Ever since Evil first debuted on CBS in 2019, I was told time and time again that it was an absolute must-watch, that this genre mash-up of a show was right up my alley. I'm deeply embarrassed to admit that it took me until summer of 2022 to actually take that advice. But, sure enough, I fell so hard for Evil that now I'm determined to pay it forward — go watch all three seasons of Evil on Paramount+ right now!The show stars Mike Coulter as David, a Catholic seminarian working as an assessor, someone tasked with investigating the legitimacy of miracles and also claims of demonic activity. David does this with the help of Aasif Mandvi's Ben, a contractor who specializes in technology and has a knack for disproving supernatural phenomena via rational explanations. Rounding out the team with a different perspective and set of skills is Katja Herbers' Kristen, a psychologist who doesn't believe in the supernatural but rather that everything has an explanation in science. However, the more cases the team takes, the more Kristen's core beliefs are challenged.Clearly I adore Evil overall, but one particular element of the show that makes it a must-watch series is Herbers' performance. Not only does she deftly weave through complex cases that put everything the character believes to the test, but she goes all-in when tackling every single ounce of it, and given how many genres and tones Evil spans, that makes for a deliciously wide-ranging performance.Given my enthusiasm for the show and her performance, it probably goes without saying that it was the ultimate treat to welcome Herbers to Collider Ladies Night to discuss her journey from Holland to Hollywood and, of course, what went down in Evil Season 3. Books! Who knew me and Mandell Conway, conversation-partner number two for this third season of meandering conversations, would spend a whole episode talking abouts books. (Well. More or less. Not 100% perhaps. But a lot. And as I am a book buff I was pleasantly surprised to find a book buff-friend in Mandell). You see, I know Mandell more for the stories he writes, as we met up in end November 2020 for The Storyskills Workshop. Luckily for me, Mandell started a blog in the first months of 2022, publishing writings he somewhat irregularly shares on LinkedIn too, which is where they caught my eye. In that way, he kind of made his way into my mind as I started to ponder who I wanted to spend season three with. It's fascinating how easy it is to set up rules for reading, rules that might or might not serve you (or your reading habit). '… as I began to learn and like to read and fall down these rabbit holes of self-development, I wouldn't buy books unless I was reading them. And then if I read a book, I would finish them. Then I read somewhere that it's okay to have a bunch of books in your house that you haven't read. Just look at it as if you have all this wisdom accessible to you at any moment.' ~ Mandell I did the same thing as Mandell, punished myself by judging me a failure if I started to read a book without finishing it. Today I've so let that belief go, as there are way to many books out there for me to spend my time reading books I am not getting something of value from, regardless what that ‘value' might be. I've also imposed a no-book-buying-ban on myself, having ten years or so when I'd only read library books. I've relaxed a lot around that issue too, buying books that I know I want to marginalia in. (No. That's not an actual verb. But in my vocabulary it is.) So when I learned about tsundoku (having books piled everywhere) in an article by Austin Kleon, I laughed because this is so me. He also quotes Edward Tufte: “The important books in my library are the unread books.” Perhaps this is true for tankespjärn as well? The important thing is to be in a setting where the potential for coming across one (or two, or…) is high. Such as when you join me and Mandell in this our first conversation. Enjoy! Friend of the show Mike "One Shot" Coulter joins Jaymee for an entire episode dedicated to parsing through the supernatural qualities of The Beatles documentary "Get Back". Prior to watching the film, Mike (a former major label recording artist) was not particularly a Beatles fan and wanted to watch it more as an appreciator of documentaries, and Jaymee (former songwriter/producer) is your run of the mill Beatle superfan/historian who's biggest influence in life are The Beatles. Though the two entered into the film with separate preferences and in different mindsets, both interestingly walked away with a similar feeling, summed up perfectly in a Portuguese word Mike has tattooed on his hand: sau·da·de (noun) - a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia. Warning: This episode shares a lot of details about the film, though nothing discussed would be technically considered a "spoiler alert". It's a discussion mostly of personal feelings experienced. The episode does share interesting Beatle facts not included in the film to add additional context to what was happening in John, Paul, George and Ringo's lives at the time the film was shot, and the backstory of how Peter Jackson became the films director. Maybe Another Story About New Yorkers Isn't So Drab Hannah Pearl Utt as Rachel Gurner and Jen Tullock as Jackie Gurner Living in New York City is hard. Being the lesbian daughter of a pretentious theater actor whom you live with above a theater along with your childish older sister and her kid is even harder. *exhale* Finding out your dead mother is not only alive but is also a famous actress on a soap opera filmed a couple blocks away is the type of story that deserves some screen time! Director, writer, and actress Hannah Pearl Utt as Rachel Gurner crafts a very captivating family dynamic with Before You Know It that checks all the boxes of a critically acclaimed indie film. It’s savvy, but quirky. Endearing in all its most pleasurable moments here stands a film that simply wishes to tell us a story. There is Chemistry in the Casting Co-written by Jen Tullock who also plays Jackie Gurner, the story here is nothing without the life it is given through it’s casting. Judith Light plays Sherrell, the estranged mother walking through life on a red carpet of flashing lights, and dresses bedazzled by the best designers. What she has in fame, she lacks in family and balance. Mandy Patinkin stars as Jackie and Rachel’s father Mel Garner, an actor with enough notoriety and acclaim in the theater community to literally mouth-fart some of it away on stage. It’s easy to see how things ended up here without the need for any deep diving expositions or flashbacks. Oona Yaffe plays Dodge, Jackie’s daughter, in the typical troupe of parent birth’s kid, kid raises parent and yet what she brings to the character is so refreshing and wonderful. The chemistry here feels like it was put together in a lab, with added help from Mike Coulter as Charles and Arica Himmel as his daughter Olivia with the most gorgeously big and beautiful eyes you’ll see this year. Arica Himmel as Olivia and Oona Yaffe as Dodge Gurner Wonder-full on the Weekend If you’re looking for a reason to matinee your Saturday, this might be just what the doctor ordered. Before You Know It is the type of film that sets the stage for Utt and Tullock to have long, promising careers working either behind or in front of the camera. Hopefully they’ll continue to do both.
