You have to understand the business side and the financials.● Understanding all the non-technical sides of running a company or a business is vitally important. Every industrial company out there has to understand how to run a business to be successful, or you'll go out of business. You must understand that you must take in more revenue than expense to be profitable.● You need resilience, that's for sure. You need conviction, resilience, to be committed, and you have to be in it for the long haul.● We need to identify what's the pain point, what's the need that needs to be solved, and then come up with that. Or find that technology or that innovation to solve that problem.● Many people will say no upfront or just kind of give you lip service or whatever, but you have to be persistent. You have to be resilient, find and identify those people who think like you, and get them to start speaking the same language to help you advocate. And you just have to keep at it over and over.● When you're responsible for people, the game changes significantly because everything you say and do in your actions is magnified that much more and means so much more because those people are counting on you for leadership, work guidance, and being there for them. But also you need to learn how to manage through some very difficult personal situations.● If you have a team of people who think you will fail, your organization's going to fail. Opening up the future is what new virtual -reality-based educational program We Are VR Leaders is all about. We Are VR Leaders Founder Howard Robinson created the program to engage students and increase retention. Most importantly, though, We Are VR Leaders provides underserved students with access to a wider variety of learning opportunities, Howard, who is an educator, technologist and thought leader, is also the Founder and President of Gaming for Greatness. For Howard, his leadership journey began during his own academic career. As one of the top students in his South Side Chicago high school, he frequently guided classmates in their studies. And during his college career, one of his teaching positions was as a computer-science instructor for students in South Africa. Today, he uses cutting-edge technology to accomplish his dual missions: education and youth leadership. Virtual reality, Howard says, can transcend some of the obstacles students face, while allowing them to experience future career options. It can also keep them engaged. In fact, Howard says, getting the students to stop interacting with the VR lessons, may just be a challenge! And his new educational program is going to change some lives.. We Are VR Leaders currently lists three different programs on their website. Currently,, the program is set to debut in two different states, for two different types of youth-serving organizations. But Howard says that's just the beginning. Howard shared the story of creating We Are VR Leaders, talked about some of his favorite experiences with the program and offered a preview of what could be next! On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: How Howard first became inspired to become a leader in education and technology; A creative lesson from a unique past experience as an educator which he currently uses in his work with We Are VR Leaders; How Howard first realized the educational potential of VR; The story of We Are VR Leaders; A timeline for the (scheduled) implementation of the program in a school system; His advice for organizations on successfully implementing programs for underserved communities; How to find out more about implementing the program for your school or organization; A closer look at some of the curricula students will experience through We Are VR Leaders; One of the best lessons Howard has learned as an educator, from his work with his new program; An exciting development that's coming in the very near future!; Howard's vision for We Are VR Leaders; A look at the Art Therapy curriculum which Howard is currently developing in collaboration with nonprofit Smile Honey Child;; One of the reactions Howard enjoyed most, when introducing newcomers to virtual reality; How you can support the program, if you'd like to help!: Howard's go-to implement to extend his reach, as a VR educator.
In today's episode, our topic is leadership development in honor of our mentor Howard T. Prince II, a pioneer in leadership education, who passed away last year. We reflect on Howard's life and contribution to our understanding of leadership. We talk about three myths that Howard disrupted, about his life in the army and in academia, and what a great person he was to know. Howard was a leader who created thousands of other leaders—a light to many candles. He is deeply missed. Episode Highlights The crucial difference between experience, reflection, and wisdom Building better organizations Leaving a personal legacy Timestamps [04:00] Understanding the tragedy of psychology [10:25] Howard's contribution to integrating women into the US Military Academy [23:54] Three important leadership skills—Intelligence (IQ), Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Interpersonal Communication Skills [28:49] 3 myths about leadership [32:16] Transforming toxic organizations into ethical ones [41:48] How Howard got woke in 1970 Standout Quotes from the Episode: "The tragedy of psychology is that people want to change. But they don't reflect enough on the limitations between what they're doing and what they want in order to know how to change. Without reflection, you can't convert experience into wisdom. Without wisdom, you're going to be the same person day in and day out, year in year out.” "When somebody is yelling at you, the only thing you want is to make it end. You'll do anything to make it end, but you're not learning. You're just trying to extinguish whatever that threat is." “It's ethics if it hurts.” - Howard Prince About Howard T. Prince, II: Howard Prince was a 1962 Honor