From a shy, intelligent Sydney boy to the charismatic INXS frontman. How did Michael Hutchence become a superstar with one of the biggest bands in the world? And how did it all go so terribly wrong?Today, we’re talking about the life and death of Michael Hutchence. The middle son of Kel and Patricia, the older brother of Rhett, the younger brother of Tina, the father of Tiger Lily and one of the biggest rock stars the world has ever seen. At the peak of his fame with Australian band INXS, Michael, with his long locks and effortlessly cool rock star moves, was adored by fans. He had a string of high-profile relationships with famous women, including our own Kylie Minogue, who appeared naked in a home video Michael shot in Richard Lowenstein’s incredible documentary film, Mystify: Michael Hutchence. But then, just as INXS were trying to reignite their career, Michael’s body was found in a Sydney hotel room in 1997. So what happened? What went wrong? And why 20 years after his death are his family only just finding out about some debilitating medical conditions? Stephen is joined by Michael's big sister Tina Hutchence. If you or someone you know needs support, help is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.Your host is Stephen DownieThe Executive Producer is Elissa RatliffSubscribe to Investigates here: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/investigates/id1344649849 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we take a break from the Rock Hall and have a casual chat about recent music documentaries. Join us as we review Mystify: Michael Hutchence, Between Me and My Mind, The Two Killings of Sam Cooke and Echo in the Canyon.
We had the honor of talking to Richard Lowenstein, director of the new movie "Mystify: Michael Hutchence" about the INXS legend. But Richard was more than a director (of many, many INXS music videos, too), he was a close friend of Michael's and tells us a few very personal anecdotes about the always charming, always great, but also troubled musician - and Richard tries to "demystify" one burning question: why did Michael Hutchence kill himself, all alone in a hotel room in 1997?
My Summer Lair host Sammy Younan interviews director Richard Lowenstein whose documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence deftly explores the life and tragedy of the INXS front man we lost in 1997. Richard Lowenstein first met Michael Hutchence when he was 23 making music videos for the likes of Hunters & Collectors and Cold Chisel. Michael liked what Richard made and commissioned him to make some music videos for INXS. Little did Richard know almost 40 years later he’d be the man making a documentary about his best mates life. The good. The bad and all the mysteries that followed him until the very end. Richard’s documentary, Mystify: Michael Hutchence is a captivating movie filled with rarely-seen footage and intimate home videos of Michael’s life - at home, on holidays, backstage, on the road, even in bed. It also features stories from three of the four most important women in Michael's life - Michelle Bennet, Kylie Minogue and Helena Christensen. And it's truly fascinating. This week's Always Be Watching pod has Dan and Chris chatting about a wonderfully eclectic range of TV shows. There's the dark and arty Too Old To Die Young, which Dan insists is actually a "13 hour movie". Chris raves about the hipster kids cartoon Apple and Onion. Fans of Elmore Leonard might be really keen to see Carla Gugino starring in the gritty action adventure show Jett. And Chris did the thing he almost never does: he went to a cinema and saw the new Michael Hutchence documentary Mystify, which looks at the life of the INXS frontman. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/always-be-watching/message
Director Richard Lowenstein joins Matthew Pejkovic of Matt's Movie Reviews to talk about his new documentary 'Mystify: Michael Hutchence', rewriting the legacy of Michael Hutchence, his reaction to the numerous revelations about Michael's life, how Michael would react in a world of social media, and much, much more!
Sarah is back from Italy, and the trio is finally whole again. Sarah shares observations from her Italian holiday with Daniel and Geraldine. They follow up by having a really great talk with Richard Lowenstein about his new documentary “Mystify: Michael Hutchence”. Geraldine has attended the final training of footy prior to the game between the Megahertz and the Rockdogs, and shares some of her feelings about playing for the first time. Paola Bella is an Indigenous writer, artist and curator, and chats to Breakfasters about opening this year’s Emerging Writer’s Festival with her event, Speaking Truth to Power. Michael Harden joins the trio for this week’s Food Interlude, and talks about the ethical procurement of Indigenous game meat. Sarah, Daniel and Geraldine also shares some interesting tales about octopus, including fascination and fear. Tony Birch’s new novel, The White Girl, is set in south-eastern Australia and focuses on an extraordinary Indigenous woman. Tony stops by Breakfasters this week to talk about his own personal experience with the community that is the foundation of his book.
