In this episode I'm speaking to Jennifer Webb. Jenny is nothing short of a legend in English teaching after writing a number of hugely beneficial books ranging from how to teach reading and writing to metacognition as well as grammar instruction for secondary professionals. On top of this, she is a constant source of insight via her in person and virtual CPD events, which encompass advice on almost every element of secondary academic life imaginable.Following what has been an incredible couple of years for English teachers around curriculum development, I wanted to ask Jenny a number of questions about how she, the schools she works with and the departments she advises have interpreted these new ideas. We discuss:What Jenny thinks of organising the curriculum by concept as opposed to earlier approaches through theme or task type. How Jenny feels about the government's pledge to improve oracy in schoolsThe extent to which kids need to learn to learn or be more meta-cognitively awareWhen considering text choices through an unapologetically ambitious lens, does Jenny mean more full texts, extracts or something else? And finally, Teach like a Writer offers insights into how English happens in an authentic context. To what extent does Jenny think kids need to be assessed by producing a text that resembles the ‘real thing' in English. Thanks again to Jenny for offering so much insight about many of the most popular topics for discussion around at the moment. In addition to this, I hope she realises the massively positive impact she has had on the profession as well as the many ideas she she has shared that make the job all the more effective and therefore enjoyable on a daily basis. If you want to be kept up to date on when educational chat like this happens, then be sure to subscribe to the podcast and/or follow me on Twitter @chrisjordanhkLinks:Jenny's booksJenny's (free) CPD

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
The topic of weight and body image is more prevalent in today's society than ever before. Every day we are bombarded with messages that convey the thin ideal and encourage us to strive for certain body types. Sadly, what is often overlooked is the harmful impact of these societal expectations, especially on people who don't fit the narrow definition of beauty. Our guest for this episode is Dr. Sarah Pegrum, a clinical psychologist, ACT peer-reviewed trainer, and author of the groundbreaking book "Break the Binds of Weight Stigma." Sarah provides an insightful perspective into the role of weight stigma and anti-fat bias in our culture, as well as how the wellness and health industries perpetuate these prejudices for their own gain. We discuss how this, in turn, leads to shame and consequent unhealthy behaviors and underline the importance of analyzing the "obesity epidemic" narrative more critically, as it is often more complex than it is often portrayed. Tune in for this empowering conversation on breaking free from body image struggles using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and start embracing life to the fullest! Listen and Learn: Sarah's experience putting this book out into the world and her fears of being a voice on the topic of weight stigma and body image How weight stigma manifests itself in the media and everyday conversation Weight stigma and the negative impact it has on mental and physical health How does the sense of belonging and fitting in pertain to weight stigma? How our personal learning history may contribute to issues surrounding body image How we get into patterns of avoidance and control and how that can be problematic The emotional impact of weight stigma How important is it to feel positive about your own body to have a healthier relationship with it? How to apply the acceptance part of acceptance and commitment therapy when we aren't feeling so positive about our bodies Sarah's words of wisdom for people consumed by thoughts of body criticism What needs to change at the cultural level in terms of weight stigma and discrimination? Climate change is making wildfires across Canada, the US and other parts of the world more vicious and long-lasting, as landscapes are destroyed and harmful smoke from the fires is spreading thousands of miles away. Today, we're going to learn about the worrying impact the fires are having on our air quality and how we can protect ourselves from inhaling particles that could have as detrimental an impact on our health as smoking cigarettes. Our experts are molecular filtration specialist Jennifer Webb who lives at the epicentre of one of the worst affected places, California, and Jon Holmes, who is Camfil's National Account Manager in Canada. He's known as ‘The Filter Guy' for his passion about managing IAQ to protect our health. It also puts into practice Camfil's knowledge and expertise built over more than half a century and that it is eager to share with its peers and wider audiences to improve people's lives. Our Vision : Clean and healthy Indoor Air should be a Human rightOur Mission: We want all companies and organisations to put clean and healthy indoor air on the agendaCamfil believes that real change can only happen through collaborative effort and wants your organisation to join the clean air movement and community. Start your clean indoor air journey today!CAO Website: https://www.chiefairgonomicsofficer.com/ CAO Linkedin Group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12679402/QUOTESIn California we've just had longer and worse droughts. Then, the temperatures from climate change are rising everywhere. We get more and more of these hot days, which means even a small fire just gets worse. - Jennifer Webb A long time ago a customer asked me “Isn't it okay? Just like when kids play with dirt they get used to the microbes and this kind of thing to have a better immune system?” But the human lung wasn't designed to get stronger with particulates in it, it's just not designed that way. - Jon Holmes Air quality index is based on six compounds called criteria air pollutants, particulate matter, particularly the PM 2.5. They are all really worrisome because when you're breathing these gases, they're so permanently damaging to your lungs. And in fact, with ozone they will call it getting a sunburn for your lungs. - Jennifer Webb To put the numbers in perspective, in terms of AQI of say 150. That's equivalent to smoking seven cigarettes. based on standing outside for that entire period of time. In New York City, the AQI was 300, so that's 14 Cigarettes worth of particulate just by exposing yourself to the outdoors. - Jon Holmes Instead of snow days in Canada, you end up with smoke days in California, where everybody's just canceling activities for the common good of the people. - Jennifer Webb Making your workplace a clean indoor air shelter is good for business. It's great for people, but it's also good for profit, because you're gonna have happier, healthier workers that can certainly do a better job. - Jon Holmes Using a filter that's got higher capacity is an investment, but they can make it through a wildfire season if they've got a high enough capacity filter. - Jennifer Webb KEYWORDS#wildfires #mervfilter #cleanair #airquality #particulatematter

