It's the end of the world as we know it, and the living envy the dead. The threads of civilization are destroyed in a nuclear war, and Britain is thrust into a new dark age. And we don't even get to have any of the fun stuff like barbarians on motorcycles. Starring Karen Meagher, Reece Dinsdale, Steve Halliwell, and Jane Hazelgrove. Written by Barry Hines. Directed by Mick Jackson.
We are happy to be able to squeeze one more episode into the month of March as we slowly rebuild our programming. Think of this episode as a delayed Valentine— an episode we could've and should've been able to bring to you back in February. This quirky surrealist fairytale about finding love in the back drop of Los Angeles was directed by Mick Jackson, who co-wrote the screenplay with the very funny and multi-talented Steve Martin. While it doesn't have a cast of thousands it does feature great performances from many familiar favorites from both the big and small screen—and supporting appearances by Richard E. Grant, and Sarah Jessica Parker (before Sex and the City fame) absolutely make this film bubble with humor and warmth. Patrick Stewart turns in a hilarious cameo as well. We welcome back former guest and self-proclaimed “non-fluffy man” Rick Tetrault for this episode. This clever, odd, and sophisticated little film is the perfect antidote for the same old Hollywood RomCom rehash. We think you will love it.
We're celebrating 100 episodes this week by returning to not one but two recurring themes from nearly two years of the podcast: the filmography of Steve Martin and the belief that February belongs to romance -- two concepts that combine decently well with some magical realism in our movie of the week, an absurdist take on life and love in Los Angeles that still feels like a cutting send-up of the city more than 30 years later. It's 1991's L.A. Story, directed by Mick Jackson, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin, Victoria Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kevin Pollak, Patrick Stewart, Frances Fisher, Iman, Larry Miller, Woody Harrelson, Rick Moranis and John Lithgow. So tonally cartoonish that it feels Martin is moments away from being crushed by a grand piano and popping out the top of it unscathed at any moment, that silliness conceals an earnest goodness about love, the universe, and everything finding a way to work out as it should. Are these beliefs that go hand-in-hand with the movie's wacky exterior, or does the film find itself at odds with itself? Find out, as we dive into a movie Hayley recently picked up on VHS. Plus: J Mo's still sore from having climbed into the wrestling ring over the weekend! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, L.A. Story is currently streaming for free on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include the video games Mario & Luigi: Brothership and Balatro, as well as TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Only The Brave, 24, The Departed, The Nice Guys, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Jurassic Park, the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy, the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy, A Goofy Movie, Bowfinger, The Lonely Guy, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Tooth Fairy and They Came Together. Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues next week as we run it back for another 100 episodes beginning with Nicolas Cage and Cher in 1987's Moonstruck, which may be the most readily available film we've ever covered as it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla as we release this. Thank you so much for listening for 100 episodes, or however long you've been on the ride. We love you, and see you at the movies!!

"Our lives are woven together in a fabric, but the connections that make society strong also make it vulnerable."—Threads (1984) For the 18th TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Antony Rotunno, Frank Johnson and Mark Campbell for another of our four-way discussions, this time on the disturbing (because uncomfortably realistic) nuclear-apocalyptic BBC/Nine Network (Australia) film Threads from 1984. Written by Barry Hines ("A Kestral for a Knave", 1968 / "Kes", 1969) and directed by Mick Jackson ("The Bodyguard", 1992), Threads is a merciless exploration—supported by considerable scientific and government policy research—of the devastating physical, psychological and societal effects of thermonuclear war. Set in the UK city of Sheffield during a period of spiralling tensions between the United States of America and the former Soviet Union, Threads takes the viewer on a uniquely challenging journey: from kitchen sink drama to pseudo-documentary, as we witness the lives of everyday people (just like ourselves) being destroyed, or changed forever, by the blast, heat and radiation of a thermonuclear event. (Please be warned: Threads is a disturbing film—it's supposed to be—but it's also a very important film, which I think as many people (adults) as possible should see. But, again, please do be prepared to watch something that might affect you deeply.) Join us as we discuss the production and consider its message during this period of rising international tensions in the world today. [For show notes please visit https://themindrenewed.com]
Forty years ago, director Mick Jackson released a film titled “Threads” that's been called the scariest movie ever made. But rather than featuring ghosts and monsters, it realistically and disturbingly portrays what would happen in the event of a nuclear apocalypse. Mick joins guest host Talia Schlanger to discuss the film's legacy, why he wanted to scare his audience with the truth, and how he went on to direct one of the biggest romances in movie history: Whitney Houston's “The Bodyguard.”
