In the first Sunday Show of 2025, Neil de Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement (UIM), comments on the opening moves of 2025 by politicians like President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vice President Paul Mashatile, former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and US President-Elect Donald Trump. Dissecting President Ramaphosa's speech this weekend, De Beer concludes that “the ANC is starting to face reality - and stark reality”. He slams Vice President Mashatile's “absolute idiotic move” to accuse the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape of having no regard for the poor while standing in front of a rubbish heap in an ANC's councillor's ward. De Beer, who is also a Councillor in the City of Cape Town, describes how the City sometimes has to send the police to escort its rubbish trucks. De Beer weighs in on the big loss to the EFF of the “great mind” of Dr. Ndlozi who was “the wind that was carrying the EFF air” in Parliament. De Beer also marvels at US President-Elect Donald Trump's survival of yet another legal challenge to head for his second inauguration - and warns that South Africa's Government of National Unity (GNU) should notbe surprised if America said “we do not like your stance in the Middle East and we do not like what you have done - and you will have pressure from us to change your attitude”.

Former EFF MP and KZN leader Vusi Khoza says EFF MP Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi will be removed from Parliament before the State of the Nation Address (SONA) next year. This prediction comes on the heels of Khoza's own expulsion from the party for allegedly failing to organize transportation for supporters to attend the EFF's 10th-anniversary celebration. According to Khoza, Ndlozi's removal is imminent due to his alleged absence from the party's conference. This assertion is bolstered by EFF leader Julius Malema's recent remarks, in which he stated that anyone that was absent from the party's elective conference cannot be considered a leader. Mr. Khoza spoke to Elvis Presslin to elaborate further on his sentiments

The silence of popular EFF members during former deputy leader Floyd Shivambu's resignation has irritated party leader Julius Malema. Malema read a section of the party's constitution which obliges members not to be silent when the organisation is being “attacked”. Malema's rant comes after Shivambu defected to Jacob Zuma's MK Party. Shivambu and MP Mzwanele Manyi resigned last week. It's expected that other party members could also leave. Leaders who are usually vocal but who have been silent about the latest developments since Shivambu's departure include Dali Mpofu, who is associated with Zuma as his advocate, and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. There have been rumours that they are among those who intend to leave the EFF.

The EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndozi says his party's friend, MK Party leader Jacob Zuma, must go home and rest because he had his chance in government for two decades. Ndlozi asked what the former president would do now that he could not do while he was president. Zuma was president from 2009 to 2018 in what critics have dubbed "the nine wasted years". He is planning to return to government as president to “fix things” and drastically change South African laws. They could be homophobic. Zuma has questioned the legalisation of same-sex relationships, referring to it as a disgrace. He would exile teen parents to Robben Island. Every matriculant would go to university to join the army. Those are some of the rules he proposes if elected. EFF leader Julius Malema had said they welcome Zuma into the political space, warning him of challenges of forming a political party. The EFF were strong critics of Zuma during his tenure as president when corruption allegations regarding his Nkandla homestead came to the fore. That was until Malema had a tea party with Zuma in 2021. Election analysts such as Dawie Scholtz and Wayne Sussman say the EFF has been a victim of the MK Party, losing voters to it.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and the party's top brass will have to apologise to President Cyril Ramaphosa, give up a month's salary, and will not be allowed to attend the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) next year as punishment for storming the stage during the president's address this year. On Wednesday, Parliament's Powers and Privileges Committee deliberated on the sanctions for Malema, EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, the party's secretary-general Marshall Dlamini, Vuyani Pambo, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, and spokesperson Sinawo Thambo, after the six were found guilty of contempt of Parliament. During this year's SoNA on 9 February, EFF MPs started raising several points of order and National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula ordered them to leave the chamber. As they walked out, some of them stormed the stage, prompting an instant reaction from heavily armed police. All the African National Congress (ANC) MPs agreed that the six should apologise and be docked a month's salary. The Democratic Alliance (DA) wanted the affected MPs to be suspended for the month of February. Advocate Anton Katz SC, the initiator appointed by Parliament, recommended that the MPs be suspended with effect from 6 February 2024 to 16 February 2024. This means that they will miss SoNA next year, which will be held on 8 February. DA MP Annelie Lotriet proposed that the suspension be for a month, and not 10 days as suggested by Katz. Sanctions She also cautioned the committee to clarify how exactly the apology should read. This suggestion was supported by the ANC. "I have been a member of this committee since 2014. I have to be honest that just giving a fine does not have the desired effect. I would propose that, given the type of behaviour that we witnessed, we combine the apologies with a fine and impose a suspension on those members for a period of a month," Lotriet said. The ANC, which enjoys the majority on the committee, didn't seem to be in favour of the suspension. ANC MP Doris Dlakude proposed a docking of salaries and a public apology. This was also supported by other ANC MPs on the committee. "I think the apology and the one-month salary dock will be a better sanction," she said. But after deliberations behind closed doors, committee chairperson Violet Siwela said all the affected MPs would apologise for their actions and be suspended. "The penalty with respect to Mr Malema is an order to apologise to Parliament, the President and the people of South Africa in terms of Section 12, sub section 5 (C) physically in person in the House. Another order is the suspension of the member without remuneration for a month starting from 1 February to 29 February 2024 in terms of Section 12 subsection 5 (G) and read with sub section 9," she said. The same sanctions will apply to the other five MPs. According to Chapter 4, Section 12 (G) of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliaments and Provincial Legislatures Act, 2004, a member may be suspended, with or without remuneration, for a period not exceeding 30 days, whether or not the House or any of its committees is scheduled to meet during that period. Section 10 of the act stipulated that a member who has been suspended under subsection 5 (G) must leave the precincts, and may not, during the period of suspension, without the written permission of the Speaker or the Chairperson enter the precincts for whatever purpose or participate in any activity of Parliament or any committee. These and other provisions of Section 12 are used in disciplinary action against members for contempt. 'We're innocent' Meanwhile, Malema wrote to the committee explaining their conduct on the night of 9 February. In his submission, on behalf of all the effected MPs, he said: The sole evidence relied upon is video evidence. It has not been authenticated in any manner. And it is clear that it presents a slanted picture and does not show the entire proceedings. It could only have been so sl...
The committee investigating the conduct of EFF MPs who stormed the stage in parliament during the state of the nation address (Sona) in February wants the party members to apologise, be banned from parliament and not receive their salaries. If the recommendations succeed, EFF leader Julius Malema, deputy leader Floyd Shivambu, secretary-general Marshall Dlamini, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Vuyani Pambo and spokesperson Sinawo Tambo will not get, at most, a month's salary. They stormed the stage earlier this year while President Cyril Ramaphosa was delivering the address.
Suspend EFF members who disrupted the state of the nation address (Sona) in February because they do not take it seriously, initiator Anton Katz SC told a parliamentary hearing. He suggested they be suspended from 6th of February 2024 to 16th February 2024. The EFF members are leader Julius Malema, deputy leader Floyd Shivambu, secretary-general Marshall Dlamini, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Vuyani Pambo and spokesperson Sinawo Tambo. Katz submitted they should be found guilty of violating National Assembly rules and should apologise to President Cyril Ramaphosa. The hearing started on Monday. The members and their legal counsel walked out of proceedings yesterday when the committee rejected their applications to appoint a judge to hear the proceedings and asked for these to be postponed to January next year. The MPs were represented by advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi.
This week on Sunday Times Politics Weekly we delve into the controversial legacy of IFP founder and prime minister to the Zulu nation Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who died at the weekend at the age of 95. Buthelezi's legacy has been the centre of debate in recent days after his passing, with some labelling him a “warmonger”, a catalyst for violence and a prop or ally of the apartheid government. On the other hand, his defenders have labelled him an iconic political figure and a struggle icon. The EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, speaking during a memorial service held in Buthelezi's honour in Ulundi on Wednesday, said he was “a man of peace”. Our host, deputy editor of the Sunday Times Mike Siluma, is joined by Dr Bongani Ngqulunga, academic, author and director of the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Johannesburg, and academic researcher and violence monitor Mary de Haas. They assess the complexities of Buthelezi's story, his role in the violent past of South Africa, the fairness of this depiction and the impact this played on his political mileage. They also unpack his relationship with the apartheid government, and between the IFP with ANC then and going forward. Sunday Times Politics Weekly is a TimesLIVE production.
