In 1977, Ed Stewart was a happy-go-lucky teenager with his whole life ahead of him. With a new engineering job, a girlfriend and a motorbike, life was good. But when he dropped in on a friend's party, a violent row with another teenager - who was carrying a shotgun - turned Ed's whole life on its head. Ed had to learn to navigate the world in an entirely different way, but he made a success of it - becoming a piano tuner to the stars and counting Jools Holland and Brian Ferry as his customers. Despite a life of adversity, he tells Dr Sian Williams how not just one, but two Life Changing moments led him to be what he refers to as a “glass-three-quarters-full” kind of bloke. 156 - Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) In episode 156 “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. In their conversation Phil talks a little bit about where he lives in Sussex in England and his neighbors David Gilmore, Bill Bruford Then he talks guitars, particularly his Gibson Firebird VII and what he was using for amps back in the day and now and the guitar he's still craving. Phil tells us a bit about his book “50 Years of Music” and what he's using for gear for the book tour and where to get the self published book. Phil describes growing up in Havana Cuba during the revolution… and learning the guitar amongst the chaos. He also describes living in Hawaii just as it became a state and how that inspired a song “Hula Kula” for Roxy Music. Phil describes playing through a Hiwatt amp while Brian Ferry was singing in Roxy Music. Phil tells us about how he ended up in England and how he befriended David Gilmore and he disspells the rumors that he joined Roxy Music initially as a guitar tech. Phil describes being ahead of his time or at least being the cutting edge of fashion and musical trends and how everyone from Roxy Music at this advanced age are still making music and he describes what being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means to him and the band. And finally Phil tells about still playing nylon string guitar mostly to his grandchildren. Ever wondered what it's like to transition from being one of the UK's first graffiti writers to a distinguished DJ and producer? In our latest episode, we sit down with Richard Sen, who not only faced prison for his graffiti but also first started DJIng through the Acid House movement of the late '80s. We journey through his eclectic career, exploring his collaborations with icons like Brian Ferry and LCD Soundsystem, and discussing the impact of his new album "India Man," which delves deep into his multicultural heritage.Richard's story is a captivating blend of musical evolution and cultural exploration. From early influences shaped by a legendary Rolling Stones concert to discovering his own music taste through the Two-Tone movement and 80s pop, Richard takes us through the sounds that formed his artistic persona. We also explore the profound influence of hip-hop on his life, particularly how seminal works like "Subway Art" and "Style Wars" inspired his graffiti art during the turbulent times of Thatcher's Britain. But Richard's journey doesn't stop at music and art. He's also a criminology scholar and volunteer, dedicated to helping prisoners reintegrate into society. We discuss how his academic pursuits and volunteer work with Saint Giles Trust have provided him with a unique perspective on the justice system. Join us for an episode rich with personal anecdotes, cultural insights, and the transformative power of art and community. To let us know the artists you'd like to hear, send us an email or even a letter. GUEST OVERVIEW: Tessa Lena is a strongly opinionated musician, writer, and philosopher living in New York. She is a classically trained pianist and singer, born and raised in Moscow. As a teenager, Tessa had the honor of performing her own composition at the Moscow Conservatory and wanted to be a geneticist. As her interests expanded to Tibetan music and language, she headed to Lhasa with a backpack to do ethnomusicology research. After being attacked by a sex trafficker in Tibet and successfully fighting him off, Tessa settled in Chicago where she started a band working with her hero Ian McDonald (of King Crimson and Foreigner) and drummer Alan Lake (who has played and recorded with Madonna, Brian Ferry, Julian Lennon, Ministry, Brian Wilson and Sam Moore from Sam And Dave). After a few years in Chicago, Tessa moved to New York and started a new band, TESSA MAKES LOVE, along with occasional collaborations by Ian McDonald. In 2016, Tessa started Coalition for Artistic Dignity and organized a conference in Brooklyn dedicated to artistic dignity, social power and corporate responsibility. In early 2017, she released an album titled ‘Tessa Fights Robots' - which is also the name of her Substack blog; both the album and the blog are "about being human in the world of technology, big data, and machine-like people." https://www.tessamakeslove.com/ https://tessa.substack.com/ X/Twitter: @TessaMakesLove

The story behind the Roxy Music song 'More Than This' starts with the band's frontman Brian Ferry. Growing up in Newcastle, England, Ferry's parents wanted him to become a lawyer, but he had other plans. He developed a passion for music and would often distribute the famous magazine Melody Maker to immerse himself in the industry. He later formed Roxy Music, a band known for their blend of rock, pop, and art, with Ferry as the lead singer and songwriter. 'More Than This' was written by Ferry in the early 80s, as he was going through a tumultuous time in his personal life. It was inspired by the idea of wanting something more in a relationship, and the haunting melody captures the melancholic sentiment perfectly. In this podcast episode, we'll explore the story behind the song, the inspiration behind the lyrics, and the impact it had on Roxy Music's career.

