I’ve been doing a lot of shifting lately. Structuring my time differently. Saying no to things that used to get a default yes. Creating space not just in my calendar, but in my head and heart for things that actually matter to me. In this episode, I sat down with my mate Mark LeBusque and we spoke about all of it. The constant recalibration. The resistance to slowing down. The trap of chasing what we think success should look like. The way we celebrate wins but never interrogate them. We talked about being 15,429 days old and still learning how to be human. How even when you know better, you still forget. Still fall back into the grind. Still need someone to flick you on the ear now and then to wake you up. And somewhere in between the laughs, the deep stuff, and the robot in the corner of Mark’s office… we both found ourselves asking some pretty honest questions. If you’re feeling stretched, stuck, or like you’re pouring energy into the wrong things, this one might land. In this ep, I'm joined by the one and only Mark LeBusque, a leader in leadership (pun intended), and the guy who gets to the heart of what makes us tick as humans. We dive into some big stuff (as we always do) like the stories we tell ourselves, the circumstances we think define us, and what happens when those two worlds collide. Fresh from my recent transformational experience in India (yep, still unpacking that mountain-top magic), I couldn't wait to pick Mark's brain about the tricky dance between our internal narratives and external realities. Spoiler alert: there's no one-size-fits-all band-aid for the wounds we carry. But we do have the power to write (and rewrite) our own stories. It's typical to go into deep unchartered waters when LeBusque is on the show, but it's more typical that Mark is peeling back the layers of Tiff to see what's lurking beneath the surface. This week, we're switching seats and I'm taking the wheel on this. We get into why saying 'sorry' might be a sneaky survival tactic (and how to stop over-apologising)... The cognitive immune system: what it is, why it sabotages us, and how to keep it in check... Adaptive vs. forced change, and why forcing it never works... Mark's honest reflections on burnout, balance, and the sneaky ways life knocks on your door with lessons you don't want to learn... How gratitude, even for the hard stuff like shame, can set us free. This is a no-filter chat about what it really means to roll with life's punches (pun absolutely intended), and why the work we do on ourselves never really stops. Whether you're navigating your own mountain, or just figuring out how to survive Monday, you're going to want to tune in. This chat is a continuation of the concept Mark and I were unpacking back in episode 803 where we ask the question 'What if we approached life as an ongoing experiment?'. In this episode, Mark LeBusque discusses the challenges of leadership development programs and the importance of focusing on basic human leadership skills. Mark also addresses the question of improving interactions and relationships with peers in leadership positions. He suggests having conversations about expectations, work style preferences, and what great leadership looks like.
What if we approached life as an ongoing experiment, much like a game of Monopoly? How would the weight of our decisions, circumstances, opportunities, successes, and even failures shift and shape our experiences and outcomes? Mark LeBusque joins us again today, bringing his thought-provoking perspectives as we discuss some of our own current "experiments." In this episode of the In the Raw podcast, Mark LeBusque answers two questions about workplace meetings and the impact of leadership programs. He discusses the problem of excessive and unproductive meetings in the workplace and suggests that people need to be brave and just don't go.In the second question, Mark acknowledges that many leadership programs have not resulted in lasting impact and that organisations need to have bold conversations about who attends these programs - and why.Got a workplace question for Mark? In this episode, Mark LeBusque discusses the challenges of being a leader and the need for more honest conversations about the realities of leadership. Being promoted to a position of authority does not automatically make someone a leader! Mark also addresses the issue of new coworkers constantly referencing their previous company and offers advice on how to address this without demotivating them.
