Today's episode features Devon Delmar, Jason Jacobs, and their feature film, “Carissa”, which just enjoyed its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for the Venice Horizon's Award for Best Film. They are also joined by Producer Deidré Jantjies. Past inspirations include Benh Zeitlin's 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'. The conversation delves into themes of community, cultural representation, and the challenges of storytelling on a tight budget. The filmmakers discuss their collaboration and process of crafting character arcs that reflect relatable struggles, all while navigating the complexities of cultural sensitivity. They reflect on the impact of their choices and the significance of casting non-actors to enhance realism. The discussion also touches on their unique editing process, the emotional connections that drive their storytelling, and how magical realism allows for deeper exploration of themes. What Movies Are You Watching?Like, subscribe and follow us on our socials @pastpresentfeature
Today we're joined by our friend, the mega-talented and ever-thoughtful Benh Zeitlin, director of Glory at Sea, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Wendy. We're thrilled to welcome Benh to the study group as we cross the threshold on pages 31-32, and see Muldrow's journey plummet into action. From here, we break down act breaks, specifically the crucial transition from Act 1 to Act 2. We discuss the confluence of plot and emotional undercurrents in a story, and how the Coens use structure to build striking and surprising narratives. Thanks again to Benh for joining us on this rollicking river ride. Coens covered: Miller's Crossing, Fargo, Intolerable Cruelty, A Serious Man. Team Vintage Sand returns to the airwaves with our October episode, a neat bookend to Episode 31 wherein we explored our favorite final films by great directors. Here we present Episode 41--Gala Premieres: Our Favorite First Films by Great Directors. To begin, we decided to establish some parameters to spare you, our tenacious audience, any pointless discussion.. The first is that we tried to avoid directors about whom we have already discoursed at great length in these pages. The second, what we termed the Julie Dash Rule, is that we would only focus on first films by directors who went on to long and predominantly successful careers in feature films. That's why you won't find movies like "Boys Don't Cry"(Kim Pierce), "One False Move" (Carl Franklin), "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (Benh Zeitlin) or one-hit-wonders like Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" or Loden's "Wanda" here. Plus, we already did a full episode on one-hit wonders—that would be Episode 10. (The fact that the brilliant Dash has only been able to make one film in three decades is a mystery to be explored in another episode or two—utterly inexplicable). Our last rule is the Rosebud Rule; we tried to exclude any first films that were too obvious to spend time on. That would include "Citizen Kane", "The Maltese Falcon", "The 400 Blows", "Breathless", "Badlands", "Boyz ‘n' the Hood", "Reservoir Dogs" and similar fare all the way through "Get Out". So join us as we bring back those wonderful moments where you wandered into a film by a new director and left the theater realizing that you had just witnessed the birth of a new voice to be reckoned with.
It is February of 2020 and after 8 long years director Benh Zeitlin, known for Beasts of the Southern Wild, is releasing his greatly anticipated next movie. What could go wrong? Uh oh. Looks like a little GLOBAL PANDEMIC has driven people inside away from theaters and this indie film is all but forgotten. But should it be? The Hello From Obscurity gang takes a closer look at this indie movie. A modern retelling of Peter Pan, but this time from Wendy's perspective. Is this reimagined fairy tale worth remembering? Or is it doomed to stay forever in Neverland?

Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in the Bathtub. It was an indie darling that went all the way to a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Benh Zeitlin's debut feature, set loosely in the New Orleans south around the hurricane, really has its beating heart in 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, the sweet, moral, defiant Hushpuppy.
Directed by Benh Zeitlin and released in 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of a young girl named Hushpuppy and her dad Wink. Residing south of New Orleans in a community called the Bathtub, their way of life is threatened by an incoming storm, sending the residents on an odyssey and a fight for survival. Inspiring audiences since its release, it's a unique, hopeful, yet cautionary tale of the modern age.
Acht Jahre nach "Beasts of the Southern Wild" veröffentlicht Benh Zeitlin seinen zweiten Kinofilm.

