Ships hit bridges much more often than people realize, and while most of the outcomes are minor, such events can present big risks to bridge users, ship operators, and infrastructure. Bridge design standards that address such risks are issued and updated periodically by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, but they do not mandate adding protection to existing bridges. Yet the size of ocean-going cargo has grown substantially in the past 30 years, amplifying the risks for bridges over ocean-connected waterways. To understand just how safe our major U.S. bridges are today, we talk with Mike Winters, P.E., who is Senior Structural Engineer with Moffatt & Nichol, a U.S.-based global infrastructure advisor. Mike is the principal U.S. representative to an international committee established by the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses to develop guidelines associated with ship collisions with bridges and other fixed structures.

I have been watching a programme called "when showbiz good horribly wrong" which demonstrated how easy it is to NOT make money........to actually make money in the music business you have to think things out or you will get ripped off by managers and publishers who have no musical talent.....the way I did it was to look for the gaps in the market....in the 60s all the groups were playing rock and roll and pop music....only 7 or 8 piece dance bands were playing strict tempo....so in the mid 60s my band perfected quicksteps, slow foxes, waltzes etc and as we could also play pop and rock we covered all bases and when the group scene ground to a halt in the 70s we played on as a function band....and during the 70s I started writing songs and sending them out top publishers with little success but it was when I sent one to the Opportunity Knocks Songwriters Contest and appeared on the show that I knew I was on the right track so I set up my own record and publishing company and released my own stuff which took off....as the only opinion that mattered about my songs was mine...... What were the worst two winters in the 60s?.....Mike and Bernie........which brings me to my "One of the worst records ever" spot......again this is an example of comedians....if you could call them that....sticking to what they do best and leaving making records to singers.....this one is called "I Like It" and must NOT be confused with Gerry Marsden's classic number one hit in the 60s.......it is basically an instrumental with short breaks where the title was shouted out....they are the ONLY lyrics.....now I don't know if Mike Winters was actually playing his clarinet in the band ( who are very good)......but Bernie definitely should have been forcibly removed from the recording studio......so here it is.....Mike and Bernie Winters "singing" "I Like It"
Don's rant at the news followed by.... I built a small recording studio in my attic and created a demo service (another gap in the market) whereby songwriters would send me their rough songs and I would put them into a state which they could present to publishers etc,,,,I ended up doing 200 of these demos which paid for my studio.....I joined the Songwriters Guild and advertised in their magazine which is where I got all my customers....and again there was very little competition.......to me it has always been business...I was not remotely interested in feeding my ego or being "famous" .....fame can cost as history has proved...........the demo service was fascinating and I received some very strange stuff from people singing in the bath to songs which had lyrics which neither scanned or rhymed.....however one of my demos was sent by the composer, to the International Religious Song Festival in Rome....I was asked to go and sing the song but was too busy at the time so I sent my good pal Paul Damian to go and sing it which he did and met the Pope....and another lady sent me her song about Italy...which I put together and told her to send it to the Italian Tourist Board and take whatever they offered...the Board liked the song and offered her £450.....she was also a member of The Songwriters Guild and asked me if she should ask their advice...I told her to just take the money but she contacts The Guild who go over the top with contracts etc and she got nothing....she should have listened to Don.

This show, a special request to honor a brother who passed, comes to us from the New Haven Coliseum in New Haven Connecticut on April 23rd, 1983. I considered only playing set number two, as it exists in soundboard form, but this first set has such spirited playing that although it is an audience copy I quite enjoyed it - I hope you do as well. The 'Alabama Getaway' jumps out of the box and shows the boys mean business on this night. Jerry's licks are fast and hot and it flows naturally into the 'Greatest Story'. While the vocals on 'Candyman' (and several others) are a bit far away, I suggest turning it up! :) 'New Minglewood' smokes.. this is one of the better versions I think... A nice little Garcia jam follows the return to Tennessee.. Bobby sounds a little rushed ;) during 'Lightnin>Supplication' ...the sweet lead into a hot Supplication makes up for it. A lovely 'Peggy-O' follows, then Brent gets to bring out 'Far From Me'. The first set ends with a amped up 'Music Never Stopped', I can't imagine many were in their seats.. Host Ryan Stanton, MD, FACEP talks to Mike Winters, MD, FACEP about the upcoming release of "Emergency Department Resuscitation of the Critically Ill (2nd edition)", the growing connection between emergency medicine and critical care, and the future of emergency medicine.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Dr. Mike Winters on his first ever visit to Canada at North York General's Emergency Medicine Update Conference, where he gave two fantastic presentations. His credentials are impressive: He is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Associate Professor in both EM and IM, EM-IM-Critical Care Program co-director and Residency Program Director of EM-IM at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Sometimes we are so caught up with the job we need to get done during cardiac arrest that we forget about the important and profound effect that this event has on patients' families. On this Best Case Ever Dr. Winters tells the story of witnessing his grandfather's cardiac arrest, being present in the ED during the resuscitation attempts, and how that experience has coloured his practice. We discuss some pearls on communication with patients' families after death, colour-coded cardiac arrest teams and how to integrate POCUS into cardiac arrest care while minimizing chest compressions. Don't Forget A & B! Over 500,000 patients per year suffer sudden cardiac arrest. Despite advances in our understanding and management of cardiac arrest, less than 15% of patients survive to hospital discharge with meaningful neurologic survival. In recent years, the focus of cardiac arrest resuscitation has been the delivery of high-quality chest compressions and early defibrillation for those with a shockable rhythm. As a result, airway interventions and ventilation now follow attempts to optimize circulation in cardiac arrest patients. Though high-quality CPR and early defibrillation are essential in the initial stages of resuscitation, advanced airway placement and appropriate ventilation are critical to overall patient survival. Dr. Winters' discusses the current literature on the timing of advanced airway placement, oxygenation, and ventilation for the cardiac arrest patient. In addition, he discusses optimal targets for oxygenation and ventilation in the patient with return of spontaneous circulation from sudden cardiac arrest.
To quote Mike Winters from the "Project Description" of his Masters Thesis "Strategies for Continuous Auditory Display of Arousal and Valence" in which he states "Sound is capable of profound emotional experiences: one need look no further than the importance of music in film. Sonification is field of research interested in the use of sound to convey information in general, but what happens when the data is emotion?" This discussion scratches the surface of this research and starts the dialog regarding the fuzzy intersection of Art and Science that is presented when researching the techniques associated with affective computing when using data to drive emotional content systematically.
