The Film Freaks gladly go back to the hard-boiled and raunchy 1930s when Hollywood was making movies that adults flocked to see—gritty films full of violence, sex, drug abuse, questioning religion, and giving it to the system…you know, like college. But as talkies came in, the studio writers decided to have fun with this new thing called dialogue so these flicks crackle with quips, come ons, and frank talk about infidelity and breaking the law. The Great Depression was happening so audiences looking for escape embraced these bawdy, raw movies and enjoyed the wild, reckless rides it took them on. Soon to be famous directors like Frank Capra, William Wellman, and Mervyn LeRoy helmed rising stars like Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck, and Norma Shearer in these classic pieces of "Forbidden Hollywood." So, when you're done at the speakeasy swilling bathtub gin, give the Film Freaks latest episode a listen and you'll be one dizzy hepcat, see? That's right! Today we have ANOTHER special BONUS episode, covering William Wellman's The Public Enemy. This "gangster" classic was released on April 23, 1931, so  it fits right in with our regular Oscar timeline, but this movie wasn't nominated for Outstanding Production (but it was nominated for Best Original Story--although it didn't win).  So why are we discussing it? Because, once again, a film made at the same time as our nominees this season has managed to grapple its way into our collective consciousness, especially regarding criminals. This is a “full-length” episode. A tonally disparate pair of great films for Paramount 1941: Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, one of the greatest movies ever made, according to Elise; and a real rarity, William Wellman's Reaching for the Sun, starring some important Sturges actors: Joel McCrea, Ellen Drew, and Eddie Bracken. We interrogate the strange central relationship in The Lady Eve, examining its sadistic, maternal, narcissistic, you-name-it qualities, and Sturges' masterful blending of comedy tropes, melodrama structure, and painful personal psychology. Then we turn to the interesting mixture of "universal" (20th century Western) gender tropes and modern modifications of them in Wellman's tale of a man torn between urban opportunity and Thoreauvian freedom. Then, in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we briefly discuss the Coen brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and its curious misunderstandings of Capra, and Brian De Palma's brilliant Femme Fatale and its channeling of Lynch and Verhoeven, but with De Palma's peculiar mixture of sweetness and satire.  Time Codes: 0h 01m 00s:      THE LADY EVE [dir. Jimmy Cagney etched his place in cinema history in one of his first films as he plays vicious beer baron Tom Powers in this hugely influential gangster flick. Apart from Jean Harlow, most of his co-stars and even his director (William Wellman) have been forgotten, even though the performances are quite naturalistic for a flick that was made 90 years ago. And, yes, The Public Enemy is the picture where Cagney squishes a grapefruit in Mae Clarke’s face. That iconic moment hasn’t aged well, but most of the movie has. So get ready to root for the (very) bad guy who ain’t so tough as the 384th Ellises’ Analysis zips through a brief episode like the 2 mugs we are. They Say I Come From Hollywood Royalty... So Where’s My Crown? is a collection of delightful and funny stories by Cissy Wellman about her life growing up in Hollywood. As the daughter of one of America’s most famous directors, William “Wild Bill” Wellman (whose films include Wings, A Star Is Born, Beau Geste, The Story of G.I. Joe, The Ox-Bow Incident, Public Enemy and dozens of others), Cissy counted among her friends some of the great directors, actors and singers of all time, including director Howard Hawks and the legendary Elvis Presley. But this book is not a tell-all; instead, these stories reveal the good heartedness, humor and loyalty of Hollywood stars. Cissy describes her triumphs and hard times as a dancer, choreographer and actor (she appeared in The Waltons for five seasons as well as many other shows), her many adventures with friends, and the love she shared with two wonderful men. A delightful, heartwarming book. Cissy Wellman, actress, dancer, director, writer, the fifth of seven children. She is the daughter of pioneer film director/producer/writer William A. Wellman, also known as Wild Bill Wellman, and Busby Berkeley dancer and actor Dorothy Coonan. Raised on a 4+ acre farm in Brentwood, California, Cissy now lives in Valley Village, California with her cats, hummingbirds, squirrels and on occasion racoons. https://youtu.be/OwvBebZSrg4 https://www.amazon.com/They-Hollywood-Royalty-Wheres-Crown/dp/B08L4C8NWK https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0920048/

This fairytale-like portrayal of a young girl’s struggle to escape the corruption of the Zambian community who wrongly accuse her of witchcraft silently defies scapegoating those who challenge the status quo. Through the mesmerizing performance of Mulubwa, the absurdity of modern-day patriarchal and governmental “witch criers” is revealed and the strength and wisdom of young women to overcome them is never underestimated. Reel Reflections:  What are you tethered to? How do you define freedom? How far would you go to be free from corruption, greed and hatred? Many of Peter's guests have expressed their feelings about cinema through words. Gina Telaroli prefers images, both moving and still. The experimental filmmaker, image essay maker, and critic sits down with Peter for a very engaging conversation about her work and passion. The two dive into her frame-by-frame analysis of classic Hollywood films and the "unconscious cinema" she unlocks, as well as her obsession with Hollywood workmen Allan Dwan and William Wellman. Peter also gushes about Gina's film Traveling Light, and asks her numerous questions about what he sees as a spiritual work of cinema.
