For over 20 years, Erik Childress joined Nick Digilio on WGN Radio to talk and review movies. After his show was unceremoniously canceled this September, the movie review segment that was a staple on Chicago radio went as well. But now, following up on requests from fans, Erik and Steve Prokopy return to keep its memory alive; a segment once populated with the likes of Christmas Movies Actually host, Collin Souter, for nearly two decades and even the Now Playing Network founder, Jim Laczkowski. It’s a longstanding tradition that the Movie Madness Podcast now hopes to resurrect and they have picked a week that includes the latest from Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Robert Zemeckis, Sofia Coppola and, of course, they talk the return of Borat and get into Rudy Giuliani’s pants. Some great recommendations on this show and we hope to continue to bring you more.
Every October, we try to go above and beyond the call of duty. For one of the most insane years in recent history, it only made sense to finally tackle another Italian horror master by the name of Lucio Fulci. I needed help with some very special returning guests by the names of Patrick Ripoll and Gabe Powers, both host their own shows on the Now Playing Network as well. It was difficult to narrow down our discussion to the main essentials but we do start out talking about his Giallo work with A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN followed by what most consider to be his masterwork, THE BEYOND. Lots of other titles are of course mentioned along the way due to his extensive filmography. We also cover a few titles during the what we watched segment including THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW, DR. JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE, and WITCHTRAP. 00:00 - 06:19 - Introduction06:20 - 07:02 - What We Watched Song07:03 - 01:02:45 - What We Watched This Week01:02:46 - 01:04:01 - Director Song01:04:02 - 02:02:51 - A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin02:02:52 - 02:43:46 - The Beyond02:43:47 - 03:09:09 - Other Titles03:09:10 - 03:18:41 - Top 3 Fulci / Outro Patrick Bromley Ranks 21 Fulci Horror Films: https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3550177/zombies-slashers-ghosts-extreme-gore-ranking-21-lucio-fulcis-horror-films/ Screen Drafts Picks The Top 7 Fulci Films:https://screendrafts.libsyn.com/lucio-fulci-with-elric-kane-rebekah-mckendry Supporting Characters Interviews Stephen Thrower:http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/supportingcharacters/episode44 Genre Grinder Hosted By Gabe:https://www.genregrinder.com/ Tracks Of The Damned Hosted By Patrick:https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamned/s1e12

WELCOME! YOU’VE GOT MAIL! AND A SPECIAL DELIVERY OF E-FEAR! Enter the Matrix! Or, rather, what early ‘90s Hollywood thought virtual reality would look like, before movies like The Matrix offered a more nuanced alternative. Gabe and special guest, Now Playing Network head honcho Jim Laczkowski, take a look at Techno Horror. More specifically, Techno Horror movies about haunted and evil computers, video games, and internets. They begin with Michael Fischa’s filmed in the early ‘80s, released in the late ‘80s possessed electronic gym classic, Death Spa. Then, the discussion moves on to a, um, unique 1993 double-feature in Albert Pyun’s Arcade and Rachel Talalay’s Ghost in the Machine. Things end on a more somber and serious note with Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s fantastically melancholic Pulse (Japanese: Kairo, 2001) and a quick wrap-up of some other Techno Horror titles. 00:00 – Intro 05:01 – Death Spa 24:25 – Arcade 42:00 – Ghost in the Machine 1:08:23 – Pulse 1:36:10 – Outros

Gabe and Now Playing Network head honcho Jim Laczkowski – who you may remember from Director’s Club Podcast and Voices & Visions, among others – take a deep dive into the soul-crushing world of Nuclear Panic Movies. Again, this subject is too broad for a single podcast, so we’ve broken the discussion down to a series of movies released at the height of ‘80s Cold War paranoia between 1983 and 1988. Jim sets the stage by filling Gabe in on a couple ‘60s entries – Fredric Gadette’s This is Not a Test (1962) and Ray Milland Panic in Year Zero! (1962) – then they dig in, like atomic radiation tearing its way through flesh, bone, and marrow. Subject matter includes Nicholas Meyer’s The Day After (1983), Mick Jackson’s Threads (1984), Lynne Littman’s Testament (1983, #52FilmsByWomen), Edward Zwick’s Special Bulletin(1983), Fred Barzyk’s Countdown to Looking Glass (1984), Mori Masaki’s Barefoot Gen (1983; Gabe also quickly discusses the legacy of Hiroshima/Nagasaki-themed movies), Jimmy T. Murakami’s When the Wind Blows (1986), Steve De Jarnatt’s Miracle Mile (1988), and John Duigan’s One Night Stand (1984). Gabe closes things out with a quick mention of Konstantin Lopushansky’s Dead Man’s Letters (1986), which is otherwise dense enough to fill an entire podcast on its own. Follow along with this handy Letterboxd list (ranked by release date): https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/nuclear-panic-movies-of-the-80s/ Tune in next month when Gabe and Tracks of the Damned’s Patrick Ripoll cram every single slasher movie released in the year 1981. Do our homework along with us by watching all of the films on this Letterboxd list: https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/1981-slasher-movies/
