Welcome to a special series of the Whistleblowing Now and Then podcast, called: The Public Interest and National Security Whistleblowing: Looking Back, Thinking Forward. This 3-part series is a collaboration between Whistleblowing International Network and Kaeten Mistry, Associate Professor of History at the University of East Anglia, and co-author of the book Whistleblowing Nation: The History of National Security Disclosures and Cult of State Secrecy. The podcasts will consider how secrecy and liberty, and security and openness became competing concepts within democratic societies. We'll examine these questions within and across national and regional boundaries, looking at Europe, North America, and South America. We'll delve into issues relating to the United States, UK, Spain, France, Argentina, and Chile, among others.Today's episode is entitled, “Secrets: A Very British Affair.” We speak to Martin Bright, Editor-at-Large at Index on Censorship, and Maurice Frankel, Director at Campaign for Freedom of Information, about public interest whistleblowing, government transparency, and state secrecy in the United Kingdom.Additional Reading:In addition to the podcast series, we share resources supporting those working on issues relating to whistleblowing, the public interest, and strengthening civil society organisations.Below are some resources related to Episode 1.Briefing on the National Security Bill - ProtectThis briefing (2022) outlines the concerns of Protect, the UK's whistleblowing organisation and legal advice centre, about new offences in the new National Security Bill that may criminalise whistleblowing where it involves disclosures to foreign regulators and journalists.Introducing a public interest disclosure defence - Matrix and Mishcon de Reya LLPThis briefing paper by lawyers from Matrix and Mishcon de Reya, sets out the basis for the introduction of a public interest disclosure defence for breaches of the Official Secrets Acts (“OSAs”) or any replacement Espionage Act.When We Speak (2022)'When We Speak', directed by Tas Brooker, follows 3 whistleblowers: Katherine Gunn, Rose McGowan, and Helen Evans. By cutting between these stories, Brooker highlights their common threads, abuses of power, and exploited vulnerabilities. Crises of conscience, painful examinations of where one's loyalties lie. We hear the motivation behind the decision to blow the whistle, and we see its dramatic fallout.  The film offers a human perspective, on what can often be quite an abstract discussion. You can listen back to the Whistleblowing Now and Then episode with Director Tas Brooker here.Official Secrets (2019)Official Secrets is a film based on the case of whistleblower Katharine Gun who worked as a linguist at the UK's government communication headquarters (GCHQ). In 2003, she intercepted an email from the US National Security Agency - an email asking GCHQ to assist the US in their efforts to legitimise a war on Iraq. She made a copy of the memo – given anonymously to a journalist at the Observer – as she believed revealing the proposed bugging and blackmail tacticSupport the Show.

Önkénteseket keresünk a műsor készítéséhez. M lanzó tres álbumes: New York • London • Paris • Munich en 1979, The Official Secrets Act en 1980 y Famous Last Words en 1981. Un cuarto álbum grabado por Robin Scott con Shikisha fue producido en 1984 pero no salió al mercado hasta 1998. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

After over a year since theatres shut down across the UK and around the world, the Royal Court Theatre has been leading a charge in the grand reopening of London theatres. One of it's most exciting productions is a new play by Obie and Olivier Award recipient Caryl Churchill. John Heffernan is one of the stars of her new play What If If Only'and very kindly sat down with us to discuss the eagerly anticipated new work by Churchill and what the rehearsal process has been like amidst ongoing restrictions after some time away from the stage. Heffernan most recently starred in acclaimed BBC drama The Pursuit of Love and has also played key roles in Brexit: The Uncivil War, The Crown and films: Official Secrets and Misbehaviour. A certainly increasingly familiar face for his work on screen and on stage, critics and audiences alike have praised John Heffernan's detailed acting and in this interview, we also see a hardworking and enthusiastically charming individual.John Heffernan previously starred in Caryl Churchill's Love and Information at the Royal Court Theatre alongside fellow co-star of What If If Only  actress Linda Bassett. It seems like a grand reunion with Caryl Churchill also present in the rehearsal room as they guided under the careful direction of Love and Information director James Macdonald. Heffernan reminisces about his early visits to the Royal Court as a keen-eyed student and how he first fell in love with Churchill's work in this candid interview. We get to find out what it's been like working with some of his heroes as well as his hopes for the theatre industry as we move out of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a truly fascinating interview and we wish the company well as they open on Friday 1st October.Tickets on sale NOW: https://royalcourttheatre.com/whats-on/whatififonly/

In light of some of our founding members moving on from Global Questions, we are bringing you their all-time favourite episodes! This week, we are re-sharing Gen's favourite episode - the In-Depth discussion with Bernard Collaery on Witness K during our season on security. Bernard Collaery is an Australian barrister, lawyer and former Attorney-General being prosecuted for conspiring against the government. Gen and Bernard discuss Australia's national security through the lens of the Witness K trial. Since this episode aired, Witness K and Bernard Collaery were charged over their alleged roles in exposing how Australia bugged Timor-Leste during negotiations surrounding oil and gas in the region in 2004. The trial was held in private through special powers meant for counter-terrorism. Out of almost 40 court appearances, little has been publicly reported. The Australian Government was accused of abusing its power for condemning an honest whistleblower and his lawyer to hide its own actions. This case has the potential to inflict negative relationships with Australia's international partners and affect Australia's global reputation. What was the government hiding from the public in Witness K's case? Why were Collaery and Witness K targeted? Does this represent a change in culture within the Australian government? And how can we make sure this doesn't happen again? Tech Tyrants Hide the Whistleblower. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter deleting the name of Eric Ciaramella. Alas, the formal arrival of George Orwell's 1984. The Purge only gonna get worse headed unto 2020. But why has Adam Schiff suddenly changed his mind on direct Whistleblower testimony? A resume too revealing of Coup Plotting Collusion? Yet another big mess for Schiff. We review the legal statutes that clearly DO NOT provide 'anonymity' for such a "complainant" whistleblower. Don Trump, Jr. discusses with the ladies of "The View." Mollie Hemingway courageously says the name Eric Ciaramella on Fox News. President Trump retweets Dan Bongino's censored "Charlie" podcast. Meanwhile, we lay out the facts about Ukraine. The new book "Downwind: A people's history of the nuclear west" recounts stories of lives devastated or terminated by our government's nuclear testing and uranium extraction. The book portrays communities that were dreadfully affected - sheep ranchers, uranium miners, native Americans, ordinary families - in the Four Corners region of Utah. Seattle-based author Sarah Alisabeth Fox documents, through extensive historical and scientific research, and through hundreds of interviews with affected individuals, the Cold War conspiracy of official silence and secrecy. The book reveals how agencies and mining companies attempted to hide the devastating impact on lives and livelihoods from nuclear testing and uranium mining in the decades following World War II. In this podcast interview, Sarah talks with BCB host Channie Peters about her upcoming book reading at Eagle Harbor Books on Sunday, July 19th at 3 pm. She describes her reasons for doing this research and writing this book, and what she hopes will come from shining a light on this part of American history. In the book, Sarah writes: "Long after the dust has settled and the politicians have claimed victory and the historians have penned their summaries, cancers and illnesses will continue to manifest in the bodies of ordinary people, erasing the supposed boundaries between soldier and civilian and making us all survivors and potential victims of a war we thought had ended.  It is time for a new accounting of the Cold War, one in which the so-called folktales of the ordinary people who witnessed it firsthand are accorded the credibility and attention they deserve." Sarah hopes that we will join her on July 19th for a stimulating discussion from your questions - about nuclear testing and energy, about our relationship with our government, what they tell us and what they want us to believe in the name of national security and patriotism.
