John Keane is a veteran producer, engineer, and musician who has been involved in the creation of many gold and multi-platinum records. He is best known for his work with R.E.M, Widespread Panic, The Indigo Girls, Robert Earl Keen, and too many more to list. He started John Keane Studios in Athens, Georgia in 1981. John became an expert on subjects such as record production, home recording, and Pro Tools. Not only did John teach a Pro Tools course for the University of Georgia's Music Business Program, but he is also the author of the popular Pro Tools book, The Musician's Guide to Pro Tools (McGraw-Hill). He has also created Online Pro Tools, a series of Pro Tools instructional videos.John was so well known for his studio work here in Athens, many of the artist he worked with would bring other musicians to record with John as well. David Barbee well known for his studio work in Athens as well, actually learned in Keane's studio. The tales that come out of those studios during the late 70's and 80's continue to flow through the music community as cherished memories still today. John still continues with the “newbies” coming out of Athens today with the same vigor as those days. He continues to strive to keep them relevant to the times but still keeping the “Athens Vibe” alive. My conversation with John was one for the top shelf on my Podcast, AthCastMusic and one that will have a special place in my memories. There are so many ways to get paid for your work in the age of digital music, that I admit that I'm confused as to who exactly pays what. One thing I do know is that the people who attended the presentation by the MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective) at this year's TAXI Road Rally were SO glad they went! They were so grateful that I've invited one the MLC's top executives (Serona Elton, Head of Educational Partnerships) to join us on this week's TAXI TV. I've met with her on Zoom, and she's really good at explaining why you really could have money just sitting there waiting for you, and what you can do to collect it! Serona is also the Director of the Music Business Program at the University of Miami, my alma mater, so I like her even more!!!

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Dyson Knight, Baha Men lead singer, as he releases a solo single through NSCC's Music Business Program. At Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), everyone in the Music Department is aware of a Bahamian student who has achieved international fame in the music industry. Dyson Knight, integral member of Grammy award-winning group Baha Men (memorable for their international hit single Who Let the Dogs Out?), is enrolled in the college's Music Production and Engineering program, and he is releasing his new single Feeling The Magic today. Knight ended up at NSCC due to a convergence of circumstances: “I went through a series of challenges post a near fatal car crash in 2021. I felt a strong need to reevaluate my life. One of the things I wanted to act on is my transition from being a frontline singer of Baha Men to taking a role as an engineer/producer/manager of the band. So, although daunting, I decided to move to Canada to study Music Production and Audio Engineering at NSCC in Dartmouth. I ultimately chose this school because it allows me to be with my older children who live in Halifax.” Knight has been mostly flying under the radar ever since he arrived in Canada, but that's about to change, as he is set to make waves with the release of his new single Feeling the Magic. This release came out of a contest held every year by the Music Department at NSCC. The Producer Challenge is a competition in which Music Production students are divided into teams tasked with writing and recording a song in one week. The songs are then evaluated and judged by a panel of local music industry people, and this year's first-place prize was to have the winning song be commercially released by NSCC's Music Business class. This Music Business program, offered at the Ivany Campus in Dartmouth, NS, is a graduate certificate program, led by industry veteran Evan Newman. It began last year, where the inaugural class launched the Lulo Music Group. The team of producers which included Knight won the contest with a song called Feeling the Magic. The song was written and sang by Dyson, and because the finished product was a collaborative effort among students, it nudged Knight to explore avenues a bit outside of the Caribbean pop that has mainly been his calling card so far. The result was Feeling The Magic, a change of style for Knight, but still a reflection of his continued dedication to creating captivating music. The song is an upbeat funk-disco track with an infectious bass line that will invite you to dance. It has an encouraging and optimistic message, and it evokes positivity and carefree energy. Feeling The Magic is out today. Vinyl records sold more units than CDs in the U.S. last year -- for the first time since 1987. Larry Miller, clinical professor and director of Music Business Program at NYU Steinhardt, joins to discuss what's behind the revival of vinyl and vinyl fanatics weigh in on why they covet the medium. For one I notice the wait times. I just got a record a few weeks ago that I ordered in May. Also variety and value. They'll be multiple pressings/colors of the same album, and limited pressings that cause value to skyrocket as soon as pressings are shipped out. — Andrew (The Aretha Version) (@SoulAtlantic) March 13, 2023 My wife bought me a record player recently, as well as a really awesome bluetooth / wired Marshall speaker. Sold off almost all my CDs about 10 years ago. Now only do Apple Music streaming and yes, vinyl! Bought this #DirtyDozenBrassBand album years ago. Sounds great! pic.twitter.com/xCIMTl7B6A — Alex Weider (@SnacksandFacts) March 13, 2023 1)since most computers no longer come with dvd/cd player, it discourages buying CDs. The industry has encouraged buying albums& songs on line— in the cloud. It requires an extra purchase of a DVD/CD player to own CDs.2) I prefer owning a thing, CD or vinyl, not “airwaves”. — Imagine (@IF56229334) March 13, 2023