Sam talks to writer & director Benh Zeitlin about his new film, Wendy. The classic story of Peter Pan is wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic from Benh Zeitlin, director of BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.
In episode 24 of the Fade To Black podcast, critics Amon Warmann, Clarisse Loughrey and Hanna Flint review Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds (20:45), Benh Zeitlin's Wendy (33:08), and Sundance winner CODA (1:07:12). For our ‘Hot Take' (01:23:44), we chat Q&A etiquette – when is a question really more of a comment? Plus, Hanna talks to Allan “Seapa” Mustafa and Hugo Chegwin, AKA MC Grindah and DJ Beats about People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (06:54) - the big screen adaptation of the BBC comedy series which we'll be reviewing next week - and Amon speaks to CODA director Siân Heder about deaf representation on film (49:30). Ali and Robbie's guest this week is Ryan Reynolds, who talks about his role as a bank cashier who discovers that he's actually inside a brutal, open world video game in Free Guy. Robbie and Ali also review Benedict Cumberbatch in The Courier, about Cold War spy Greville Wynne trying to put an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis; Coda, about Ruby, who is the only hearing person in her deaf family; Beasts of the Southern Wild director Benh Zeitlin's film Wendy, a reimagining of Peter Pan; Minamata, which stars Johnny Depp as war photographer W. Eugene Smith who travels back to Japan where he documents the devastating effect of mercury poisoning in coastal communities; WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn, Jed Rothstein's documentary about the collapse of the office space company; and Dan Stevens in I'm Your Man, about a scientist who in order to obtain research funds for her studies, accepts an offer to participate in an extraordinary experiment. What's That Film continues, in which your mysterious half-remembered films are (hopefully) identified. Ali and Robbie also talk you through the best and worst films on subscription-free TV next week, and recommend a home entertainment purchase in DVD of the Week. In a jam-packed episode of the Fade To Black podcast, critics Amon Warmann, Clarisse Loughrey and Hanna Flint review four new releases; Stillwater starring Matt Damon (28:48), Janicza Bravo's Zola (38:49), Jojo Moyes adaptation The Last Letter From Your Lover (50:41), and Lin-Manuel Miranda's animated spectacular Vivo (01:21:27). For our ‘Hot Take' (01:31:03), we discuss the shift Hollywood has made from building up movie stars to building up characters and IP's. How does the traditional movie star even conceivably exist in an era where social media has made us demand absolute authenticity & accessibility from the people we admire? Plus, we've got not one, not two, not four, but three interviewees this week! Hanna chats with Benh Zeitlin (06:55) about his Peter Pan adaptation Wendy which we'll be reviewing next week, and Amon chats with Vivo director Kirk Demicco and Vivo screenwriter Quiara Alegría Hudes (1:04:14).

The International Film Festival offers a wide range of delights, but often the best ones are the films that shine a new light on a story we thought we already knew well enough. One of the most intriguing films at the International Film Festival is called Wendy. Yes, it's a re-imagining of J M Barrie's old favourite Peter Pan, but it's like nothing you've seen since Beasts of the Southern Wild about eight years ago. Like that extraordinary film, it's shot on location with very young children, and more than a hint of magic. Simon Morris talks to the director of both films, Benh Zeitlin.
In this episode, our team of global contributors are joined by Paul Anderson (host of Strangers In A Cinema) as they discuss the extravagant hilarity of Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ Netflix Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, why Olivier Assayas’ disappointing Wasp Network (starring Ana De Armas and Penelope Cruz) issues as a feature film, the perplexing and embarrassing failure of Blumhouse’s You Should Have Left (starring Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried), as well as diving into Benh Zeitlin’s underseen indie film Wendy and discussing why it deserves a critical reappraisal. || 00:00 - Introduction 00:45 - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga 26:17 - Wasp Network | 56:25 - You Should Have Left | 81:07 - Overlooked Indie Films #1: Wendy | 119:53: - CLAPPER’s weekly recommendations. || Produced by Diego Andaluz. This week, I spoke to the brilliant Anna Bertmark. Anna is a sound designer and supervisor who has worked on several acclaimed and award-winning British feature films including God’s Own Country, The Goob, Adult Life Skills, Lilting, You Were Never Really Here and more recently Blue Story, as well as episodes of Normal People as a sound effects editor. I should also mention that Anna won the Best Sound BIFA in 2017 for her work on Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country and if you haven’t seen that film it’s a true marvel and definitely something worth seeking out. Originally from Sweden, Anna has worked in the UK film industry for 15 years and been Vice Chair of The Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS). She’s passionate about mentorship and training, so we speak her experiences of that and how she’s providing that currently to up-and-coming sound professionals. We also talk about her approach to designing sound, what those initial conversations with a director look like, where she gets inspiration, how software has changed over the years and what motivates her. Personally I think it’s a great chat and my first with a sound designer so there was lots for me learn. If you’re a sound designer or interested in it as a career I’m going to flag a couple of things you might find valuable. One is a documentary called Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound by Midge Costin who herself has extensive experience in the sound department and its a great introduction to both the history of sound, but also how valuable it is as a storytelling apparatus. Secondly, next week on Friday 26 June, the Sundance Institute and their Collab offshoot are hosting a webinar with Alma Har’el who directed Honey Boy and Benh Zeitlin who directed Beasts of the Southern Wild all about sound design and the role it can play and how to make the most of it even with lower budget features. I’ve been watching quite a few of their talks and they are really really good and this sounds like it’s gonna be pretty fascinating, so yeah one to bookmark. And finally, Anna recommended a book she was reading called 'Women in Audio' by Leslie Gaston-Bird and it features almost 100 profiles and stories of women working in various audio fields including sound for film & TV, so give that Google.

