Cyle Warner is a Brooklyn-based artist of Afro-Caribbean descent. A recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Photography, he works across mediums, often using fabric and photographs inherited from family to explore his concept of Dis. In 2022 he attended the prestigious Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art. Welancora Gallery is proud to present Weh Dem? De Sparrow Catcher?, a solo exhibition of new work by Cyle Warner (b. 2001), on view from July 27 to October 10, 2023. Warner's first exhibition at the gallery brings together a reimagined archive of photographs and textiles to reveal a very personal exploration of his family's life in the Caribbean. Sourced from the Warner family archive, the photographs are layered, recomposed and enlarged to conjure feelings of curiosity about Warner's elders and their life in the Caribbean. The works on view raise a number of questions; namely, what would life be like if there had been no migration to the United States? The photos, ranging from the mid 1940s to the early to mid 1970s, depict family members when they were permanently residing in the Caribbean. The hazy quality and sepia tones, as well as what's visible, what's further highlighted, and what's left to be desired all lend themselves to the artist's fractured understanding of a time in the Caribbean that he never experienced first hand. Today, I'm flashing back to an Instagram live that was recorded last year with Maggie Nick, LCSW, MSW @maggiewithperspectacles. Maggie is a licensed trauma therapist and parenting expert. Founder of parenting with perspectacles. She helps parents “reparent” themselves & has a “revolutionary approach to healing low self worth” by help[ing] you understand yourself on a profound healing level so you can be the parent you needed to your inner child, & your [current] child, if you're a parent”. Her content and basically everything she says resonates with me & she has been such an amazing encouragement and practical help in my motherhood journey, so I was thrilled when she said she could come on the show! We chat about something Maggie calls “the gameface mama”, when we are white knuckling our way through, trying harder, we're overstimulated, & seemingly can't come up for air. Do you relate? I certainly do! Maggie walks us through how she came to a point in her life when she said no more. She refused to live that way anymore and she talks to us about how we can put our Perspectacles on, get compassionate and  curious about our triggers and feelings (and our children's), accept all the different parts of us, tangible ways we can regulate ourselves in times of stress and frustration, & widen our capacity so we can gain compassion. It was such a gem of a conversation & one I constantly need to come back to. Maggie has amazing content on her Instagram feed & parenting courses that I highly recommend. So head on over & check her out. She also has a Facebook Group Community! Here's a LINK to all her goodness!

The previous episode shared research and evidence that giving our children a better story—a bigger story of Christianity—would help them have a faith that lasts. Talking about our “story” is trendy, we see it and hear it often, but what truly makes a story great. To breakdown this idea of giving a better story, Jake invited his literary agent, Cyle Young, on to talk about what makes a great story. Leaning into Cyle's knowledge in the writing world as an author and one of the leading agents in the business, we are able to dissect how to guide our children into a deeper following of Christ. Cyle surprises Jake with his answer, which not only throws Jake off in the interview, but reshapes the entire coming season of Stand Firm Parents. Stand Firm Parents is a resource from Stand Firm led by pastor and author Stand Firm Jake, Jake McCandless, who has been on a journey the past ten years to help believers around the globe hold on to their faith—to stand firm. Does this ever happen to you?  You try to change your eating habits in order to be "healthier."  Or to lose weight.  Or to feel more "in control" of your eating.  Whatever the reason, you start counting calories or you cut out entire food groups.  Or maybe you try to add more "good" foods into your eating pattern.  Or maybe you do all of those things, and you decide to hit the gym four times a week. And you maintain those behaviors.  For awhile anyway.  Maybe for a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or even a couple of years. But then one day..... You backslide.  Maybe it starts with a "cheat meal" that turns into another "cheat meal" or an entire "cheat day."  And that turns into a week, a month, or a few years.  Or maybe one day you just say "I can't do this any more!!!"  And you eat all of the things that you've forbidden for the past however long.  Or maybe you just decide that you can "safely" add the foods back that you had cut out but somehow that turns into a giant free-for-all. And that giant free-for-all might last for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months.   So then what do you do?  You try your hardest to get back on that diet.  To count those calories, cut out those food groups, and add that kale back in.  And that might last for a bit, or even awhile.  But then it all comes crashing down again. This is what we call the Restrict/Binge Cycle. The Restrict/Binge Cycle is exactly what it sounds like:  a pattern of eating behavior that moves from dieting/restricting to bingeing/overeating.  Now, you don't have to be formally dieting or meet diagnostic criteria for binge eating to be engaged in this pattern.  It may be less extreme for you.  Maybe for you, it looks like: Cutting out one food group and then finding yourself buying multiple items from that food group at your next trip to the grocery store Deciding to eat more fruits and vegetables but after a week or so realizing that you haven't had so much as a carrot stick over the past three days Promising yourself that you won't turn to Ben & Jerry's when you're having a bad day but then grabbing the Oreos instead Or maybe you truly do severely restrict your food intake and then eventually binge to the point of discomfort.  Whatever this cycle looks like for you, many of us get caught up in this pattern.   Within the framework of IFS, we call this cycle a polarization. Polarizations occur when two parts or two groups of parts oppose or compete with each other. It's like the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Both parts or groups of parts have their own agenda, and they fear that the other side will take over.  So each side has to get louder and more extreme in order to take control. In the case of the Restrict/Binge Cycle, we have one group of parts that feels the need to diet for whatever reason, and another group of parts that wants to use food for comfort, distraction, and/or numbing, and that doesn't want you to deprive yourself. Both groups are trying to help and protect you, but they have very different views of what that looks like and very different ways of going about it. So they become locked in a polarization, with each side getting louder and louder the longer this goes on. In this week's podcast we're doing a deep dive into the Restrict/Binge Cycle through the lens of IFS and polarizations.  We're taking a close look at why polarizations occur, how they lead to this cycle, and what to do about them.  We talk about the concept of backlash and how this explains why diets never work.  This is an episode that I think will give you a lo of "aha moments," so take a listen!
