Chris shares details on his 66km week, highlighted by a "Moose Fartlek" session consisting of threshold and 5km pace efforts, while Zac reports a strong 83km week. Zac's progress is particularly notable as he returns to 95% health following a back injury, aided by specific strength work. The hosts also promote the upcoming International Women's Day Running Connection on March 1st at George Knott Reserve, a community event featuring Elise Beacom as host, and elite athletes like Jemima Montag and Sarah Klein.https://www.lovetherun.com.au/iwdrunningThe episode's central focus is an interview with Laura Tomic, a Run2PB athlete coached by James Hansen who has made a stunning return to competitive track and field. After a long hiatus from the sport to raise four children, Laura joined the program in March 2024 and has since achieved remarkable success in middle-distance events. During the interview, Laura reflects on her journey from being a high-level teenage athlete to rediscovering her passion for the track as a Master's athlete. She discusses her specific focus on the 800m, 1500m, and steeplechase, events that require a demanding blend of speed and aerobic power. The discussion highlights her recent personal bests, including a 5:19 mile and a sub-5 minute 1500m, as well as her goals for the 2026 season. The episode concludes with a "Quick Questions" segment where Laura shares her preferences for Garmin over Coros and her appreciation for the track community. A link to that recording is in the notes.Hansen placed great emphasis on the role of aerosols in masking extra heating from global warming and how recent spikes in the earth's temperature are linked to a reduction in aerosols over the oceans. He also stressed the need for more research on solar geoengineering citing evidence for how historic volcanic eruptions, not only cooled the planet by reflecting the suns energy back to space but also stimulated carbon sinks creating a greater uptake of carbon dioxide. Here Clare reflects Hansen's findings as well as on a range of issues emphasising the need for humility in facing the enormity and complexity of the climate crisis. She also stressed the dangers of arrogance or over simplistic binary thinking.

James Hansen didn't grow up expecting to stand on the podium. The Tasmanian middle-distance runner started as an underdog, fuelled by nothing more than the joy of running and the stubborn belief that showing up matters. Over the years, that joy was tested - through injury, self-doubt, and most dramatically, a life-threatening brain clot that could have ended his career. In this conversation, we talk about the mental highs and lows of racing at the elite level, how faith has shaped James's approach to sport and life, and the ways he's learned to build resilience when the path ahead isn't clear. We also discuss body image in running, the pressure of chasing times, and why letting go of outcomes can make you a stronger athlete. James shares the moment he almost skipped nationals and how turning up changed the trajectory of his season. James's career so far shows that the real victories aren't always at the finish line. His story is about perspective, persistence, and holding onto the love of running — even when the going gets tough. -- James Hansen is one of Australia's top middle-distance runners, specialising in the 1500m and 5000m (and now dabbling in the half marathon). Based in Tasmania, he has represented Australia on the international stage and is known for his tactical racing style and relentless work ethic. -- This episode is sponsored by Mikro Coffee Roasters. How does storytelling matter? Why might we bring in feelings about our children or a moment of being overcome with beauty into a book about, say, climate change? In this episode of Emerging Form, we speak with Auden Schendler about the power of story, about how we are drawn to tell the stories we most need to tell, and how and why it's important to let humility be a part of our practice.Auden Schendler has spent almost thirty years working on sustainability and climate change in the corporate world, focusing on big scale change that rejects tokenism. Currently Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Aspen One, he has been a town councilman, a Colorado Air Quality Control Commissioner, and an ambulance medic. He's the author of Getting Green Done: Hard Truths from the Sustainability Revolution, which climatologist James Hansen called “an antidote to greenwash,” and new this year, Terrible Beauty: Reckoning with Climate Complicity and Rediscovering our Soul, which historian Naomi Oreskes called “compelling and weirdly fun.” This is a public episode. In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, novelist Stephen Markley joins co-hosts V.V. Markley talks about researching and portraying the scale of catastrophic climate events, the role of the markets and other financial considerations in pushing world leaders to take the issue seriously, and which character in his novel was previously Kamala Harris. Markely also reflects on how in revision, he repeatedly had to scale up his fictional disasters to keep them ahead of actual events, the uncanny experience of forecasting disasters like Helene, and the movement leaders—including Bill McKibben, Al Gore, and James Hansen—he felt compelled to include in his novel. The Parrot and the Igloo: Climate and the Science of Denial w/ David Lipsky

On this edition of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we dive into the world of climate science and denial with acclaimed author David Lipsky, discussing his latest book, The Parrot and the Igloo: Climate and the Science of Denial. Lipsky's narrative unravels the journey from the early days of climate awareness to the rise of misinformation and denialism that has shaped public perception and policy today. Lipsky explores the prophetic warnings of global warming, like the New York Times' 1956 prediction of parrots in the Antarctic, and the contrasting spectacle of Senator James Inhofe's 2010 igloo on the Washington Mall, mocking climate change with a sign reading, "Al Gore's New Home: Honk If You Love Climate Change." The discussion highlights the groundbreaking work of James Hansen, an academic at Columbia University who was an important voice warning the world about the dangers of climate change and serves as one of the real life heroes in Lipsky's book. We delve into Hansen's involvement in the Pioneer Venus project and how research into Venus's atmosphere helped scientists understand the catastrophic potential of a runaway greenhouse effect—a scenario he feared could threaten Earth's future, driving him to speak out for the sake of his grandchildren. We also delve into the role of big business in science denial, with a focus on the tobacco industry and the Phillip Morris Science Action Plan. Lipsky illustrates how tactics developed by the tobacco industry to spread doubt about the dangers of smoking were later adapted to promote climate denial. Companies used these methods to create uncertainty around the scientific consensus on global warming, employing PR strategies that aimed to manipulate public perception. Lipsky brings to light the financial interests and industries that fueled climate denial propaganda, referencing the controversial 2007 documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle. He introduces the concept of "The 25," the key figures in climate denialism, a term inspired by Steven Milloy's admission that there were only "25 of us" fighting against climate science. Lipsky traces how these denialists, some with backgrounds in defending tobacco, transitioned to spreading disinformation tied to the oil industry. The episode also touches on Lipsky's thought-provoking hypothesis about societal complicity in climate denial. While J.G. Michael suggests that powerful entities like the oil industry and groups such as the Moonies were actively pushing climate skepticism, Lipsky adds that society at large may have subconsciously wanted the denialists to be right because of our dependence on fossil fuels. He suggests that instead of taking collective action, we find it easier to blame oil companies and denialists, ignoring our own unwillingness to make lifestyle changes. This, however, is not to say that Lipsky let's oil companies and interest groups off the hook, but rather points at the way we, as a society, have failed to take action when it comes to the warming of our planet. We discuss the years of inaction on climate change by Republican administrations and the Democratic Party's missed opportunities, specifically during the presidency of Barack Obama. Despite organized climate denial losing ground in recent years, societal action on climate change remains insufficient. Figures like Bjorn Lomborg and Dr. Timothy Ball have faded into obscurity, yet Lipsky argues that our lack of decisive action indicates that we, as a society, might now be the ones in denial. Finally, we examine the influence of Republican pollster Frank Luntz, who reframed the conversation by popularizing the term "climate change" to make the issue seem less alarming and downplay the urgency of global warming. Join us for a conversation that covers the heroes and villains of climate science, the spread of disinformation, and how the American character has played a role in this tragicomic battle for the truth. Whether you're a climate advocate or curious about the history of climate skepticism, this episode offers a deep dive into one of the most critical issues of our time.