I became a fan of Benh Zeitlin after his first film "Beasts of the Southern Wild." Now almost eight years later he has a second film that once again captures the wonder of childhood through a young girl's eyes. For "Wendy" he has reimagined "Peter Pan" from her point of view and place the idea of motherhood front and center. I speak to him about shooting on 16mm, working with non-professional child actors, and keeping reality as part of the magical world he creates.

Writer/Director Benh Zeitlin speaks to moderator Gregory Ellwood (The Playlist) about his new film WENDY, the seven-years-in-the-making follow-up to his acclaimed 2012 feature BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. This conversation was recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 2/29/20. The classic story of Peter Pan is wildly reimagined in this ragtag epic from Benh Zeitlin, director of Beasts of the Southern Wild. Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy (Devin France) must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.
Benh Zeitlin made his feature filmmaking debut 8 years ago with the indie sensation "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," which earned four Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Since then, he's been hard at work on his follow up film "Wendy," which is a modern and grounded re-telling of the legend of Peter Pan from the perspective of the character Wendy. Benh was kind enough to talk us through his process of filmmaking, casting the child actors, why it took so long for his sophomore film and more! Chicago area film critics Chuck Koplinski and Pamela Powell review three current films and give you a sneak peek at an interview with "Wendy" co-writer and director Benh Zeitlin in this week's podcast.
WENDY MOVIE REVIEW Has it really been since 2012 that director Benh Zeitlin burst onto the scene with his first film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, a film that surprised everyone by getting three Oscar noms including Best Picture? I understand there might have been some question of ‘how the hell do you follow an… Read More »Highly Suspect Reviews: Wendy

We had the privilege of sitting down with writer, director, composer, and all around good guy, Benh Zeitlin, to discuss his upcoming film Wendy, a unique revisionist retelling of Peter Pan as seen through the eyes of the titular Wendy. It’s loaded with magical realism, naturalistic wonder, and adventure, but it was a long, arduous seven year journey to get it completed. Needless to say, there was plenty to talk about! Join us as we talk with Benh about Wendy’s creative process, production challenges, visual influence, and much much more!
Wendy Director Benh Zeitlin Talks Adapting The Peter Pan Mythos & MoreFollowing his Oscar nominated debut, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin has spent the last 8 years crafting a very original adaptation of the Peter Pan story we all know and love. He stopped by the podcast to talk about working with young, non-professional actors, building his Neverland in the real world as opposed to a set, why they shifted the story's focus from Peter Pan to Wendy and so much more. Also in this week's show, the guys finally get to discuss the reveal of Robert Pattinson's Batsuit. We touch on where we think the tone of Matt Reeves' new Batman is headed, and the rad idea that his suit's Bat symbol could be made from the proverbial gun that killed his parents. Unfortunately, both Kevin and Sean lost the friendly Oscars wager, granting Jake the power to force them to watch any movie he desired. So this week, they return with painful stories of sitting through the infamous Human Centipede III: Final Sequence. Don't worry, we don't get nearly as graphic as the film, and you can laugh along with Jake throughout. The major release hitting theaters this weekend is The Call of the Wild starring Harrison Ford. Jake and Kevin were both able to see the film, and interview Indiana Jones himself. Be sure to stick around for Jake's amazing story about asking him a "fan question" from one Mark Hamill. It is pure gold. And finally, it wouldn't be an episode of ReelBlend without an awesome BlendGame. We were challenged to chose our favorite movie taglines of all time, and many of you lovely folks played along online using #TaglineBlend. You can play along next week using #Underrated80sBlend, when we'll debate our favorite movies from the 1980s that we think don't get enough appreciation. At the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, ASCAP members' music amplified the impact of dozens of official festival selections. In this bonus episode of VERSED, we talk to another talented group of this year’s Sundance composers: Anne Nikitin (Lost Girls, directed by Academy Award nominee Liz Garbus), Dan Romer (Wendy, directed by Benh Zeitlin), Amanda Jones (Baldwin Beauty, directed by Thembi Banks), Alex Weston (Wander Darkly, directed by Tara Miele) as well as Ryan Miller of Guster who has scored several Sundance favorite films over the years (Safety Not Guaranteed, The Fundamentals of Caring). They share their experiences working with directors on their films and how Sundance has benefited their careers.

