Summer is the perfect time to shake up your skincare routine because not only is it the season of sun, surf and sand, it also goes hand in hand with enlarged pores, oiliness, congestion, pimples and pigmentation. Stick around because today, I've got all your summer skincare bases covered. CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: www.instagram.com/lauren.kbeauty Facebook: www.facebook.com/stylestory.au Website: www.thekoreanbeautyshow.com Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/stylestoryau Tik Tok: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSaHUgHL/ Download Your Free Guide to K-Beauty: https://mailchi.mp/f845eb5d20cd/guidetokbeauty Episode Summary: THE PERFECT BASIC SUMMER K-BEAUTY ROUTINE (FOR NIGHT) STEP 1 – OIL CLEANSE After a day of fun in the sun, you'll want to make sure you remove all traces of your sunscreen (and makeup if you were wearing any). The Korean two-step cleanse is perfect for this, starting with a quick oil cleanse. STEP 2 – FOAM CLEANSE After you're done removing your sunscreen and makeup, follow up with a foam cleanse. This helps to remove any other traces of dirt or debris. If you're heading on the road, grab JJ Young by Caolion's Black Cleansing Stick. It comes in a handy, hygienic stick form that's quick and easy to use. STEP 3 – TONE Toning is essential to help reset skin after washing up. It also helps your skin to properly absorb the next products you apply. If the humidity has bought out any breakouts, blackheads or congestion, use your toner to help get it under control. I love iUNIK Tea Tree Relief Toner for a light, summer layer that tackles congestion. STEP 4 – ESSENCE Essence will go to work on your skin at the cellular level. With the additional stress from the sun, humidity and air-conditioning, your skin will need a little extra TLC. For a light, nourishing layer that soothes red, irritated and sensitive skin, we love Tosowoong's Green Tea Eco Brightening Essence. STEP 5 – SERUM Summer is not the time to be lathering on heavy serums, so opt for light layers. Choose ones that are jam-packed with active ingredients and nourishing extracts. To tackle any new pigmentation or sun spots that have cropped up, APLB Vitamin C Serum will give you visible skin brightening results. If you'll be spending any time in-flight or in air-conditioning, we'd go with d'Alba Piedmont's First Spray Serum. This is a cult Korean product that went viral after it was revealed to be the secret behind Korean airline hostesses' hydrated complexions in flight. If the humidity has you looking like an oil slick, Benton's Snail Bee Ultimate Serum is the perfect fix. It treats damaged, acne-prone and rough skin perfectly without overdoing it on the hydration. STEP 6 – MOISTURISER Moisturisers should be kept to a light layer unless you suffer from really dry skin. If you've totally cooked it at the beach, Benton's gentle Aloe Soothing Propolis Gel will help coax skin back to life. If you're experiencing extra breakouts or blotchiness, iUNIK's light gel textured Centella Calming Gel Creamis your match. Packed with 70% Centella Asiatica and 10% tea tree leaf water it takes care of skin in a fast-acting formula. THE 6 SUMMER SKINCARE MISTAKES TO AVOIDSummer's in full swing and that means barbies with friends and family, days spent by the beach, hiking, hanging out and plenty of picnics. From pore problems to thick makeup and sunburn, get our list of top summer skincare mistakes to avoid so that your skin stays glowing all summer (in all the right ways): MISTAKE 1: DITCHING YOUR MOISTURISER Skin often feels oilier in summer, and if you're oily already, no doubt your skin is going into overdrive right now. Time to cut the moisturiser so you don't overdose on oil, right? Nooo! What to do instead: Summer is not the time to skip your moisturiser, as moisturiser actually helps balance your skin's oil and moisture levels to regulate sebum production. Instead, look for a lightweight moisturiser that's non-greasy with a matte finish to help balance everything out. Instead, just opt for lighter textures - gels are perfect for summer. MISTAKE 2: NOT REAPPLYING SUNSCREEN We all know about the need to wear a proper sunscreen that blocks both the sun's UVB and UVA rays, but often, we're one and done as soon as we're out the door in the morning. In summer, applying sunscreen once a day simply won't cut out. What to do instead: As a general rule, we should be reapplying after every 2 hours of sun exposure, after towelling off, sweating vigorously or doing exercise. Get STYLE STORY's tips for how to reapply sunscreen while wearing makeup here. MISTAKE 3: GETTING SUNBURNT Sun exposure is one of the key causes of aging and results in everything from blotchy, red skin to pigmentation and wrinkles. Getting sunburnt is a good way of going about everything from premature wrinkles, sun spots and even skin cancer. What to do instead: If you've cooked