Another brilliant chat with the wonderful, brutally honest and ever insightful Mark LeBusque in the bag today! We explore our 'stop and go' stories, you know the ones that hold us back or propel us forward, but often run on their own accord in our heads and dictate our behaviour. I discover my internal 'little miss nobody' identity (have you got one of those too?). How do we get out of our own way? How do we break the cycle? How do we develop the skill of intuition? He never fails to get real and raw with me in these chats and I love it to bits. (Free coaching, hey!) Being thoughtful, productive, and constantly striving for excellence is admirable, but at what cost? The problem arises when our natural tendency to develop habits and routines morphs into a pattern of always putting everyone and everything else first. In doing so, we often sideline ourselves, our most crucial ally. While 'selfishness' rarely receives applause, a certain kind of well-intentioned selfishness is not just a refreshing approach for maintaining high performance and happiness, it's absolutely essential. Hell, I'm still grappling with this balance at 40... How about you? In our chat, LeBusque and I dig into this idea. We also delve into building confidence, maintaining integrity, and learning to accept that 'you belong in that room (so #%$@ off imposter syndrome). If, like me, you've been chained to the grindstone, letting comparisons, corrode your confidence, and you're ready for a reality interrogation, then step into our office. It's February and a lot of people jump on board Febfast for a variety of things to remain abstinent from. For me, it's the 24/7 data analysis that my Garmin watch blesses me with. Data tracking can be key to understanding and making progress... but, at what point might data become somewhat destructive? Mark LeBusque and I reflect on data around a range of related topics in this chat, along with how and why we judge people and what makes us like (or dislike) them, and how understanding our strengths and personality styles (more data, incidentally) can help us work, grow, connect and conquer. This podcast ep was sparked by some thoughts on a mind-bending book I've been getting stuck into this week, "The Courage to be Disliked" by Ichiro Kishimi. Big thanks to our pal Mark LeBusque for the killer recommendation! Reflecting on the past year, one thing's crystal-clear - life's a bloody rollercoaster, right? Instead of chasing that elusive and unattainable perfect, stress-free life, why aren't we embracing the chaos? During a stroll, I mulled over some New Year's self-reflection questions and one key question stuck with me: What have I stated I want to change but haven't? This led to a deep dive into identifying obstacles, intentions, and committing to action. So, I'm throwing out an invite for a mini-coaching session. Let's set some solid intentions for 2024 and turn aspirations into actions, shall we? With that question in mind, I unpack some of the following: Defining what's needed for change. Identifying obstacles and assess their validity. Figuring out who's needed to support the change and how to communicate effectively. Assessing our willingness to give up certain things for the desired change. Digging into the motivations behind the stated desire to change. Tackling any inner-dialogue and doubts about self-worth and deservingness. Jump in, let's make 2024 the year of actionable change! Amidst our typical array of life-exploring conversations, Mark LeBusque and I delve into a range of intriguing topics, from intergenerational resilience to Mark's alleged grumpiness and the mysteries of 'nose beers.' Recently, our discussion turned to the concept of the 'secret you' - that aspect of oneself concealed from the outside world. Is it essential to maintain a hidden version of ourselves, and if so, when does the need for secrecy stem from shame, potentially jeopardizing our well-being and inner narrative? If you're into deep work, you're definitely into hearing from Mark LeBusque. I sure am and this conversation is yet another one where Mark pulls no punches on himself as he opens up about the work he's doing in his own life, and in others. Prompted by the idea in a recent book that Mark's reading around the courage to be disliked, we take about some of the confronting thoughts and beliefs we hang on to, such as in Mark's case the perceived 'bad dad' label, from the days he now reflects on and feels that he prioritised a corporate career over his kids sports and various milestones. It takes a hell of a lot of courage to speak up about stuff like this, and that why I absolutely adore having Mark on the show! Well, that and he keeps me mighty honest and challenges my own thinking and behaviour at the same time. Oh and be sure to stick around 'til the end when LeBusque belts our some Johnny Cash on his guitar... In true Mark & Tiff style, this episode came about by way of my impromptu invitation and thus we freestyled around a number of top-of-mind topics... Some of which were (rudely) Mark dubbing my good self as a knuckle-dragger and oxygen thief by being the type of person who exercises their right to recline their aircraft seat the moment the seatbelt lights are switched off - in fact, I'd like to hear where ya'll sit (pardon the pun) on this. How our identity and image, such as Mark's ever-evolving surfy haircut brings with it assumptions, perhaps even judgement and how these things influence our interactions with people. Mark brought this question to the table, and so true to form we workshopped some thoughts and ideas around it. "Is it the way it is because we want it that way?" To be honest, it's a variate to a question I often ponder and pose to others. Are we merely lip-syncing to the "change is good" anthem while harboring a secret hankering for things to remain comfortably unchanged? Could there be a cheeky little existential curveball in play? Mark is itching to inject some much-needed structure into his business. But on the flip side, guess who's