In the week that the general election was called, I bring you a timely conversation about some of the questions an incoming government needs to grapple with. Meena Kumari Wood is a former HMI and leader of FE colleges who now works across the British and International Education sectors. She held senior leadership positions in English schools and Further education colleges, including as Principal of a secondary academy and Principal of an Adult College. As a former adviser to the DfE and currently as an International Education Consultant, Meena emphasises the importance of placing learners' aspirations and needs at the heart of curriculum. Meena has authored two books - Assessment of Prior Learning & Bilingual Learners (1995) and Secondary Curriculum Transformed: Enabling All to Achieve (2020). Secondary Curriculum Transformed argues for an equitable and diverse knowledge and skills based English curriculum, preparing young people for the changing global landscape of society and employment. She was recently appointed to the advisory board of the Chartered College of Teaching. This is a fascinating conversation in which we discuss curriculum reform, the incredible journey Meena and her family made to mode to this country in the 1960s, the way in which English education is very insular and would benefit from a little learning from other countries, and flying the flag for FE - Further Education - something we don't talk about enough. SENCOs face lots of challenges in their role, one significant one being many headteachers' lack of understanding of the role. Traditionally, becoming a headteacher followed a career pathway, progressing from teacher to deputy head, and finally to headship. During this, detailed SEND training was often overlooked which has led to an awful lot of misconceptions and lack of awareness among headteachers on the vital SENCO role. This has led to SENCOs feeling frustrated from not being heard or understood. In today's episode, we hear from an experienced SENCO who has worked with 11 headteachers over 23 years – Lynn How. Lynn joins Dale to discuss ‘Strengthening the SENCO-Headteacher Partnership'. In the discussion we explore: Barriers to headteacher engagement  Types of headteacher (broadly speaking…) What SENCOs want their heads to know Ideas to get them onside  Listen to hear practical ideas and strategies that SENCOs can implement straight away to support their relationship with their headteacher and align priorities. ONVU Learning is a 360-degree video lesson capture system that helps teachers reflect, collaborate and analyse their entire teaching and learning process. It creates a community space where teachers can share best practice and learn easily with their coaches and peers. When Matt was an Ofsted inspector, he decided that something drastic needed to change in the way we both judged and developed teachers.Teacher CPD was always something that was ‘done to' teachers and not ‘done by' them. For this episode, special guest Sufian Sadiq joins hosts Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner to discuss CPD, community engagement, and leadership in education. The conversation focuses on the interplay between meticulous planning and passionate engagement. It is clear throughout the conversation that Sufian has mastered the ability to engage and plan to make schools, communities, and learning thrive.   In part one of this episode, the group discusses Sufian's role at the Chiltern Teaching School, primarily the CPD they provide and the community stewardship they take on in the communities they serve.  In the second part of the episode, the trio discusses the true definition of community engagement, particularly understanding the community you serve. As Sufian explores, DEI is a significant part of his work. Often overlooked factors in those conversations include discussions of class and background.  The episode closes by discussing the difference between knowledge acquisition and aspirational curriculum. Sufian explores that when given the right tools and resources, you can create learning environments for students to thrive. However, if you engage students and understand their backgrounds, you can begin to inspire them to broader long-term success.  As Emma points out, adding an interpersonal approach to learning adds a sustainable element to every lesson. There may be days when a lesson doesn't particularly engage every student; however, when thinking and teaching aspirationally, you can connect with every student.  About the participants:  Sufian Sadiq is the Director of the Teaching School at Chiltern Learning Trust, responsible for overseeing two regional Hub areas in the South East of England. Chiltern Teaching Schools are one of the largest providers of CPD to the sector nationally. He is a passionate activist within the educational landscape around race, equity, and inclusion. Sufian is a Fellow and Board Member of the Chartered College of Teaching and a Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors Fellow. He plays an active role in numerous charitable organizations as a Trustee and holds key governance roles within educational organizations. He regularly contributes to conferences and CPD sessions locally and nationally and is busy working in schools and colleges across the UK and around the world. This episode offers advice, practical tips and inspiration for teachers who are thinking about taking on leadership roles within