Welcome back, Lookers! In this bite-sized edition of Look Behind The Look, we dive into the iconic 90s film, The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. From Whitney's unforgettable performance of "I Will Always Love You" to the behind-the-scenes magic, this episode is packed with nostalgia and fascinating insights.I had the honor of speaking with Academy Award-winning makeup artist Valli O'Reilly, who shared her journey of becoming Whitney's makeup artist for the film. Valli reveals the products she used, the makeup tests they performed, and even shares some treasured items from the set that she's kept for over 30 years.Discover the story behind Whitney's "glamorously natural" look, the iconic red lipstick, and the makeup techniques that brought her character, Rachel Maron, to life. Valli's anecdotes and expert tips will transport you back to the film's production and highlight the artistry involved in creating such an enduring look.Let's also delve into the creation of the film's costumes, particularly the stunning Queen of the Night outfit. We found Susan Niniger's inspiration, which drew from Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Thierry Mugler's designs, and reflects on her collaboration with Whitney and the film's director, Mick Jackson.Join us as we celebrate Whitney Houston's legacy, explore the creative forces behind The Bodyguard, and reminisce about the moments that made this film a timeless classic.

She is the wife of Mick Jackson, bass player who played with the band Love Affair during London's swinging '60s. For three years, the group were more popular in Britain as The Beatles. Their number one hit was "Everlasting Love" - later featured in Kenneth Branagh's 2021 film, "Belfast". Jackson will reveal moments of chaos when the boys were arrested and jailed after climbing Eros or shocking the nation by exposing the music industry's biggest ever cover-up. Steve Martin apparently worked on the script for L.A. STORY for seven years before he and director Mick Jackson brought this romantic fantasy comedy to the big screen in 1991. Martin plays Harris K. Telemacher, a depressed weather presenter, trapped in an unfulfilling relationship with his socialite girlfriend and disheartened by the superficiality of the Los Angeles scene. After being dumped by his girlfriend and receiving cryptic relationship advice from a freeway sign he begins to fall for Sara, an English journalist - from London of course - writing an article about Los Angeles for the London Times. With that relationship complicated by Sara's pledge to reconcile with her ex-husband (Richard E Grant), Telemacher begins dating SanDeE* (Sarah Jessica Parker), a ditzy clothing store assistant and only an improbable weather based emergency will ensure the smooth running of the course of true love.Witty and full of eccentricity, time has not been kind to some of the romantic elements of the story but the sharp, fast-paced comedy still remains entertaining and amusing.
From director Mick Jackson and writer Lawrence Kasdan comes the harrowing tale of an R&B singer caught in the crosshairs of an assassin and the ex-secret service agent tasked with keeping her safe. Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) is on the cusp of an academy award, but unbeknownst to her, a stalker is sending her threatening messages. Her management decides to call in the best man for the job: Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner). Frank's no-nonsense and cautious nature quickly clashes with Rachel's free-wheeling and fancy-free lifestyle, but they'll have to overcome their differences if she wants to survive.

