How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful! James and Connor are building a Ship To Wreck and talking about the smash-hit third record by Florence + The Machine. From emotional introspective rockers to soulful ballads, Florence Welch can sing it all (with her impressive 3-octave vocal range)! We'll talk about her favorite smells, turbulent travel, and throat-donor fans during Fact Or Spin, and Connor will have some VERY tough decisions to make. It's an album that's full of water-free water songs that have both peakish and valleyish tendencies. In the photograph, "How Beautiful are the Feet," we see a circle showing only the feet of the dancers. On one foot, they wear a point shoe. On the other, the foot is completely bare. One foot is dressed for being on stage, beautifully presentable. The other, not so much. It shows evidence of the blood, sweat, and tears—the bruises, pain, and injury. Feet are the means by which the Minato City Ballet Company brings the good news of the gospel to people. ...
Jenny and I are taking the week off to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The success of our No Compromise conversations, in which I always say, "Qu'ils sont beaux, lex pieds" to introduce my Jenny, is here explained. Jenny was God's gift of grace to me, my path back to His arms. On Valentine's Day 2022, we posted my original poem to Jenny on our Simple Gifts podcast. We repost that episode here on the Christian Atheist. Qu'ils sont beaux les pieds, "How Beautiful are the Feet" (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15) is my love song to my Jenny this Valentine's Day! My love has only grown exponentially since we married. My one earthly goal is to spend every available second with her! Yeats' poem "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" was my foundational poetic influence in writing this piece, but there were many, many more, some of which I trace out in this episode. On page 290 of the Artscroll biography of Rav Pam, it says that the Gemara (Yoma 35b) tells us that after 120 years we are going to be judged. People will have all kinds of excuses for why they couldn't do this or that, but the Gemara says that there are three great Rabbis that are going to obligate others. If someone says that he was too wealthy so he had no time to learn, we have Rabbi Eliezer ben Harsun, who was fabulously wealthy, and he obligates the rich. If someone says that he was very handsome and surrounded by beautiful people so he could not control his desires, Yosef HaSaddik, who resisted the enticement of Potiphar's wife, will obligate those people. If someone says that they were poor, and because of their poverty they could not learn, Hillel, who suffered extreme poverty and climbed on top of the roof on a snowy day and almost froze to death in order to learn Torah will obligate the poor. Rav Pam added to that Gemara, quoting the Elder of Novardok that there is a moment in every person's life, when he achieves something great, and that moment obligates him to maintain that level of achievement for the rest of his life. That means that you will obligate yourself. You might say that you can't be nice to people because that is not your style- but what about the one time that you were nice? That will obligate you, because you do know how to do it. Of course, this doesn't mean that we should avoid doing great things in order to avoid the obligation. God will see through that as well. What it means is that we have to do our best, and once we show ourselves what we are capable of, we have to live up to that. Rav Pam related that in his mind, he knew the moment in his life that obligated him for the rest of his life. It was when an elderly member of the Torah Vadaat minyan took ill and was hospitalized. Rav Pam was a Kohen, and so he could not visit the man, but he took the time to write him a letter. Although halachically, writing a letter does not fulfilled the mitzva of Bikur Holim, he wanted a man to know that he had been thinking of him. When man passed away shortly thereafter, Rav Pam was told that the man had kept the letter under his pillow, and whenever a visitor would enter his room, he would take out the letter and show them the letter that Rav Pam, the Rosh Yeshiva , had written to him. Rav Pam pointed out that a simple letter, which took only moments to write, had lifted the spirits of that sick man in a way that he had never imagined. This incident served as a lesson to him, of how seemingly insignificant acts, that take only a little bit of time, can result in great achievements. This obligated him to utilize such opportunities in the future. How Beautiful! Let us look back at our lives and see all the great moments, and B'Ezrat Hashem, keep it up. Have a wonderful day.

