When I learned about Nicolas C. Day's middle-grade book, Into the Great Marinara, I had no idea what to expect.  However, there's absolutely no way I could have imagined a story about a boy with control issues falling face-first into a plate of spaghetti and landing in a world where he had to confront his own erroneous ideas about God!  In this episode, we chat about the book, Nicolas' writing process, and more. When I showed the cover and synopsis of Into the Great Marinara to a couple of friends, they both had the same reaction.  "So, it's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs but Christian?" Okay, so that's not really the story, but there's something to it.  Nicolas C. Day says it's more like, "Lord of the Rings meets The Phantom Tollbooth in an Italian restaurant." But seriously, how hilarious is that? He got the idea for the book because of some atheistic comment about some Spaghetti god (or was it dragon?)  I can't remember. But apparently, this is a thing. So, we have a story about a kid who ends up in this "spaghetti world" where pasta fight for the "Chef" against a spaghetti dragon.  Now, I know... this sounds ridiculous.  I won't pretend it doesn't. But what I read of it didn't feel as crazy as this comes off.  I'm probably making it sound much more bizarre than it really is. But then again... maybe not.  After all, isn't that what is so delightful about middle-grade?  It can tell a brilliant story with a deep message without ever taking itself too seriously.   But Nicolas C. Day hasn't just written "this spaghetti book."  No, there are plans to make it a series and he has plans for more!  How about YA fairies?  Yeah.  He's talking about making those a thing!  EEEP! Oh, and the book I recommended to him from Episode 6?  W. A. Fulkerson--not Fulkner.  Oy! Into the Great Marinara by Nicolas C. Day Tanner loves baseball, but he's not a big fan of being bossed around by those in charge: his parents, his baseball coach, God—who, if he exists, surely doesn't have time to spend on a small-town middle-schooler. But Tanner finds his world rocked when he is sucked into a bowl of leftover spaghetti and shot into a land of talking pasta who carry swords and spears—all of whom believe in a mysterious higher power they call “Chef.” Their world is under attack by a giant spaghetti dragon, and they seem to think Tanner is the one sent to save them. Tanner is faced with hard decisions. Is this “Chef” actually God, and does He really exist? If so, is Tanner going to act according to his own devices to find a way home, or put his faith in the master recipe-maker and follow his cooked-up plan. El Instituto Provincial de Alcoholismo y Drogadicción (IPAD) funciona en barrio Juniors, dentro de la ciudad de Córdoba. Allí se realizan tareas abocadas al tratamiento y acompañamiento de personas con consumo problemáticos de sustancias. Reciben a hombres y mujeres mayores de 21 años. En el IPAD trabaja Nicolás, enfermero, quien actualmente está coordinando el dispositivo de vacunación para la salud mental y las adicciones. Él nos habla de la alegría que le provoca como profesional de la salud, acompañar a las personas que asisten al IPAD en el derecho al acceso a la salud. "El que todo el mundo pueda acceder a estos simples actos, me parece que entrega una gran satisfacción".

Nicolas C. Pégard, Ph.D., a University of California, Berkeley neuroscientist will provide an illuminating overview of his work to develop optical systems that are designed to help neuroscientists solve problems. Of particular interest to Berkley, neuroscientist is a method known as optogenetics. Optogenetics is a process that uses light to modify molecular events in a specific manner, in living cells and organisms, which enables researchers to connect computers to the brain and focus on specific neurons. Essentially, the cell's genetic toolbox is used to create proteins that are not naturally present within the brain, a true combination process combining optics and genetics. The Berkeley researcher will detail how his team uses holograms to create artificial patterns of neural activity that can mimic what the brain is doing when it is experiencing a thought or engaging in an action. This allows researchers to put the brain into a state that replicates what would happen if the brain had actually experienced a sensory stimulus. Pégard gives us a glimpse into the future of these techniques of neuroscience, some of which sound like they could be pulled straight from a big budget science fiction Hollywood movie plot. Case in point, this neural activity method could actually trick the brain into believing something has occurred that did not, or even place new ideas into the brain. The discussion will detail how observation of the brain in a diseased state could lead to monumental advances in drug therapy for brain diseases, which may enable the development of higher efficacy drugs with minimal or no side effects. Further research could facilitate groundbreaking achievements in prosthetics, for if there can be communication with the brain that involves multiple thousands of neurons, prostheses could become higher functioning. Nicolas C. Pégard and neuroscience researchers foresee changes that could literally alter the course for human health and brain function, but for now, his team is taking it to step by step.

Rick is out of town for the weekend so last night I decided to revisit this set only to realize I made a glaring omission; I left out "Make You Feel My Love." The song was originally written by Bob Dylan but never released until much later. When the original surfaced, Billy Joel, Trisha Yearwoood and Garth Brooks all did remakes of the song. To this day, I hold the Garth Brooks version very close to my heart. Listening to the version by Adele, brought back all those old feelings of betrayal, resentment and revenge; feelings that I have managed to suppress in sour relationships since then because it makes me appear petty, if not foolish. It came out in 1998, a time when my relationship with Pete was on the rocks as I talked about in the DIVA Tribute to Erasure. I would go to this dive billiard hall and have a couple of Bohemia's (Mexican beer) and play that song on the jukebox over and over while drowning in my own tears before heading to the gay bar for the rest of the evening. Knowing that Pete would be there, it aloud me to clear my head in advance, lest I do something stupid. I've included two versions of the song; one a dance version and the other a more chilled version that keeps up with the tempo of the original. The dance version is really good but I just wish they had slowed it down some. If you don't like the additions, I suggest you keep the original set as the newer version is replacing the older one which will no longer be available.  English singer Adele (Adele Laurie Blue Adkins) won two Grammy's for her debut album 19 in 2009 and it's been nothing but uphill since then. After the success of that album, if you still didn't know who she was, you couldn't avoid her after her sophomore album release 21. Her amazing performance of "Rolling In the Deep" on the Letterman Show further solidified her name and went on to win an additional six Grammy's including Album of the Year. By the time 25 landed, all bets were off when she won a contentious battle of the Grammy for Album of the Year beating out another one of our favorite divas Beyoncé. While heartfelt, her acceptance speech may have been slightly over the top but all is forgiven because she was (as in past interviews) genuinely sincere if not surprised by her win. While lacking the vocal gymnastics of her predecessors, Adele has put herself in a position to wrangle the mantle away from Celine Dion who stole it from Barbra Streisand. She has the qualities of Celine's overly genuine and heartfelt gratitude and sincerity with Barbra's street smarts, honesty, and use of frosty language to express her views. Combined with her outstanding beauty and talent, she IS the ultimate DIVA.