Gabe describes the European phenomenon of comic and pulp-based super criminals/villains to his most special guest, Kristine Fisher, who happens to be his significant other (she also knows a lot about silent comedies, but that’s not particularly helpful for her here). The planned guest didn’t plan out, so she’s doing her best to keep him on topic and help him pronounce all the scary foreign names. Hopefully she (and you) learn a little something along the way. Super criminals and villains are a surprisingly broad subject, even when we stick to European iterations, so this podcast is mostly limited to serials from the silent era and mid-1960s. Specifically, we cover Louis Feuillade’s Fantômas (1913) and Les Vampires (1915), Fritz Lang’s Dr. Mabuse the Gambler (1922), André Hunebelle’s Fantômas (1964), and Italian fumetti neri adaptations, including Mario Bava’s Danger: Diabolik (1968), Umberto Lenzi’s Kriminal (1966), and Piero Vivarelli’s Mister X (aka: Avenger X, 1967) and Satanik (1968). For a more complete list of Euro-villain movies, see this letterboxd.com compilation list: https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/european-comic-book-pulp-villains-live-action/ For a preview of next month’s podcast with Now Playing Network mastermind Jim Laczkowski, check out this list: https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/nuclear-scare-fiction/ Musical clips this episode include: “Dr. Mabuse” by Propaganda “Dr. Mabuse” by Blue Systems/Systems in Blue“Deep Deep Down” by Ennio Morricone & Christy “Dr. Mabuse” remix by Blue Talking Please let me know if any of the clips are too loud – I’ve been trying to make sure volume levels are consistent across various listening devices, despite the compression inherent in the MP3 format – and visit us at genregrinder.com.

This month, instead of two separate podcasts, we're exploring our theme through one episode that explores 4 films. Episode 47 tackles the resilient story of A Star is Born, comparing & contrasting the aspects of the story that makes it so resonant that it speaks to the culture 80 years on from its first version. The discussion touches on the four versions; the original, from 1937, directed by William Wellman and starring Janet Gaynor & Frederic March; the 1954 remake, directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Garland & James Mason; the 1976 reboot, which switched the story from Hollywood to the music industry, directed by Frank Pierson and starring Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson. We explore how these three versions fed into the newest version, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga & Cooper. We are joined by special guests Collin Souter (film critic featured on RogerEbert.com, and WGN radio co-host, "Monday Morning Movie Reviews". Episode 46 of Fresh Perspective explores "I Am Not A Witch" (2018), directed by Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni and starring Maggie Mulubwa. This is part two of our two-part “Girl Power”-themed discussion, in celebration of strong performances by young African American actresses and magic realism in film. This fairytale-like portrayal of a young girl’s struggle to escape the corruption of the Zambian community who wrongly accuse her of witchcraft silently defies scapegoating those who challenge the status quo. Through the mesmerizing performance of Mulubwa, the absurdity of modern-day patriarchal and governmental “witch criers” is revealed and the strength and wisdom of young women to overcome them is never underestimated. Reel Reflections: What are you tethered to? How do you define freedom? How far would you go to be free from corruption, greed and hatred? Danielle Echols guests, she has a passion for storytelling, film, and writing. In college she studied documentary filmmaking and minority images in media. Episode 45 Fresh Perspective explores "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (2012), directed by Benh Zeitlin and starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry. This is part one of our two-part “Girl Power”-themed discussion, in celebration of strong performances by young African American actresses and magic realism in film. Presented in the shaky but imaginative perspective of a child, this film pulses with the life blood of an impoverished and hurricane-torn but content Delta community free of the barriers of civilized society. The heart of the film beats with the will power of a young girl mature beyond her years as she tries to piece together a dysfunctional domestic life with fragmented memories and comes to profoundly understand the nature of life and death. Reel Reflection: If you lost everything and came face-to-face with your primal will to survive, would you befriend or fear it? Fabiola Auxila (https://instagram.com/just_fabi) guests, film lover, and aspiring script writer and producer, studying at the Second City for Writing and Film. This is the end! (Don't worry, I didn't play The Doors in this episode). Well, no of course it isn't actually the end. But this is the last episode where I officially host. Fear not, there will be bonus episodes and I’ll be guesting from time to time throughout the year. Give all your support to Al & Brad when they begin in three weeks on the Danny Boyle episode. Of course, this is the year-end spectacular for 2016 and it should come as no surprise that it’s 4 hours long. I enlisted the help of two great friends of mine to contribute their thoughts on the year that was, as well as sharing their favorite films of 2016. Supporting Characters’ very own Bill Ackerman as well as Film Jive co-host Zach Betonte expand with me in great detail about memorable moments in film from the year that was! We also continue the tradition of sub-categories, listener & past guest contributions, 2016 favorites from the fans, and so much more! Obviously, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t begin with an introduction and a farewell. I’ll miss hosting, but I will continue to be behind-the-scenes every step of the way. It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege hosting this show, and you can always find me on either the Now Playing Network or at Voices & Visions - Jim 00:00 - 09:18 - Introduction / Farewell 09:19 - 36:42 - Overall Thoughts On 2016 36:43 - 01:45:50 - Sub-Categories (Best Actress, etc.) 01:45:51 - 01:52:10 - Regina & Andrew’s Lists! 01:52:11 - 02:26:16 - Numbers #25 - #11 02:26:17 - 02:29:14 - More Listener Lists! 02:29:15 - 03:57:37 - Our Top Ten Favorite Films Of 2016 03:57:38 - 04:03:45 - Final Round Of Listener Lists 04:03:46 - 04:09:30 - Outro / Final Parody Song For our complete lists, photos and show notes go to: http://www.directorsclubpodcast.com/blog/favorites2016