A new MP3 sermon from Pastor Nick Holden is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: How Beautiful… Subtitle: John's Gospel Speaker: Nick Holden Broadcaster: Pastor Nick Holden Event: Sunday Afternoon Date: 2/20/2025 Bible: John 5; Romans 10:9-17 Length: 42 min.
“How Beautiful are the Feet” Romans 10:14-21 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who [a]preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: “Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.” 19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says: “I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation, I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.” 20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me;I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me. 21 But to Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out My hands To a disobedient and contrary people.” History- this letter was written to persecuted Roman believers. They were under the severe oppression and persecution of the Roman government. At this time, there were multiple gods and temples for worship. The government did not care which god you worshipped, so they did not much care which god the Christians worshipped. However, Christians are appointed to call Jesus “Lord”. Under the Roman empire, only Caesar was permitted to be called “lord”, as this was a sign of ownership and authority. Many Christians were required to attend the pagan temple once a year and proclaim, “Caesar is Lord”, or else they could lose their job, family, or even their very lives. We do not think much about this now- but it was a real threat under the Roman empire to proclaim that Caesar is lord. What does this mean? How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? The apostle having observed, that whoever, Jew or Gentile, believe in the Lord and confess “Jesus is Lord”, shall be saved; and that the same Lord was ready and willing to dispense His grace, without any difference to them; that hearing they might believe, and so call upon the name of the Lord, and be saved. Paul tells us there can be no true calling upon God without faith, no faith without hearing, no hearing without preaching, and no preaching without a divine mission. There is no hearing of Christ, and salvation by Him, without the preaching of the Word of God; the most normal way of hearing from God is by the ministry of the Word. Paul shows not only the necessity and usefulness of preaching, but also points out the subject matter of it, which is Christ, and him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Acts 4:10-12 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” 1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a [a]stumbling block and to the [b]Greeks foolishness, Paul says the message matters. They that preach ought to preach to the glory of God, otherwise men may hear the preacher, and not hear Christ. Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah: "Isaiah said, Who hath believed our report?” Isaiah 53:1-5 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no [a]form or [b]comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no [c]beauty that we should desire Him.

This week, Ali and Kempy discuss once in a generation talent, the wildly successful Florence and the Machine. Florence Welch was born in Camberwell, South London, to Nick – an advertising executive and Evelyn – a university professor. The bands’ name started as a private joke between her and childhood friend and long-time keyboard player and collaborator, Isabella – or Isa Summers. Early gigs billed them as Florence Robot and Isa Machine, but in time the length of the name drove them mad and they became Florence and the Machine.Even before releasing their debut album, there was a lot of hype around Florence, known for her powerful vocal performances, eccentric stage persona and for performing barefoot. They were invited to play Glastonbury, support Blur at Hyde Park and won the critics choice award at the 2009 Brit awards.A 2009 BBC review of Lungs describes the bands' style of music as ‘soul inspired indie’ meets ‘Tim Burton style fairytales’. Certainly, the emotive lyrics in her early work are full of dark imagery that contrast the ethereal music, now synonymous with huge percussion, the use of harmony and choirs and, of course, the infamous harp. After 28 consecutive weeks on the UK album charts, it reached the summit and the band scored their first number one album. The album reached number 14 in the US Billboard 200 and has sold over 3 million copies worldwideShe built upon the identifiable sound on her incredible debut with 2011’s Ceremonials and 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, which – she admits – was very difficult and at times traumatic thing to create, and documents the breakdown of a relationship. In 2015, while recovering from a broken foot herself, she stepped up to headline the Glastonbury festival when Foo Fighters had to pull out due to Dave Grohl breaking his leg after falling offstage during a gig. They covered Foos’ song, Times Like These, in a memorable set that only reinforced her as a once in a generation talent who thoroughly deserved to top the bill at Worthy Farm on her own merit, and no doubt would have done so even if Mr Grohl hadn’t broken his leg.In an interview with Annie Mac for Radio 1 in 2018, Florence confessed that here ‘attachment to reality is tenuous at the best of times’, and she topped off an incredible decade with her fourth album, High As Hope, which saw her giving herself a producer credit for the first time and debuts more direct and honest lyrical style about her life and struggles with alcohol and eating disorders. Also in this episode. the boys discuss the strangest modes of transport that they've taken to gigs, upcoming live stream shows and how a board game based on Never Mind the Buzzcock's 'Guess the Song' round nearly ended Ali's relationship.EPISODE LINKSFlorence and the Machine at the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer TrustFlorence and the Machine official websiteFoo Fighters album pre-order (supporting independent record stores)Liam Gallagher 'Down By the River Thames' live stream ticketsRadio One interview with Annie MacShame - Alphabet (this week's support band)Thames Clipper Boats, Ali's preferred mode of transportation Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review if you're enjoying these episodes, and follow us on Instagram and Twitter.