In Mick Jackson's TV film Temple Grandin, Claire Danes shines in the title role, portraying one of the world's most famous autistic women. Temple is shown to be a formidable force of nature as she takes on the professors of her college, and the workers of the feedlot where she will eventually design her famous cattle chute system. We discuss how the film makes use of animation techniques to offer a visualisation of Temple's way of 'thinking in pictures', although we reserve concerns that this may essentialise autism a little too much. We consider Temple in relation to her gender as a strong female character in many very masculine environments, and what impression this leaves us for thinking through autistic femininity. Temple Grandin will be screened on the 16th September at our Autism and Cinema season at the Barbican, London. The film will be followed by a short pre-recorded interview with the real Temple, and then a Q&A with podcast host Dr David Hartley, and Dr Bonnie Evans, author of The Metamorphosis of Autism. Tickets are free and can be bought from the Barbican website: https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/temple-grandin-pg-screentalk If you have enjoyed this episode, please leave us a comment or feedback, or get in touch on cinemautism[at]gmail.com

The game lacked many of its core promised features when it launched, resulting in heavy fan backlash. Within two years of its rollout, the tide started turning in No Man's Sky's favor, thanks in large part to updates that transformed the experience. NEXT counted as the first of such changes, ushering in multiplayer gameplay options that Hello Games teased in the lead up to launch. This particular update also overhauled the graphics and introduced refined base-building mechanics. Hello Games' efforts didn't stop there either; as such, the redemption arc for No Man's Sky has been rather impressive to watch unfold. With the game now celebrating its fifth year anniversary, Hello Games has put out a short video looking back at all of the updates we've seen so far, along with a tease of what's coming next.9th August 2021 – 25th anniversary of Escape from L.A. - https://movieweb.com/escape-from-la-25th-anniversary/Stylized on-screen as John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. A 1996 American post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter, co-written and produced by Debra Hill and Kurt Russell, with Russell also starring as Snake Plissken. A sequel to Escape from New York, Escape from L.A. co-stars Steve Buscemi, Stacy Keach, Bruce Campbell, and Pam Grier. The film gained a strong cult following. The film was in development for over 10 years. At one point, a script was commissioned in 1987 and was written by screenwriter Coleman Luck, with Dino De Laurentiis's company producing. Carpenter later described the script as "too light, too campy". In time, Carpenter and Kurt Russell got together to write with their long-time collaborator Debra Hill. Carpenter insists that Russell's persistence allowed the film to be made, since "Snake Plissken was a character he loved and wanted to play again." At the beginning of the film, Kurt Russell wears his costume from the original film, which still fits after fifteen years. The film takes place in 2013.10th August 2021 – 60th Anniversary of Operation Ranch Hand, spraying an estimated 20 million US gallons (76,000 m3) of defoliants and herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food and vegetation cover - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ranch_HandOperation Ranch Hand was a U.S. military operation during the Vietnam War, lasting from 1962 until 1971. Largely inspired by the British use of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D (Agent Orange) during the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s, it was part of the overall herbicidal warfare program during the war called "Operation Trail Dust". Ranch Hand involved spraying an estimated 20 million U.S. gallons (76,000 m3) of defoliants and herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food and vegetation cover. Areas of Laos and Cambodia were also sprayed to a lesser extent. Nearly 20,000 sorties were flown between 1961 and 1971. The herbicides were sprayed by the U.S. Air Force flying C-123s using the call sign "Hades". The planes were fitted with specially developed spray tanks with a capacity of 1,000 U.S. gallons (4 m3) of herbicides. A plane sprayed a swath of land that was 80 meters wide and 16 kilometers (10 mi) long in about 4½ minutes, at a rate of about 3 U.S. gallons per acre (3 m3/km2). Sorties usually consisted of three to five aircraft flying side by side. 95% of the herbicides and defoliants used in the war were sprayed by the U.S. Air Force as part of Operation Ranch Hand. The remaining 5% were sprayed by the U.S. Chemical Corps, other military branches, and the Republic of Vietnam using hand sprayers, spray trucks, helicopters and boats, primarily around U.S. military installations. The use of herbicides in the Vietnam War was controversial from the beginning, particularly for crop destruction. The scientific community began to protest the use of herbicides in Vietnam as early as 1964, when the Federation of American Scientists objected to the use of defoliants. In 