In September of 2011, a morbid saga began to play out in a suburb of Boston named Waltham. The bodies of 37-year-old Raphael "Rafi" Teken, 31-year-old Erik Weissman, and 25-year-old Brendan Mess were found in Brendan's second-story apartment. The specific circumstances of their deaths pointed to a vicious killer with personal motives, and robbery was immediately ruled out as a potential motive. The case quickly went cold, but attention would be drawn to it more than a year later, when one of the largest acts of terrorism in American history began to unfold in neighboring Boston... On the evening of December 30th, 2000, a family home in Tokyo's Setagaya district would become a house of horrors.Mikio and Yasuko Miyazawa had moved to the home more than 10 years prior, back in 1990, and decided to start their family there. In the years since, they had introduced a daughter (Niina) and a son (Rei) to the world, and comfortably lived next door to some of Yasuko's family members. But it was on the morning of New Years Eve 2000 that Yasuko's mother would attempt to reach the family. First my phone, and then at the couple's front door. When she entered the home using her key, she was unprepared to find the carnage that awaited her...I originally covered the Miyazawa's story back in 2016. 17 years ago, two lives were lost in a tragic holiday shooting in Tacoma, Washington. On November 28th, 2002, the paths of 19-year-old Kimberly Riley and 5-year-old Jeremy Britt-Bayinthavong would converge at a house in Tacoma's South End. Jeremy was the grandson of the homeowners, who were hosting a large Thanksgiving party, while Kimberly (an out-of-state student attending the University of Washington) was a family friend. As the evening began to die down, a shooter would open fire into the home's windows, shooting Kimberly and Jeremy (alongside two others). Both would eventually succumb to their injuries, and the shooting remains unsolved almost two decades later. In 2008, an unknown gunman would commit one of the few unsolved mass shootings in U.S. history. February 2nd of that year was a cold and blustery day in the region of Tinley Park, Illinois. That morning, two Lane Bryant employees and four customers would be taken captive by an armed gunman just after the store opened. The gunman, who posed as a delivery man, would loiter in the store for upwards of 40 minutes, before shooting the six female hostages and making off with a little more than $200. Despite the involvement of national and international law enforcement agencies, the killer's identity - and motives - remain a mystery to this day. A mysterious death at the South Pole would spark a nearly decade-long international investigation.Rodney Marks was a 32-year-old astrophysicist, who worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. There, he had been working on a project to help map the stars, and not only did he take great pride and enjoyment in his work, but he also enjoyed the isolated culture down at the South Pole - where he would live for months at a time.On May 11th, 2000, Rodney began to complain of illness. Over the next 36 hours, his symptoms would progress to the point of no return, and the following evening, he would pass away due to total heart failure. Because the South Pole was so isolated, an autopsy could not be performed until months later. But when his remains were examined by a coroner later that year, the results were shocking... In April of 1981, a violent crime would tear apart a quiet town in northern California.Keddie is a small town in the Sierra Nevada mountains, located roughly halfway between Redding and Reno. Originally established as a stop along the railroad, the area was in the middle of a total transition when the Sharp family moved there in the latter half of 1980. On the morning of April 11th, 1981, 14-year-old Sheila Sharp was returning from a neighbor's house following a sleepover. That was when she discovered the gruesome crime scene that had been left behind... and the vile mystery that would haunt her (and the rest of Keddie) for the next four decades... In the early morning hours of November 25th, 2010, the bodies of two teenage girls would be found in an abandoned lot in Augusta, Georgia. 19-year-old Angela Brooks and 17-year-old Nancy Cushman had become fast friends, growing incredibly close through 2010. While they both lived a few miles north (up in South Carolina), they had close ties to Augusta and its surrounding area. The discovery of the teenage girls' bodies early on Thanksgiving morning prompted a widespread canvas and high-profile investigation, but public interest would quickly fade. Through the latter half of the 1830's, an urban legend began to take shape on the rooftops and in the foggy alleyways of London.First came rumors of an entity named "Steel Jack," who assaulted people (primarily women) in the dark of night. Over time, though, the rumors began to evolve, with the shadowy figure assaulting men and women alike throughout all of England, and engaging in physical feats deemed inhuman. Decades later, the myth of "Spring-Heeled Jack" continued to live on, with the entity making appearances at-random. Skeptics remain assured that this bogeyman was a total fabrication, while others theorize that the rumors evolved from a place of truth... The enigmatic Shadow Brokers, who seemingly disappeared in January of 2017, would break their silence just three months later.Following the destruction of a Syrian airbase in April 2017, the Shadow Brokers returned to continue their campaign of cyber-terror. They lashed out at President Trump (and others) in deranged posts online, and began to leak more exploits and tools allegedly stolen from the NSA's most secretive units. This time, however, the intelligence they leaked would go on to have devastating effects in the real world. Many of these exploits would go on to be utilized by cyber-criminal and hackers, and the chaos they created would cost billions of dollars in recovery efforts all around the globe... In August of 2016, a mysterious hacker collective began releasing files and folders stolen directly from the NSA.Many of the programs this person or group released appeared to be legitimate cyber-weapons, which had been developed by U.S. intelligence. Despite the audaciousness of their posts - which became more immature and unhinged as time went on - the files they released seemed to have come directly from an NSA server. A leak of this magnitude had never been seen before, and the cyber-intel community struggled to stop the bleeding. But over the next several months, the Shadow Brokers would continue to wage a one-sided campaign against their sworn enemy: a secretive branch of the NSA nicknamed the "Equation Group"... In the decade since eleven bodies were found in Albuquerque, a task force has worked to identify the mysterious West Mesa Bone Collector. The 118th Street Task Force is a combination of officers from Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and the FBI. Together, they have worked exhaustively to identify and apprehend the unknown killer of eleven women, who murdered and buried them over a roughly two-year period between 2003 and 2005. Over the past ten years, detectives have thoroughly investigated numerous suspects (including two that are still suspected of involvement today), looked into thousands of tips, and have even tentatively tied other missing women to the same crime spree. Yet, despite their best intentions, police have been unable to close the case dubbed the "118th Street Homicides." Through 2009, police would continue to unearth a mass grave along the western edge of Albuquerque. Following the discovery of eleven female bodies, investigators set out to identify the remains. The first four victims - Victoria Chavez, Michelle Valdez, Cinnamon Elks, and Julie Nieto - would be identified within the first month or so. They were all young women that had lived in the region and had gone missing between 2004 and 2005 (who had prior histories of sex work and drug use). However, the remaining seven victims would be much harder to ID. It took several months for investigators to piece together the details of these women's tragic lives, but the exact circumstances of their disappearances/murders would be hard to grasp. Years later, police continue to have many questions about these women, and who had targeted them... On February 2nd, 2009, a woman walking her dog would stumble upon the largest crime scene in Albuquerque history. In the years prior, this once-desolate corner of ABQ had been ground zero for rapid expansion. Housing developments had been popping up left and right, but the 2008 recession caused a vast amount of land to remain undeveloped: in particular, a roughly 100-acre lot located just west of 118th Street. While out on an evening stroll, a woman's dog would unearth a human bone. Before long, police had begun excavating what would be the largest crime scene in Albuquerque history. Within a month, they had identified four of the victims (all were sex workers that had gone missing years prior) but several more remained unidentified... as did their collective killer... In July of 1974, a young college student from Memphis State University was sentenced to 40 years in state prison for his involvement in an illegal narcotics ring. Larry Chism was a bright, unassuming young man who was nearing his graduation from law school when he was arrested and thrown into prison... a sentence that many assumed would consume a large chunk of his life. However, Larry had other plans. This sentence was merely a setback for him. Between September and December of 1978, Larry would cook up two separate escape attempts: one from state prison, and another from a county jail (as he await sentencing). In the 40+ years since, federal investigators have nearly caught up to Chism on multiple occasions, but he has managed to elude them at each turn. In the summer of 2004, an 18-year-old moved back to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She had actually grown up in Tulsa and gone to high school there, but had moved away the year prior to attend college. Having become homesick, the following Spring she made the decision to move back to Oklahoma and attend school there, in order to be closer to her friends and family. It was a decision that her friends and family welcomed at the time, as it meant that she would be a constant presence in their lives once again.Unfortunately, it was this decision - to move back home - which put this young woman in the sights of a killer. Close to fifteen years after her violent death, her loved ones - primarily her mother - continue to fight for justice, as her killer has never been identified, and her case remains as unsolved today as it was back in the Fall of 2004...Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal Whelan Special thanks to Dr. Maggie Zingman (Brittany's mother) for speaking to me, and an additional thank you to Lindsay Schraad for getting us in-touch. In December of 2016, a home invasion turned violent in South Ogden, Utah. 24-year-old Cyle Van Komen lived in a home along the 3600 block of Ogden Avenue, along with a handful of young roommates. On the evening of December 9th, 2016, a couple of these roommates stepped out for a few minutes, just as 61-year-old neighbor Kevin Nelson stopped by for a quick visit.Within ten minutes, all hell would break loose inside the house. A group of masked individuals had been watching the house from afar, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Unbeknownst to them, they had been captured by a neighbor's surveillance footage, but their motives - and identities - remain unknown to this day...Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanProducers: Maggyjames, Ben Krokum, Robert Janson, Quil Carter, Peggy Belarde, Matthew Brock, Laura Hannan, Astrid Kneier, Evan White, Katherine Vatalaro, Damion Moore, Amy Hampton Miller, Timothy Stratton, Scott Meesey, Steven Wilson, Sara Willemsen, Scott Patzold, Kathy Marie, and Marie VanglundLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.me/ If you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerMusic CreditsDream Machine - "Radiant" (https://icons8.com/music/author/dream-machine)Acedis - "Illustrations" (https://icons8.com/music/author/acedis)Dmitriy Diomores - "Criminal Soul" (https://icons8.com/music/author/dmitriy-diomores)Vheissu - "Once, Angel Touched the Ground" https://icons8.com/music/author/vheissu)Dream Machine - "Soliloquy" (https://icons8.com/music/author/dream-machine)Murkok - "All Winter in a Day" (https://icons8.com/music/author/murkok)Vermos - "Sea In Me" (https://icons8.com/music/author/vermos)Other music created & composed by Ailsa Traves