During this pandemic, we have been faced with our limitations that we are not always able to be present and close with those we love. Yet, Pastor Vince shares with us that Jesus is not nor will ever lost His ability to be ever present with us. Nothing will ever stop Him to have beautiful communion with us. May we accept His invitation to walk in communion with Him every day. The post Sunday Worship 5/3/20 “How Beautiful” appeared first on Immanuel Baptist Church.

There are places in the human experience where ordinary language falls short but where poetry can find a way in. Gregory Orr has used lyric poetry to wrest gentle, healing, life-giving words from one of the most terrible traumas imaginable. On a hunting trip with his father at the age of 12, he accidentally shot and killed his younger brother. Since then, he says he has found consolation in words and story. “What’s beautiful about a poem is that you take on this chaos and this responsibility, and you shape it into order and make something of it,” he says. Gregory Orr taught English at the University of Virginia from 1975 to 2019 and founded its Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing. His books of prose include “The Blessing,” “Poetry as Survival,” and “A Primer for Poets and Readers of Poetry.” He is the author of over 10 books of poetry including “How Beautiful the Beloved” and a forthcoming collection, “The Last Love Poem I Will Ever Write.” This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode “Gregory Orr — Shaping Grief With Language.” Find more at onbeing.org.

Setting is NOT by Mary Lynn Lightfoot but I can't find who it *is* by.If you're just discovering us, welcome! This episode was first uploaded to SoundCloud & iTunes in April or May 2018.

Today, we are releasing Part 2 of our conversation with Jim Calder and Charlie Umland, on Situationism. In the last episode, we addressed some of the basic concepts and arguments of the Situationists, focusing largely on their critique of capitalist modernity. In today’s episode, we turn to question of strategy, and the way the approach of the Situationists to political engagement. We think this is a timely episode — coming to you as it is, right in the middle of the 50th anniversary of the student revolt in Paris, of May 1968 — an event with which the situationists are often associated, sometimes even being seen as among the key standard-bearers of its intellectual values! For those unfamiliar, the early weeks of May 1968 saw an major wave of student actions in Paris, protesting the closure and police invasions of University campuses at Nanterre and the Sorbonne. On Tuesday, May 14, the workers’ movements came out and joined the students, and a number of workplace occupations began, including at the Sud Aviation plant near Nantes, and at a Renault parts factory, near Rouen. By May 16, France was in the grip of a General Strike. The workers had occupied close to fifty factories, and hundreds of thousands workers were out on strike, across the country. By the end of the following week, ten million workers were on strike — a figure which amounted to about two-thirds of the entire French workforce. And its no surprise of course, just as with the 100-year anniversary of the Russian Revolution last October, that the 50th anniversary of May ’68 is a big topic of discussion among the left right now. May 68 is the theme of the latest issue of Jacobin, for example, and there’s a great piece on the Paris uprising in there by Jonah Birch, called “How Beautiful it Was’. Birch argues that, although de Gaulle was eventually able to restore order, and the movement eventually collapsed into infighting: …even now, May ’68 remains a potent political symbol of the Left’s hopes for a mass movement to challenge capitalism. Nowhere else in the Western world over the past half century was such a threat to capitalism posed. Listeners might was to check out Birch’s piece (I’ll add a link as soon as there is a web version available). Its a great primer for anyone who wants a bit more background on the May ’68 moment. He has a really interesting discussion the economic and social factors in France at the time, and the extent to which they might have served as triggers of the student uprising. But what’s interesting about Birch’s account is that it mentions the Situationists only once, and then only as a way of sort of flagging an incorrect way of remembering May ’68 — Birch cites the slogans and art terrorism of the situationists, as if by way of ascribing them a merely horizontalist politics, or a politics of everyday life. Similarly, in the latest episode of the Aufhebunga Bunga podcast, Catherine Liu also discusses May ’68 as nothing more than the sensational arrival of a performative and campus-based politics of everyday life — a harbinger, if you will, of the paradoxically vanguardist politics of today’s campus left; and, ultimately, a politics that is highly compatible with neoliberal managerialism. Early in the episode, she says: …when you have this very elite group of students who see themselves as extremely important and their colleagues in the media are also striking against these traditionalists, the gaullists, the rightwing, and the fascists, the transformation of everyday life gets elevated to the height of Hegelian world historical significance Listeners should definitely check that full show. As Liu says, while its a good thing for ordinary people to become aware of their political agency, its bad when people don’t see that agency in connection to the material and social relations of their lives. But I think what listeners might find interesting about this episode is that,