During this Kingdom Building Conversation (KBC) with Brinson, Trig discusses his 10th album, Throw the Crown with him. We get behind the beard and the dark shades that we have seen so consistently over the years and better understand the mindset behind his approach, including thoughts on album construction, how we show up during this time, and creating multiple streams of income for your ministry. We also get to know the lighter side of Brinson during the lightning round! Brinson’s Bio Don’t let the dark shades and black beard fool you. Brinson is not trying to disguise anything. In fact, he’s trying to do the opposite – share the innermost parts of himself through hip hop. Such transparency often manifests itself in songs about his love for Jesus and those in his community. It will also be revealed in heart-gripping tales like “Shoulda Told ‘Em” or “Breaking Down” where the author exposes his regrets and honest emotions. But there’s raw energy in his rhymes too. Brinson is not afraid to make bold statements (“Don’t Rap No More”) or simply share the joy of a life that has been made pure and free in the sight of the Savior. His passions are backed by over a decade of experience and training as an ordained minister and studies in the renowned Music Business Program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. He is a 2011 graduate of the SOMMET Ministry School, has traveled and performed his music on international stages, and was recognized as an Honoree at Atlanta’s Holy Hip Hop Awards. It all led to his founding of GodChaserz Entertainment (GCE) which has since released over 20 Christ-centered hip hop albums by a roster of artists designed to inspire, uplift, and entertain. The works of Brinson and his GCE family have been covered by various media outlets including ESPN.com, NPR, S.O.U.L. Magazine, DaSouth.com, The Houston Chronicle, The Wade-O Radio Show and Rapzilla.com. In 2012, the company partnered with Syntax Distribution for the release of his No Other Heroes album and saw videos for their releases featured on national television stations such as JCTV, GMC, and WayTV.

States have begun relaxing restrictions on a range of outdoor activities as the weather heats up and the Covid case numbers slowly come down in some areas. Regardless of the success of these "Phase 1" reopening plans live concerts, where I earn my living and experience some of my greatest joys, will be among the last things to come back as we knew them (though it's exciting to see some bands experimenting with drive-in concerts and other outside the box ideas) So this week I speak with my good friend Chuck Morris, legendary concert promoter and longtime head of AEG Rocky Mountains, which has dominated the Colorado live music scene even as LiveNation and other behemoths have swallowed most of the industry whole. I intended to speak with Chuck about what we should expect for live music in the near future, but that'll have to wait for another episode because Chuck's amazing history in the music business was simply too hard to ignore. He's been right there at the start with some of the most successful bands of the last 50 years and those stories are worth sharing with you all.In 1971, before The Eagles had even recorded a record, Chuck brought them to play some of their first ever gigs in Aspen and Boulder, starting a decades-long friendship spanning hundreds of shows together. On U2's first trip to Colorado in 1980 Chuck took them to see Red Rocks, convinced that soon they'd be big enough to play that legendary venue. Just three years later, Chuck booked them at Red Rocks for a show that became U2's live album "Under A Blood Red Sky". Chuck recently moved on from running AEG day-to-day to fulfil another dream; creating a Music Business Program at Colorado State University. It's simply the next remarkable chapter in the story of one of my favorite characters in all of music. Politics of Truth is brought to you by Osiris Media. Executive Producer is Adam Caplan. How To Fix The Music Business

My guest on the show today is one of the original gangstas of the digital music business: Larry Miller. Half a decade before Apple launched iTunes, Larry was carving a path. In 1998, he co-founded a2b music, one of the first digital music distribution companies. He went on to become President of Reciprocal Music, another groundbreaking digitial distribution & technology company, and later co-founded the Or Music label, which won a Grammy with their artist Los Lonely Boys. These days, Larry is the Director of the NYU Steinhardt Music Business Program, where he’s shaping the intellect of young people who will write the next chapter in the history of the music business. There’s a very wise saying: History is written by the victors. Here’s the accepted history of the digital music business: The major labels were clueless about the internet and were doing nothing until Napster appeared and killed the music business. Luckily, Steve Jobs and Apple saved the day by inventing digital downloads and selling them in iTunes. True veterans of the early digital music business know that things were a bit more complex than that. It was an exciting time and things evolved very quickly, too fast to keep up with. The truth is that starting in the mid-90’s, many technology pioneers were working closely with the major labels to shape the digital future of the music business. It was an incredible time of experimentation and learning. Of course the ideas weren’t all viable, so the labels cautiously dabbled, thinking they’d control the timetable of how these new technologies would roll out. After all, that’s how it always worked whenever a new format came along. Of course this time they were wrong. Napster came along and burned all the cautious optimism to the ground. Steve Jobs had great timing, arriving when the majors were fatigued from fighting and desperate for an easy fix to complex problems. So a new history was written, and the story of what came before was brushed away like ashes. We did this podcast over an early breakfast at the Mansion Diner at 86th & York Avenue, hitting record and chatting amongst the sounds of New Yorkers waking up to a gorgeous Fall morning.