1967, seventeen Nobel laureates and 5,000 other scientists signed a petition asking for the immediate end to the use of herbicides in Vietnam. According to the Vietnamese government, the US program exposed approximately 4.8 million Vietnamese people to Agent Orange, resulted in 400,000 deaths due to a range of cancers and other ailments. The Vietnamese population has suffered a range of ailments with three million Vietnamese people suffering health problems, one million birth defects caused directly by exposure to Agent Orange, and 24% of the area of Vietnam being defoliated.12th August 2021 – 40th birthday of the IBM 5150 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Personal_Computer#DebutOn August 12, 1981, Don Esteridge, who was unknown at the time, announced the release of the new personal computer created by his company. The head of development at IBM Entry Level Systems presented the 5150, or IBM PC, a concept that would revolutionize the computer industry forever. The machine was based on open architecture and a substantial market of third-party peripherals, expansion cards and software grew up rapidly to support it. The PC had a substantial influence on the personal computer market. The specifications of the IBM PC became one of the most popular computer design standards in the world, and the only significant competition it faced from a non-compatible platform throughout the 1980s was from the Apple Macintosh product line. The majority of modern personal computers are distant descendants of the IBM PC.Pricing started at $1,565 for a configuration with 16K RAM, Color Graphics Adapter, and no disk drives. The price was designed to compete with comparable machines in the market. For comparison, the Datamaster, announced two weeks earlier as IBM's least expensive computer, cost $10,000. IBM's marketing campaign licensed the likeness of Charlie Chaplin's character "The Little Tramp" for a series of advertisements based on Chaplin's movies, played by Billy Scudder. The PC was IBM's first attempt to sell a computer through retail channels rather than directly to customers. Reception was overwhelmingly positive, with sales estimates from analysts suggesting billions of dollars in sales over the next few years, and the IBM PC immediately became the talk of the entire computing industry. Dealers were overwhelmed with orders, including customers offering pre-payment for machines with no guaranteed delivery date. By the time the machine was shipping, the term "PC" was becoming a household name.Remembrances10th August 2010 - David L. Wolper - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_L._WolperAmerican television and film producer, responsible for shows such as Roots, The Thorn Birds, North and South, L.A. Confidential, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). He was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 57th Academy Awards in 1985 for his work producing the opening and closing ceremonies of the XXIIIrd Olympiad, Los Angeles 1984 as well as helping to bring the games to L.A. His 1971 film (as executive producer) about the study of insects, The Hellstrom Chronicle, won an Academy Award. On March 13, 1974, one of his crews filming a National Geographic history of Australopithecus at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area was killed when their Sierra Pacific Airlines Corvair 440 slammed into the White Mountains shortly after takeoff from Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop, California, killing all 35 on board, including 31 Wolper crew members. The filmed segment was recovered in the wreckage and was broadcast in the television series Primal Man. The cause of the crash remains unsolved. In 1988, Wolper was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. For his work on television, he had received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died from congestive heart disease and complications of Parkinson's disease at the age of 82 in Beverly Hills, California.Famous Birthdays10th August 1889 – Charles Darrow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_DarrowAmerican who modified the design of Lizzie Magie's original invention The Landlord's Game. He became the first millionaire game designer in history, and although Magie patented her invention she received only $500. Parker Brothers falsely credited Darrow as the original inventor. While Darrow eventually sold his version of Monopoly to Parker Brothers, claiming it to be his own invention, modern historians credit Darrow as just one of the game's final developers. Monopoly is a board game which focuses on the acquisition of fictional real estate titles, with the incorporation of elements of chance. After losing his job at a sales company following the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Darrow worked at various odd jobs. Seeing his neighbors and acquaintances play a board game in which the object was to buy and sell property, he decided to publish his own version of the game, with the help of his first son, William, and his wife Esther. Darrow marketed his version of the game under the name Monopoly. In truth, Darrow was just one of many people in the American Midwest and East Coast who had been playing a game of buying and trading property. The game's direct ancestor was The Landlord's Game, created by Elizabeth Magie. The Darrow family initially made their game sets on flexible, round pieces of oilcloth instead of rigid, square carton. Charles drew the designs of the properties with drafting pens, and his son and wife filled in the spaces with colors and made the title deed cards and Chance and Community Chest cards. In 1970, three years after Darrow's death, Atlantic City placed a commemorative plaque in his honor on The Boardwalk, near the corner of Park Place. In 1973 Ralph Anspach, an economics professor at San Francisco State University, produced Anti-Monopoly, a game similar to Monopoly, and for this was sued by Parker Brothers. