POPULARITY
"You're all fools. Heroic fools. The brave are always the first to die." And with that, the first season of X-Men: The Animated Series comes to a triumphant, confident conclusion. In different circumstances, these 13 episodes might have instead served as the entirety of the series. The full production staff who worked their magic in crafting the show from the ground up, taking such care in maintaining fidelity to the source material while also telling original stories for a different medium, had fulfilled their contracts and largely parted company. They held no expectations of working on the series beyond the initial 13-episode commitment from Fox -- or, indeed, of the series even continuing beyond that. With the benefit of hindsight, such a premature demise sounds utterly ridiculous given the show's enormous success since its haphazard Halloween premiere. Against scheduling snafus, panic-inducing deadlines, animation errors, and tepid support from network executives, it became clear that X-Men would NOT be denied. By the airdate of this finale, the shoe was on the other foot with Fox scrambling to re-assemble their dream team ahead of an inevitable second season. As for the episode itself, it wisely dispenses with complex plot elements in favor of a straightforward rescue mission. Senator Kelly has been abducted, so the X-Men have a job to do. The interconnected, highly serialized series structure allows the story to lean on previous episodes to establish the stakes. Kelly's assassination is destined to start a chain of events that sees the world plunged into a brutal dystopia under Sentinel rule. It must be prevented at all costs. With the quick pivot away from Magneto's menace teased last episode in favor of the Sentinels' return, all of the pieces are in place for that dark future to almost certainly be realized. In some ways, denying viewers a highly anticipated rematch between the X-Men and Magneto feels like a bit of a cheat, especially on the strength of such a dramatically effective cliffhanger. Nevertheless, this proves to be a shrewd act of discipline consistent with what we will more commonly see in Magneto's presentation over the course of the series: conflicted antagonist at worst, and unlikely ally at best. It surprisingly proves to be a far more nuanced characterization as compared to the contemporaneous comics, which practically took him back to his stark-raving Silver Age roots. Controversial twist aside, "The Final Decision" is all the better for getting Magneto back into play. With the Sentinels almost immediately turning on their creator, the episode also manages to work in more commentary on the illogical nature of humanity's prejudice against mutants. From there, the plot smartly lays out to let the X-Men simply fulfill their remit: protecting a world that fears and hates them. This allows for a slower pace, lingering on a number of quick but effective character spotlights, before ratcheting the action back up for an appropriately kinetic climax. Each team member's individual decision in grappling with the question of whether or not to join what looks to be a hopeless mission, set to a dramatic, swelling score, is one of the finest, shining moments for the ensemble cast in the show's entire run. It's scenes like these that allow us to overlook some of the smaller, Saturday Morning Cartoon segments of unintentional goofiness (such as the Blackbird being packed with a comically enormous amount of explosives as Professor X flies it into Master Mold, or the goofiness of Master Mold's evil master plan). All told, capping off this first season with a satisfying, energetic, decisive victory over the Sentinels offers perfect symmetry in calling back to the series premiere, resolving our heroes' unfinished business and bringing a number of character arcs full circle.

And to reshape the world in my image” -- Magneto
To Me, My X-Men & Mutant Liberation BeginsOne year after Professor Charles Xavier left Earth with the Shi'ar,[a] the X-Men continue their mission to defend mutants and humans alike and go on to become legally sanctioned by the United Nations (UN). Additionally, Jean Grey has become pregnant while support for mutants has grown. After the X-Men save a young mutant named Roberto da Costa from the Friends of Humanity (FoH), Jean sees that they were outfitted with Sentinel tech and probes Henry Peter Gyrich's mind for the location of the Sentinels' creator, Bolivar Trask. Despite succeeding, she receives a horrifying premonition while doing so. The team later find Trask at a junkyard in the Sahara, where he is rebuilding his Sentinels with the aid of a lobotomized Master Mold. After defeating the Sentinels and apprehending Trask, Cyclops and Jean ponder leaving the team to raise their son away from mutant hatred. The following day, Magneto reveals Xavier's will, in which Xavier gave him control of the Institute and entrusted him with leading the X-Men.While trying to live up to Xavier's legacy, Magneto has taken to saving humans and mutants alike and refraining from killing anti-mutant militants. Distrustful of him, Cyclops and Jean stay to observe Magneto while Rogue sympathizes with his struggles. When UN forces led by Valerie Cooper arrive at the Institute to arrest Magneto for his past terrorism, he surrenders peacefully, hoping to gain the X-Men and humanity's trust. During his trial at the UN's headquarters, the FoH stage an assault on the building. Their leader, X-Cutioner, attempts to shoot a de-powering radiation blast at Magneto, but Storm takes the hit for him. Magneto stops the assault, after which the UN grants him a pardon and discuss the possibility of integrating the mutant nation Genosha. Meanwhile, Jean goes into labor and Rogue is forced to absorb an obstetrician's knowledge when he refuses to deliver a mutant's baby. Jean gives birth to a son, whom she names Nathan. When Beast informs Storm that X-Cutioner's blast de-powered her permanently, she leaves the team to find new meaning in life. While discussing her decision, the X-Men are surprised by the sudden arrival of a woman who looks identical to Jean.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

One Man's Worth comes to a heartbreaking conclusion and we explore such questions as: Why did Master Mold make sentinels with abs? Why did it take the better part of 2 episodes for them to say Bantam's name? And did Fitzroy REALLY need 8 seconds and 2 camera angles to drain Charles Xavier's energy? All this and more with cohosts Drew Kunas, Sarah Mucek, and Michael Short.