As you may have noticed, Film Comment went to the Sundance film festival in Park City, Utah. We recorded a series of podcasts and now at last we have our thrilling conclusion. For our final episode in Park City, FC Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold was joined by Manohla Dargis of The New York Times; Amy Taubin, contributing editor at Film Comment; and Devika Girish, our assistant editor. We talked about several movies including Eliza Hittman's Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, Benh Zeitlin's long-awaited Wendy, and the documentary On the Record about accusations against hip hop mogul Russell Simmons. Plus, Miranda July's Kajillionaire, Michael Almereyda's Tesla, and more. For more on Sundance, be sure to listen to our previous podcasts and check our website for features. Let's go now to our conversation.
Episode 45 Fresh Perspective explores "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (2012), directed by Benh Zeitlin and starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry. This is part one of our two-part “Girl Power”-themed discussion, in celebration of strong performances by young African American actresses and magic realism in film. Presented in the shaky but imaginative perspective of a child, this film pulses with the life blood of an impoverished and hurricane-torn but content Delta community free of the barriers of civilized society. The heart of the film beats with the will power of a young girl mature beyond her years as she tries to piece together a dysfunctional domestic life with fragmented memories and comes to profoundly understand the nature of life and death. Beasts of the Southern Wild Podcast Overview: Anyone who has seen the popular indie film “Beasts of the Southern Wild” has had the chance to step into the magical backwoods world co-created by Benh Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar. It is a dark and fantastic place, populated by larger-than-life characters who take viewers on a visceral […]
On today's show, we talk to filmmaker and producer Michael Gottwald. Michael graduated from Wesleyan University in 2006 and went to work on a number of film and video projects - including producing Big Freedia's video for "Y'All Get Back Now" - before beginning production on the film Beasts of the Southern Wild with writer and director Benh Zeitlin. Since it's debut last year, Beasts has racked up a number of accolades including the Caméra d'Or award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and four Academy Award nominations at this year's Oscars.A couple week's ago, Michael stopped by Andy's apartment in Harlem to chat with the lads. We eulogize Roger Ebert, talk about going back to visit your high school, learn about attending the Oscars, discuss the pathology of indecisiveness, and get a visit from Andy's weird landlord!Check out our 100th episode live in May at UCB East on the 7th with Sam Seder (Majority Report, Bob's Burgers), indie rock band Parquet Courts and musical guest Dan Friel (Thrill Jockey) + more! In the meantime subscribe on iTunes and leave a review. And why not follow Andy and Mark on Twitter?
In this second part of our Best of 2012 pod, Luke Annand and Daniel Redenbach discuss his selections for the best music of 2012 as well as a few soundtrack selections.
While we try to have a regular scheduled program out every Sunday night/Monday morning, sometimes life gets in the way. Not to worry, we'll have your podcast episode 106 out later this week. In the meantime, the 2013 Academy Awards roar ever closer, and we roar back! BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, directed by Benh Zeitlin, and starring Quevenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry. An independent film, cast with inexperienced actors who leave it all on the screen in this heartfelt drama/fantasy (sort of). So get yourself some fried gator and prep your shanty for the storm! It's time to commit MASS MOVIECIDE!
This week: Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk does some extreme couchsurfing… “Beasts of the Southern Wild” director Benh Zeitlin on axe-painting… Controversy-courting essayist Katie Roiphe offers advice… author Susanna Moore dines in wartime Berlin… Brendan learns the difference between jerks and Ethels… and SF band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down give us a tune that gets you up, keep you up. Plus the history of a New-Wave Band Aid, the science of Xmas music, and sherry wine: it’s not just for Grandmas anymore.
Oops! It's Sunday night & I'm posting a mix called Sunday Morning Music. Oh well, play it next Sunday while reading the paper with a cup of coffee. This is the fourth in the Sunday morning series. It follows a similar pattern - some ambient, some vocal tunes, some jazz - all of it nice & relaxing. Perfect for a Sunday morning. This morning I was actually able to sip coffee out on the deck(shown in the pic). Not bad for the 11th of November in Wisconsin. Two of my favorite cuts in the mix are the two tracks(End of the World & The Smallest Piece) from the soundtrack of "Beasts of the Southern Wild." I'm o very fond of the cuts from Geoffrey Oreyma & Andrew Bird. The latest release from Andrew Bird will definitely be on my year-end,best-of list. Enjoy.
