On the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, 2009, I interviewed Nick Cave in (what I recall was) the Park Hyatt's restaurant located in the Yorkville area of Toronto, Ontario. The occasion was to discuss his then new novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, and we also covered his work with Warren Ellis and the filmmaker John Hillcoat to score the film, The Road, why his new novel's depiction of sexuality was revealing for both men and women, the marvels of emerging app technology and Apple's fledgling iPhone, compartmentalizing his songwriting and literary work and heading to an office every day to get those things done, and other subjects as well. This interview was originally broadcast on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show! on November 11, 2009. See Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their Wild God Tour. 1931. It stars Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, John Hurt, Danny Huston and David Wenham. The second is The Nightingale (2018), a historical psychological thriller written and directed by Jennifer Kent. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/madmike3/message

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce  and Robert Duvall.  My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout.  The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2  raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of  civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive.  In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism.    Which film is king of the outback/queen of the end times?Find out!

Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin

Nick Cave is a musician, songwriter, author, and actor, best known as the frontman of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, though is also beloved for his early group, The Birthday Party. Albums from The Boatman's Call (1997) to Skeleton Tree (2016) showcase Cave's ability to craft emotionally charged and intellectually stimulating compositions filled with hauntingly poetic lyrics. Beyond music, Cave's authored several books, including And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989) and Stranger Than Kindness (2021). His collaborations with director John Hillcoat on movies like The Proposition (2005) and Lawless (2012) have received critical acclaim. And he maintains an open and engaging dialogue with his fans through his newsletter, The Red Hand Files. This podcast was recorded the day after the conclusion of Caves's duo tour with Radiohead's bassist, Colin Greenwood, in Los Angeles. A few days after recording this podcast, he used The Red Hand Files to write the following message to his fans: “After I stepped off stage at the final show, I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit, ate some seafood with Colin, and then headed to the aftershow, where I hung out with some old friends for an hour or so before going back to the hotel with Susie. We stayed up for a few hours and then tried to sleep, but I was hyped up, so I took a sleeping pill at 4 am — which was a dumb idea because I had an interview that morning with Rick Rubin for his podcast. Anyway, when I woke up, I put on a grey suit, jumped into the car with my driver to go to Malibu, did Rick's podcast (which could turn out quite interesting as I'm not sure the sleeping pill had completely worn off), then started back to L.A. In the car, I began to feel a bit rough, so we parked up at Zuma Beach, where I threw off my clothes and jumped into the sea in an unsuccessful attempt to restore myself; then we carried on to the hotel, where I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit before heading to Book Soup for [a] signing . . . After the signing, I returned to the hotel feeling tired and weird, sat up with Susie for a while, went to bed, woke up about 2 am, threw up in the sink and collapsed unconscious on the bathroom floor. Susie found me there and hauled me back onto the bed; my assistant was called to the hotel, some extremely handsome emergency paramedics turned up, a lovely nurse arrived and fixed me to a drip, and later, I spoke to an eighty-nine-year-old saint of a doctor who diagnosed an acute gastro event.” ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra ------ House of Macadamias https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/tetra ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra ------

In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, guest host Joe Scott explores the lives of star-crossed lovers as well as love-crossed country music stars in the award-winning Showtime miniseries "George and Tammy." Created by Abe Sylvia ("Nurse Jackie," "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," "Hap and Leonard," and "The Affair"), all six episodes of the miniseries were directed by Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat. A veteran helmer of music videos, Hillcoat first broke out in the world of cinema with the brutally austere 2005 western "The Proposition," a movie many critics compared to the Cormac McCarthy novel "Blood Meridian." Interestingly enough, McCarthy agreed with these comparisons, going so far as to give the director permission to adapt his then-unreleased novel “The Road,” which Hillcoat translated to the big screen in 2009.

In this roundtable, we host a rich conversation between Director John Hillcoat and Cinematographer Benoit Delhomme. You don't want to miss this special tête-à-tête from these longtime collaborators and friends. They talk with us about a bounty of topics including how they first met, the two incredible films they teamed up together on: Lawless and The Proposition, and a life altering premonition they each experienced... (This Film Roundtable conversation would not be taking place if they hadn't listened to their intuition, but you have to listen to hear the full story.) They share anecdotes about the trials and tribulations as well as the magic that is the process of filmmaking and talk about how shooting in Australia isn't just shooting in another country, it is like shooting on another planet: the light, the landscape, the heat and the flies! They also share how creative Benoit had to get at times to light scenes without lights (because of the heat!) as well as reflecting on what he might have done differently at this stage in his career. They discuss the process of storyboarding a film and how important it can be but also how equally imperative it is to be able to put that pre-visualization aside and surrender to the organic flow of the actors and the moment. They then discuss film vs digital (Lawless was one of the first films to be shot on the Alexa Raw) and the heartbreak they experienced when the film was not screened at Cannes using the film print they made. They also talk about the “Netflix” look and how the richness of cinema is fading away, and how much more it could change after this past year on Zoom and what our eyes are getting accustomed to. They chat about lensing and aspect ratio and Benoit shares his experience shooting with the new BLACKWING 7 lenses. This conversation is full of teachings and such a treat!!