Graduate of West Point who served with distinction as an infantry officer in Vietnam. After sustaining grievous wounds during the battle of Hue, Howard rehabilitated at Walter Reed, and then completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. Howard was assigned as the cadet psychologist at West Point and was then promoted to be the founding department head of West Point's Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. In 1990, Howard retired from the Army (and was advanced on the retirement roles to Brigadier General) and became the founding dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond (in Virginia). In 2001, Howard “retired” to Texas, where he was promptly installed as the Director of the Center for Ethical Leadership in the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. He was given West Point's highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Graduate Award, in 2006. Episode Resources: Prince, H.T., Tumlin, G.R., and Stacey L. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for EPISODE #158 with a return of our popular guest, expert in psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neurotechnology, Dr. Howard Rankin from episodes #146[i] and #152[ii] with Grant Renier, who started his venture into ‘Intuitive Rationality'[iii] 30 years before Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman published his groundbreaking book, Thinking, Fast and Slow[iv] creating a company that uses Intuitive General Intelligence (a knock off term like Artificial Intelligence) to predict near and future events, while taking into account the fundamentals of human behavior. So basically, he has created a predictive technology that can peer into the future of sports predictions, health and medicine. Watch the interview on YouTube here. Learn more about Grant Renier and Dr. Howard Rankin's artificial intelligence system https://intualityai.com/ See past episodes here https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/ In Today's Episode, you will learn: ✔︎ How to Improve Our Strategic Decision-Making Process with the Most Common Cognitive Biases in Mind. ✔︎ How Grant's AI System (that can be used by anyone) can predict sports wins, medicine and financial markets. ✔︎ How Howard and Grant wrote their book, Intuitive Rationality to explain the future of decision-making, through the lens of Artificial Intelligence. I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, our sports, and workplace environments with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately. Dr. Rankin and Grant Renier will discuss their new book, Intuitive Rationality, that brings to light the fact that humans are not entirely rational but instead are influenced by several factors in arriving at decisions, like subconscious and environmental processes, and a need for emotional comfort and ideological consistency. These are “heuristics” which are defined as “mental shortcuts” designed to reduce the energy involved in critical thinking and complex processing, showing that pure rationality is almost never practical or possible for human beings and that even the most seemingly rational conclusions are at best probabilities based on the currently known data, which would almost certainly change over time. While these notions are not new, they have appeared in a new context, the 21st century where technology is prevalent and social connection has never been greater. These contemporary processes mean that the various ways that people think have never been more important. Understanding cognitive biases is now critical for anyone in being more aware and efficient in not just their own thinking but also that of others. I know that local police departments now train their employees on cognitive bias, so officers are aware of how their thinking impacts their decision-making on the job, and cognitive bias is an important concept for educators to think about in the classroom, as well in any workplace environment for that matter. Which biases and heuristics are programmed into Intuitive Rationality and how are they incorporated? This new book and our interview will answer these questions, as well as demonstrating the proven success of such a system that is a new direction in artificial intelligence logic. Grant and Howard will introduce this fascinating and paradoxical[v] connection between Intuition and Rationality to help us better understand the strategic decision-making process, to understand how and why we make the decisions that we do, how our world is defined by them, and show how this new approach to artificial intelligence can shift its development to a more human behavior-based logic, leading to a new field of AI-Intuitive General Intelligence. I like the sounds of this! Who doesn't want to figure out new ways to improve their thinking, and strategic decision-making with this new understanding while also getting a glimpse of the future? I think this concept could help us to stay one step ahead of the crowd. Let's welcome Dr. Rankin back for a third time to the podcast, and meet the co-author of their new book, Grant Renier and let's see if we can learn the concept of Intuitive Rationality together. Welcome Dr. Rankin and wonderful to meet you, Grant. Q1: For Grant: I'm fascinated with the system you created years before Daniel Kahneman's groundbreaking book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, for many reasons, but mostly because I've always wondered about incorporating “gut feelings” or intuition into our decision-making process. Now that I'm studying practical neuroscience and have spoken to Howard a couple of times now, he's convinced me that there's a problem with the way humans think. Can you explain what is Intuitive Rationality, your intuitive General intelligence system, and how it works (financial markets, sports. Elections and medicine?) taking into the account of human decision-making? 