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Events of Interest10th August 1960 – Dinosaurus! was released - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053768/ On this day in 1960, it was 'Jurassic Park' all over again with the release of Dinosaurus! The feature starred Ward Ramsey and Kristina Hanson, and here's the plot summary: "After undersea explosions near a Caribbean island, prehistoric creatures are unleashed on the unsuspecting population. Freed from his watery tomb, as well, is a very friendly Neanderthal man who proceeds to befriend a local orphan boy. The boy, Neanderthal and irritated dinosaur make for an interesting dramatic climax." The leading role was intended for Steve McQueen, who starred in The Blob two years earlier, also produced by Harris and directed by Yeaworth. McQueen passed on the film to make The Magnificent Seven instead. The dinosaurs were filmed using the technique of stop-motion animation as well as puppets for close-ups. The film promulgates the naïve idea that herbivorous animals (such as the brontosaurus) are not dangerous (a similar claim was made in Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park', 1993). The cape buffalo is one of the most aggressive and dangerous animals in Africa (and only weighs about 5% of what a brontosaurus is estimated to have weighed). Marcel Delgado was given less than half the time originally agreed upon to create the dinosaur models used in the film. The studio initially agreed to give him five to six weeks, as he requested, but two weeks later he was told that they would begin production on Tuesday. When Betty is captured by the neanderthal and taken to his cave, she's wearing a white dress and a pearl necklace. Combined with her red hair, she bears a striking resemblance to Wilma Flintstone, one of the stars of the TV cartoon series "The Flintstones" (1960), which would debut on American television one month after this movies US release (coincidentally, Betty is the name of Wilma's best friend).10th August 1990 – The Magellan space probe reaches Venus. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magellan_(spacecraft)#Orbital_encounter_of_Venus On August 10, 1990, the American Magellan probe, named after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, arrived at its orbit around the planet and started a mission of detailed radar mapping at a frequency of 2.38 GHz. It began the orbital insertion maneuver which placed the spacecraft into a three-hour, nine minute, elliptical orbit that brought the spacecraft 295-kilometers from the surface at about 10 degrees North during the periapsis and out to 7762-kilometers during apoapsis. During each orbit, the space probe captured radar data while the spacecraft was closest to the surface, and then transmit it back to Earth as it moved away from Venus. This maneuver required extensive use of the reaction wheels to rotate the spacecraft as it imaged the surface for 37-minutes and as it pointed toward Earth for two hours. The primary mission intended for the spacecraft to return images of at least 70 percent of the surface during one Venusian day, which lasts 243 Earth days as the planet slowly spins. To avoid overly-redundant data at the highest and lowest latitudes, the Magellan probe alternated between a Northern-swath, a region designated as 90 degrees north latitude to 54 degrees south latitude, and a Southern-swath, designated as 76 degrees north latitude to 68 degrees south latitude. However, due to periapsis being 10 degrees north of the equatorial line, imaging the South Pole region was unlikely. The resulting maps were comparable to visible-light photographs of other planets, and are still the most detailed in existence. Magellan greatly improved scientific understanding of the geology of Venus: the probe found no signs of plate tectonics, but the scarcity of impact craters suggested the surface was relatively young, and there were lava channels thousands of kilometers long.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's just another day in Sheffield, everyone going about their own affairs, when suddenly the unthinkable happens - a nuclear strike. When the survivors scrabble out of the rubble, that is just the beginning of a waking nightmare, as modern society quickly crumbles into starvation and suffering. The BBC2 TV play Threads was a television landmark that is still as powerful today as it was in 1982. Written by Barry (Kes) Hines and directed by Mick Jackson before he went to Hollywood, it is a polemic, extensively researched attempt to depict the true horror of life after a nuclear conflict. Joining Gareth Preston to discuss this memorable production are author Rik Hoskin and lecturer Andrew Roe-Crines. I phoned Mick Jackson in LA to discuss THREADS. We also talked about A Guide To Armageddon, and The Day After, plus liquorice and all manner of nuclear horror. