Why Are Dads is a show in which hosts Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed attempt to understand what the hell it means to be the grown children of dads and other dad-like figures. You're terrible Muriel. Or is it Mariel? We watched Muriel's Wedding (1994) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want to Hear That Podcast) and our lives are just as good as an Abba song. Get ready to listen to some questionable Aussie accents as we recount this mid-90's gem that introduced the world to ICON Toni Collette.  Muriel (Collette) yearns to leave her oppressive family, evil friends and and boring town of Porpoise Spit for the big city life in Sydney. She just happens to steal thousands to get there.  Hey, if my mom handed me blank check to kick off my burgeoning MLM business I just might embezzle a grand or two to start a new life myself. Some of you might mis-remember this as a lighthearted comedy but we're here to tell you it gets dark - but only right before Muriel gets her happy ending. Indeed her life is just as good as Dancing Queen.

This week we chat with Laurene Cooper-Fox about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the Australian movie classic-turned-musical - Muriel’s Wedding! The Sydney Morning Herald commented that: "Muriel's Wedding feels like the complete package: a beloved film seamlessly updated; a central character who retains all the ambiguities that made you root for her in the first place; a conspicuously inventive score peppered with classic pop hits, and a mainstage debut that will be talked about for years. Adapting his own screenplay to the stage and into the social media present, PJ Hogan's book amplifies the Cinderella aspects of Muriel's story without sacrificing the satirical and melancholic elements that gave the film its depth and heart."FIND MORE FROM LAURENE HERE:https://www.cfphotography.com.au/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel%27s_Wedding_(musical)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel%27s_Weddinghttps://www.australianstage.com.au/201903268934/reviews/melbourne/muriel-s-wedding-%E2%80%93-the-musical.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/https://music.apple.com/au/album/muriels-wedding-the-musical-the-original-cast-recording/1325404036https://open.spotify.com/album/5LvKQzozJQw1uURRtLhREOLike us on Facebook! It's the perfect way to celebrate the Time of Valens (aka Galentine's Day). Amy and Cristina count the film among their very favorites, and Baxter had never seen it.Regardless, this viewing brought up some stuff for all three of us! We touch on such topics as philandering fathers, emotionally battered mothers, body image issues, early adulthood besties, and inspirational musicians. It's a lot more fun than it sounds? We also attempt Australian accents with varying degrees of success.

And yes, it has ABBA songs. I was thrilled to sit down and chat to Natalie Abbott (Muriel) and Stefanie Jones (Rhonda). Make no mistake, after you've seen "Hereditary" (and you really should!), you'll remember once again that she's one of our most versatile actors.  In this first visit to "Happy Sad Confused," Josh takes Toni down memory lane, from her humble beginnings in Australia, the shocking successes of "Muriel's Wedding" and "The Sixth Sense" to mixing it up with Vin Diesel for "XXX: The Return of Xander Cage".  Learn more about your ad choices. In part one of this episode, the Australian cult classic Muriel's Wedding was discussed, from the Abba slathered soundtrack to the humour and even the weirdness of the movie as a whole. Not to mention how surprisingly enjoyable we found it.   In part 2 we talked about 1994 as a year in film overall - and it was a positively stacked entry for beloved movies.   We will, unfortunately, have to put the planned discussion on Blade Runner 2049 on hold for the next month or two because...Preacher's back! Daniel Lapaine brings 'La Pain' to this episode of the pod for an exclusive - and raucous - interview about his work on Black Mirror. Lapaine - who shot to fame as a dreamy swimmer in 1994 Australian comedy Muriel's Wedding - has a very special place in the Black Mirror universe. He's in not just one, but two episodes. He makes a cameo appearance at the start of Season 1's The Entire History of You, on the interview panel sizing up Liam (Toby Kebbell). He returns to the show to take the lead in the first story of Black Museum, The Pain Addict, based on a short story by magician Penn Jillette. It's a performance that only works if the actor throws himself fully in - and Lapaine does, orgasm noises at a hospital bedside and all. Well, if Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge, who's been interviewed on the podcast) was okay with it, we're going to have to be too. Listen to our analysis of Black Museum. --For more Black Mirror stuff, follow our Twitter @BlackMirrorCrrr, join the conversation in our Facebook group or read more at mirror.co.uk/blackmirror Thanks for listening! This week on the show, in honour of the recent passing of R. Lee Ermey, we took on Stanley Kubrick's 1987 war epic, "Full Metal Jacket." Ermey's stellar performance aside, we found the second half of the movie somewhat patchy, to say the least.    In the second half, we discussed the best and worst war movies in general. For all your Apocolypse Now's, there's clearly some stinkers out there that have serious potential for a future bad movie on this podcast.    Next week on the show, we've finally taken the repeated suggestion of 1994's Muriel's Wedding from Edel Níc Cába.    Our question of the week will be:   1994: A Year in Film and T.V.   You can visit Ken's vlog channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/KayKayVlogs   The video of this weeks episode is available here: https://youtu.be/nTwgNFWnRoE    Let us know any thoughts via the usual contact channels below. This 2016 Israeli film makes its way to the States by tackling a lot of rom-com conventions we have grown accustomed to with a female lead's worth being determined by their romantic partner or lack thereof. Two previous films have also explored this idea in comedic fashion. One from our Australian friends (we promise this ends the streak of films from that penal colony) in MURIEL'S WEDDING, and the other from a gentler time when America didn't hate Adam Sandler in THE WEDDING SINGER. "Screws fall out all the time. The world is an imperfect place" This week we join the brat pack in John Hughes' 1985 coming of age comedy drama The Breakfast Club. We discover that this movie is more than just daft haircuts and angry power chords as Paul, who loved The Breakfast Club as a teenager, finds watching it again all these years later a therapeutic experience and he finally accepts he WAS Brian.  