To kick off "Season 4", we look at a fairly big name from across the pond: Florence + The Machine. Joining our recent lineup of dynamic female singer/songwriters, Florence Welch (with her expansive melodies and enchanting lyrics) appears to bring it home once more with the vastly-titled How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. (Just how big and how beautiful remains to be seen.) So go ahead, join in the analysis, and field your opinions in the comment board! Afterwards, stick around for a hefty discussion on the fairness of lyrical criticism. Have you ever seen a gem of a lyric fly under the radar? Or an overrated lyric reach Pulitzer acclaim? We'll be exploring the possibility of a double standard in the critical approaches to lyrical verse vs. standalone prose today on the Crash Chords Podcast! Continue reading

It's over an hour long because we literally had sooooo much to talk, but its a lot of entertaining talk. Our special guest this episode is Tuck (@TuckNYC), who's currently working on his album Saturday and is just a jack of all trades. Hear us talk about the first time we've ever seen a boob in real life. We also run through the recent releases from Florence + The Machine ("How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful"), Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment ("SURF"), and Dom Kennedy ("By Dom Kennedy"). XXL Magazine revealed their freshman cover this week and we touch on each artist and their possibility for being a major breakout star and the omissions of Young Thug, PartyNextDoor, Makkonen & more. We cap off with a discussion on independent artists who are still on the rise and tips to reach the next level. It's a great, full podcast. Enjoy. Gregory Orr The Blessing: Poetry as Survival Join Michael Lerner in conversation with Gregory Orr, considered by many to be a master of short, lyric free verse. Much of his early work is concerned with seminal events from his childhood, including a hunting accident when he was twelve in which he accidentally shot and killed his younger brother, followed shortly by his mother’s unexpected death, and his father’s later addiction to amphetamines. WARNING: Because of the subject matter, listeners should be prepared for what is, to some, emotionally difficult content. Gregory Orr Gregory was born in 1947 in Albany, New York, and grew up in the rural Hudson Valley. He is the author of nine collections of poetry, including How Beautiful the Beloved (Copper Canyon Press, 2009); Concerning the Book that is the Body of the Beloved (2005); The Caged Owl: New and Selected Poems (2002); Orpheus and Eurydice (2001); Burning the Empty Nests (1997); City of Salt (1995), which was a finalist for the L.A. Times Poetry Prize; and Gathering the Bones Together (1975). He is also the author of a memoir, The Blessing (Council Oak Books, 2002), which was chosen by Publisher’s Weekly as one of the fifty best non-fiction books the year, and three books of essays, including Poetry As Survival (2002) and Stanley Kunitz: An Introduction to the Poetry (1985). Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the politician Baroness Williams of Crosby. Shirley Williams has spent her life immersed in politics. Her father was a Labour Party activist and her mother the writer and pacifist Vera Brittain. Their home was always filled with topical conversation, from the rise of Hitler to the Spanish Civil War. She became a Labour Party member when still a teenager and, after a chance encounter in an air-raid shelter, formed a friendship with the then Home Secretary Herbert Morrison. She enjoyed a career within the Labour Party but, dismayed by its drift to the left, she abandoned it to become one of the Gang of Four who set up the Social Democratic Party in 1981 and later supported its merger with the Liberal Party. Now, as the Liberal Democrats are in the midst of leadership elections, she reflects on the difficulties the party has faced in recent months, and what it must do to regain public support.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: How Beautiful are the Feet by George Frideric Handel Book: Collection by W H Auden Luxury: PC linked to the internet