lurking in the shadows? The fear of waving goodbye to his hard-earned identity. Hopefully some curious questions you might like to ask yourself should you relate to these scenarios. Is it just me or does it seem like Mark is constantly on vacation? So it's no surprise that he's barely out of his holiday togs as we sit down to record this chat. However, his frequent travels align with his beliefs about living a fulfilling and balanced life, so I'm planning to watch and learn a little. In our conversation, Mark provides insight into crafting an effective 'out of office' message. The other day I had the pleasure of joining Mark LeBusque on his poddy (Simply, Practically Human) and he wheeled out an assortment of my whiteboard lessons (from Insta) to unpack. Among other things, we spoke about being an Opsimath (it's a thing, you might be one), chest-beaters (and the quiet ones up the back), sharing a 'selfie' of your mind (versus your body), becoming aware of our conditioning and programming, the value of leaning into the uncertain, unfamiliar and unpredictable and of course, we covered all-things mind, self-awareness, self-regulation and self-optimisation. Mark LeBusque is back for a chat about what we love most... Yep, easter eggs. And change, of course. He's unpacking The 3 T's Of Change concept. LeBusque is back and he's luring me into the metaphorical boxing ring with him! Ok I'm kidding, he's not really... but in true Mark LeBusque form he's nudging a few of my buttons over here (I wholeheartedly welcome) to test how rigid or perhaps bullshitty my stories might be (possibly... but possibly not). Cos that's what great friends who really want to see you grow do. We talk about how humans are a bag of meat full of stories (Marks definition, and I'm stealing it) and how the language we use is absolutely crucial to be aware of. It's not often we acknowledge that is it? That sometimes doing nothing IS doing something, and perhaps it's just the something we should be doing from time to time. Mark LeBusque is sliding back into the hotseat with me, very casually might I add, as he returns from his end of year downtime and wellness retreat where he undertook some emotional healing practices, had a couple of tarot card readings and got a little perspective on life after what has evidently been an enormous year professionally, mentally and emotionally. Anyone else relate? I thought you might, so it's fair to say you may just dig a few ideas out of today's conversation worth exploring and implementing in your own world. We also discuss the relationships and interactions we allow in our lives and our interpretation of them. Why do we resist change when it's us who wants the change in the first place? Over the years I have been fascinated by my perceived ability to self-sabotage, reframe and create all sorts of stories around why I haven't made the changes I once (or maybe repetitively) said I would. I'm not alone... I bet you're even nodding your head right now as you think of a thing or two you've wanted to change but found yourself to be the biggest source of resistance. Right? I was recently on the ‘Simply Practically Human' podcast with Mark LeBusque and as is often the way, we opened the door on the never ending ‘how do I manage me and not f*ck up my life?” question. Mark LeBusque is back... Well actually, it's the other way around. Mark had me back on his podcast Simply Practically Human and we bantered about some of our recent experience, what it was like meeting each other in real life and of course my journey from dogs to cats and my preconceived ideas about whether or not I was a 'cat person'. Oh, don't worry... she's not a crap cat :) Enjoy! Mark LeBusque is on a mission to challenge leaders and organisation to be more human. His people centric approach to leadership and organisation development is both provocative and timely as companies grapple with the competing tensions between people and profit. In this episode Ged talks with his good friend Mark about the mission, why it matters and how leaders can adopt more human-centric practices that can unleash the real potential of their teams and organisations.
My (second) favourite Mark is back in the banter-house with me today to talk it out and sift through the human-ness of life and nut out the good, bad and the ugly of our operating systems. From exploring the concept of our cognitive immune systems, to rummaging around our 8 drawer bad news filing cabinets to see what bullsh*t we have ready to pull out on an already rainy day... Mark LeBusque from the ‘Simply, Practically Human' podcast and I got together (with Melissa) and had a natter (that's a Mary word) about all the stuff that can impact our overall health, which doesn't get much of a mention. We put aside the typical ‘food, exercise and lifestyle' conversation to focus on the potential health benefits of things like laughter, music, connection, purpose, goals, animals, hugs and nature and the health risks of things like loneliness, isolation, retirement and the feeling (or reality) of not being needed, valued, wanted and/or loved. Deep human connection can be therapeutic, healing, immune system boosting, mind altering (for the better) and anxiety reducing. This is an important topic. Enjoy. With bigger and bigger expectations being placed on leaders today, especially in sales, it is not uncommon for leaders to become almost robotic and clinical with their approach to either process or the numbers. And often the result is a team culture that lacks cohesion, lacks trust, and ultimately fails to deliver sustainable results. In today's episode, I had a wonderful conversation with Mark LeBusque and we discuss why putting human back into leadership can deliver results in a sustainable way. Mark shares an episode of Tiffanee Cook's Roll With The Punches Podcast where the tables were turned and he was the guest. Why? Because he's human and hadn't recorded a new guest podcast of his own!! Enjoy some banter between two humans who tell it as they see it.