Merry New Year and Happy Christmas to all. What I have prepared for you is a gift that I will call the "Royal Sampler Volume One." It contains short clips from all the podcasts featured at The Now Playing Network, as well as extended highlights from Supporting Characters & Director's Club from over the years. You also get a brief glimpse into some of my interviewing skills with various guests over the years. There's also some kind of unusual collage towards the end. This is a special episode, highlighting the talented folks of NPN for the first half, and then highlighting some of the better moments from the recent wave of Director's Club episodes. The next episode will likely be released on January 9th, which will be The Best of 2016 featuring Bill Ackerman and Zach Betonte. This means you have until January 7th to get your top ten lists in so I can read some during our recording! directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com Thank you again for listening to this pinata of audio treats that will hopefully get you through your commute home for Christmas. Welcome to Voices and Visions, formerly Pop Culture Club. Confused? Well, there’s an introduction to help assist you. As you may or may not know, PCC is now V&V, and this is the first official episode under the new name. After my 8-minute monologue at the top, I am pleased to present another wonderful singer/songwriter by the name of Kay Hanley. If you’ve heard of the band Letters to Cleo, she is the incredibly energetic frontwoman and has always been a true blue rock star in my eyes. For movie fans, you’ll also know her as the singing voice of Josie in the hysterical satire JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS with Rachael Lee Cook, Parker Posey, and Alan Cumming. In addition, Kay is a songwriter for hire and has recently released a new EP with Letters to Cleo. I had the pleasure of meeting with her at the VIP show in Chicago and a couple months later, we reconnected over the phone to have a delightful conversation about her career, loss, inspiration, working in film, and what we can potentially expect from Letters to Cleo in the future. I truly hope you enjoy this episode since this is precisely the kind of show I will be offering as of 2017 on what I hope to be a weekly basis. Thank you so much to Nicole Poulos, Michael Creamer, and of course, my great guest Kay Hanley! My conversation with her begins right around the 8 minute mark. Hey folks, I'm Jim, the owner of the Now Playing Network. Patrick is on vacation in Mexico, looking for a nice seaside town to flee to if Trump becomes president, but that's no reason for the show not to go on! So instead of a proper episode of Tracks of the Damned this week, he's sent us this #ThrowbackThursday blast from the past. A white back Patrick was my co-host on our film podcast called Director's Club, where he did all kinds of wacky bonus episodes. One such episode back in 2013 was, in fact, the first audio commentary he ever did: Friday the 13th (1980) with a special guest, his mother. A 50-something year old Catholic woman with no concept of horror films, she was nonetheless an eager student as Patrick used the seminal 80's horror film as a lesson in the techniques and history of the slasher genre. He also decided to see how long it would take her to recognize Kevin Bacon, and the answer was: quite a while. It proved to be one of our most popular bonus episodes, so I'm happy to present it again to you here! Patrick will be back next Friday, tanned and recovering from Montezuma's revenge, with a proper episode on Messiah of Evil (1973) featuring guest Bill Ackerman! 0:00 - 4:15 - Intro 4:15 - 9:14 - Intro #2 9:15 - 1:52:36 - Commentary
Bill and Brian welcome the host of the podcasts Director's Club and Pop Culture Club (both part of the Now Playing Network, nowplayingnetwork.net) Jim Laczkowski to discuss Liz Phair's debut exile in Guyville (1993, Matador). Through talent and a little luck, Phair turned her demo project into being signed by Matador records. She took the $3000 given to her to record a single and instead did an entire album with producer Brad Wood. Hailed for its lo-fi charm and the brazen attitude of the the songwriter it showcased, the album, went on to find critical success and a devoted fanbase. Jim shares how he came across this album as a lucky 15 year old with cool friends. Bill, Brian, and Jim discuss Phair's career choices and her major label turn, how Guyville is supposedly tracked to respond to the Rolling Stone's Exile on Main Street, the difference between lo-fi and "hi-fi," Phair's low vocal tone, the acerbic Steve Albini, the atrociously 90s-styled video for "Never Said," how weird it is that some in the media have labeled Liz Phair a "sex kitten," Jim's favorite Chicago bands, and more as we make our way through the album track by track.
