Reflecting on community & self-care post-election. MS teaches patience. Adjusting media habits, finding strength in family history, music, & trusted connections. Summary Health Hats muses about physical, mental, and spiritual health, community connections, and self-care during these post-election times. He has changed his media consumption habits and is learning from his experiences with multiple sclerosis. He expresses anxiety and a dark curiosity about the future, drawing strength from family history, marriage, and music, and emphasizes the importance of staying connected with trusted communities and being open to help when needed. Episode Let's review the body from head to toe: tedious brain loop, dry, sticky mouth, queasy stomach, tight muscles, loose bowels, and bone fatigue. Fear, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness, with a niggling curiosity. I'm networking and reaching out to loved ones in person and virtually. Searching for facts, trust, and people to follow. I've stopped almost all pundits in print, audio, and video. My feeds are changing with more music, comedy, animals, and sports. And algebra—why algebra? I'm sticking with following Heather Cox Richardson, Jon Stewart, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Virginia Heffernan, the Bulwark, Your Local Epidemiologist, Men Yell at Me, the Guardian, and Sue Heatherington's fresh sight from the quiet edge. I've added AOC, Jeff Jackson, and Isaac Saul's Tangle. More music: My Latin Band, Lechuga Fresca, is on hiatus, so I joined a Dixieland Band. I'm still losing weight—30 pounds so far. I just noticed less abdominal flab to pinch when taking my shots. I can do 20 push-ups and 16 squats and can get myself up off the floor. I walk about 3,500 steps a day. I'm getting a new travel wheelchair. I have several priorities: don't fall, progress with MS as slowly as possible, maintain much of my pathological optimism, continue to play my horn, and contribute to inclusive, nurturing communities. The hardest priority may be maintaining optimism. MS has forced me to exercise my patience muscles. What choice do I have? I can't run to the bus. If I miss it, I miss it. What muscles will we strengthen over the next four years? I'm a terrible crystal ball gazer, but I know the self-care muscles will need attention. At this moment, I don't feel the urge to do much of anything except take care of myself and those with whom I'm fortunate enough to share an existence. When a plan comes to me, I'll share it. If someone else comes up with a plan, I'll check out the someone and the plan with others I ...

The Show Proem From time-to-time readers and listeners ask me about my process for podcasting. Recently, Craig Constantine, a crony in podcasting, interviewed me about my podcasting journey. Craig's process is to record a 20-minute chat and publish it immediately without editing. For listeners, find a link to Craig's episode in the show notes. For readers, go here. Why do I republish an already published episode? I learn from different styles of production. Remember that I co-published a couple of episodes in the past few months with Mighty Casey Quinlan's Healthcare is Hilarious. I'll let you know my observations in the Reflections at the end. Jumping into podcasting with both feet Craig Constantine: Hello. I'm Craig Constantine. Health Hats: Hi Craig, I'm Danny van Leeuwen. I'm a nurse, and I have led several Electronic Health Record implementations, and I've been in the C-suite of healthcare. So, I wear a lot of hats.

The Show Convening diversity for action I continue to survive and thrive. I sit around three to six tables every week with people asking questions, solving problems, figuring out how to learn, and getting things done.  Endorphin flow guaranteed. More flow, best results, most enjoyment, and inspiration when those people around the table have varied skills, experiences, and backgrounds. When I convene or join these gatherings, I seek colleagues with variation and diversity, especially different from mine. Naturally, in these situations, some people don't know each other. When they first gather, they might feel confident, at ease, unsure, intimidated, confused, hopeful, curious. Participants join to fill different or several roles: convener, leader, cheerleader, sponge, coach, doer, expert, scribe.  Sound familiar? Professions and professionalism When a diverse group of people gathers for the first time and look around the room, some look at themselves and compare. Who's who? Today, Maria shines the light on the change in education that often occurs unnoticed through initiatives teachers lead in their classrooms. She shares the stories of three high school teachers who teach different subjects from history to English, physics and chemistry but do have one thing in common: They want to help their students build skills that are rarely developed through the traditional curriculum, or they are developed in ways that students don’t find engaging. Under their respective circumstances and in their own ways, these three teachers decided to lead initiatives and create new experiences for their students. In doing so, they expanded or replaced the standard curriculum in their classrooms. Listen to these inspiring stories and Maria’s reflections to help you make education better, one classroom at a time.   Listen to this episode and explore:How teachers’ initiatives help high school students build skills rarely developed in the classroom (0:30)How Matt identified a different approach to motivate students to learn to write by becoming bloggers (2:20)How Howard taught his students financial skills to help them avoid making the mistakes he did  (7:20)How Dennis started a school newspaper to help his students develop media literacy skills and find their voice. As a person who owns my journey, my learning journey, in this case, I explore the options, the resources that are available to me. Then I direct myself to make the right choices and learn what I need to learn. At the same time, it's learning by doing. That's a very important part because we can learn a lot of things in theory. But can I communicate that knowledge? Does it bring us benefit? It doesn't help us with our life unless we put this knowledge to work. So, I believe in learning by doing and learning and exploration. So, again, we learn from other people. We learn by doing our work and continuing to explore options so we can improve what we know, and the work we do. Blog subscribers: Listen to the podcast here. Sachin Nakrani is joined by This Is Anfield editor Matt Ladson and football writer Neil Poole for a trip down memory lane. In the week when Liverpool fans will be reflecting on the one-year anniversary of the 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Anfield, the lads discuss five standout European games from Liverpool's recent past. There is a mad victory in a golden (goal) final, an emotional win over Roma, a penalty shootout triumph over Chelsea and two games with very different outcomes against Real Madrid. Sachin, Matt & Neil also debate if the Dortmund game counts as a great European night given it didn't lead to a trophy. A unique, nostalgic and absolute must-listen show.
