May 15, 1940. It's opening day. San Bernardino, California is a city on the rise, and to meet this new demand for cheap, good food, two brothers have created a restaurant: McDonald's Famous Barbecue. You can order a PB&J sandwich, barbecued pork, baked beans, and yes, a hamburger. It's a work in progress, but Dick and Mac McDonald never stop innovating. How did the McDonald brothers engineer a system that would be replicated in thousands of locations across the globe? And why don't they get the credit they deserve? Special thanks to Adam Chandler, journalist and author of Drive-Thru Dreams: A Journey Through the Heart of America's Fast-Food Kingdom; and Marcia Chatelain,  professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America.  Here are two other great books we used in putting this episode together: Ray & Joan: The Man Who Made the McDonald's Fortune and the Woman Who Gave It All Away by Lisa Napoli; and McDonald's: Behind the Arches by John F. For those of you who have been following this show since the beginning almost 2 years ago, or who have had the opportunity to go back to listen to some of the early episodes, you'll recognize this weeks' guest: Mac McDonald. Mac was one of the four people who were on a panel of rape survivors who had been assaulted on their respective college campuses in New York state. Each of them has a gripping story of what it means to be raped, then not believed, or blamed for their own assaults. Such was the case with Mac…even her close friends denied or minimized her experience of rape, which only exacerbated previous traumas and sexual assaults she had endured. But Mac is a fighter. Mac sought help for her trauma experiences, and now is progressing through the hard work of fighting the daily grip of PTSD and downward spirals. She has an amazing support system of therapists and several friends, and of course her original sisterhood of the 3 other people who were on that panel with her. Mac fights her past every day. She leans on her therapists, her friends, and the joy that comes from her job of working with children in a daycare. These children support and lift her up with their innocence and curiosity, their laughter, and their sometimes-brutal honesty of inquiry and exploration. Because of all of this support, Mac not only survives her horrific past, but is thriving and growing every day. Please listen to this episode in its entirety…that would be greatly appreciated by Mac and myself. Then, as an extra dose of support, please subscribe to this podcast! AND, I want to make you aware of my new Instagram account: @sexualassaultsurvivorstories.  I have decided to take additional steps in furthering the power of this podcast and the community of victims and survivors that are guests and listeners of this show, but also for all of you who listen to support victims and survivors, and to learn more about the impact of rape and sexual assault, as well as the power of empathy through being trauma informed. Please visit the new account @sexualassaultsurvivorstories, and hit that FOLLOW button. Then, please take an extra moment to share this account with all of your followers and also ask them to follow @sexualassaultsurvivorstories. There's power in numbers, believe me. This is PART 3 of a four-part series; an interview of Ellie Freeman. Ellie is one of the 4 people who participated on a panel several years ago at Hamilton University, to tell a multi-disciplinary audience about their rape stories. After the panel discussion, the four panelists approached me about the presentation I had done that morning, and stressed how important it was that I start a podcast to get the word out of what it means to be trauma-informed; both from the victim/survivor side, and the law enforcement side. I am forever grateful to Mac McDonald, Jennifer Jones, Ellie Freeman, and Samantha McCoy. Ellie's story is told in a quietly powerful way. Ellie is brave enough to talk about how the horrendous act of rape is exacerbated in the instance of someone having sexual contact with another person, when that situation is facilitated  by drugging the victim. The rape brings on profound feelings of guilt and self-blame…such is the case with Ellie. The level of pain is impossible to explain. Freezing is a common reaction when this level of pain is experienced. But Ellie pushed on when most wouldn't. She found that telling others about her experience was therapeutic. She found that helping others with their pain, is what helps her deal with her own. Ellie's is a story of perseverance and healing; of growing through the pain and thriving. Ellie is an amazing example of being a survivor. It is an honor to have her as a guest on this podcast, and it is an honor to call her a friend. Take this episode to heart, and really pay attention to the level of sincerity and honest empathy that Ellie experiences both with herself, and with other survivors. Then share this episode with all your friends, loved-ones, colleagues, and even acquaintances; because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault. Let's all do our part to help bring justice to victims and survivors. And remember to Start by Believing. Please subscribe to this podcast and rate each episode you listen to. Growing the audience of this podcast is key to helping bring justice to victims and survivors. Thank you for listening.