We had a blast talking with Emily Dolan Davies. She's a London, UK-based drummer who has certainly found her way to some of the biggest stages and in some of the coolest studios touring and recording with the likes of Brian Ferry, Thomas Dolby, The Darkness, and Kim Wilde, with whom she is about to go on the road with. We caught up to her after Steve saw her on the Netflix music documentary, "Count Me In" where Emily was one of the featured drummers right there alongside, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stuart Copeland of the Police, and Roger Taylor of Queen, among others. All creatives who play a unique role of keeping time and order for their musical partners. Kind-of like being a sonic string. What Steve saw in Emily in the film, "Count Me In," was on display in this episode of Kites and Strings, and that is that Emily is so much fun and so loves her job as a band's time-piece, all while getting totally lost in the sheer glee of beating a drum with a stick. We certainly hear about her work, her drummer origin story, her high-points and some of her low points. Emily is quite candid about how she has used drums as a vessel in which to throw her most difficult situations and feelings, and she finds that her chosen instrument never fails to give back. In addition to drumming, we hear about other creative ventures, such as having her own podcast and a mobile recording business, as well as her generous want to assist and support young musicians who are trying to break into music industry and/or drumming. So settle into your drummer throne and enjoy listening to how Emily Dolan Davies grabs her string and flies he kite. Tessa Lena discusses her foray into writing about The Great Reset via her popular Substack which is also featured on prominent websites such as Mercola.com. She never imagined the dystopian future would come so soon. In an attempt to explain what's going on today, she examines the Great Resets of the past, from Russian serfdom, to the Russian Revolution (Lenin's "Great Reset"), and growing up during the collapse of the Soviet Union. She talks about "disease blackmail" and how she's skeptical on putting much weight on "isms", but the ideology of Davos communism is what the Bolsheviks were using. She talks about rock stars going "Covid Central," what the Algorithm Ghetto might look like, and how we all have an inner technocrat. Tessa doesn't think Davos will get what it wants because it's just too crazy. I enjoyed the link you sent me with the Jet Harris interview.....I didn't know he was the first to use a Fender electric bass guitar....good stuff...I met Jet when I was working on Radio Merseyside....and we had a few pints in the local ....before he went tee total....and chatted about his adventures with The Shadows and I got some interesting inside info... he really was a nice fella and like most of those who have been there he was very humble.....a sad loss. I watched a programme on ABBA....it's hard to believe how good they were....I can't remember them making a bad record....and they made most of them in several languages....and I also watched the 2017 E.L.O. concert in Wembley arena.....mind blowing.....I know you are a big Beatles fan mate....you can have 'em......no comparison......and needless to say we have none stop Christmas records on various channels on the telly....I can't REALLY complain because back in the day I wrote a Christmas musical for Radio City which contained six Christmas songs....I wrote the script and all the songs and it was broadcast on Christmas Day.......the two members of the station involved changed the names of the two main characters which they felt gave them the right to regard themselves as the writers.....but that's another story....the play was nominated for a Sony Award and was performed by several local schools....I also wrote another two Xmas musicals which again several local schools performed......so all in all I have written 18 Christmas songs....plus a few others....so I had better not criticise those we hear every year. Still on the music scene Channel 5 have a weekly look at the best selling records of the 70s....this week was 1979....it is a fascinating programme which counts down the 30 best sellers and gives the background to the songs with the likes of Brian Ferry,Queen and Michael Jackson who was really good looking back then before he altered his face....not sure why......I've watched the whole series and must applaud Channel 5 for a great programme...and surprisingly enough Bradley Walsh wasn't on it. I recently came across a magazine article about my chance meeting with wrestler Adrian Street which led to me writing and producing two albums of wrestling songs for him.....which involved me going to The States and appearing on TV with him....we became great friends and are still in touch.....the albums have recently been re-released by an American company and can be downloaded from the internet....the songs keep coming back to haunt me...with titles like "Violence is Golden"..."Merchant of Menace" and "I'm In Love With Me"...it is hardly surprising.....I could write a book on my adventures we had in Florida but no-one would believe it. So this week I would like to feature a song which I was told by a major label that the world would never be ready for....they were NOT impressed......it was one I composed for Adrian Street which he used to enter the ring to.....it ended up in a movie called "Grunt-The Wrestling Movie" and also on MTV in the States.....so the song which the world would never be ready for paid off my mortgage......it is entitled "Imagine What I Could Do To You"
Still on the music scene Channel 5 have a weekly look at the best selling records of the 70s....this week was 1979....it is a fascinating programme which counts down the 30 best sellers and gives the background to the songs with the likes of Brian Ferry,Queen and Michael Jackson who was really good looking back then before he altered his face....not sure why......I've watched the whole series and must applaud Channel 5 for a great programme...and surprisingly enough Bradley Walsh wasn't on it.