Cyclops is Waiting for Me - An X-Men: The Animated Series Weekly Recap
So the good thing about time travel is if you go back to the past and mess up, you can just go back again and fix it, right? In what should be a shock to no one, JC and Rod are not physicists so they are going along for the ride as alternate present Wolverine and Storm see Alternate Future Forge before attempting once again to save Xavier from Master Mold and Fitzroy's plan to stop him from ever becoming the founder of the X-Men and leader of a mutant future. Cyclops is Waiting for Me - An X-Men: The Animated Series Weekly Recap
How important is Charles Xavier? Well judging by the episode's title, we are going to find out. Rod leads another Bishop episode and learns even more about alternate timelines, including one with resemblances to the Age of Apocalypse, at least based on character designs, as some time travel shenanigans from Fitzroy and Master Mold lead to Chuck's death in the late 50s and undoing the founding of the X-Men. We finally made it to the series finale of Wolverine and the X-Men, which features 23 jam-packed minutes of Wolverine trying to cross the front lawn of the Hellfire Club mansion. It takes him the entire time to get there, and meanwhile, Sentinels destroy a major American city and the Phoenix inhabits all five Cuckoos and destroys the Sentinels and also tries to re-enter Jean's body. Emma shows up at the very end to sacrifice herself and save everyone, which is a huge relief, because Xavier and the rest of the X-Men in the future had seemingly no chance of beating Master Mold. The very end of the show depicts Apocalypse, who has a rock star cult leader persona, and we're kinda sad we didn't get to watch THAT show.

The Superhero Show Show #424Young, Dumb, and Full of Justice Young Justice: Phantoms takes center stage, plus X-Men: The Animated Series, Moon Knight, and more! On an all-new, all-different Superhero Show Show, the Taste Buds put Young Justice: Phantoms in the Main Event for the first time? Was this a normal episode of the show? That depends. Do normal episodes of the show start with a very serious depiction of what it's like to be divorced while raising a kid on the spectrum? Do normal episodes focus on a bunch of bugs, who are called bugs by humans, but they call each other Forager? If this all seems normal to you, then the Taste Buds watched an incredibly normal episode of Young Justice: Phantoms. Did it all work for them? Tune in to find out! Next, the Cassie and the Boyz discuss all of the other shows from this week, including Moon Knight, Riverdale, The Walking Dead, and The Flash. Then, it's off to X-Tazmania, as the Days of Future Past continues to play out in part one of One's Man Worth. Master Mold has sent a team of assassins back in time to kill young(ish) Charles Xavier, and it's up to a group of X-Men from an Xavier-less future to jump in the timeline and try to save them. Make sense? Not if you watch the episode! And then finally, Ryan sits down with Margot Carlson and Jordan Crucchiola to talk about the new season of The Whole Movie Podcast, which is all about robot movies. Intro Background (1:40) Rogue created by Chris Claremont and Michael Golden in Avengers Annual #10 (August 1981) Born Anna Marie in Mississippi, her parents disappeared when she was young, and she was raised by her strict aunt - she rebelled as a teen, earning the nickname Rogue After kissing a boy named Cody, her latent mutant abilities manifested, sending Cody into a coma - she discovered any skin-to-skin contact with a person would cause her to absorb their life force, and in some cases their memories - she covered herself up to avoid touching anyone ever again Mystique found Rogue and began mentoring her, eventually bringing her into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants - she was sent to attack Carol Danvers - during the fight, prolonged contact caused Rogue to permanently absorb Carol's powers, and gave Carol amnesia - the Danvers identity would remain with Rogue for many years, eventually causing Rogue to seek out Professor Xavier for assistance She eventually joined the X-Men, slowly earning their trust and becoming a valuable teammate, even as Danvers continued to control her in periods of stress or unconsciousness - after losing her powers in a battle with Master Mold, she discovered the Danvers identity was also gone As her powers returned, she also began an on-again/off-again relationship with Gambit, but her lack of physical intimacy and his dishonesty caused friction for a long time - after a battle with Destiny robbed them both of their powers, they left the X-Men and moved in together to explore their relationship After another battle with Mystique where her foster mother tried to kill her, she absorbed Mystique's powers and left her for