Bill speaks with Director’s Club host and Now Playing Network founder Jim Laczkowski. In addition to talking about podcasts, both his own and those of others, they discuss his early years directing short comedies to make his classmates laugh, his long history with WGN Radio film critic Nick Digilio, EVIL DEAD 2, near-death experiences, PUMP UP THE VOLUME, bandwagon mentality, the Chicago film critic community, drive-in theatres, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, experiences touring as a solo musician, critic screenings and the enduring scent of Roger Ebert’s sandwich. From "Video Killed The Radio Star" to Beyonce's "Lemonade," I have been intoxicated and dazzled by the artistry behind music videos. Of course, I'm not alone, and my guest today could probably teach a class on the subject and hopefully will get to program a music video festival event someday. Writer extraordinare Heather Drain joins me to discuss favorite music videos, our first experiences, growing up with MTV, and of course, the fact that many acclaimed directors got their start making videos early on. Big names like David Fincher, William Friedkin, Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, and my personal favorite, Mark Romanek, are all discussed at some point or another. I also manage to magically insert Keri Russell (as Felicity) into the conversation, talk about the first 45RPM record I owned, and so much more including the possibility that David Cronenberg might've ghost directed a particular scene in the video for "Jeopardy" by The Greg Kihn Band. Even at 2 and a half hours, there's still so much more ground to cover including our love for Bjork, Gary Newman and The Killing Joke so there will definitely be a sequel episode to this discussion later this year. Thank you so much to Heather for coming on the show and educating me beyond belief. And thank you for listening to this! RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB: Pop Culture Club is back again, here on the newly launched Now Playing Network! I know I said this before, but this will be the last episode that is available through both the Director's Club feed, and the regular Pop Culture Club feed here This time I mean it so please subscribe via ITunes to Pop Culture Club separately. So I once opened for a musician that instantly became a favorite of mine. Her name is Karrie Hopper, and most recently, her and her sister formed a band called The Room Outside. They went on two tours, got a lot of positive press, and rightfully so. Their self-titled debut was my favorite record of that year. A conversation about Karrie's songwriting process and influences has been long overdue, and I'm so happy to share it with you now. Please do buy her two records linked below and support everything she does. At the end of the interview, I play a song that has recently become one of my favorite songs ever written. I play it in its entirety in hopes that it'll motivate you to buy the entire record, preferably on vinyl if you have a record player. Thank you so much for listening, and all my gratitude goes out to Karrie for inspiring me for nearly a decade now. It's been awhile since I've podcasted but there's a slew of episodes coming your way for the next month or so. First up, I welcome to the show, live in-studio, music enthusiast and vinyl expert Jim Hanke, who will soon become a part of The Now Playing Network family next month! I asked him to stop on by so we could talk music for 2 hours, including his podcast plans, our Nick Digilio connection, and other pop culture tidbits. The bulk of the conversation revolves around our favorite records of 2015, starting with some honorable mentions, then at about the 46 minute mark, we reveal our Top 5 favorites. Our lists will be available in blog form, in a couple of days over at Pop Culture Club in case you missed a title. Can't thank you enough for listening as always, and mad props to Jim for his expertise and enthusiasm. 00:00 - 01:30 - Intro / Nick Digilio Mention 01:31 - 46:05 - Jim Hanke Introduction / 2015 Records (Honorable Mentions)46:06 - 1:06:59 - Top 5 Records of 2015 (Numbers 5 & 4)1:07:00 - 1:07:28 - "Bury Our Friends" - Sleater-Kinney1:07:29 - 1:44:30 - Top 5 Records of 2015 (Numbers 3, 2, 1)1:44:31 - 1:54:14 - My Other Favorites / Outro1:54:15 - 1:55:00 - "Mind On Fire" - Dan DeaconIMPORTANT FYI: This will also be the last Pop Culture Club episode that will cross-pollinate (sortaspeak) in the Director's Club feed. So as of next year, you're going to want to subscribe to a separate Pop Culture Club ITunes feed if you wanna hear me interview various guests and nerd out about things other than filmmakers. I'll include that link soon enough as well once it's available. In a few days, I will be joined by Patrick Ripoll and Sergio Mims to talk about the incredibly profilic Michael Curtiz, and then in January, our Episode 100 extravaganza / year-end best-of show will commence!