Episode 74 of Pudding On The Wrist finds your faithful deejay, Frozen Lazuras, spinning choice cuts from Brian Ferry, Big Blood, Sierra Ferrell, Jacques Dutronc, Satanic Togas, and more.
Tessa Lena, a strongly opinionated artist and writer living in New York city discusses regaining our humanity in a time of technology, big data, and machine-like people. Tessa describes how treacherous the growth and merging of technology will be for humanity. This “agenda” uses humans as a resource. We are a means to an end to serve technology. Our humanity is stripped as we become less free and less able to touch and communicate with each other. She is a classically trained pianist and singer, born and raised in Moscow. As a teenager, Tessa had the honor of performing her own composition at the Moscow Conservatory. Additionally, she wanted to be a geneticist.
Big Daddy talks about Brian Eno's involvement in Roxy Music, how the lead singer got Big Daddy some love and more! For Your Pleasure comes in at #48 on The Countdown
Dee Dee Warwick - You’re No Good (1963) The original version that, to my ears, cuts the Ronstadt version in half. Clint Ballard also wrote "The Game of Love" for Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. Look at that slugabed 2nd to the right. That's Eric Stewart of 10cc. Comb your hair, hippie. Doc Severinsen - Barbarella (1968) The theme to the soft-core romp featuring Jane Fonda. Check out the party scene for a frugging Spiro Agnew. Doc Severinsen was the comic foil and bandleader for Johnny Carson. With the funny suit jackets, etc. Doris (with Plums) - You Made a Fool of Me (1968) While this single is not from this album, it IS a bonus track if you can find this. I love her stuff. In fact, I confess to you right now that my song, "Epiphany", steals the first three chords of the verse. Those nutty Swedes. First, we steal ABBA. Then we steal this. Gary Crosby - I'm Gonna Call My Baby (1967) Son of the guy that sang "Hey Jude". James Iron Head Baker & Group - Black Betty (1933) A rendition of the slave song. Later, a hit for Ram Jam, who's singer was previously in The Lemon Pipers, who had a hit with "Green Tambourine." Johnny Buckett and his Cumberland River Boys - Hippie in a Blunder (1967-8) The anti-hippie sentiment of the late '60s was silly, tone-deaf (Bob Seger and Jan and Dean recorded anti-peacenik songs), and ultimately unnecessary since the peace movement itself would be bought, sold, repackaged, and neutered entirely just a couple of years later. Roxy Music - Manifesto (1979) I can't listen to Brian Ferry's vibrato for a very long time, but this song seems to be a good fit. Like a salesman. Redbone - Fais Do (1972) My confession. She will never see this post, but I used to dream about singing "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" to Julie Pawlowski (of Emporium Avenue) all the time. I still would. My god, I owned this on 8-track, a 2 tape set. I don't remember the TV commercial but there had to be one. "Magic Carpet Ride", "Fais Do", "Family Affair", so many songs. One after the other. Do you ever hear a song and snap into a place and time that hasn't entered your mind in decades? I got on the bus a few stops before her and would always sit in the middle of the two-space seat so that no one would take her spot. I think it worked once. Gladys Knight and the Pips - Come Together (1975) The Harvey Averne Dozen - The Word (1967) This is one of my favorite Beatle covers. Simple and funky. Sonny and Cher - It’s Gonna Rain (1965) No one talks about this b-side, the best thing I think Sonny or Cher ever did. His voice actually compliments the lyrics. There's a version where two different (and I mean different) lead vocal takes are played simultaneously. I don't think Sonny was that subversive, to be honest. Intentionally. Steve Clayton - (Girls Are Imitating) Twiggy (1967) Discogs: Vocalist and songwriter with a long and varied career. Released numerous singles in the late 1950s and early 1960s in various musical styles but never achieved a hit. I like Steve Clayton a real lot. This is very similar music to "Music To Watch Girls By" which was a hit at the time. He is like Mel Tormé true, but I can hear another music industry schlepper, Tony Bruno. If you are a vinyl junkie-type person and you marinate in the smoky studios of the '70s in your mind occasionally, do me a favor: Find a copy of his 1978 album Steve Not David. Does he mean David Clayton Thomas? I mean, by that time, no one cared about either one. The Beach Boys - Belles of Paris (1978) Horribly uncomfortable Mike Love emoting of some pretty awful lyrics, even by his standards. Bobby Byrd - I Know You Got Soul (1971) Bobby Lee Trammell - New Dance in