How can we teach our audience new storytelling rules in the middle of our story? Following on from our episodes on establishing tone through action lines and through character, this is what we have been building up to: how to pull off a tonal switch… that does not throw the audience out of the film. And, in particular, how to pull that off on the page when writers don't have framing, lighting, music, editing, etc. at our disposal? With that goal in mind, Mel and Chas dissect specific moments on the pages of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU and SWISS ARMY MAN. While there are definite craft tools identified - rhythm of action lines, varying use of unfilmmables and metaphors, establishing language patterns - the two big takeaways are: (1) pulling off a tonal shift takes a lot of setup; and (2) when the time comes, contrast on the page is key. Editors - Andrew S. Eisen ACE, Terel Gibson ACE and Katheryn Naranjo Hiring editors for SKELETON CREW was akin to casting actors, considering how essential each editor's background and style would be in shaping the series. Kat, for instance, found her mark through her work on STRANGER THINGS which resonated with the show's tone of adventure. Meanwhile, Terrell's experience with Marvel projects like HAWKEYE proved that he would be up to the demands and rigors of a VFX heavy tv series. Finally, Andrew's extensive Star Wars history positioned him as invaluable in guiding the new team. Capturing the right tone was crucial for the editors, as the show combined elements of adventure and comedy with darker themes. Andrew, Kat and Terel discussed the significance of striking a balance, especially when the storyline demanded a shift from lightheartedness to seriousness. Jude Law's transformation from a seemingly rogue character to a complex anti-hero was a key point of focus, with the team ensuring his evolution was believable and engaging. SKELETON CREW, created by Christopher Ford and Jon Watts, takes place in the same time frame as THE MANDALORIAN, post RETURN OF THE JEDI, pre-THE FORCE AWAKENS. It's a coming-of-age story about four kids who make a discovery on their home planet that leads them to getting lost in the galaxy and the adventure to find their way back home. ANDREW S. EISEN, ACE Considering the cinematic approach that Andrew applies to THE MANDALORIAN, THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT and SKELETON CREW, it's no surprise to see his name in the credits of big sci-fi / action films like TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION and THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2. TEREL GIBSON, ACE Prior to joining the Star Wars universe for SKELETON CREW, Terel dropped by the MCU to cut HAWKEYE. He's also known for his feature work on movies such as CUCKOO (2024), SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (2018), READY OR NOT (2019) and THE FIGHTER (2010). KAT NARANJO Kat started her journey on Season 1 of STRANGER THINGS as an assistant, but over the following seasons started picking up full time editorial duties as well. She also assisted editor Dean Zimmerman ACE on the features, THE ADAM PROJECT and FREE GUY. Earlier in her career, Kat assisted on HALT AND CATCH FIRE and served as post coordinator on ONE TREE HILL. If you achieve success by not being your authentic self, is it still success? American Fiction (2023) strives to answer this question with the excellent Jeffery Wright leading the charge, supported by a strong cast. An earlier film starring LaKeith Stanfield, Sorry To Bother You (2018), posed a similar query. Does either film reach a definite conclusion? Listen to find out. In this episode we welcome Abdaljawad Omar back to the podcast. This is another slightly edited livestream that we've converted to an audio podcast. You can check out the video on our YouTube channel, we'll put that link in the show notes. And Also just to note that we've continued to put lots of content out there, including an interview with Boots Riley from The Coup also the director and creator of the film Sorry To Bother You and the hit series I'm A Virgo. We talked to him about labor organizing, the strike wave, solidarity with Palestine and getting principled anticapitalist art through the gauntlet that is Hollywood. I really wanted to get an audio version of this episode with Abdaljawad out this week. Many will know that Refaat Alareer was assassinated this week by the Israeli military. And while we don't talk about Refaat in this conversation directly, I needed to go back and listen again to Abdaljawad's commentary on resistance and on mourning and melancholy in the Palestinian context. I hope that this conversation will be therapeutic for others in a way that enables you to continue to put one foot in front of the other and continue to struggle and resist in whatever capacity you can. And in doing so I hope that we can honor Refaat memory and all of the thousands of other martyrs as we continue to seek to find courageous ways support the struggle for Palestinian liberation, which is an important front in the struggle for the liberation of all people. Just a note this conversation was recorded back on November 30th amid the prisoner exchanges, so if that portion of the conversation where we discuss that feels a bit dated that is the reason why, but it still feels like an important and pertinent discussion nonetheless. We will include the pieces we discussed in the show notes. Lastly I will say that we are launching our Sylvia Wynter study group in the beginning of January you can find out more about that on patreon, and becoming a patron is the best way to support the show, but also to keep up with all of our episodes whether they are released first on YouTube or via this podcast feed. Links: "Can the Palestinian Mourn?" - Abdaljawad Omar's piece (the primary subject of discussion) Judith Butler "The Compass of Mourning" (the piece Abdaljawad responds to) Fundraiser for Sekou Odinga (mentioned in episode) 'Army and Arabs': truth, play, and illusions in the West Bank (another piece written by Abdaljawad that we briefly touch upon)