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dr. Mick Jackson is the Founder of WildHearts, which works with business and channels its profits back into projects that help humankind. His life-changing moment (and the reason he set up WildHearts) came after a harrowing adventure that involved carrying his dying sherpa for four days after his lungs collapsed while climbing Broad Peak and K2. Betsy and Mick talk about getting comfortable with discomfort, how travel helps us to see the world through the perspective of others, how anyone can be an entrepreneur, and how he's had to pivot his business model and successful MicroTyco programme- and created unexpected impact - as a result of Covid-19 lockdowns. Gabe and Now Playing Network head honcho Jim Laczkowski – who you may remember from Director’s Club Podcast and Voices & Visions, among others – take a deep dive into the soul-crushing world of Nuclear Panic Movies. Again, this subject is too broad for a single podcast, so we’ve broken the discussion down to a series of movies released at the height of ‘80s Cold War paranoia between 1983 and 1988. Jim sets the stage by filling Gabe in on a couple ‘60s entries – Fredric Gadette’s This is Not a Test (1962) and Ray Milland Panic in Year Zero! (1962) – then they dig in, like atomic radiation tearing its way through flesh, bone, and marrow. Subject matter includes Nicholas Meyer’s The Day After (1983), Mick Jackson’s Threads (1984), Lynne Littman’s Testament (1983, #52FilmsByWomen), Edward Zwick’s Special Bulletin(1983), Fred Barzyk’s Countdown to Looking Glass (1984), Mori Masaki’s Barefoot Gen (1983; Gabe also quickly discusses the legacy of Hiroshima/Nagasaki-themed movies), Jimmy T. Murakami’s When the Wind Blows (1986), Steve De Jarnatt’s Miracle Mile (1988), and John Duigan’s One Night Stand (1984). Gabe closes things out with a quick mention of Konstantin Lopushansky’s Dead Man’s Letters (1986), which is otherwise dense enough to fill an entire podcast on its own. Follow along with this handy Letterboxd list (ranked by release date): https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/nuclear-panic-movies-of-the-80s/ Tune in next month when Gabe and Tracks of the Damned’s Patrick Ripoll cram every single slasher movie released in the year 1981. Fun fact: While Shazam! was shooting in Toronto last year, screenwriter Henry Gayden dropped by the studio late one night to talk about the eccentric, romantic miracle that is Steve Martin and Mick Jackson’s 1991 comedy L.A. Story. Your genial host Norm Wilner has the complete works of John Lillison right there on the coffee table.
Si 2019 est l'année de l'apocalypse, ce n'est pas à cause du prélèvement à la source (encore que), mais grâce au génie de Sergio Martino, réalisateur de 2019 après la chute de New York. Despite decades of censorship and neglect, Peter Watkins (http://pwatkins.mnsi.net/) has created a body of work that marks him out as one of the UK’s greatest filmmakers. Born in Surrey in 1935, Watkins began his career pioneering the ‘docu-drama’ in two works for the BBC: historical drama Culloden (1964) about the final battle in the Jacobite rebellion, and The War Game (1965), speculating about a nuclear attack on the UK. The BBC refused to broadcast the latter, and after his feature film Privilege (1968) had a poor commercial and critical reception, Watkins spent the rest of his career in exile. In his theoretical writing, teaching and filmmaking, Watkins has challenged the ‘monoform’ – a standardisation of Mass Audio-Visual Media that barrages its audience with a rapid flow of changing images and sounds, with the intention of preventing any real contemplation. Joining Juliet to discuss Watkins' work is Gareth Evans, former editor of Vertigo magazine and adjunct Moving Image Curator at Whitechapel Gallery. This week we are joined by cold war civil defence expert Dr. Jacquelyn Arnold for her chosen subject of post-nuclear war survival. First up is L. Q. Jones’ adaptation of Harlan Ellison’s story A Boy and His Dog (1974) with its questionable morality and misogyny but likely realism. Then… deep breath… the most harrowing film ever made? Mick Jackson’s Threads (1984) (SPOILERS) is an almost fatal dose of realism in the face of the nuclear apocalypse. Watch it with a friend. We finish with Z for Zachariah (2015) love triangle between Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine, deviating from the sinister abusive dynamic of the original book. (SPOILERS for both the film and the book). Also, SPOILERS for The Book of Eli (2010)Also: Baby Don Johnson. Fallout the movie. Psychic dogs. We Happy Few. Over the hill. The Prisoner (1967). Balls the size of watermelons. BioShock. FIlms more depressing than Threads: When the Wind Blows (1986), Testament (1983). BIKINI state. On the Beach (1959). Die alone in a hole. Protect & Survive. Cars (2006) and Bagpuss (1974). A girl and her dog. Religion versus Science. Candles, how do they work? RadAway. We play a game of “Apocalypse Wow!”