More Movies Please!

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are selling some highly illegal moonshine and doing our damned best to stay away from the creepiest Guy Pearce we’ve ever seen in the 2012 film from John Hillcoat, Lawless. Have you ever seen something so terrifying, so gut-wrenching, so deep-down disturbing that you wonder how you’ll ever be able to sleep without nightmares again? Well, if you don’t want to experience that, then make sure to avoid looking at Guy Pearce in this film. He’s taking creepy to a whole new level in this one. From his horrid haircut to his no eyebrow-having face to his assault on, well, everyone, he’s just, as John Ralphio would say, the WOOOOORST! I mean, the good ol’ Bondurant boys just want to make some illicit alcohol out in the forests of Virginia and sell it to the locals. Is that so bad? Come on, Prohibition’s on. People need to get booze into their bodies somehow! Why can’t it be a trio of enterprising capitalists like them? Cracking down on them for breaking just a little teensy law is… You know what? I’m just going to say it. It’s downright un-American. They’ve got their own thriving small business going. They’re pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, as the most out of touch and harmful among us like to say. They’re what we all strive to be. And yet, they’re getting hassled by the law at every turn. Their distilleries are raided and blown up. Their throats are sawn open. Poor Shia LaBeouf can’t even give the girl he’s sweet on a nice sundress in peace. All because they wanted to reach a little way above their lot in life… What a damn, cryin’ shame. [Editor’s note: none of this is to say that we’re supporting the manufacture and distribution of the “harder” drugs out there. Just because those previous paragraphs made it sound like we condone breaking the law doesn’t mean we want there to be heroin flooding the streets or anything. Sheesh.] If you’re a fan of the film, The Proposition, then you’re likely to enjoy this one. We did a previous episode on that one (find the link to it below). They share the same director and screenwriter, so you know this one’s going to be good and intense. Also, this one’s a lot less dusty. The’s some amazing cinematography and sound. This one was designed so well that you’re likely to feel you’re actually living in the 1930s. It’s a gritty story with some real heart. Oh, and it’s got Tom Hardy. What more could you ask for? This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Jonathan and Rem discuss The Road from 2009 and directed by John Hillcoat. Listener Feedback  Liz Irwin This is one of those incredibly depressing movies. It was a really well done film but not one I can watch more than once. Sue Lavictoire Read the book and saw the movie only years ago and as usual they were different but they were good. Robert Sedler The Road is one of the best post-apocalyptic films to come out of a genre that's had its fair share of both highs and lows. Bleak, colorless, and unforgiving, the raw landscape of the world is all too believable. Add some fantastic acting performances into the mix and you have essential Sci--Fi viewing. (Great Podcast, guys, keep up the good work!) Jordan Bonaparte A dark and painful movie/book to watch/read, as a father I find some beauty in the relationship between the main characters, but as a human living amongst other humans I find the story and setting very believable, and that's scary as hell. I would say this is a much watch for anyone into dystopian fiction... Beautifully tragic. Seth Heasley Love it, but don't really want to watch it again. Being a father, this hits really close to home. Josh Adams (from the ‘I Hate Critics' Podcast) For all of the critical talk about despair, drab colors, and lack of life in The Road, I found quite a bit to hold onto. Viggo Mortensen's performance as the father, doing everything he can to maintain some semblance of reality for his child, is completely unheralded. Maybe it's his gaunt frame, maybe it's his piercing visage, but I found a new depth to him as an actor that Eastern Promises and Lord of the Rings had previously not roused in me. I found myself in his shoes, feeling the tension the entire film, waiting for something awful to happen to him or his son. That tension and the bleak nature of the world around them lent more power to the few glimpses of joy the film gives them. When you consider the post-apocalyptic genre, substance usually sits in the far back with respect to style. Director John Hillcoat crafted a substantive film from Cormac McCarthy's novel that I felt a part of, bleak or not. It is a film that I felt was far more what our current world would produce than The Walking Dead or something similar. I hate to speak of this feeling as something only I own, but the father-son dynamic between Mortensen and Smit-McPhee is, I feel, an excellent representation of all the feelings all fathers have for their sons. The need to protect, the need to teach, the need to pass on. Those 'survivalist' feelings, to me, run parallel to the way our world has always been, and the film seems to understand that. Ergo, as the father and the son go, so does the world. It's not a feeling exclusive to parents, or fathers for that matter, but it's certainly something I feel strongly about, and something that seems to be instinctive. I love this film, and I feel very strongly that it is an unheralded, subtle masterpiece. Alicia Postigo Hey guys! First, I love your show. Second, I enjoyed this this movie very much - of course I love Viggo Mortensen so I'm not very objective. The movie is very touching. I was surprised when I first saw it because I don't usually dig post-apocalyptic movies, but the father-son relationship got me. My favorite quote is "You carry the fire [What fire?] The one inside you."   The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast is a member of the Podcastica Network, visit Podcastica.com The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast is partially funded by Patreon.