It is a pleasure to welcome rapper Lyrics Born to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. He relocated to the United States from his birthplace of Tokyo, Japan, right around the time hip-hop music was exploding on the East Coast. From the moment he heard Sugar Hill Gang's 1980 classic “Rapper's Delight,” the Bay Area hip-hop luminary knew he found his calling. 25 years later, Lyrics Born obliterated stereotypes of what an MC is “supposed to” look like and captured the hearts of countless fans who gravitate to his distinctive voice. He is the only Asian-American MC to release 10 studio albums and the first to play major music festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza. He is the first Asian-American rapper to release a greatest hits compilation; he's pumped out multiple smash singles throughout his career. From “Callin' Out” and “I Like It, I Love It” to “I Changed My Mind” and “Coulda Woulda Shoulda,” his material has always retained a musically eclectic feel. The self-proclaimed “funkiest rapper alive” carries on his tradition of weaving funk and soul into classic, boom-bap Hip Hop on Quite A Life. Without the influence of icons such as the late James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Zapp & Roger, Lyrics Born admits he would not be who he is today—coupled with his love of rap pioneers such as KRS-One, Rakim, and Snoop Dogg. The music is the perfect hip-hop and funk-flavored gumbo. He expanded his empire into film since establishing himself among the upper echelon of indie Hip Hop artists.Lyrics Born appeared in films such as Boots Riley's critically acclaimed Sorry To Bother You and the Netflix film Always Be My Maybe, which starred Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves. He is also the host of the popular web-based cooking show Dinner in Place. Originally launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dinner in Place has gained popularity over the years with three successful seasons. Now entering its fourth season, Lyrics Born stepped up the production value for the series with an entire film crew and introducing celebrity guests. The series promises an even more exciting culinary experience celebrating diversity and multiculturalism. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lyrics Born previewed the new season of Dinner in Place and spoke about some of the dishes that he made this season, including an Everything Bagel Sushi Roll and the Japanese Convenience Store 3x Egg Salad Sandwich that he made with Top Chef icon Chris Cosentino.

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode take a look at offices and office politics on screen. Mark is joined by director Terry Gilliam who, back in 1985, created one of the most influential and iconic depictions of an on-screen office - Brazil. They discuss the Stanley Kubrick film which inspired Brazil's set design, Terry's own experience as an office drone and why his cult classic film still resonates today. And Ellen investigates office politics in two very different comedy films, made nearly four decades apart - 1980's 9 to 5 and 2018's Sorry To Bother You. First, she speaks to legendary screenwriter Patricia Resnick, who co-wrote 9 to 5 in her mid-20s. Patricia discusses how she came to work on the seminal satire of sexism at work, and reveals the real-life stories that influenced her script. Ellen then talks to musician, activist and filmmaker Boots Riley, whose visionary debut film Sorry To Bother You focuses on a black telemarketer who achieves success when he discovers he can use his 'white voice' on sales calls. They discuss how the film was inspired by Boots' own successful stint in telesales, and why absurdist humour is so well suited for office-set stories. Boots Riley is known nowadays for his work as a writer, but he's been making waves as an artist for years. In his early 20s, he was the frontman and founder of the Coup, a fiercely political hip-hop group from the Bay Area. But in recent years, Boots has made his way over to film-making. In 2018, he wrote and directed his first ever feature film: Sorry To Bother You. If you saw it, you know it is hilarious and scary and insightful and generally very bonkers. And then Boots had another idea. His new show I'm A Virgo takes the word bonkers to new heights, literally. It's a story about a 13-ft-tall giant, a Black teenager living in the Bay Area. But the show's not about his super powers. It's about how he sees himself, and the little personal things about him — like his star sign. I'm a Virgo is a great show, but this isn't an interview about I'm a Virgo. Boots Riley is a writer. And his union, the Writers Guild of America, has been on strike since May. On Bullseye, we'll talk about what is at stake in the dispute between the WGA and the studio heads - represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Plus, we'll get into his early career as a rapper and his roots in activism.