it (literally), then opt for skin soothing products containing Aloe Vera. Benton's Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel is great for after-sun care, and Tosowoong's Pure Aloe Masksare perfect to pop in the fridge for a soothing mask as well. MISTAKE 4: LATHERING ON MAKEUP Summer is not the time to be layering on thick makeup, especially if you're going to be sweating in the sun. Pores open up when you sweat, opening them up to dirt, oil and makeup. Particularly for those of us who are acne prone, wearing makeup while sweating can aggravate it. What to do instead: Opt for light textured BB Creams like Missha's M Perfect Cover BB Cream, which tackles all the primary skin concerns like uneven texture and redness but without blocking your pores. If you find yourself getting oily throughout the day, products like Innisfree's No Sebum Mineral Powderwork wonders as a substitute to blotting paper. MISTAKE 5: IGNORING YOUR PORES Summer can be harsh on pores, as they open up when you sweat, making them much more susceptible to congestion. Pore problems are the root of skin problems and can contribute to acne. What to do instead: Treat the root of problem pores with cleansing ingredients like charcoal and clay, to vacuum up any impurities and keep pores minimised, matte and smooth. Oily skin can also make pores appear bigger than they are, which is why it's important to balance your oil levels. I love JJ Young by Caolion Lab's Black Cleansing Stick and Pore Erasing Stick for cleansing, Cosmetea's Black Tea Pink Clay Maskand Cosmetea's Peppermint Tea Green Clay Mask for mattifying clay mask treatments and JJ Young's Pore Goodnight Mask to keep pores in tip-top shape. MISTAKE 6: FORGETTING YOUR FEET Chances are that if the sun's out, your feet will be too. Cracked, callused heels and dead, rough skin are a sight for sore eyes, especially in sandals. What to do: Make sure your tootsies are in tip-top shape with a peeling foot mask to remove any dead, rough, cracked or callused skin. If you don't have time to wait for your feet to peel with a foot peeling mask (which are really popular in K-Beauty), then try APLB Foot Repair Cream. It works to take care of old skin on your feet to reveal the baby-fresh stuff hiding behind it! SOME OF THE BEST K-BEAUTY PRODUCTS FOR SUMMER Clay Mask Cosmetea's divine Peppermint Tea Green Clay Mask looks good enough and works to tighten and improve uneven skin. It works to vacuum up any impurities and take care of large pores, uneven texture and dullness. Pimple Patches Don't let pimples ruin your summer – if you see one rear its head, reach for Subi Pimple Patch over it. They suck the sebum and pus out of active pimples and also work to prevent acne scarring. Sleeping Masks If you're in a dry climate, suffering from oily skin or are feeling leached by the air-conditioning, let Jelly Ko Cherry Blossom Sleeping Mask repair your skin for you while you sleep. Sheet Mask If your summer is being marred by blackheads, congestion, sebum and impurities, you're not alone. Whack a JJ Young by Caolion Lab Pore Charcoal Mask on. This unique 3D pore tightening mask dries to firmly fit your exact face shape, leaving skin visibly firmer, smoother and more hydrated. Misting Spray Skin like a grease ball halfway through the day? Need a quick pick-me-up? Just want to spritz something cool all over your face?! Grab APLB Centella Mist Toner and get to it. Exfoliating Scrub Slough away blackheads, whiteheads and the dead skin cells that clog pores and make skin look dull with Mizon's Special Therapy Honey Black Sugar Mask. This multi-tasking scrub is formulated with 35% black sugar and is the perfect treat for summer skin. Snail Cream | Bio Mimicry | నడక నిథానం పంట బంగారంSnail cream is any beauty product that contains snail slime, also known as mucin. Basically, when snails are agitated, they excrete a thick fluid to protect themselves from cuts, sun damage and bacteria. That fluid is snail slime, which was first used for dermatological purposes in ancient Greece to treat inflammation. Fast-forward a couple thousand years to when snail slime became hugely popular on the Korean beauty scene. And now, it’s firmly in the worldwide markets. it doesn’t sound too appealing but will stay with us here. Well, snail slime is packed with many of the ingredients—including hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and peptides—that are commonly added to beauty products. In addition to soothing inflammation, snail creams (like Mizon’s Snail Recovery Gel Cream and Shangpree’s Snail Moisture Mask) can also help fade dark spots and scars. Not to mention that these creams can purportedly also plump creased skin and battle acne, naturally. But here’s the catch—while many derms are fans of the bizarre ingredient, lab studies on the efficacy of snail slime have been largely inconclusive. Hey, it can’t hurt to try. If for nothing else than to answer the compliment “You are glowing” with “Thanks, it’s snail excrement!” And hey, we’re all for trying new things. If you want practical solutions to pimple problems, then stay tuned because today we’re covering how to get rid of pimples using K-Beauty products, tips and tricks. CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: www.instagram.com/lauren.kbeauty Facebook: www.facebook.com/stylestory.au Website: www.thekoreanbeautyshow.com Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/stylestoryau Tik Tok: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSaHUgHL/ Download Your Free Guide to K-Beauty: https://mailchi.mp/f845eb5d20cd/guidetokbeauty Episode Summary With so many pimple and acne solutions out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The first step is to identify the type of pimple or congestion you have before moving onto an appropriate treatment. Whiteheads: This is your classic pimple – a raised bump, with a white head. These are the kind of pimples you get when your pores are clogged with oil, dirt, dead skin cells etc. Pimple patches (especially the hydrocolloid ones) can be very effective against these, as they essentially suck the gunk out of them. Blackheads: These are much like whiteheads, except that the pores don’t close up. Instead, whatever’s clogging the pore oxidises on the surface of the skin, giving it a darker colour. Try skincare acids (eg. AHA, BHA) and clay masks to improve congestion. Pustules: These pimples contain – you guessed it, pus. Pustules often occur when you’re dealing with an infection and your body is producing more white blood cells. In laymen’s terms, pus is a combination of dead white blood cells and liquid related to the infection. Spot treatments and products that can dry out the pimple are the way to go here. Cysts: These are no fun. Cystic pimples lie beneath the surface of your skin and are often painful. It’s important to see a doctor or dermatologist for these, firstly to confirm that you have cystic acne, and secondly because cystic acne often requires medical assistance to fully heal. Tried and True Pimple Fixes Subi Perfect Pimple Patches are perfect for dealing with run-of-the-mill breakouts. Made from 100% hydrocolloid, they are drug-free, which makes them suitable for all skin types. While they’re most effective on whiteheads and blackheads, Perfect Pimple Patches can also work as a protective barrier on all pimple types to assist your skin’s natural healing process. As an added bonus – these patches are barely visible and ultra thin, making them perfect for pimples in hard-to-reach places like the side of your nose. Because they’re almost invisible, they can be worn both day and night. If you’re looking for a more traditional spot treatment, COSRX’s AC Collection Ultimate Spot Cream helps skin bounce back from acne. This blend of Zinc Oxide, Calamine, Aloe Vera and Centella Asiatica, which work to control excess sebum and remove dead skin cells with low irritation. For really stubborn blemishes and cysts, look no further than Mizon’s Acence Blemish Out Pink Spot. Designed by dermatologists, this double layer spot treatment works both as an exfoliator and reduces inflammation. After two consecutive nights of use, your problem pimples will be well on the way out. Another Word on Acne In some cases, there is a limit to the results that skincare products alone can achieve. Particularly with cystic acne, the issue will rarely clear up on its own. Don’t be afraid to seek medical treatment if your acne is not improving or if it appears to be getting worse. Unfortunately, the bigger and deeper the spots, the bigger the scars they will leave and those can be particularly tricky to get rid of. If they impact the deeper layers on the skin, scarring can be quite profound. In many cases, your GP will be able to prescribe antibiotics and topical products that can help. If that doesn’t clear it up you will be looking at something even stronger like Roaccutane, which can only be prescribed by a dermatologist in Australia. If your acne is accompanied by itchiness, then don’t rule out the possibility of fungal acne as well. Take a listen back at Episode 27 if you suspect that fungal acne might be at play. Acne scars are the worst. Not only do you have to suffer through acne itself, now you’re left to deal with the scars and marks they left behind. Everybody gets them; we all hate them. Today on the Korean Beauty Show podcast we’re talking the best Korean Beauty products for fading acne scars, pronto. WHAT CAUSES ACNE SCARRING? Acne scars are caused by inflamed lesions that form on the skin. The pore swells, causing a break in the follicle wall. If the rupture occurs near the skin’s surface, the lesion is usually minor and heals quickly. Serious lesions however spill out onto the dermis and destroy healthy skin tissue. Although the skin works to repair itself, it’s finished “repair job” is never the same as before