On March first, the president issued two executive orders designed to dramatically increase commercial logging on our public lands.  These executive orders are bad news on their own, but the situation is actually even more dire. These orders are part of a decades-long effort by industry, the ultra wealthy, and radical right wing anti-government legislators to privatize our public lands and extract maximum profit for the wealthy few. And look, I know that there are a million attacks and assaults that are demanding your attention.  I'm not here to tell you that forest policy is more or less important than anything else. But we in the Pacific Northwest have way more agency and influence over our public lands than most of the other battles being waged.  And in the age of spiraling climate chaos, any intact or recovering forest that is logged is a forest that may never come back.Last week, Oregon Wild put on a fantastic webinar where they went into detail on the executive orders, federal legislation, agency sabotage, and other ways that this Republican government is working to destroy our public lands. But they didn't stop at the doom and gloom.  They talked extensively about a wide variety of actions that we can take to fight back. They were kind enough to let me air clips of that webinar for today's show.  It was too long to play in its entirety for our format, so unfortunately I wasn't able to include the sections where they talked about strategies for contacting legislators, using social media, and other tactics.  But you can watch the entire webinar here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO35KTq3CK8You can also find a really useful activism toolkit they put together at oregonwild.org/activist-toolkit/What you're going to hear today is a breakdown of what is happening at the federal level, including with these recent executive orders, and I hope you'll feel angry and inspired to take action.Show Notes:Webinar on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO35KTq3CK8Oregon Wild Activist Toolkit: https://oregonwild.org/activist-toolkit/The public lands privatization game plan: https://www.andykerr.net/kerr-public-lands-blog/2025/2/28/the-monetization-of-public-landsTrump Timber EOs:https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/immediate-expansion-of-american-timber-production/https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/addressing-the-threat-to-national-security-from-imports-of-timber-lumber/Support the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

On a misty morning in the fall of 1985, a small group of Haida people blockaded a muddy dirt road on Lyell Island, demanding that the government work with Indigenous people to find a way to protect the land and the future. The Stand is a riveting feature documentary drawn from more than a hundred hours of archival footage from that first blockade and the months that followed. Christopher Auchter, director of the award-winning documentary Now Is The Time, recreates the critical moment when the Haida Nation took a stand to protect their land. The Stand is showing this month in Vancouver and at other locations around BC. We spoke with Christopher Auchter in September last year.

This is a critical moment for forests in British Columbia. Three years have passed since the B.C. government promised to work with First Nations to implement a paradigm-shift in forest stewardship, as laid out in the Old Growth Strategic Review. Yet the B.C. government has made little progress on their promises. On September 28, communities across the province are coming together in a day of action to protect the last remaining old growth in BC. I talk with Jens Wieting, Senior Forest and Climate Campaigner with Sierra Club BC.

Local advocacy group Citizens Against Clearcutting has been fighting to stop the province's clearcutting plans near Port Blandford for years now. The plan is to clearcut a 15-square-kilometre area in the Southwest River Valley. The group says the area is inside the town's boundaries and encompasses part of its watershed area. Their latest move? Pairing up with an environmental law charity, Eco-Justice, to seek a judicial review of the government's plans. Carol Warren is a spokesperson for Citizens Against Clearcutting.

It's time for what is basically a return home for us. Witchcraft, religious cults, indigenous spirits, a cornfield deity. Pretty sure that your hosts probably had run-ins with all of those at some point in our youth, growing up in rural areas. We may as well start in New England, where a woman inherits some property, after the original heir dies in a fiery explosion. This area may have a little problem with witchcraft, but is that any reason to give up Crowhaven Farm (1970)? New England is a hotbed, let me tell you. Be careful when you buy that house, well below market value, in that quaint little village. The more secrets you unravel, the more intertwined your family may become, in The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Some families take marrying outside of their religion, or even thinking about it, very seriously. It might be a good idea to consider these things, or you could be tormented with spiders, snakes, and chickens! Don't fall victim to a Deadly Blessing (1981)! A goddess of the forest versus the devil witch of the valley? Mind-altering chemicals may be beneficial when you sit down, relax, and stare into the Eyes of Fire (1983)! Look, I know that kids can be somewhat impressionable, at times. But when some creepy new kid comes to town, telling all of the other kids that they have to slaughter the adults to appease a god in the cornfield, you may want to seek a second opinion. That's just life in Nebraska. At least it is in Children of the Corn (1984). Aggressive activist or mischievous spirit? Regardless, Graham Greene seems to have a great time taking things to the extreme, in Clearcut (1991).