As the Writers Guild of America strike enters its eighth week, David Sirota sits down with writer, director, musician, and activist Boots Riley to discuss the ongoing labor struggle, as well as his radical new TV show. In all of Boots' work runs a deep commitment to social justice and organized labor. In 2018, Boots released the celebrated film Sorry to Bother You, an absurdist dark comedy about race and class politics set in the world of telemarketing. Now, Boots speaks with David about his fantastical new TV series I'm A Virgo, which is garnering rave reviews.Boots also discusses his roots in political activism and the importance of the writers strike and how its visibility is crucial to the resurgent U.S. labor movement.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: ‘Sorry To Bother You' Director Boots Riley On WGA Strike, Struggle, Solidarity, Sacrifice & AI – Guest Column (Deadline, 2023) I'm A Virgo (Prime Video, 2023) BONUS: On next Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, we'll be sharing our interview with Brandon Tizol, a New York-based organizer who was part of the campaign to pass the Build Public Renewables Act in the state. If you'd like access to Lever Time Premium, which includes extended interviews and bonus content, head over to LeverNews.com to become a supporting subscriber. If you'd like to leave a tip for The Lever, click the following link. What makes a great title for a film? Should it encapsulate the essence of the story, tell us something via symbolism about the characters or locations involved, be instantly familiar and memorable or generate intrigue? No, like everything important in life, size is the most important quality which is why this week we're looking at the Top 5 Movies With Long Titles. SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (2018) is a scorching satire-cum-fantasy comedy in which the skint Cassius "Cash" Green (LaKeith Stanfield) gets a job at telemarketing firm RegalView and becomes a huge success by using his White Voice. Promoted to the executive floor to become a Power Caller as his colleagues unionize around him, Cash's life is never the same again after meeting CEO Steve Lift (Armie Hammer) whose company WorryFree promises lifelong job security and housing in exchange for what looks suspiciously like slave labour amid pastel-hued prisonlike living conditions. Writer/Director Boots Riley provides a debut to remember with the early establishment of a unique and playful visual tone complementing the absurd magical realism of the final act and a memorable rapping scene in which the audience is confronted with the dehumanisation of racism that might provoke laughter or feelings of extreme discomfort, probably both. This one comes highly rated from the Bad Dads, check it out. XAVIER RIDDLE AND THE SECRET MUSEUM was Reegs's attempt to double down on the whole long titles thing and shamelessly exploit a popular US kids tv show in the hope of securing a few new listeners. If you did find yourself here keen to hear what two Jerseymen thought of the Charles Schultz inspired artwork and wholesome historical content coupled with discussions about problem-solving and whether children should have beards or not, then you are in luck because that's exactly what you'll get. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... The HBS hosts sit down with Dr. Jason Read to talk about how to understand work in the 21st C.In this episode, Jason Read (Philosophy, University of Southern Maine) joins us to examine the Boots Riley‘s film Sorry To Bother You (2018) and what it might be able to tell us about the dystopic situation of the 21st C. worker. Why has it become so important that the worker demonstrate that they “love” their work? How much of our work demands “emotional labor”? Why is it necessary for (some) workers to abdicate their real or “authentic” voice in order to survive? How have we become so accustomed to accepting less and less, even as more and more is demanded of us?Are workers in the 21st C. just a pot of boiling frogs?Full episode notes at this link:http://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-39-work/