'You don't look stressed enough.' That was the feedback Mark LeBusque received when he was successfully running a team of sales people back in his corporate job days... Pffft, what a metric to be measured by! Is it any wonder we've forgotten how to be human at work? Well, host of the Simply Practically Human Podcast Mark and I unpack a bunch of stuff just like this along with some other rotten tomatoes life piffed at him along the way such as losing his own father to suicide. Throwing in the towel on being an asshole at work to get results. Throwing in the towel on holding the lifeline of an unfulfilling career to start his own business. Throwing in the towel on fumbling through grief. I loved this chat, littered with good advice and life strategies! Mark LeBusque, Tiff and I wax lyrical about a bunch of things in this very-informal chat, including the credibility of ‘work-life balance' as an idea (there's a better concept), the psychology of Christmas (some people are already planning for a terrible day and making themselves anxious four weeks before it's ‘required'), the idea of ‘life design' (what is it and how we can do it) and lots more. In this Candid Craic, we find out how Mark LeBusque's exploration into his own dark and messy organisational existence - he was once known as the baby-faced assassin - led to a deep examination of self and a "spiritual" journey of self-awareness and high performance. We look at how Mark provokes leaders and teams into examining the self they bring to work, and how an unexamined version of that self can stop things from flowing effectively. We look at how vulnerability, compassion, courage, kindness and self-forgiveness play vital roles in the development of good leadership, and how the leadership journey is comprised of many micro-moments of realisation, awareness and reflection that, over time, combine to produce holistic and sophisticated leadership abilities. We hear his answer to the nine trillion dollar question, learn how he has constantly experimented with life and work - and how those experiments changed in nature as he matured - and probe his thoughts about the future of work. Hosted by www.eqlab.co - learn a new way to lead.
My final lesson for the week comes from a question that Mark Lebusque on his Simply, Practically Human Podcast (due for release at the end of the month) and it was around whether Comfort and Growth can co-exist. So today I am sharing my thoughts around that. Everyone deserves a break. So why, when an opportunity arises, does guilt become an issue for some managers or business owners? Mark LeBusque, Founder and Director of the Human Manager, says we should remove the last three letters from the word selfish, because everyone benefits and life is short. Mark goes solo again and talks about why we all need a mix of disciples, doubters, and detractors in our lives, and gets personal about how his house catching fire taught him an important lesson on why focusing on the cosmetics and 'look at me' moments and not what can't be seen is a trap for all humans in the workplace.
In this episode Mark shares his guest spot on Kristen Harcourt's 'Inspirational Leadership Podcast', and shares his approach to Humanising workplaces.
Is work-life balance really an achievable goal? Well not as it's currently structured. Mark LeBusque, Founder & Director of The Human Manager, suggests that businesses think of it instead, as life design. A holistic approach that doesn't separate work from life, since they're one and the same, but makes staff accountable, happier and more effective at both. For this week's Inspirational Leadership Podcast I spoke with Mark LeBusque, who's universally known as the “Human Manager” and his proven techniques for elevating leaders and energizing employees make him an internationally sought after speaker, facilitator, mentor and coach. His books BEING HUMAN and the little book of HUMAN have challenged the way Managers and Organizations view the value of the 100- year old Management system and has sparked a more Human approach across the globe. He has an innate ability to both speak and seek the truth, provoke humans to step into their own reality and skillfully combines practicality and simplicity with textbook theory. Mark is Harvard Business School Trained and an accredited Practitioner in Adaptive Leadership and Instincts at Work. With experience across a wide range of areas from the floor to the boardroom in operations, customer service, sales, human resources, general management and education he believes that starting with Human Being creates better Human Doing, and Humannovation drives Innovation.
What if business owners and managers treated their staff like… humans? Well as far as Mark LeBusque is concerned, not enough workplaces run with humans in mind, expecting a more robotic type response. Mark is a Harvard-trained consultant, author and Founder & Director of The Human Manager. And he has 7 steps to become human managers, with the goal of enabling staff to shine and businesses to grow. Mark LeBusque from the Simply Practically Human Podcast has been kind enough to tolerate me on his show for a six-week series that we're recording each Saturday morning at coffee o'clock. This was instalment one and because I recorded it eight days ago (as I write this), I have no idea what it's about. Probably stuff about humans, behaviour, thinking, transformation and growth. There's a shock. Pretty sure it's good though. Enjoy.
I was recently on the ‘Simply Practically Human' Podcast with Mark LeBusque and because I'm innately lazy, I'm back in the TYP hammock and doing another podcast ‘share'. What would happen if managers would stop treating their teams as employees, and instead started treating others and themselves as human beings? Mark LeBusque asked himself this question years ago, drew a plan and executed it. The results? As Mark told me: "Raf, magic happened". Results went through the roof, and I am not surprised at all. Today Mark is on the mission of helping teams bringing the best human version of themselves to work. Mark wrote two books: "Being Human" and "The Little Book Of Human", set up his consultancy business, launched a podcast "The Simply Practically Human" and speaks in stages across the globe.