France (1964) ANOTHER music orphan. He tried to be Jerry Lee Lewis, and he came THAT close, but the fates dictated otherwise. God, this episode of my show is sadder than usual. Listen for the fake audience and the attempt to glom onto Beatlemania. Unlike Tony Bruno and Steve Clayton, Trammell DOES have a Wikipedia page. Boffalongo - Dancing In The Moonlight (1970) The original version. The version that hit big was actually the third version. Adam West - Miranda (1966) The Free Design - Friends (Thank You All) (1971) Alex Harvey was the original punk. His singing career began in fucking 1958. It would be 17 YEARS before he sniffed the Top 40 in the UK, and people in the USA have never heard of him mostly. But those of us who have heard of SAHB are a universally smitten lot. This was a fantastic group that never took itself too seriously. This is a common thread in great bands. They recorded until 1978, but unlike other groups of the time, their last album, Rock Drill, was just as good as the ones they recorded at their peak of popularity. I present my favorite SAHB tracks. But I like many more. Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Hot City Symphony (1974) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Give My Compliments To The Chef (1975) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Shake That Thing (1975) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Dolphins (1979) Johnny Mathis - Love Is All (Theme from “Midnight Cowboy”) (1970) Lorne Greene - Bonanza! (1964) Andy Williams - Music To Watch Girls By (1967) ??? - ??? Rodd Keith - Let's Go Savage You And I (?) A song-poem. Leonard Nimoy - I Walk The Line (1970) Starland Vocal Band - Liberated Woman (1977) I mentioned this song on the Setlusting Bruce podcast. I called this my favorite (or was it least favorite) SVB song, because of my love for the chauvinistic sentiment masked as chivalry. Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Love Story (1972) #5 in the Netherlands! From Buffalo, NY!!! Eric Burdon & The Animals - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1967) Neil Sedaka - Dimbo Man (1972)

Wealth and excess go together; emptiness and detachment are right around the corner. This song delves into all of that, along with a particular obsession. What do you do when money no longer buys you a thrill? Bryan Ferry has some thoughts...NOTE: Though there's no profanity used in this episode, the discussion does involve sexual activities so be warned... you might wanna listen to this one on headphones. Tessa Lena is a strongly opinionated musician living in New York. She is a classically trained pianist and singer, born and raised in Moscow. Her bio reads like a movie script. As a teenager, Tessa had the honor of performing her own composition (entitled ‘In Defense of the Environment) at the Moscow Conservatory, and wanted to be a geneticist. As her interests expanded to Tibetan music and language, she headed to Lhasa with a backpack to do enthomusicology research. After being attacked by a sex trafficker in Tibet and successfully fighting him off, Tessa settled in Chicago. In Chicago, she started a band working with her hero Ian McDonald of King Crimson and Foreigner, and drummer Alan Lake, who has played and recorded with Madonna, Brian Ferry, Julian Lennon, Ministry, Brian Wilson and Sam Moore from Sam And Dave. After a few years in Chicago, Tessa moved to New York and started a new band, Tessa Makes Love, along with occasional collaborations by Ian McDonald. In 2013, her music video “Spente Le Stelle” received over a million very useful views on YouTube although the jury is still out on how many people realized that the video was a satire making fun of sexual objectification. Alas, the world keeps spinning, and it is still imperfect! In 2016, Tessa started Coalition for Artistic Dignity and organized a conference in Brooklyn dedicated to artistic dignity, social power and corporate responsibility. In early 2017, she released an album titled ‘Tessa Fights Robots,’ you can listen and buy it here. Since the English language only has so many words, her blog is also called ‘Tessa Fights Robots.’ Both the album and the blog are about being human in the world of technology, big data, and machine-like people.

While at our denomination's general assembly, I sat down with a friend to discuss what neighboring and hospitality looks like at his church. Brian Ferry is on the pastoral staff at New City Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's a church that loves their community. Every summer they rent out a local amusement park and invite everyone they can for a summer party. New City is one church that helped inspire this summer's reading series.