We're back to our regularly scheduled programming this week on Nic, Tys and Videotape, and what better way to get back into the swing of things than to spend some time with the Queen of the Night herself, as we chat the box-office juggernaut of 1992, THE BODYGUARD!! Whitney Houston may always love you, but we hated this week's film, the Bodyguard. Find out why in our latest episode, where Samuel Spencer and Sam Cleal also discuss why Kevin Costner is the corrugated cardboard of people, why Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been great casting, and how this film is secretly a Jungle Book origins story. The Bodyguard was directed by Mick Jackson and stars Whitney Houston, Kevin Costner, Gary Kemp and, for some reason, Debbie Reynolds.
Director Jeremy Kagan discusses his new film, Shot, with fellow Director Mick Jackson. The drama follows the immediate aftermath of a shooting as the victim, his wife and the emergency medical personnel fight for his life in the critical first hour. The film simultaneously shows the experiences of the teen shooter as he tries to avoid the consequences of his actions.

Two very different movies - one a historical drama directed by Mick Jackson of the David Irving libel case, and Nacho Vigalondo's curious horror rom-com Colossal - that feel very close to home today. Rachel Weisz plays Deborah Lipstadt, a Holocaust historian who is sued in London by David Irving (Timothy Spall) for identifying him as a denier of the genocide of Jewish people in German concentration camps. Denial also stars Andrew Scott and Tom Wilkinson and has a great deal of resonance to current events given its focus on freedom of speech and the abuse of same. Colossal is an original and inventive picture by Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo that stretches from South Korea to rural America. This international production mashes up Kaiju monsters with the tropes of Hollywood romantic comedy and then serves up something genuinely startling. While this vehicle of Anne Hathaway has been described as a metaphor for addiction, there is far more at work here. Stevie and Emmet dance around potential spoilers while trying to sketch out exactly why you should see this curious and powerful film. Also Emmet tries to suggest a tagline for the film 'The personal is Colossal.'
In this episode our hosts Fiona Williams and Nick Bhasin talk about the recent Netflix stand-up specials featuring Dave Chappelle and Louis CK, they interview Denial director Mick Jackson, and discuss their experiences with Downfall being coloured by the popular Downfall memes.

Director Mick Jackson discusses his new film, Denial, with Jeremy Kagan. Based on the book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, the film follows Deborah Lipstadt's court battle against David Irving, who sues her for libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier.

Next on our list of franchises is Steven Spielberg's ‘Indiana Jones' films. We discuss adventure, racism, postcolonial revisionist history, and why we like action heroes to be competent enough to succeed — but only just. This Week's Watching: THE HUNTED (2003): William Friedkin, Tommy Lee Jones, Benicio del Toro LA RUE CASES-NÈGRES (1983): Euzhan Palcy, Garry Cadenat, Darling Légitimus Recommendations: THE BODYGUARD (1992): Mick Jackson, Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston SCROOGED (1988): Richard Donner, Bill Murray, Karen Allen ROMANCING THE STONE (1984): Robert Zemeckis, Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner HOT FUZZ (2007): Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost (Incidentally, 5 out 18 directors and principal actors is the highest proportion of women we've had, since I've been listing recs here. 28%. Gender representation in the film industry is rubbish…)
In this week's episode, the gang sits down with WHM Disaster Movie Expert, JJ Case, to discuss the Tommy Lee Jones 'splosion fest, Volcano! How much scrabbled eggs does Tommy Lee Jones need? Why was the Hard Rock Cafe so popular in the 90s? And is there really such thing as a rock star seismologist? Plus: Los Angeles needs a John Carroll Lynch lava statue. Volcano stars Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Heche, Gaby Hoffman, Don Cheadle and John Carroll Lynch; directed by Mick Jackson. Find JJ Case's write-ups as well as all the other t.v. recaps over at Recap THIS.
