If ever I had a kindred spirit, Kathryn McRitchie is it. We met in a class I was teaching at Stanford University one summer, Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching for Social Studies. She walked in with her “Moms Demand Action” tote bag and said good morning to me with her Tennessee accent; to say she had me at hello is just the truth. Since then we've remained in touch, developing a friendship grounded in the love of our kids (and of story corps, truth be told) and a deep passion for both the art and the science of teaching. Kat's joy is endearing, quirky, and delightful. She is unabashedly curious and allows that curiosity to lead her anywhere it wants to, even if it makes people think she's a little nuts. She is a little nuts, just like we all are, and part of what makes her so special is that she doesn't wear the cloak of cool to pretend otherwise. She's exceptionally smart, super witty, deeply faithful, and among the most nurturing people I know. It was my great fortune to gain such a great colleague as she walked into my classroom that summer morning years ago, and it's my great privilege, now, to call her friend.
Hatebreed drummer Matt Byrne joins the show for the first time to talk about turning what he thought would be a onetime summer tour into a twenty plus year career, his love of Poughkeepsie, creating his own beer during lockdown, and why playing with Dimebag Darrell and opening for Tiffany was equally thrilling. It's a fun one! Listen in!
Jim McRitchie, corporate governance advocate, publisher of CorpGov.net and rebel with a cause talks to Jon about growing up in a segregated, sexist, economically isolated bubble, wealth inequality and how he and a small group of passionate, like-minded gadflies are changing corporate America one shareholder proposal at a time.
In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Folami Ideraabdullah from the University of Chapel Hill to talk about her work on the environmental modulation of the epigenome during development. The lab of Folami Ideraabdullah focuses on studying how environmental factors modulate the epigenome. In particular the team investigates how Vitamin D levels influence epigenetic processes and, hence, the susceptibility for diseases like adipositas. Folami Ideraabdullah started with a genome-wide screen of DNA Methylation patterns that are observed after Vitamin D depletion. This work was then followed up by investigating the impact of Vitamin D depletion on mouse sperm DNA methylation. References Xue, J., Schoenrock, S. A., Valdar, W., Tarantino, L. The winds of change are blowing in corporate governance. Where will they take us? Time will tell. This week we have a shareholder perspective from a man whose name is well-known in the investor relations offices of many of the most well-known corporations in America. We like to call him a dean of the Shareholder Rights Movement, others like to call him a corporate gadfly. You decide: corporate gadfly or an inside progenitor of the next generation of capitalism. Shareholder Activist, James McRitchie.

So many people that I've spoken with over the years feel stuck where they are simply because they do not have clarity to make a career change. Clarity is one of the most important aspects to personal or business success. The question is, "how do you gain clarity to make a career change?" "Is there a formula that's available for one to use to gain clarity?" These are only a few of the questions that people have when it comes to gaining clarity. It's essential for them to make a career change in alignment with who they are and the skills they possess. In this episode, our guest - Mike McRitchie sheds light on this subject. Here are just a sampling of what you'll hear as you listen to this episode: Find a career that: aligns with your strengths is more meaningful to this stage of your life allows you to learn and grow satisfies your soul Signs you need a career change: everyday is like a Monday your work performance is taking a "beating" you are bored at work your workday seems longer than weekend days feeling lost feeling like you are wasting your life away Why some people remain in a career that's unfulfilling: change is scary you are comfortable fear of the unknown feeling inadequate fear of rejection in new relationships 3-Steps to successful career transition Step 1 - Connect with people who are in the career you are thinking of and have conversations with them Step 2 - Get your financial house in order Step 3 - Get supportive network in place starting with your close family members such as your spouse if you have one Step 4 - Test out the "waters" ... see how you could make a change without major disruptions especially financially Here's a brief bio of Mike McRitchie: Mike is someone who has maintained his sanity through job changes and constant reinvention in the turbulent telecom industry. He's experienced the highest highs of self fulfillment - working for a company that truly cared about its employees. And then the lowest lows as the company he loved came crashing down as the business model became no longer viable - driven by industry change. Over the years he's been both an employee and independent contractor. And he's recently started a part time side hustle resume writing and career coaching business that has connected with his audience and has grown rapidly. He's taken risks early in his career and is doing the same now - 20+ years into his telecom career. To him and his clients, life is a journey that must be experienced. Why waste your life doing your time, waiting for retirement? When you could be creating an impact by pursuing your passions and creating a life of purpose.
