Today we are diving into an important Conversation - How Seeking and Speaking the Truth about Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations. In this episode we are afforded the incredible opportunity to have Dr. Robert Livingston (Social Psychologist, Author, Lecturer) join us to discuss the science underlying bias and racism. How can you become part of the solution? In the wake of the social unrest of 2020 and growing calls for racial justice, many business leaders and ordinary citizens are asking that very question. This book provides a compass for all those seeking to begin the work of anti-racism. In The Conversation, Robert Livingston addresses three simple but profound questions: What is racism? Why should everyone be more concerned about it? What can we do to eradicate it? For some, the existence of systemic racism against Black people is hard to accept because it violates the notion that the world is fair and just. But the rigid racial hierarchy created by slavery did not collapse after it was abolished, nor did it end with the civil rights era. Whether it's the composition of a company's leadership team or the composition of one's neighborhood, these racial divides and disparities continue to show up in every facet of society. For Livingston, the difference between a solvable problem and a solved problem is knowledge, investment, and determination. And the goal of making organizations more diverse, equitable, and inclusive is within our capability. Livingston's lifework is showing people how to turn difficult conversations about race into productive instances of real change! Dr. Livingston joins NEXT Academy Co-Creators Chad Jones & Cody Phillips as they discuss “The Conversation” and pull out leadership lessons that they feel can help contractors create a competitive advantage by utilizing Livingston's framework. In today's episode we are afforded the incredible opportunity to have Mike join us to help weave some of these concepts into the fabric of the Construction Industry. To the listeners out there…this will be a heavy note taking episode. Mike has lived a lifetime of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. He has been held at gunpoint and threatened with execution. He's jumped out of a building rigged to explode, helped amputate a teammate's leg, and made countless split-second life-and-death decisions. He's written countless emails to his family, telling them how much he loves them, just in case those were the last words of his they'd ever read. Outside of the SEALs, he's run meetings in the White House Situation Room, negotiated international arms treaties, and developed high-impact corporate strategies. Over his many years of leadership, he has always strived to be better, to contribute more, and to put others first. That's what makes him an effective leader, and it's the quality that he's identified in all of the great leaders he's encountered. That continual striving to lift those around him has filled Mike's life with meaning and purpose, has made him secure in the knowledge that he brings his best to everything he does, and has made him someone others can rely on. In Never Enough, Mike recounts dramatic stories and offers battle- and boardroom-tested advice that will motivate readers to do work of value, live lives of purpose, and stretch themselves to reach their highest potential. Today Mike is the chief digital transformation officer at VMware. Rich Diviney has more than 20 years of experience as a Navy SEAL Officer. He completed more than 13 overseas deployments, achieved multiple leadership positions (including the Commanding Officer of a Navy SEAL Command), and since retirement in early 2017, has worked as a speaker, facilitator, and consultant with the Chapman & Co. Leadership Institute and Simon Sinek Inc. During Rich's time as the officer in charge of training for a specialized command, he reworked the selection and assessment program to identify key attributes rather than just skills. This allowed him and his cadre to more effectively, and more constructively, explain the success and failure of candidates. Most importantly, it allowed them to put together the highest performing team possible. Additionally, he spearheaded the creation of a directorate that fused physical, mental, and emotional disciplines. He led his small team to create the first-ever “Mind Gym” that helped special operators train their brains to perform faster, longer, and better in all environments — especially high-stress ones. Using the principles of this program, Rich has been able to work with more than five thousand business, athletic, and military leaders to teach leadership and optimal performance. And now, he's put all that information into his new book, The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance. By reading this book, you'll discover how you fit inside a team, show up for others, handle stress, challenge, and uncertainty, and how you can master your attributes for success. Today, Rich joins NEXT Academy Co-Creators Chad Jones and Cody Phillips as they discuss “The Attributes” and pull out leadership lessons that they feel can help contractors create a competitive advantage by utilizing and understanding these attributes! Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We think too much like preachers defending our sacred beliefs, prosecutors proving the other side wrong, and politicians campaigning for approval--and too little like scientists searching for truth. Intelligence is no cure, and it can even be a curse: being good at thinking can make us worse at rethinking. The brighter we are, the blinder to our own limitations we can become. Today, Josh Bone (Electri International Executive Director) joins NEXT Academy Co-Creators Chad Jones and Cody Phillips as they discuss “Think Again” by Adam Grant and pull out leadership lessons that they feel can help contractors create a competitive advantage by utilizing the ability to RETHINK! This book is #AWESOME