We're back FINALLY with a much keener setup thanks to you generous listeners! On this episode, we're celebrating our First Nations relatives in Canada, by discussing the INTENSE, groundbreaking, and rarely seen Canadian folk horror production, Clearcut (1991) staring the always reliable Graham Greene and Floyd Red Crow Westerman. If you haven't seen it, it is available on YouTube. This was Greene's first role coming off the ENORMOUS success of his Oscar nominated performance of Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves. You can definitely tell he was on a mission to kick the typecast he was inevitably pidgeonhole'd in. He turns in an incredible, groundbreaking performance that will forever change how you view him as an actor. We also discuss a little bit about the making of the film, the UNBELIEVABLE true story of the film's director, Rhyzard Bugajski, the book A Dream Like Mine by author MT Kelly, which the screenplay is based, and it should be taught in University film courses. What if, instead of competing with each other, trees work together? What if they even communicate? Renowned forest ecologist Suzanne Simard has spent her life digging into the "wood wide web"—the mycorrhizal network of fungi and roots through which trees share resources and information. Her work has transformed the way we understand forests and inspired everything from the Tree of Souls in "Avatar" to the scientist character in "The Overstory." We talked with Simard about her new book, "Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest," for her book launch at Powell's Books. Temporary fix: open Rep pane, toggle one of the reps “show as experience bar” on/off. Problem seems unrelated to mods, as it does it even when all mods are off Mike Burning the horde in the Clearcut was fun :D Dinged 120 on Sunday - it was faster than expected. Marie Davenport is the best grandma in WoW WITCHES! Drustvar is amazing Trying to get geared up for heroics - currently 301 Have not finished all zones. Still four whole zones to complete New trick - group members kicking themselves to beat the timer. Got into a dungeon where three people left, no tank Next dungeon got me three pieces. Tailoring has slowed. Still have to deal with enchanting. Haven’t taken a good look at it. WQs open after two Zandalar zones are quick-finished, then one solo island expedition, THEN the third, THEN friendly rep. This Week in WoW PvP Brawl: Gravity Lapse event Seemingly not going for weekly stuff for another few weeks into the expansion at least News and BfA Do the city quests first - leads to other benefits Example: Pests in northern area of Horde city called the Zocalo - be sure to pick up “Pests” - gives you access to Jani, the Loa of Scavengers. As you’re out and about, you will sometimes get a whisper from her that you’ve found a “shiny trinket” - find her trash pile to get a treasure chest Horde - starts in the Zocalo, the northern part of the city, so do this right away. Alliance: starts in Shatterstone Harbor in Vol’dun, so you don’t get this one til later Changing and advancing professions in BfA Advantage to changing: you can start along with everyone else When you change the profession, you have to click TWICE - once to get the initial Vanilla levels, and then a second time to learn the Zandalari profession Check to make sure you pick up all your level 1 abilities and recipes - you get them automatically sometimes (cooking) and not other times (gathering professions) Worth getting your other profession alts at least started in the city - early level stuff can be useful, such as the level 1 Rubellite recipe in JC (Insightful Rubellite - +5% xp) and the Zandalari tradeskill glove enchants. Rubelite currently selling for around 70g on Whisperwind AH; Zandalari tradeskill enchants are pretty cheap also if you don’t want to DIY Developer Q&A with Ian Hazzikostas: some highlights Feral druid AOE tuning has been improved but isn’t finished yet. 120 power setback is noticeable - looking in future expansions to smooth it out so you don’t feel like hitting max level is a huge backward jump Autoaccept removed from groups: development believed autoaccept for groups and using addons for searching for groups created an imbalance between those who used addons and those who didn’t. (Ren does not approve) AH is showing its age, particularly on high pop servers. Search options too limited May introduce deposits that would reward people with bulk pricing -- higher deposits for people who post a single stack of a stackable trade good (what could go wrong?) Community moderation coming in the next patch Azerite armor will be tradeable starting after next week’s patch (“they don’t want players to abuse the system to look for the best possible class/trait combination to loot a certain piece of azerite armor”) AP needed to advance your Heart of Azeroth will be reduced New models incoming for goblins and worgen (please fix hats!) Is this expansion “alt friendly”? Takes me about 20 minutes to get from beginning of entry quests to in the first inn, bound, and basic professions upgraded. Multiply that by 13 level 110s and that’s over 4 hours just to get everyone in the game. Not even counting the 1 Horde and 1 Alliance character I needed to take through the whole thing. Are side quests a problem?

May edition has a bit of euphoric summery vibe about it. Current songs from TV Rock and Kelis, as well as some trancey numbers from Pryda, Deadmau5 and Clearcut, with a bit of a song-a-long to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Editors. Enjoy!