Meanwhile, Rachael reveals she was a straight A student and Andy discusses his love/hate relationship with the movie. Later, Paul decides to dress up as Ally Sheedy, which worries a confused Andy who had a crush on the actress, and, as he unleashes his anger at the makeover of his beloved ("a lovely woman ruined"), Racheal takes a look at some other movie makeover scenes including Grease, She's All That, Pretty In Pink and Muriel's Wedding. Andy continues his hot & cold relationship with The Breakfast Club by discussinghis frustration at the ending, and looks at some other movies with disappointing denouements, including It's a Wonderful Life and the first two Superman movies.  And is that a chicken drumstick in Judd Nelson's hand at the end? We love a bit of movie trivia on Spoiler, and The Breakfast Club is a veritable trivia-fest, as we discover that Rick Moranis, John Cusack and Laura Dern were all in the frame for roles in the movie, that Simple Minds weren't the original choice to record "Don't You Forget About Me", and we even find out the make and model of Brian's pen. And we end this series with another of our fiercely fought music quizzes. This time, Andy tests Paul and Rachael's knowledge of 80s movie themes and raises the stakes with two specially made mix tapes as prizes: "The Best of the 80s" for the winner, and "The Worst of the 80s" for the loser, which they MUST promise to listen to in its entirety, despite it including "Daddy's Home" by Cliff Richard. This episode of Convicted Cinephiles heads to Australia as our friend and Aussie-Canadian Drex joins the panel for an all Aussie movie cast. The guys geek out about Star Wars, Drex is majorly unimpressed with the new Terminator trailer and Matty is subjected to watching yet another soul crushing face stabbing scene in a movie.   These are our Staff Picks of the week!   Michaela brings a film that started as a short film and got the push to become a feature film called Dear White People. The film start Tyler James Williams, who got his start on Chris Rock's Everybody Hates Chris and is now on The Walking Dead. This film was a big hit at this year's Toronto International Film Festival and was a a definite win in Michaela's opinion.   Matty has some good and bad this week. The good is Jon Favreau's Chef, a fun comedy that has a lot of great appearances from stars like Scarlet Johansson and Dustin Hoffman. The bad was a little painful to Stevil. Unfortunately, Matty hated Kevin Smith's latest offering, Tusk, With an unlikable lead and terrible Canadian accents and stereotypes, Michael Parks performance wasn't enough to save this film.   Stevil needed some light fare after some of the harsher viewings on this podcast and all the Game of Thrones he was taking in, so Melissa McCarthy's Tammy was the comedy he decided to throw on. A completely unlikable title character with little redeeming qualities and a mediocre story line muddle this film until a slightly acceptable resolution and ending make this film an uneven lame duck.   Drex does NOT like Gwyneth Paltrow. He makes no secret about it and will gladly tell you his reasons. So, the movies he would like to bring to the cast are the rare gems in which the former Mrs. Coldplay bites the dust In conclusion, go see Seven and Contagion!   For the main subject of our episode on Aussie films, our panel explains why they made their choices:   "For the Aussie Cast I decided to go with Muriel's Wedding. Although I had never seen it, it stars one of my favourite actresses, Toni Collette, and looked pretty funny. I was not disappointed. This movie is totally off the wall, switching between comedy and tragedy at breakneck speeds. Collette is lovable as Muriel (Mariel) and the Abba soundtrack is totally awesome. If you have yet to see this film, delay no longer!" - @avidcinephile   "I was in the mood for a western, plain and simple. And I wanted to bring the mighty 'stach that is Selleck. But unfortunately Quigley Down Under isn't Australian made (little did I know Drex was bringing the mightiest mustache in Australia). So I went with The Propostion. This brutal tale of redemption in lawless lands, is a visceral and visual masterpiece. From the mind of Nick Cave and with direction from John Hillcoat you will not be disappointed with this honest western." - @mattydub604   "Channeling my good friend @demigodrob, I thought I'd bring another Criterion film to this Aussie cast with Walkabout. This film is both arresting in it's beauty and a nightmare that will keep you far, far away from the Australian outback. With the insane start to this film and exactly how these two children get left to their own devices in this deadly landscape, this film left a definite impression on me."  - @thestevildead   @drex is incredibly Australian, even after having been in Canada for five plus years, so his pick for the episode, The Club, is also VERY Australian. He also likes Stevil to write for him and he thinks Stevil is the greatest person he has ever met.   What is your favorite Australian made film? Do you or did you enjoy our picks? Director P.J. Hogan joins host Robin Milling to talk about his new film Mental. It's a story that is so fantastic you can't make it up. P.J. tells Robin everything that happens in the film happened to him at 12, when his philandering father, up for re-election as mayor, picked up a hitchhiker named Shaz, played by Toni Collette to watch over his wild brood while his mom was 'on holiday' in a mental institution.  Telling stories from his life is not new to the Australian filmmaker whose debut film Muriel's Wedding was all about his sister. P.J. says Mental is a comedy because laughter is the best medicine when you come from crazy. He tells Robin, 'As far as mental goes I'm in the trenches with it because my sister is schizophrenic, my brother is bipolar and I'm the father of two autistic children. So I live with it every day and that's why I made the film a comedy.' P.J. hopes that underneath the laughs there is a serious message that will come across about how to deal with mental illness whether or not it's personal to you and to re-examine what is normal.