schools and for those already climbing the leadership ladder. Three experts discuss why teaching staff should aspire to leadership and the different pathways and roles within middle and senior leadership. What kind of skills are needed for leadership? How can teaching staff – including early career teachers – develop these skills and wider leadership experience? How can they dip their toe in the water and “have a go”? What kind of leadership opportunities can teachers look out for? We discuss different pathways, specialisms and CPD options, including via the Chartered College, WomenEd, National Professional Qualifications and other routes. What are the common barriers to leadership aspiration and how can we overcome them? And how can schools make middle and senior leadership attractive and more diverse? This is one of two episodes focused on career conversations. The second, out on March 22, will focus on wider career pathways and progression within the secondary school. Jo Palmer-Tweed has worked in education for the past 26 years and she has packed so much in during this time. She has been an advanced skills teacher in Drama, a primary headteacher in an improving schools team, an advisor at the Department for Education, the Strategic Lead for the Expert Subject Advisory Groups (which is a group of 300 independent experts across the UK), and on top of all that she is currently the Executive Director of Essex and Thames Primary SCITT. Jo is also a founding fellow of The Chartered College of Teaching and is an advisor for a range of organisations in the UK, including The Teacher Development Trust, The Goodall Foundation and she is a Trustee for The Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education. On top of that, if she can find any spare time that is, she also works as an actor and voice over artist. With a CV like that you can see why Jo has so much of interest to say to anyone who is passionate about teaching. In this podcast we discuss ... Why you need to be subversive to make sure the curriculum is as good as it can be for the children you are teaching. The need to accept nothing, question everything and follow your gut. Do what is right for the pupils in your class. How acting and teaching complement each other. Both need you to make a human connection with people. The fact that the best teachers have something that makes them stand out in the classroom. They have a presence that makes students want to look at them and connect with them. Why intuition is such a vital part of teaching. The need to have your pupils' best interests  at heart and the desire to help them develop into a well-rounded person. The fact that there are hoops you have to jump through as a teacher, but there are many you can skirt around so you do what is best for the children in your care. Why teaching practice may not be really enjoyable, but if you're with a great teacher you can learn so much from observing what she does to be successful. The importance of putting time into lesson preparation. It is worth every second because then you can be really confident in the classroom. Over time you get faster at planning so do the ground work and you will reap the benefit in class. Why tricky classes are often the outcome of a teacher not getting the learning climate right for the children they are teaching. The value of learning to change what you're teaching if something is not working. It's tricky to do when inexperienced but it is so beneficial that it is a skill well worth learning. Why learning the science behind learning and pedagogy is vital. When this is blended with great planning and your own intuition you can achieve great learning outcomes. The importance of creativity, even though it is much neglected and underrated. There must be space for things that aren't planned if you are going to excite and motivate children and get the most out of every lesson. And there's lots more, including Jo's first nativity production, which was eventful to say the least, and must have been the basis for the film, 'The Nativity'! You can connect with Jo on ... The school traces its origins to the middle ages. Today it is heavily oversubscribed with outstanding academic results and extracurricular breadth. It counts two Olympic gold medallists and a Nobel Laureate amongst its current alumni. During the nine years of his headship the school has grown in size and global reach, welcomed Sixth Form girls for the first time, and given priority in admissions to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school's last boarding inspection said: “Leaders and managers show exceptional levels of competency and compassion.” Chris works closely with the Boarding Schools Association and the Grammar School Heads' Association. He was Founding Chair of the North North West Maths Hub which works with 300 schools across Lancashire and Cumbria. He writes on school leadership, and has published numerous resources for A-level geography students on environmental change and natural hazards. Chris was previously Deputy Head of the Perse School, Cambridge, as that school grew rapidly and became fully coeducational. He gained his degree and PhD in physical geography from Cambridge University, worked for a water company, and has served as church trustee and warden. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and member of the Chartered College of Teaching. Born in South America, he is still working on his Spanish.
