It's another “No Dumb Questions!” You email us to ask, we sit down to answer. There are no dumb questions, but there might be some dumb answers. Today's focus is . . . Formula 1 drivers! What makes one better than another? Mistakes, for one thing. No room for error in the big leagues. Unless you're Lance Stroll, in which case, well . . . his pops owns the team, so . . . UGH, DAD, I TOLD YOU, I CLEANED MY ROOM ALREADY BUT THEN DANNY RIC CAME IN AND MESSED IT UP IT'S ALL HIS FAULT. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. For this episode, we're borrowing the No Dumb Questions framework from Ross's old “Speed Secrets” podcast. Related Trivia: This is our 25th episode! NDQ normally lives on this show's Patreon (link below), but we felt like celebrating. This episode was produced by Mike Perlman. Jeff, Ross, and Sam are not his dads; that would be nepotism. Or the 1987 Touchstone Pictures film “Three Men and a Baby,” which starred Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, and Steve Guttenberg. Jeff would definitely be the Danson character in that scenario. Or maybe that's Ross? Sam is probably Selleck, but only because he's dreaming now, Selleck had a rad mustache in that flick and Sam has never been able to grow a proper lip rug. The one time he tried, he ended up looking like a cross between Pablo Escobar and a child hobo. We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts. Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and a world-renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a champion race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.
Today's episode is about two massive stars: Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Selleck. First, Goldberg speaks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about her new memoir, Bits and Pieces, which touches on her relationship with her mother, the way she navigated beauty standards growing up, and what it means to grapple with grief over time. Then, Selleck joins NPR's Scott Simon to discuss You Never Know, his initial reluctance to take on his role in Magnum P.I. and his thoughts on being labeled a "mustachioed hunk." Alright, let's get one thing out of the way. The episode title ISN'T what you think it is. But, since Craig spent most of the episode with alcohol poisoning, the guys had to improvise. And that's when things went awry. Bruce Willis, Netflix, entitled rich people, celebrities farting, crab appetizers, deck hockey, more Selleck, Bible clickbait... they cover it all. (Yes, even the unfortunate episode title.)
It has been four years since the last episode of Magnum P.I. we covered (in-universe I mean... it's been 7 days since WE last covered Magnum) and since you're all dying to know let's reveal that yes, of course the show still wants to make fun of uggo women with glasses! Unbelievably we have a second straight episode where an old friend/flame is coming back into our heroes lives but this time Magnum's old tutor says aloha as she recruits Magnum for a very special mission: find a missing dolphin!Along the way we meet colorful characters, tight pants, mustaches, and oh yeah, terrorists strap a bomb to the missing dolphin and attempt to blow up a yacht containing the president of a fake nation. Magnum P.I. ladies and gentlemen!
Ah Hawaii, the last recognized state to join the United States of America (take that Guam!), it's a land that brought us Lu'aus, ukuleles, leis, and Hawaiian shirts. But that's not all... it also brought Tom Selleck showing off his balls in tiny shorts! Van, Brian, and Spencer trudge their way through the gun-totin', ugly woman-hatin' piece of 80s history that is Magnum P.I., and the guys fumble their way through watching a man try and guilt a woman into loving him

Tom Selleck and his moustache star as a cowboy in this week's movie: Crossfire Trail! This TV film, originally aired on January 21st in 2001, is a throwback to the classic cowboy tales of old. It tells the story of Selleck trying to honour his best friend's dying wish. Sure, it doesn't really do anything new for the Western genre, but it was the most-watched TV movie of all time until 2007 so surely it's got to be good! As artists, we are often faced with moments when we have to find ways to embrace and accept ourselves. Especially when getting started in the music industry, our insecurities and doubts can hold us back. Self-acceptance doesn't happen overnight. It is a journey that we're all on as we chase our dreams. I'm so excited to welcome Ben Selleck onto the show to talk all about embracing who we are as songwriters and artists. The quote for this episode is by Lindsey Stirling: “Sometimes, being different feels a lot like being alone. But with that being said, being true to that and being true to my standards and my way of doing things in my art and my music, everything that has made me feel very different in the end, it has made me the happiest.” Ben and I discuss many ways we have to embrace ourselves as artists. From embracing our voices and songwriting styles to accepting our strengths and weaknesses as musicians, we cover it all in a very open and honest way. Are you enjoying Write on Track? “My visualization was imagining myself and my horse in a protective white light, and that we were protected over the jumps, the whole course. The next competition, I remember thinking, ‘I don't know if this is going to work, but we'll give it a try.' We went in and that fear started to come up, I could feel it. I just closed my eyes for a minute and envisioned this white light and rode really well.” For years, Hannah Selleck—like most athletes—believed the key to success was pushing her body to the max. But in 2018, the professional equestrian show jumper fell, got her foot caught in a magnetic stirrup, and sustained severe fractures to her tibia and fibula. Recovery from that setback taught her that sometimes, patience and rest pay off more than strain and effort. New treatment and performance techniques helped her cope with the unexpected emotional impact of her fall. And a friend and fellow rider kept her horses in competition when she couldn't, which gave her a taste of the owner role—something she realized could also be fulfilling for her later on. Now, she's fine-tuned the parts of her mental training that complement the physical, including visualization and restorative yoga. She works them into her routine regularly, recognizing they're just as critical to success as her time in the ring or the gym. All this has made her not only a stronger, better athlete, but also a more self-aware, kind, and balanced person, she says.