This is PART 1 of a four-part series; an interview of Mac McDonald. Mac McDonald was one of four people who, many years ago, brought up the idea of me producing a podcast to help educate and inform victims and survivors of sexual assault and rape, on trauma-informed interview principles, as well as the neuroscience of trauma and memory. It is with a thankful and proud heart that I am able to present this week's episode—an interview of Mac. Mac has held true to their promise to be a guest on this show, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Mac's story is one of coercion, fear, and manipulation; their trauma still haunts and interferes in Mac's life. But Mac is strong and feels that if even one person is impacted positively by their story, they have done some good with their traumatic and hurtful experience. Mac's heart is tender, yet strong. And they talk about the pain they endured for years at the hands of a poorly informed Title IX coordinator, as well as administrators at the college where their rape occurred. They have a message for that Title IX coordinator and the college administrators that resonates for everyone involved in Title IX investigations of rape and sexual assault: be empathic, and start by believing. Stop blaming victims. Start investigating predators and perpetrators. Mac wants to help bring justice to victims of rape and sexual assault, and I am grateful that I can help in that goal! The interviews of the other three panelists who suggested I start Sexual Assault Survivor Stories will be posted in the following weeks…this is a series you won't want to miss. Please pass on the word, that SASS exists to help bring justice to victims or rape and sexual assault. Tell everyone you know to listen to this podcast; because we all know someone whose life has been affected by rape or sexual assault. And remember: Start by Believing!

This is the story of how McDonalds came to be the #1 fast food chain in the world, analyzed and explained. When Ray Kroc laid his eyes on Dick and Mac McDonald's single-location operation in San Bernardino, he knew it was special. He'd never seen anything like it — the energy, the excitement and the efficiency, especially. So he asked the brothers out to dinner to pick their brain. With some time and convincing, the brothers reluctantly agreed to let Kroc come onboard as partner in the capacity of Head of Franchising. But Ray was a growth-minded entrepreneur, not a franchisee. Whereas the McDonald brothers were content to remain small and focused, Kroc was all about scale.Listen in as I recount the story of his ascent from those humble beginnings to the creation of an empire.Credit for the sound clips: The Founder, 2016.→ Subscribe to my newsletter, connect on Instagram, & check out more free resources. In this episode V-Mac shares about overcoming the challenges of being born with Glaucoma to accomplish some of his greatest dreams and support the dreams of others. Vincent C. McDonald Jr. also known by his stage name V-Mac, is a Bahamian, singer, Producer, Entertainment Mogul, Philanthropist, and Motivational Speaker. McDonald was born in Nassau, The Bahamas to a middle-class family. At birth, doctors discovered that he had glaucoma, which blinded him in both eyes. McDonald spent a great deal of infancy in and out of surgery and doctors were eventually able to give him sight in his left eye. His right eye, however, was replaced with a prosthetic. At five, McDonald's parents gave him a drum set for Christmas. Unknowingly, they had given him the key to unlocking what many have described as a “prodigious and prolific” talent in music and entertainment. He taught himself to play and by age eight, he'd organized his first concert on his lawn. Before turning 15, McDonald developed a following, particularly in the gospel arena He began accepting invitations to perform at church and youth events as an artist. By the age of 14, He launched his first production company V-Mac Productions and Extreme Youth Entertainment. At the time, McDonald was the youngest gospel producer, singer, performer, record label owner in the Bahamian gospel genre – all while was still a freshman in high school. He began balancing the demands of producing events and school with his newfound hobby of media and television. The demands for performing and public speaking grew and McDonald also became a role model for a new wave of young gospel singers who combined modern elements with classic styles. Considering him peer instead of an old industry head, he began entertaining requests to help launch careers through music production, songwriting, composing and arranging, stage set up and music video production. After getting all of the camera equipment he needed in place, 16-year-old McDonald became the youngest Bahamian to host, film, direct and executive produce a nationally televised series with his Extreme Youth TV. After the overwhelming success of his television show, McDonald decided the time was right to bring out his own project. His debut solo album Elevation quickly climbed to the top of the charts in The Bahamas and Caribbean and launched him as a bona fide international artist. In 2010, McDonald took on two major projects – Partnering with longtime friend and Business Partner Lavard “Manifest” Parks in launching their own Internet radio station www.ultimatevibesradio.com, which was the premiere Online Radio Station for Caribbean Gospel Music. In Summer 2011, VMac then teamed up with upcoming Gospel Sensation Lyrically Blessed to release and co-produce their collaborative worship Album “The Way We Praise” McDonald has made no apologies for his Christian faith, He also has given back to the community, particularly to those with visual impediments.
