for sure—unless Jesus comes again soon to rapture his church—all of us will face death and all of us will leave behind a legacy. It's not morbid or depressing to think about how you want to be remembered; it's smart, and it's life changing. That's why my title this week is “Live Like You're Dying.” I wonder how we would live if each of us knew exactly when we would die. Have you ever thought about that? If God revealed to you the day, month, and year when you will pass from this life into eternity, how would it affect the way you live? Psalm 90 is titled “A prayer of Moses the man of God,” and here's part of that prayer: Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12). And King David prayed: Show me, O Lord, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is (Psalm 39:4). They were on the same page, even though centuries apart. They were not asking for a gift of prophecy, but rather, they were asking the Lord to help them live like they were dying—to live in the reality that their days were numbered, and their life was fleeting. How often have you prayed such a prayer: Lord, show me how fleeting—how brief, how short, how transient—my life is? Suppose we began each of our days with this prayer, asking God to help us number our days. We would then begin to live like we were dying—live in the knowledge that this world is temporary, but eternity is forever. If you're like me, some days you think about it but most days not so much. I want to encourage you as I do myself to give regular thought to the truth that you will leave this life one day and enter eternity. Are you living with eternity's values in mind? That's a good question for all of us to consider.

What the Next Eighteen Months Will Look LikePeople see the chaos all around and want to know where we are as a culture today and what the next eighteen months will look like. As a preview, we can expect economic turmoil, especially inflation and hyperinflation. There will be deception, falsehoods, and lies coming from our sacred institutions. Jesus said to expect wars and rumors of wars which will lead to the downgrading of America as a superpower. Narcissism will become the mental illness of the land, and the church will experience the great apostasy the Scriptures warned about. In a word, our future looks dark and bleak. For each of us, there are three questions we need to be asking ourselves: One, what is the end goal or what is going on? Two, what is the Lord's will for me and my family during this time? And three, why do we seem to feel or sense that time is running out and the time for playing church is over? What Can We Do? Live Like You're Soon to DieIn June 2020, Tim Keller was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. This diagnosis had a profound impact on his life. For one, he realized his life had an expiration date, and only the important things were now important to him. And two, he realized how much time he had wasted on unimportant things. Time, he could never get back and never redeem. The same could be said for each of us. Here is Tim's assessment of what he has learned about prayer since his diagnosis (he died on May 19, 2023).“Despite the pain and fear associated with cancer, Kathy (his wife) and I would never want to go back to the kind of prayer life and spiritual life we had before the cancer. Never.I realized, I never really did believe I was going to die. At some deep level, I just didn't. Looking back on it, I just don't think there's any way to go through the change that happens in you when you know that you really are going to die: the way you look at your time, the way you look at God, the way you look at your spouse— the way you look at everything just changes when you actually realize time is limited and I'm mortal.Frankly, I would have lived a better life if I had come to this realization sooner. I'm closer to where I should have been most of my life.”Remember, there is a blessing in knowing that nothing lasts forever, except the grace of God. And for living in the realization and expectation of the imminent return of Christ. To download the slides for this message, click – HEREOur Latest Posts:561: Church Ain't Working, Its Got No Power560: If He's the One Who Builds It, He Will Come559: Apostasy and Deception are Key Signs of the End558: The Most Important Prophetic Scriptures557: Hermeneutics – The Rules for Biblical...

Live Like You’re LovedHosea 9-10 Give them, O LORD— what will you give? (Hosea 9:14) Big Idea: What happens when you forget that God is a father? What happens when you forget that God loves us the way a good father loves his child? You act like an orphan. That is exactly what is happening to the Israelites in this passage. They are living like orphans. They’re not living like they belong to God and are loved by him. So what are the marks of one living like an orphan and how does God’s Fatherhood cure them? I. Disobedient (Hosea 9:1-8, 15-17; 10:13) First, living like an orphan is to live disobediently. The first and most obvious is disobedience. This is the lust of the eyes, the insistence on doing what seems best to you rather than what God requires. What will be the result of trying to make it as an orphan? You will be as “lonely as a wild donkey” (8:9). You will not find lasting love in those wrong places. So what must you do? You must seek the Lord again as your Father if you are already a Christian. If you are not, you must come to Christ for your righteousness as Hosea says in 10:12. Let go of your grip on your sins and your insistence on running your life and allowing others to determine your worth. Instead take hold of Christ and he will transfer his righteous record to you. That will complete the paperwork for becoming a child of God. It will bring you into a family of fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers who will love you unconditionally. It will set you on a path not just of right doing, but of human flourishing. And you will actually start living a life that blesses others and pleases your heavenly Father. II. Degradation (Hosea 9:9-10; 10:9-10) The second way that living like an orphan affects us is by degrading us. Rather than living according to the good design God has woven into creation and commanded us to live according to, we live according to the lust of our flesh. And because our hearts are broken with sin, this lifestyle only ends up degrading us. It makes us live more like animals than humans made in the image of God. Hosea references two major points in Israel’s history where this happened. They ended in rape and murder. Only the gospel of Jesus Christ has an answer for the questions each generation is asking. It’s a much better answer than any other we may find. What is true? God’s Word. What is real? Life as defined by God’s Word. What is good? God’s design for how we are to live in the world he created. What is beautiful? The life lived according to God’s design. III. Defiant (Hosea 9:11-14; 10:1-11, 13-15) The third manifestation of living as an orphan is defiance. This is the most frightening one. The Israelites’ pride is manifest. This is to live with a fist raised to God. They “depend on their own strength” (10:13), harm people around them (10:11), and disobey all the authorities in their life (10:3) because they do not fear the Lord (10:3). How can anyone be rescued from pride? No one can humble himself. Acting humble is “false humility” which grates on everyone because it is just another way to draw praise to yourself. True humility is believing that you are significant and what you do is significant but only because God is the sovereign Savior and giver of every good gift. So how do you get this gift of humility? You can’t contrive it; you can only pray to Jesus for it. And Jesus promises to pray to the Father for it. And the Father sends his Spirit to give it to you. Discussion Questions Have you observed the negative effects of loneliness in your own life or someone you know? How does living with God as your father help bind you to a community where you can flourish? Have you observed in your own life or in the life of someone you know the degrading effects of living according to sinful desires rather than submitting to God’s commands? How does knowing God as a good father help compel you to want to follow his commands, even if they seem like they could be counter to your desires? What is one way you may be guilty of defiance toward the Lord? Spend time praying for the humility to accept his will and live according to it.