Is your company in the midst of the Predictable Crises of Growth...Of Overload? Of Stall-Out? Of Free Fall? Why is profitable growth so hard to achieve and sustain? Most executives manage their companies as if the solution to that problem lies in the external environment—find an attractive market, formulate the right strategy, win new customers. But when Bain & Company's Chris Zook and James Allen, researched this question, they found that 85% of the challenges to growth are internal—proliferating processes and bureaucracy, loss of accountability, and increasing distance from the front lines, to name a few. More crucial is their finding that companies experience a set of predictable internal crises, at predictable stages, as they grow. If not managed properly, these crises can stifle even the healthiest company's ability to grow further—and actively lead it into decline. Today, NEXT Academy Co-Creators Chad Jones and Cody Phillips attempt to pull out leadership lessons that they feel can help contractors create a competitive advantage through rediscovering their Founder's Mentality and give actionable steps to re-establish it within your organization. They're hurting. They're scared. Just like many of you. They're struggling trying to process all of the noise while still trying to be a leader within their household. Their company. Hi everyone... Welcome to Monday Morning Mastery powered by The NEXT Academy - Building Construction Leaders for What Comes NEXT. As always I hope this finds you ready to attack the week ahead. My five year old likes to go to the "Tool Store." He and I were on the way there, listening to some tunes and out of nowhere, he asked me, “Dad are you scared of heights?” Now he's heard me over the years explain my dislike for them so he has a pretty good idea how I'm going to answer. I said, “I'm not scared of all of them but as you know, I don't love them either.” His reply was fantastic. It made me consider how often I view situations in a less than optimal manner. A 5 year old point of view was just what I needed to hear. You can tell yourself any story you want about your future. Why not tell one that creates positive anticipation and confident action? Why not look out from the mountain top and see the beauty? I hope you find great value in today's episode. Don't ever stop chasing to #BeBETTER. Hi everyone... Welcome to Monday Morning Mastery powered by The NEXT Academy - Building Construction Leaders for What Comes NEXT. As always I hope this finds you ready to attack the week ahead. Today's episode is about the importance of diversity. It's so easy for us to stay in our comfort zone, but ultimately I've found that that line of thinking will never allow me to grow as an individual. It's no secret that as a society we are becoming more and more tribal in our friendships, in our relationships. We stick to a circle that reinforces our beliefs and makes us feel good. We all do this. Ultimately though…is that a good thing? I'm reminded of the great Oscar Wilde quote “Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” Bringing together different types of thinkers creates better results. I hope you find great value in today's episode. Don't ever stop chasing to BE BETTER. Hi everyone... Welcome to Monday Morning Mastery powered by The NEXT Academy - Building Construction Leaders for What Comes NEXT. As always I hope this finds you ready to attack the week ahead. Two Ears, One Mouth - many of us have heard this message. Whether that came from a parent. A teacher. Or from your own mouth, many of you out there today have heard this message. WE HAVE TWO EARS AND ONE MOUTH SO THAT WE CAN LISTEN TWICE AS MUCH AS WE SPEAK. Now more than maybe ever in our society it's important to listen. Stephen Covey once said Most People do not listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply. Poor communication comes with a high price tag. It accounts for businesses losing millions of dollars each year. It accounts for you losing friends each day. It accounts for a completely tone-deaf response to the myriad of tensions we face in today's world. Now more than ever, leaders will need to master the skill of listening. As you move into this week, I challenge you to listen more and talk less. Both with your mouth and with your keyboard. I hope you find great value in today's episode. Don't ever stop chasing to BE BETTER. Registration is now open for the 2021 NEXT Academy class. If you're interested check out our website at nextleadershipacademy.org or give me a shout. Hi everyone... Welcome to Monday Morning Mastery powered by The NEXT Academy - Building Construction Leaders for What Comes NEXT.  As always I hope this finds you ready to attack the week ahead. Often when I drop my kids off at school over the last year I've said to them “Make today better than yesterday and tomorrow better than today.” The message behind this quote is simple…always be striving to be better. To grow. As you know It's much easier said than done. But the importance of each and every day cannot be overstated. What you do today matters. “People create success in their lives by focusing on today. It may sound trite, but today is the only time you have. It's too late for yesterday. And you can't depend on tomorrow. That's why today matters.”  "Just for Today" is a simple method taught by the great John Maxwell that helps add some clarity to this daily discipline.