dead - went to the Australian outback to figure out how to control her powers - with the help of Xavier, she was able to control her absorption for the first time in her life Eventually started a relationship with Magneto, although it was largely long-distance, as they both had other commitments Originally stayed neutral during AvX, but joined the staff at the Xavier Institute after a fight broke out on campus and She-Hulk inadvertently injured some children Turned down a marriage proposal from Magneto, and ended their relationship Joined the Avengers Unity Division as a mutant representative, eventually becoming field leader Restarted her relationship with Gambit, and after Kitty Pryde broke off her engagement to Colossus at the altar, Gambit proposed to Rogue on the spot, and they were married instead - got transported to the Mojoverse for their honeymoon, since Mojo wanted a famous couple for his new show Issues (6:15) Authoritarian upbringing caused her to rebel Inability to touch anyone caused problems in her relationships, both romantic and platonic (18:26) Broken relationship with Mystique, where they alternate between trying to kill each other and trying to work together (27:06) Break (34:36) Plugs for BetterHelp, Grief Burrito, and Chris Claremont Treatment (36:11) In-universe - Use other mutants to help transmute the energy flow as a result of contact and help her move past that Out of universe - (40:06) Skit (49:22) Hello Rogue, I'm Dr. Issues. - Hey there, sugah. So, what can I do for you? -I don't know, what can you do? *sarcasm* Hardee har har. I have the ability to listen to what you have to say, synthesize that dialogue in a way that may have some benefit to you and your relationships, while monitoring for any signs of a formal diagnosis that needs more focused treatment. -Shoot, I thought you were gonna get all flustered like most guys do when someone like me talks coy with them. I got over that a long time ago. -Must be nice Meh. -*pause* Well, I guess that's my way of saying I'm stuck. I either push people away too quickly, or I dive in and get myself into stuff I can't just walk out of. Why not? -That's a really easy one. Do you know about my powers? I do my homework, sure. -Well, imagine if your first chance at a physical connection, you destroy their life...I mean, REALLY destroy it. You don't get over that. There's no amount of talking that can fix that. *pause* I'm terribly sorry. From the tone in your voice I can tell it wasn't intentional. -But it doesn't stop there. I was led to do some horrible things to people and I didn't know the consequences. That's the type of thing that some people can't ever live with themselves over. Do you get what I'm saying? Hmm...has it ever gotten to that point for you, where life wasn't worth it anymore? -No! Well, not like that, but to disappear, to not hurt anybody, that's the type of thing I wish for sometimes. This next question is meant to get to something deep here, so please don't think I'm trying to lead you...why haven't you disappeared? -That's like trying to hide the Juggernaut in a kiddie pool. That dog won't hunt. Besides, every time I did walk away, my past came back to bite me. So I gave up on tryna run. So anonymity doesn't work, but your powers are a huge factor in any basic intimacy...wow, I have to say, I'm impressed you've continued to persevere as well as you have. -Thank you...not many people see it that way besides you. I'm glad to hear that there's more than just me. -Are you always trying to see the glass half full? I try to see the glass with whatever amount is inside, the contents, the condition of the glass, the -I get the point. No stone unturned. Does that mean you want to know who sees the good in me? -Of course! -Let's start with Remy number one. That man...there's something about that man, it's hard to describe. He just...lights me up inside. Aww, that's sweet! -Hold on, ah don't want it to sound all peaches and cream. Ah mean, when it's good, it's finer than frog hair. But he's got a real stubborn streak. When he doesn't get his way, he doubles down on how he feels. Shucks, I think sometimes he argues with me just to watch me burn up! Maybe; I don't want to speculate on him since I don't' know him as well as you do. But you're the one who says he makes you feel that way. That type of bond doesn't happen overnight. -Damn right it doesn't! How many people get told they have to wait for the right time, and that time might be never? Well, he was there for all of it. Even when I went my own way, he came right back to me no matter what. As with most relationships, that sounds like a two-way street. However you got to the point that you are on a similar wavelength, I'm genuinely happy for you. To be honest, if you're doing okay with that aspect of things, maybe there's another part of