In this episode, Stef and Sarah are talking about body image fluctuations. They kick things off with Stef admitting she's been in a bit of a funk lately, which has her feeling some body image blues. They chat about how our moods can totally mess with how we see our bodies—like when you're tired or anxious, everything feels heavier and more irritating. Stef talks about the importance of recognizing these mood shifts and working on regulating them before trying to 'fix' anything else. They also tackle the topic of 'floods'—those visceral reactions to body image triggers—and share some strategies for managing them when they hit. They also highlight the confusing mix of emotions when weight changes feel different depending on the context. Sarah shares an amusing anecdote about feeling self-conscious in a string bikini. Stef touches on her past struggle with 'reverse body dysmorphia,' where she clung to an outdated image of her younger self. They wrap up with some thoughts on how seasons influence our body image and the power of gradual exposure. Overall, this episode is a mix of raw honesty, empathy, and practical tips for anyone navigating the ever-changing landscape of body image. Join our support community. In this episode, we have an open and honest conversation on body image and sport. This episode was so long (and we could have kept going), that we are putting it out in two parts. In Part 1, we talk about body image and its impact on athletes and the pressure of performance. We delve into how childhood affects the way we see our bodies, as well as societal influences on body image. We even talk about Ozempic and debate about whether or not the era of "body positivity" is over. A must listen for all athletes male and female, and we encourage you to be part of this conversation by emailing your thoughts to us at iracelikeagirl@gmail.com. Have a listen!
As we celebrate the holiday season and anticipate the coming New Year, one of the most common concerns for many is how we can enjoy our favorite foods without regret. Continuing to reinforce healthy eating habits is more pressing during this time of year. With this in mind, Tee is revisiting an important conversation she had in April of 2024 with Dr. Leona Allen about the role toxins play in both weight loss and overall health. Dr. Leona is a licensed chiropractor and the founder of Freedom Health Systems. In this episode, the often-overlooked relationship between toxins and weight is examined as Dr. Leona shares her journey from struggling with weight loss after the birth of her two boys and discovering the significant impact of toxins on overall health. In addition, Dr. Leona emphasizes the importance of detoxifying on a cellular level to improve health and facilitate weight loss, highlighting that diet and exercise alone may not be sufficient for those facing weight loss resistance due to toxic overload. The conversation also covers the role of cellular inflammation in health, the major toxins to avoid, and practical steps toward detoxification and healthier living. This is an often overlooked subject for both men and women looking to lose weight in a healthy way and Dr. Leona's insights will prove to be both encouraging and invaluable. Kelly Schupp is a 46-year-old mechanical engineer and mom of two living in Louisiana, one of the worst states for people who LOVE to eat! The food there is well known for being irresistible, but not the healthiest. Kelly grew up on an agricultural farm (primarily rice and crawfish) with a Cajun great-grandmother and mother who were fabulous cooks. Food was everywhere, all the time, absolutely engrained in the culture she grew up in. Kelly was overweight at a young age and struggled her whole life to lose weight and keep it off. Her mom was also overweight and had them try every diet out there: Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, the “Zone” diet, low carb, ketogenic, paleo, etc. Unfortunately, nothing ever worked long-term. Years went by and diets and workout fads came and went, but her weight remained the same. She hovered nearly 200 lbs for nearly 20 years. It was her body's setpoint and nothing she did ever changed it, even after she cleaned her diet up significantly to keep insulin resistance and diabetes at bay (which her mother and father both had). Then, in 2018, Kelly had surgery, and her weight started to climb rapidly, topping out at around 215 lbs. Kelly started an 8-week “body transformation” program, weightlifting 4-5x's/week and eating like a bodybuilder. She stuck to the program, logging everything she ate and did – and gained 3 lbs. Her doctors scratched their heads and then offered to test her metabolism with a CO2 measurement. Surprisingly, Kelly's estimated basal metabolic rate of 1500 kcal was off by 500 kcal! The test proved that she only burned 1,000 kcal/day at rest, which meant 3 meals/day would be nearly impossible for her. Kelly had read Gin Stephens' book and was curious about fasting. Her doctors agreed to let her try it. In December In 2022, she started with a 16:8 protocol, eventually settling on OMAD as it proved the easiest to manage as she travelled often for work and was rarely hungry in the evenings. Kelly lost 60 lbs in the span of a year and is maintaining a 50 lb loss from her highest weight with more flexibility in her eating window. Most days, she continues to do an 18:6, usually eating one meal + a small, high-protein snack before closing her window. This week Tee is excited to welcome Dr. Leona Allen, a licensed chiropractor and founder of Freedom Health Systems. In this episode, Dr. Allen and Tee discuss the often-overlooked relationship between toxins and weight issues. Dr. Leona also shares her journey from struggling with weight loss after the birth of her two boys and discovering the significant impact of toxins on overall health. Dr. Allen also emphasizes the importance of detoxifying on a cellular level to improve health and facilitate weight loss, highlighting that diet and exercise alone may not be sufficient for those facing weight loss resistance due to toxic overload. The conversation also covers the role of cellular inflammation in health, the major toxins to avoid, and practical steps toward detoxification and healthier living. Kiri is a 43-year-old registered nurse, professional dancer, mango farmer and mother of two girls 12 and 14. She resides in a small town called Kununurra, on Miriwoong country in the remote East Kimberly of Western Australia. Kiri was the chubby baby who turned into the even chubbier toddler, becoming the obese child who transitioned into the desperately dieting teenager and adult. At 13 years of age weighing 93kgms/205 pounds (172cms/ 5.7' tall), she embarked on her first diet- Weight-Watches and so began the lifelong battle of the diets and calorie restriction. Like many, she had tried it all, from low to high fat, low to high carb, vegetarian to keto and everything in between. Her highest weight was in 2008 at 110kgms/198 pounds and after the birth of her second child she made the commitment to take control of her weight once again. Years of restrictive diets and excessive exercise regimes, saw her maintain her weight around 75kgms/165 pounds, but as Kiri headed into mid age, years of restrictive diets and exercise along with a high cortisol lifestyle, meant weight management was becoming harder and less sustainable. Other ailments such as skin disorders, osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel were becoming more prominent and debilitating. In October 2020 she was discussing health issues to a good friend and a TFH FB group member. The friend directed her to read Fast Feast Repeat by Gin Stephens and The Fasting Hwy by Graeme Currie. Having always been invested in healthcare and deeply interested by science, she went on to devour these books and several more, having never looked back. Becoming Adipose adapted was a challenging process for Kiri. She started with 16:8 and white knuckled it for 3 months, watching her weight go up 3.5kgms/7.7 pounds in that time. Without the support of The Fasting Highway Facebook group, she is doubtful as to whether she would have made it through the first three months. Although she only lost 7kgms/15.5 pounds with IF, the inches and NSV are many. Freedom from demonizing food has helped heal her relationship with food and herself and gives her the extra time to work on being her best self. The Fasting Highway News Graeme is now available to have a private one on one coaching and mentoring session with you. He can help you with those burning questions.