the injury, leaving evidence of the acne scar. On today’s episode we will be focusing more on the red or coloured marks left behind after acne rather than deeper, pitted scars. They require a different method to see improvement, so we can tackle them in a later episode BEST ACNE SCAR FADING INGREDIENTS There are a whole range of different beauty ingredients in K-Beauty products that are designed to fade acne scars quickly. Some of my favourite acne mark fading ingredients to look out for include: Vitamin C Vitamin C has many great benefits for the skin, including improvement in active breakouts and increased collagen production. It also provides the skin with a brightening effect that can reduce and improve the appearance of pigmentation and post-acne scars. Niacinamide This is a form of Vitamin B3 that works well for overall brightening, including reducing the appearance of uneven skin tone, redness and acne. Snail Secretion Filtrate A wonder beauty ingredient beloved by Korean Beauty fans that contains skin-friendly antioxidants, proteins, elastin, and glycolic acids. Snail mucin is especially helpful for breakouts, uneven skin tone and acne scarring. Try COSRX, Mizon and APLB. Glutathione This powerful antioxidant also has the ability to brighten and even out the skin tone. It treats acne directly and helps reduce the number of acne scars, uneven skin tone, and marks caused by acne, which is important for keeping the skin healthy in the long run. Try APLB’s Glutathione products. Some of my favourite K-Beauty picks: Pimple Treatments As the old saying goes, ‘prevention is better than a cure’. Not picking at your pimples in the first place goes a long way to minimize scarring. Subi Perfect Pimple Patch tackles breakouts quickly, painlessly and with as minimal scarring as possible. Made with medical-grade hydrocolloid, this luxury pimple patch is the thinnest, most invisible patch on the market. If you get pimples in hard-to-reach places (like the side of the nose or around your mouth) then these are your patches. The thinness, stickiness and absorptive powers of Subi’s patches means they stay in place long enough to effectively tackle the pimples that other patches can’t. It’s one of K-Beauty’s favourite ingredients. And with its ability to repair skin damage, actively hydrate and fight wrinkles and it is little wonder. Today, on the Korean Beauty show we’re going to be taking a look at the truth about snail mucin Topics Discussed WHY SNAIL MUCIN IS SO GOOD FOR SKIN Snail mucin naturally contains a whole heap of skin-friendly goodies, including proteins, elastin, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid and copper peptides. Some of the benefits include: Firming and tightening the skin Giving plumper, softer and more youthful-looking skin Reducing visible scarring (from acne and pimples) Reducing hyperpigmentation Hydrating dry, dull, rough and taut skin However, perhaps surprisingly (given how famous Koreans have made it!) the use of snails in cosmetics and medicine is not new or unique to K-Beauty products. The ancient Greeks knew of snail mucin’s potential to heal skin, and also used it internally. Despite its many benefits to the skin, people rightly often wonder how snail mucin is collected, and in particular, whether it is harmful to the snails. HOW SNAIL MUCIN IS HARVESTED? Traditional methods of harvesting snail mucin were cruel – the snails were essentially dunked in pots of water with salt, vinegar or other chemicals to force them to excrete mucin. Thankfully, the methods for harvesting snail mucin have changed considerably. These days, there are a variety of “cruelty-free” methods of snail production and slime extraction. In fact, research shows that the quality of the mucin itself depends on breeders keeping good environmental conditions for their snails. As a result, breeders themselves regulate what the snails eat, how they are kept and how the slime is extracted. This also helps in certifying snail mucin products as cruelty-free. In Italy, for example, snail mucin is extracted by immersing the snails in a special steam bath that acts like a spa for snails. The snails are not harmed in this process. In other farms, the snails are simply placed in an environment where they can move over a bumpy surface, because this causes them to make slime like they do naturally. The mucin is then harvested this way. WHAT KIND OF SNAILS ARE USED? The land snail (achatina fulica) is one commonly used breed of snail. This is the one you’ll find in COSRX’s popular snail products. WHO COLLECTS THE MUCIN? Snail mucin is collected by the snail breeders who raise the snails. IS SNAIL MUCIN CRUELTY FREE? Yes, it is possible for snail mucin to be cruelty-free. As the actual snail itself is not harmed or killed in the process of collecting the mucin, it is possible for Korean Beauty companies to obtain cruelty-free certification for their snail products. The