On today’s episode, Greg and Brian are joined by their long time friend Matt Fennel.Matt is currently running a training facility aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and he also still serves in the Marine Corps Reserves. Matt has trained tens of thousands of Marines in his career and brings an extraordinary amount of experience to this particular conversation. Matt recently reached out to Brian and Greg regarding his area of study for the graduate program he is enrolled in. After a few email exchanges, they decided to hop on a call to discuss the topic. Basically, the question that Matt is trying to answer is “How do I squash the learning curve?” Meaning, how do we speed up the learning process without losing quality and experience? They get into a number of areas during the discussion including institutional memory, what makes up proficiency, and how we are never really taught HOW to learn.Although several of the examples used in the episode involve the military, they also relate these issues directly to the private sector and some of the Fortune 100 companies that they have worked with in the past. This conversation was not originally intended to be a podcast but we decided to hit the record button after about ten minutes of talking so please forgive us for some of the audio issues as well as the profanity! The episode starts with Matt explaining why he reached out to us and the conversation picks up right from there.Contact LinksFollow us on FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/HBPRA/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arcadia_cognerati/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1S7E4hgSfLVWi4jGlKKqawWebsite: https://www.arcadiacognerati.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/A_CogneratiItunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/left-of-greg-podcast/id1448181902Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BgPDLkWp5iptfZOnXvSSEMusic from https://filmmusic.io "District Four" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/LeftOfGreg/)

The endless number of jobs offered in the military means anyone who enters can probably find something exactly suited to them. Our services have a giant scope of missions, and they need divisions to cover every type of issue - and problem. Having their own jail system is one way to handle some of those problems. Today we salute Corporal Donald J. Shipman of the United States Marine Corps. Corporal Shipman is a corrections specialist with the Security and Emergency Services Battalion at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Shipman has found the MOS that suits him perfectly. He was recently selected for the American Correctional Association Military Corrections Committee Marine Corps Corrections Specialist of the Year Award for outstanding performance during calendar year 2016. I'd like to see the plaque that fits that title. "There is never a task Cpl. Shipman cannot handle, and he is always eager to do more, he can’t get enough" said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph J. Moschetto, who is the commanding officer of the brig where Corporal Shipman works. Whether you're ranging artillery, or doing a cell check in the brig, every job in the Marine Corps is essential to the mission and to the Corps.
I've had the opportunity to hear a variety of incredible travel stories since I began podcasting. But my guest today has an adventure story unlike any other! Today on the podcast I have fellow US Marine, Matt Littrell, joining me to share his story about how he traveled overland from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, to Camp Pendelton in California. All while riding on the back of a horse! Matt joined the Marine Corps in 2001, heading to boot camp just after 9/11. He was then stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California and assigned as an Infantryman with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. Following his service, he faced many demons in his head and found himself looking at his pistol with thoughts of ending it all. This made him think about the other Veterans out there who might be struggling with the same thing. It was then when he knew that he had to ride a horse across the country. And that he would do it to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund to help his fellow Veterans. From there he started The Long Trail Home Facebook page to showcase his adventure. And in 2014, he and his riding partner Ray set off from the Atlantic coast and began heading west. After seven months on the road, they lead their horses into the water of the Pacific Ocean! Since then, he returned to Colorado and opened the Valhalla Ranch. Where he welcomes other Veterans to come and ride horses and do other activities. In this episode, Matt shares this incredible story, talking about some of the highlights and the low points, and what he is currently doing to continue to serve his fellow Veterans. The July mass arrest of 15 Camp Pendleton Marines in front of their 800-person battalion may have violated their rights and threatens to upend the case, attorneys for two of the accused told the Union-Tribune. On the morning of July 25, as 800 Marines stood in formation at the Camp San Mateo area of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, 24 Marines' names were called. Fifteen were ordered to stand in a line in front of the battalion “to be recognized,” according to court filings in the case. The battalion sergeant major stood nearby, carrying a red folder that usually is associated with awards. But these men weren't awarded. The regiment sergeant major, Sgt. Major Matthew A. Dorsey pointed to the Marines in front and said, “NCIS, arrest these Marines.”
