On February 12, 2024, the Minnesota Court of Appeals denied an anti-abortion group's request to relitigate the historic 2022 Doe v. Minnesota decision ending restrictions on abortion care in the state, bringing us one step closer to the end of litigation. In this episode, Gender Justice Special Projects Advisor Erin Maye Quade and Gender Justice Legal Director Jess Braverman review the case, analyze the latest court decision, discuss how a state Equal Rights Amendment would strengthen the constitutional right to abortion, and anticipate a joyful day in the near future when the case is complete for once and for all. Erin Hart welcomes Christina Sambor, new North Dakota State Director for Gender Justice, and Megan Peterson, Gender Justice Executive Director, to discuss the political climate in North Dakota and recent legislation and rhetoric targeting the transgender community and LGBTQ rights. A discussion of the discriminatory nature of the conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in North Dakota's conservative political circles Highlighting the passage of bills that protect trans and reproductive healthcare rights in Minnesota, but also the challenges faced nationally by doctors and teachers in public service, who face an onslaught of political overreach into their professions. The danger of “medical freedom” rhetoric is discussed, and the episode explores the personal beliefs of lawmakers and the lack of evidence provided by supporters of the anti-trans bills. The importance of reclaiming the narrative and valuing individual freedoms, especially in predominantly conservative states like North Dakota. HB 1254, which prohibits gender-affirming care and criminalizes doctors who perform such care, was signed into law with a broad "grandfather clause" that may not protect those currently receiving treatment ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. In this episode, Erin Hart, Megan Peterson, and Jess Braverman discuss: The FDA approved Mifepristone for as part of a two-drug regimen for medication abortion in 2000 with unnecessary restrictions, but during the pandemic, the FDA relaxed rules allowing telemedicine access to the medication. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the federal right to abortion, an anti-abortion group went after medication abortion in a manufactured lawsuit Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine vs. FDA. Chaos and confusion, inhibiting access to medication abortion, is the current goal of the anti-abortion movement and lawmakers. This is impacting reproductive rights, but there are ongoing legal battles and campaigns to support reproductive freedom. Providers are working hard to keep abortion accessible in Minnesota, but removing old laws and passing new protective acts is necessary to provide additional protections for patients and providers. What can you do? Contact your legislators to pass the Reproductive Freedom Codification Act repealing Minnesota's abortion restrictions (unrestrictmn.org/ask) and the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act protecting patients and providers (unrestrictmn.org/rfda) …and donuts. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. In this episode, Erin Hart, Megan Peterson, and Abena Abraham provide a legislative update, covering: Dr. Sarah Traxler, Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNC), testified on the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act in the Senate Health Committee. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, PPNCS has seen a 13% increase in patients coming from out of the region for abortion and a 40% increase in second-trimester abortions. Efforts to pass SF 165, the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, continue. This bill is to ensure that all Minnesotans have access to reproductive healthcare and that healthcare providers are protected in providing essential healthcare services. The Reproductive Freedom Defense Act passed the Minnesota House on Monday with 68 “yes” and 62 “no” votes. The movement cannot be stopped, and Minnesota will have the back of providers and patients who need to come here to get care. We also discuss the Trans Refuge Bill, which passed by the Minnesota House early Friday morning. The bill was led by Representative Finke, who spoke passionately about the importance of passing the bill. The bill has also been heard by the Senate Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee and hopefully is on a pathway to reach the governor's desk this year. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. In this episode, Erin Hart, Megan Peterson, Jess Braverman, and Abena Abraham talk through the latest updates from the Minnesota legislature and abortion rights. First, we cover the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, a Minnesota law that protects patients and providers from legal attacks from anti-abortion states. The bill is expected to be voted on in the House on Monday, March 20. Legal director Jess Braverman provides an overview of cases coming out of Texas and the legal landscape that patients and providers are facing. The Red River Women's Clinic in Minnesota won a case challenging the trigger ban in North Dakota, affirming constitutional protection for abortion in the state constitution. The Center for Reproductive Rights brought the case to court, resulting in a significant win. Megan and Abena touch on their recent trip to the Abortion Care Network Conference, where they discussed the cases coming out of Texas and the lawsuit against the FDA for its approval of Mifepristone. The conversation emphasized the need for medically accurate and supportive pregnancy care, particularly for vulnerable communities. The group also gives an update on the other bills moving at the Capitol, including the Positive Pregnancies Support Act and the Reproductive Freedom Codification Act. Jess wraps up the conversation with an update on the lawsuit Doe v. Minnesota and the latest motion to intervene from an anti-abortion group. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. In this episode, Erin Hart and Megan Peterson, and Abena Abraham discuss the current state of legislation. Cynthia Lin's keynote leads into the episode. Description: In this episode, Cynthia Lin from the National Network of Abortion Funds delivers a keynote address at Reproductive Freedom Lobby Day in Minnesota, emphasizing the importance of advocating for reproductive autonomy and abortion access. We also discuss the fractured landscape of abortion rights in the US, the impact of the recent Dobbs decision, and the situation in neighboring Wisconsin. We recap Gender Justice's lobby day, which focused on pushing for the leadership agenda and exploring Minnesota's efforts to expand abortion access, reproductive health rights, and justice. Finally, we discuss the impending decision from a Texas court on Mifepristone and the need to continue efforts to counter the anti-abortion movement's goal of banning all abortions. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. In this episode, Erin Hart, Megan Peterson, and Abena Abraham discuss the latest news from the legislature and the 50th Anniversary of Roe v Wade. We discuss the latest news from the legislative session, starting with the PRO Act (Protect Reproductive Options Act), which successfully cleared the house with a vote of 69-65. The bill will now move on to the Senate. We then dig into the Reproductive Freedom Codification Act and Positive Pregnancies Support Act, focusing on expanding access to abortion and providing unbiased support and care for pregnant individuals. The Positive Pregnancies Support Act deals with state funding for crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), which can limit the care and support that patients receive, and addresses privacy concerns related to CPCs. On the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we acknowledge the pain of not reaching the milestone but see it as an opportunity to set a new bar and reshape the conversation toward full human rights and reproductive freedom. ### Visit the "Gender Justice" Website here and "Unrestrict Minnesota" here. Crisis pregnancy centers, or “CPCs,” are anti-abortion organizations that target pregnant people with predatory, deceptive marketing. They hide in plain sight by operating under the guise of offering comprehensive reproductive healthcare. Instead, they are religiously-affiliated, anti-abortion, and often unlicensed “medical” centers that, as stated by the California legislature, dissuade pregnant people from abortion through “intentionally deceptive advertising and counseling practices that often confuse, misinform and even intimidate” mostly low-income clients from making informed choices. Eighty-three percent are affiliated with evangelical Christianity, and nearly all are tax-exempt. Their deceptive practices are well documented, and range from including words like “choices” in their names and locating themselves next to abortion clinics to trick pregnant people into walking through their doors, to wearing medical scrubs and having untrained personnel give and interpret ultrasounds even when they are not licensed medical facilities (and operate outside of privacy laws like HIPPA), with potentially dangerous consequences. It is also well-known that in addition to providing dubious and sometimes dangerous "medical" advice that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has publicly declared is unsupported by science, they lie to patients about how far along their pregnancies are in an effort to prevent clients from seeking abortions. The American Medical Association has declared that they "violate principles of medical ethics." Oh, and your tax dollars fund them! In Part 1 of a 2-part Femtastic series on Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), we are joined by Megan Peterson and Erin Maye Quade of Gender Justice, a legal and policy advocacy org working to advance gender equity through the law. Gender Justice recently contributed to a national report on CPCs titled "Designed to Deceive: A Study of the Crisis Pregnancy Center in 9 states." The report shows that, rather than offer legitimate healthcare and resources, CPCs target pregnant people of color and pregnant people with lower incomes with deceptive marketing; provide few or no real medical services; and systematically mislead clients about services they do provide, potentially resulting in delayed care and unnecessary risks to their clients' health. Megan and Erin will talk about the intentionally misleading practices CPCs use to market themselves as real health clinics, and the deceptive "care" they provide in order to dissuade or stop clients from having abortions. We also talk about how your tax dollars fund them and what you can do to stop this. Look out for Part 2 of this series, where we discuss how CPCs use client data to violate their privacy in very creepy and dangerous ways - and the role that CPCs are poised to play in a post-Roe United States as a surveillance tool for the anti-abortion movement. Megan Peterson long had a vision for a better, more client-friendly way of matching chemically dependent people with appropriate caregivers but had resisted taking it to the marketplace. Finally her husband gave her the nudge she needed to put her concept—and herself—to the test. After working in the addiction field for more than 15 years as a counselor and pharmaceutical representative, she took action and started 2nd Chance Counseling Service. Her passion is to help patients who need that second, third and tenth chance.

Who is Megan? It is important to me that everyone gets the treatment that they need. We are surrounded by crazy, busy lives and it is essential that we get creative in how we provide treatment. Addiction is not a moral failing, but rather a disease with therapy being a critical part of your recovery. Friends, families, and loved ones are wonderful places to turn for emotional support but often they can be too close to the situation at hand. When you engage with a therapist, they can provide an outside perspective and offer guidance on how best to grow in your recovery. With the use of telemedicine, 2nd Chance Consulting is essentially bringing treatment to you. We make speaking with a therapist, your therapist, easy by finding the time and space that works with your life. We break down the barriers and excuses and pave the road for you to get the recovery you need.

We are talking with Megan Peterson of 2 nd Chance Counseling. 2 nd Chance is an internet-based addiction treatment provider. They have therapists in every state working to make treatment accessible, flexible, and cost-effective. Duane and Megan talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this new treatment model, who it’s for, and how it came to be. 2 nd Chance conducts therapy by video chat. The flexibility this offers creates new possibilities for treatment that is impossible for traditional outpatient clinics. Patients can communicate with their therapist earlier and later. Appointments can be any length the patient and therapist agree on. The flexibility and relative ease of meeting by video instead of in-person mean that appointments can often be set on shorter notice. Patients can utilize their therapist when difficulty arises, instead of waiting until the next scheduled appointment. Most of all, being able to access therapy without traveling eliminates the barriers that prevent people from getting the help they need. Digital communication is a bigger part of our culture than ever, and much of human connection today is digitally enabled.