snail mucin used in Benton’s Snail Bee High Content Essence, Steam Cream and Mask is all certified cruelty-free by PETA. Similarly, COSRX’s Advanced Snail Cream and Essence are also cruelty-free. It is NOT possible for snail mucin products to be vegan, because snail is the by-product of an animal. CAN THE QUALITY OF MUCIN DIFFER BETWEEN PRODUCTS? Yes. The quality of the snail mucin can differ. However, the thing that makes the biggest difference is the concentration of snail mucin in the actual product. The higher the concentration, the better the resulting effects on the skin. Some products, like COSRX’s Snail 96 Mucin Essence contain as much as 96% snail mucin. This means that the benefits of the mucin on the skin are maximized. Other products, like iUNIK’s Black Snail Restore Serum and APLB Healing Moisture Snail Cream combine snail mucin with other complimentary ingredient to improve the efficacy of the formula, which maximises the benefits for your skin. HOW DO I USE IT IN MY BEAUTY ROUTINE? You’ll find it in a wide range of Korean Beauty products, from essences to moisturisers, face masks and even BB Cream. Tips To see maximum results, try using it for at least 2-4 weeks. This is the same as any new skincare product; Snail mucin is suitable to use both day and night. It’s light enough to apply under makeup during the day. BUT IT’S A MUCIN! Don’t be put off by the fact that it is mucus. Despite its name, snail mucin is not gooey. It is most often light in texture, with a minimal to neutral fragrance. Due to its viscosity, it makes a great binding agent. It’s perfect to include as one of the final steps in your beauty routine when layering products. WHAT RESULTS CAN YOU EXPECT USING SNAIL MUCIN? You can expect the look and texture of ageing, damaged, acne-prone and/or scarred skin to be improved. This is because snail mucin supports natural cell regeneration and replenishes moisture to increase skin’s firmness and suppleness. SOME K-BEAUTY SNAIL PRODUCTS TO TRY APLB Healing Moisture Snail Cream – When skin is damaged and sensitive, it is more easily prone to breakouts and looks dull and lacklustre. That’s when you should reach for this gentle calming, skin repairing moisturiser. It addresses a wide range of skin concerns – from pores and dull skin to acne and fine-lines. Benton Snail Bee Set – the perfect pair to tackle blemishes, acne scarring and pigmentation. They work together to target the key signs of skin damage. COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence – made with 96% all-natural snail secretion filtrate, this is a powerful treatment that transforms the complexion. Missha Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream – this moisturising cream from one of Korea’s best loved beauty brands works beautifully with dull, damaged, acne-prone, mature and scarred skins. It helps repair and improve the look and texture to give your skin a healthy, radiant glow. SOME BY MI Snail Truecica - Formulated with Snail Truecica™ which contains black snail, and 5 types of ceramide components to strengthen skin’s barrier. This cream can be applied to any skin type without leaving it sticky – just soft and moisturised. Mizon Snail Mask – Enjoy the feeling of firm, healthy skin with this nutritious sheet mask made with Mizon’s signature snail mucin extract. What a tease! In the midst of this doomsday-esque reality that we are experiencing through the coronavirus pandemic, we thought it would be nice to travel down the world of… you guessed it—Burlesque! Earlier this month I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paul Mizon, Bedford and County Runner to discuss his phenomenal journey and progression through the years. His journey started around a lake, running 5km as he simply didn't want to pay a joining fee at the gym. He now has run 14.40 for 5km, 67 minutes over half marathon distance and still wants to go quicker. His 'keep at it' attitude and determination has seen him progress and we talk through what else has contributed to these times.
Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. Joining Tim this time is QI Elf - and Only Connect champion - Lydia Mizon, who's hoping that the klaxon buzzer thing doesn't go off when she mentions Stoppit And Tidyup, Acorn Archimedes game Fervour, Children's ITV programme Alphabet Castle, Roseanne And The Magic Mirror by Virginia Ironside, VHS-assisted board game Party Mania, and a book about a girl called Lydia who hated cress. Along the way we'll be finding out how to cope with an anxiety dream about The Fiddly Foodle Bird, recalling Hale And Pace's classic 'Irony Virginiaside' sketches whether they actually existed or not, trying to work out what rhymes with Leonardo Dicaprio, and definitely not playing the The Weakest Link PlayStation game. John Mizon runs South West Megagames, a full-time endeavour that aims to bring megagaming to the South-West of the UK (and sometimes beyond).
