A listener requested this title quite some time ago and it finally happened! Film critic Nell Minow joins Kerry and Collin to talk about this relatively obscure, but wonderful movie that might just be the first ever in the sub-genre of holiday films where the family returns home for the holiday festivities and slowly start airing their grievances and secrets. Do clergymen really enjoy doing the Christmas sermons? Is there a moment in "Love Actually" that is a tribute to this movie? How does director Mike Leight figure into all of this? All the answers to all of these questions, plus an extended "knitability" segment, as well as three more films from "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die." Before any of that, though, you get a chance to win a pair of free movie tickets from the Chicago Critics Film Festival, which runs May 2-8, 2025 at the Music Box Theatre.  Book films covered: "The Wages of Fear" (1953) "Viridiana" (1951) "Secrets & Lies" (1996)

If you've got a 401(k) or invest using Nicole's Index Funds and Chill approach, chances are you're a shareholder in major companies like Berkshire Hathaway or Tesla—and that means you have power. You can vote on who runs these companies, how they operate, and where your money goes. But most of us don't use that power, and while we sit it out, others are stepping in—often to push agendas, not better business. Today, Nicole is joined by Nell Minow—an expert in corporate governance—to break down what shareholder activism should be, what it's becoming, and why your retirement account might be more influential than you think. Oh, and she's also got some thoughts on Tesla and Elon Musk… you won't want to miss it. Inherit the Wind (1960) is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial," where a local teacher is prosecuted for teaching about human evolution in public school in violation of state law. The film was directed by Stanley Kramer and is based on a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. It stars Spencer Tracy as Henry Drummond (patterned after celebrated defense attorney Clarence Darrow), Frederic March as the prosecutor Matthew Harrison Brady (patterned after famous three-time presidential candidate and renowned fundamentalist Christian spokesperson, William Jennings Bryan); Dick York as Bertram T. Cates (patterned after high school science teacher John Scopes), and Gene Kelly as reporter E. K. Hornbeck (patterned after H.L. Mencken). Fans of the TV series M*A*S*H  will also enjoy seeing Harry Morgan as the trial judge. The film not only provides a glimpse into the role of religion in public life in American in the 1920s; it also contains important messages about conformism and freedom of thought directed at the McCarthyism of its own era—messages that continue to reverberate today. This week, I was honored to welcome back my gifted friend and an official friend of the show. William Boyle is the acclaimed novelist of such books as Gravesend, The Lonely Witness, A Friend is a Gift You Give Yourself, City of Margins, and the upcoming Shoot the Moonlight Out.A knowledgeable film buff and a bard of Italian-American New York life, especially in the era he came of age in the 1990s (which I love since we're roughly the same age), in the past, Bill appeared to discuss the career of David Morse along with critic Nell Minow, and stopped by twice last year to chat including once about actor Mickey Rourke. This time, he joined me to discuss five of his favorite underrated, overlooked, and/or largely forgotten Italian-American films, including Fatso (1980), Mac (1992), Household Saints (1993), Angie (1994), and Two Family House (2000). In this delightfully breezy yet reflective chat, we shared some of our own family tales, our thoughts on the movies, and agreed that since we have no idea how to pronounce a few of the gorgeous Italian names, we'd say them multiple ways to ensure we were right at least once. So pull up your chair, prepare and plate some pasta, and enjoy it along with a hearty sauce and this rich conversation.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (8/7/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/54636577

And when it comes to corporate governance, Nell Minow has literally written the book. In fact, she's written several books. Nell has been described in the Financial Times as the “doyenne of the US corporate governance movement”. BusinessWeek has called her the “queen of good corporate governance”. She co-authored the book Power and Accountability with Robert A. Monks, which was hailed as essential reading for anyone interested in corporate governance by legendary management thinker Peter Drucker. Here's what we cover in an action-packed episode: Why we're living in the best of times and the worst of times Why we have to work beyond national borders to protect our air and water The Delaware problem and the externalising of responsibility The bright future of millennials' broader look at business and accountability Why MeToo and Black Lives Matter demonstrate that the S in ESG doesn't just mean Social, it also means ‘surprise' Why ESG should fill the gap in GAAP Defining corporate governance at a fundamental level The issue of board member independence CEO pay and the need for variability over certainty How to measure board efficacy The problem of acquisitions that don't add value The biggest threats to business sustainability How to put company values into practice The threat that corporate corruption poses to capitalism What it takes to be an effective board member Tips for getting a seat on a board Movies that best teach about corporate governance (Nell is also a movie reviewer at moviemom.com) If you're interested in any aspect of corporate governance then this episode is a must.
