“Anybody can be a collector of beautiful things,” says Michael Hawley, who heads the Getty Museum Photographs Council (GMPC), a donors' group that helps the museum acquire work from underrepresented artists. The world of art collection and custodianship is historically elitist, so it's no wonder many people find the idea of simply entering a gallery intimidating. An established collector himself, Michael reassures would-be collectors that art is for everyone and anyone can be a collector with the right mindset. On today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Michael to discuss the curator's avid love of art and his mission to democratize ownership for collectors of all different incomes. “We're very interested in this democratization of art,” Michael says of the Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles, where he is also a sitting chairperson. To draw in a younger audience, the council recently instituted an affordable membership level for educators and students of all ages. “We don't want it to be or feel elitist,” he continues. Michael shares pieces of his personal story, describing how his growing art collection led to a position with the Getty: “Some of the curators from the Getty came and saw [my collection] and thought it was interesting, and the way that I collected was interesting, and what I collected was interesting, and asked me to be part of the Photographs Council,” he tells Scott. Michael also chats about the intersection of art and AI, the role of NFTs in democratizing art, and how to get a collection started on a budget. This episode is dedicated to anyone who's ever felt too intimidated to start an art collection. To start your collection with confidence, tune in to our fascinating conversation with Michael Hawley, who firmly believes “art is for everyone.”In Today's EpisodeMichael Hawley discusses…The story behind the first piece in his collectionHis personal approach to art collectingWhy philanthropy and support for the arts and are so importantHow to become a collector on whatever budget you're working withHis advice for collectors intimidated by high-end galleries The premise and purpose behind the Photographic Arts Council Los AngelesThe specific challenges that go along with democratizing artWhy collecting art is really a form of self-careThe contemporary artists he's particularly excited about right nowFor more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/michael-hawley

Francis Tumblety was one America's greatest 19th century charlatans. A medical quack who became rich peddling cure-all herbal remedies, his larger-than-life character and questionable morals put him into some sticky situations - including being arrested as a suspect in the Lincoln assassination. But his most notorious claim to fame, was as a primary Scotland Yard suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders. My guest, Michael L. Hawley, author of "Jack the Ripper SUSPECT Dr. Francis Tumblety", shares his research and presents some of the evidence that suggests that Tumblety should be taken far more seriously as a suspect than he has been. More information about Michael Hawley can be found at his website: michaellhawley.comHe is also a co-host of the podcast, House of Mystery Radio: https://shows.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio/about

After 130 years, do we finally know the identity of Jack the Ripper? Unfortunately, no. After releasing test results of a controversial silk shawl stained with blood and, possibly, semen, supposedly found at the scene of one of the Ripper killings, forensic scientists are pointing the finger at Aaron Kosminski, a 23-year-old Polish barber in London who was one of the first suspects identified by London police in the Ripper case. But like all elements in the Jack the Ripper saga, the evidence they’re offering is not able to close the book on the string of murders that terrorized the London streets of 1888.The case for the barber’s unmasking is tied to the shawl alleged to have been found next to Catherine Eddowes, the Ripper’s fourth victim. As David Adam at Science reports, the cloth was acquired by Ripper enthusiast Russell Edwards in 2007, who had it DNA tested. While Edwards published the results in his 2014 book, Naming Jack the Ripper, he kept the DNA results and methods under wraps, making it impossible to assess or verify the claims of Kosminski as Ripper. Now, the biochemists who ran those tests, Jari Louhelainen of John Moores University in Liverpool and David Miller of the University of Leeds, have published the data in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.Read more: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/jack-rippers-dna-collected-shawl-though-doubts-linger-180971726/#lOSCbt1xrCrGpr6z.99Give the gift of Smithsonian magazine for only $12! http://bit.ly/1cGUiGvFollow us: @SmithsonianMag on Twitter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