1B: Howard, taking Grant's work into account, and the idea that you have a podcast called How Not to Think[vi], What should we all know about “how we think and make decisions?” Q2: Can you share some of the insights you write about in Chapter 1 about your visit to Walmart that are metaphors to help us to understand “how we think?” Can we talk through each of the examples of human thinking? Dan— “According to Aristotle, all human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsion, habit, reason, passion, and desire.” You mention in your example that you had chosen the long life 100-watt light bulbs with a combination of chance, nature and habit as per Aristotle via Dan. In my studies so far, I have come across Jaak Panksepp[vii], an American neuroscientist who says we have seven networks of emotion in the brain that begin with seeking—we are always looking for something new, and the brain releases dopamine when it finds it. How do we make decisions here? Looking for something new, or choosing what we are used to and like? Maria— “As Buddha says, we are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.” I understand this one, probably from my work with the speaker Bob Proctor who taught me the importance of guarding my thoughts, since our thoughts, feelings and actions control our results/conditions, circumstances, and environment. How important are our thoughts in your opinion and how does our thinking tie into decision-making? Aloysius—As Fyodor Dostoyevsky said, “One may say anything about the history of the world--anything that might enter the most disordered imagination. The only thing one can't say is that it's rational.” What role does our imagination play with decision making? Crystal —Sigmund Freud said “unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.” We could talk about this one for a week!! A month…maybe a year!! Before I start this one, I wonder, when making decisions, how can we keep emotions out of this process? Andrea's Thoughts: I've uncovered that Research shows that “emotion has a substantial influence on the cognitive processes in humans including perception, attention, learning, memory, reasoning and problem solving.”[viii] This happens because our amygdala “is activated by emotional events. The amygdala boosts memory encoding by enhancing attention and perception and can help memory retention by triggering the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, to boost arousal.”[ix] How can we keep our emotions out of decision-making, or when can we become aware of how they are impacting our decisions? Q2B: How can you predict sports wins? What data is pulled? Maggie—“as Daniel Kahneman says, ‘We are very influenced by completely automatic things that we have no control over, and we don't know we're doing it.'” Dr. Carolyn Leaf on our interview in March of this year told me that our emotions show up in our behavior, and often times when we have a behavior we don't like, we can just take some time to identify the emotion attached to the behavior (or the root cause) that remains unforgotten in the non-conscious mind from something that happened to you in your childhood and making the connection between the emotion and the behavior explain why you are doing something “without control.” Is that what this means? Q3: It wasn't even 2 seconds into chapter 3 (A Starbucks Encounter) where you meet Sherlock Holmes for coffee (which sounded like an incredible idea) where he introduces risk aversion bias, confirmation bias, and availability bias. I have seen a list of the top 50 cognitive biases[x] but how many are you aware of, and how is it possible that we check ourselves against these biases during decision-making? Q4: Can you explain a few of the most important of the 12 core cognitive biases in Intuitive Rationality? (Availability, anchoring, confirmation, symmetry, risk-avoidance, memory decay)? Q5: How do these cognitive biases fit into AI and how would a system like what Grant has developed take into consideration Theory of Mind, or respond to different human cues like emotions? Q6: What should we all take away from Intuitive Rationality? I want to thank you both for your time today, and for explaining Intuitive Rationality to me and the listeners. I know these lessons and ideas will help us all to think clearly, and take a bit more time with our decision-making process. Today, Maria shines the light on the change in education that often occurs unnoticed through initiatives teachers lead in their classrooms. She shares the stories of three high school teachers who teach different subjects from history to English, physics and chemistry but do have one thing in common: They want to help their students build skills that are rarely developed through the traditional curriculum, or they are developed in ways that students don’t find engaging. Under their respective circumstances and in their own ways, these three teachers decided to lead initiatives and create new experiences for their students. In doing so, they expanded or replaced the standard curriculum in their classrooms. Listen to these inspiring stories and Maria’s reflections to help you make education better, one classroom at a time. The most successful investors combine a profound analytical understanding of financial markets and the economy at large with the ability to act on those ideas. My guest today has these two attributes in spades. Today’s conversation is with Howard Marks, the Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, which is one of the largest credit investors in the world and certainly the largest investor in distressed securities. Howard started his career at Citicorp as an equity research analyst and then Director of Research, Vice President, and Senior Portfolio Manager overseeing convertible and high yield debt. After leaving Citicorp, he moved to The TCW Group, where once again, he was responsible for investments in distressed debt, high yield bonds, and convertible securities. In 1995 he and another group of partners from TCW founded