your life that is challenging you. -Everything. I see that's your style of response, but can we please drill down a bit? -Can we not and say we did? Rogue, I'm really not a hardass. You don't have to be scared of a psychiatrist. -*laughs* Oh sugah, I'm not scared of you. I'm scared of what I'll say to you. You probably lock up half the people you see just for speaking their mind. I only look out for the safety of my patients and the rest of society. Having emotions is not a risk. It's what you do with those emotions that counts. As long as you are not a danger to yourself or others, this is completely confidential. And if it's in the past, then I would never put you through “double jeopardy.” -So if I told you that my second mama wanted to kill me after I had made up with the women she had me nearly kill and take her life, you're not gonna arrest me? *dramatic gulp* Well, I didn't quite expect that, but...no. My main concern is how that -*sarcasm* How did it make me feel? HOW DO YOU THINK? A lot of people have that reaction...which is why I was going to ask HOW DID THAT AFFECT THE PEOPLE INVOLVED. -*pause* Son of a gun, nobody really asks that. I suppose Carol was really pissed off...wait...I KNOW she was pissed off ***that bitch tried to control me! Do you know what it's like to have your own head telling you all sorts of history that you shouldn't know or even came close to giving a shit about?*** and Mystique was mean, but she always said it was because she cared. I think that's true, she really cared about me in her own sorta way. She should really talk to you, if you'll have her. I'm always an open mind and ear for anyone within reason -The “reason” part might be a problem. So what's your goal with those relationships? -I'm not a goals kinda gal.Where the wind blows, I'll be there, good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise. Unless I don't wanna go, that is. Aaaaaand hence the name. There's nothing wrong with riding the tide and going where nature follows, and there's nothing inherently wrong with bucking a trend, either. But the balance of those two can get out of whack. It's obvious to me that you have the ability to go wherever you please, but so many times, you've been the center of attention for others because of your talent. Why not take the impulsive energy and combine it with a modest bit of forethought and live the more comfortable, less stressful life that you deserve? - Believe it or not, Doc, I actually did have some good come out of all of that we were just talking about. Carol doesn't hate me...not anymore. And when things are good with Mystique, we work well together. I'm not as dumb as you think I am just because my nature is to fight with whatever everybody says. *insulted* I NEVER thought that -Ah, there's the flustered part that I always look for when I meet someone new. *pause* Touche. Now that you've made it clear you can create any social outcome you want, how much are you willing to focus on making them enjoyable for everyone involved?. -One thing at a time Shug, one thing at a time. We good here? -That we are. - Thanks for the chat, then. See ya ‘round. And if you ever do talk to mah mama, tell her I said hi. Well, maybe see how she reacts before bringin' me up… could be a bad time for you... Ruby Rose is gone, and Javica Leslie is here. How is Javica as a replacement, and does the episode do a good job of seamlessly folding her into the story? Also, what the hell do they do about the missing lead actress? Do they do it James Bond style, and don't say anything, or do they create a Ruby Rose puppet, and just have the puppet running around screaming "I'm Ruby Rose!" Those are the only two options, so place your bets now. Then The Taste Buds travel over to The Pull List, where they discuss TWO episodes of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, plus the third episode of WandaVision, PLUS the season premiere of Riverdale!!! That's enough show. There can be no more show. Please don't let there be more show...SCREW OFF THERE'S MORE SHOW.It's the finale of the first season of X-Men: The Animated Series, and boy is it a doozy. Jonathan Hickman sets the stage for what could be the next defining milestone for the Uncanny X-Men. Two mini-series, House of X and Powers of X, intertwine a story of the past, present, and future of Marvel Comics' Mutants. Now, just two episodes into House of X, Hickman rocks the very foundation on which the House of X is built. What did we think of the setup? How did we react to the first MAJOR reveal? How do we resolve the fact that SPOILER is SPOILER? Plus, has our speculation led to uncover a major missing story point from House of X's second issue? The Discussing Network presents Discussing Comics: A Comic Book, Movie, and TV Podcast Episode 40. Hosted by Kyle Jones and Ron Stephens.