Oaktree, where he remains today. Howard is known for his penetrating mind and his memos are a must-read for any serious student of the market and I can’t think of anyone better than him to discuss the many complexities of markets and the economy of today. On this episode, Howard and I discuss how he ended up in the high yields space, why running research at Citicorp was a low point in his career, the concept of “efficientization”, why Graham and Dodd called bond investing a negative art, why complexity and early adoption are your friends, the dominant challenge for investors today, Howard’s prolific writing, and so much more! Key Topics: Howard’s early life from working adding machines in an accounting office to studying finance at university (3:30) How Howard ended up working at Citicorp for his first job out of school (5:39) Why running research at Citicorp was an extremely unsatisfactory role for Howard (7:25) Howard’s involuntary transition from analyst into the high yield space (9:01) The big difference between the market being efficient and being right (11:37) The concept of “efficientization” (13:14) Two main causes of mistakes in the market? (14:04) Howard’s holy grail in investing (15:12) Why Howard doesn’t use macro forecasting in his decision making (17:24) The dawn of the high yield bond era (18:55) Different approaches to the analysis of equities versus high yield bonds (20:07) Why Graham and Dodd called bond investing a negative art (21:03) Howard’s early days at The TCW Group (23:18) Complexity and early adoption as an investor’s friends (24:53) Why you must work at a firm that is in alignment with your investment philosophy (28:05) Howard’s love for writing (31:49) Using memos to shape the company culture (33:30) Why you should analyze your winners (34:47) The “I know” school versus the “I don’t know” school (36:01) The dominant challenge for investors today (38:46) What Howard thinks is behind consistently low yields (42:13) What surprises me about the politics of populism and financial markets (46:43) The rise of populism as a response to the shifting beliefs of the working class (48:16) And much more! In Episode 124, we welcome legendary investor, Howard Marks. Meb begins with a quote from Howard’s new book, Mastering the Market Cycle, and asks him to expound. Howard gives us his top-line take on market cycles, ending with the idea that if you understand them, you can profit from them. Meb follows up by asking about Howard’s framework for evaluating where we are in the cycle. Rather than look at every input as individual, Howard looks at overall patterns. What is the collective mood? Or is it depressed, sad, and people don’t want to buy? Or is it buoyant? Second, are investors optimistic and thrilled with their portfolios and eager to add more, therein increasing risk? Or are investors regretful and hesitant, burned by recent experience? Then there are quantitative aspects – valuations, yield spreads, cap rates, multiples, and so on. All of these variables help give Howard a feel for whether assets are high- or low-priced. Next, Meb asks Howard to use Oaktree’s actions during the Financial Crisis as a real-world example of how an investor could act upon cycles. Howard tells us there are two parts to what happened during the Crisis – what Oaktree did during the run-up to the meltdown, and then what it did during the event itself. In short, Oaktree was cautious during the lead-up. They raised their standards for investments. Why? Howard notes that they didn’t know ahead of time how bad things would be. Rather, they were hesitant because they looked at the securities being issued, and it seemed that every day, something was coming out that didn’t deserve to be issued. This was a tip-off. Then the event happened, culminating in Lehman bankruptcy, and that’s when Oaktree became very aggressive, buying half a billion dollars each week for 15 weeks. Howard tells us that, yes, our job as investors is to be skeptical, but sometimes that skepticism needs to be applied to our own fears. In other words, skepticism also might appear like “no, that scenario is too bad to actually be true.” Meb notes that the challenge is investors want precision, picking the exact top and bottom. But this isn’t really how it works. Meb asks if there a time when Howard felt he misinterpreted a point in the market cycle. Before answering Meb’s questions, Howard agrees that trying to find the bottom or top is a huge mistake. He notes that trying to find the perfect day upon which to buy or sell is impossible. In terms of potentially misreading the cycle, Howard tells us that Oaktree has been perhaps too conservative over the last few years, so they haven’t realized all the gains of the market. That said, he stands by his decision telling us, “anybody who buys or holds because of the belief that something that’s fully valued will become overvalued…is embarking on a dangerous course.” Meb asks how Howard sees the world today. Howard tells us we’re in the 8th inning of this bull market. Assets are highly priced relative to history. People are bullish. Risk aversion is low. He notes it’s a time for caution – but – we have no idea how many innings there will be in this game. What follows is a great conversation about bull markets, what ends bull markets, and how to implement market cycles into an investment approach. The guys touch on investor exuberance… whether markets need to be exuberant for a bull market to end… bullish action despite bullish temperament… the need to “calibrate” your portfolio… and the average investor’s ability to live with pain. There’s so much more in this episode: How Howard’s market approach has evolved over the years… how “it’s not what you buy, it’s what you pay for it that determines whether something is a good investment or bad investment”… Howard’s thoughts on contrarian investing… and, of course, his most memorable trade. This one yielded him 23x. What are the details? Find out in Episode 124.