Emotions lie deep within each of us. Hidden from outside view yet powerful and busy activations that twist and turn inside ourselves. They drive our behaviors and our choices. We aren't always honest about what we truly feel because we are unsure and unwilling to evoke unknown reactions from those around us. An internal pressure cooker can result. Boiling with more ferocity as time uncontrollably creeps forward. Either that dangerous steam is released healthily or it explodes pushing decisions that are devastatingly final and entirely irreversible. Listener, the story you are about to hear is tragic and horrifying. Not everything is as it seems. The kind of individual who could carry out this crime is not one you want walking the streets. A person who is willing to do the unthinkable to protect their reputation. A complete lack of responsibility and unwillingness to face consequences leads to a shocking and brutal decision. It was a dark and devilish plan that failed miserably. Black Label Episodes AND Ad-Free episodes are now available on Apple Podcasts Premium. Visit us online. Find us on all podcasting platforms. Summary of the article titled A place-based model for understanding community resilience to natural disasters from 2008 by Susan Cutter, Lindsey Barnes, Melissa Berry, Christopher Burton, Elijah Evans, Eric Tate, and Jennifer Webb, published in the Global Environmental Change journal. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see a framework for disaster resilience of place model. This article investigates and proposes a comparative assessment for disaster resilience at the local or community level with a set of variables for easier implementation. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: There is considerable research interest on the meaning and measurement of resilience from a variety of research perspectives including those from the hazards/disasters and global change communities. The identification of standards and metrics for measuring disaster resilience is one of the challenges faced by local, state, and federal agencies, especially in the United States. This paper provides a new framework, the disaster resilience of place (DROP) model, designed to improve comparative assessments of disaster resilience at the local or community level. A candidate set of variables for implementing the model are also presented as a first step towards its implementation. You can find the transcript through this link. What wast the most interesting part for you? What questions did arise for you? Let me know on twitter @WTF4Cities! I hope this was an interesting episode for you and thanks for tuning in. Have you ever wondered why people-centric organisations are also high performing organisations? Do you ask yourself how organisations can move from a repressive command-and-control style and build trust with employees, especially after the great resignation? Do you think that it's high time that employee experience becomes a key priority for organisations, as is customer experience at least or even higher? In today's episode 92 of the Meaningful Work, Meaningful Life podcast, my guest is Jennifer Webb de Comarmond. She is an entrepreneur passionate about HR, the future of work, and helping businesses grow through their only asset: people. Her company, Proactive Talent Solutions, is the leading recruitment company in Mauritius. In our conversation, Jennifer explained why it's hard for organisations to attract and retain high performers and shared the simple 5-step framework that has worked for her organisation and the clients she helped. She believes that a good job can transform a person and that the right person can transform a business. Find out more about this episode and the resources mentioned at www.francinebeleyi.com/podcast.

Rural counties in Western North Carolina are vaccinating first responders. BPR went to a mass COVID-19 vaccination in Jackson County. A cold wind blows outside the Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee. But it hasn't stopped officers, firefighters and first responders from lining up to receive their COVID-19 vaccines. "There's actually been a good turn out. It was actually real smooth once we got in line." That's Kent Davis, a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office. He's worked in law enforcement for more than 35 years. "I have elderly parents so I was concerned for them. I think if you care about people at all than you wouldn't want to spread it," said Davis. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office had to close for a week this month because of an increase in COVID-19 cases locally. Davis felt it was a good idea for him to get the vaccine because he is in contact with so many people as part of his job. Jennifer Webb agrees. She is a volunteer firefighter. "Because we come
When it comes to most exam subjects, it seems fairly automatic that revision – for GCSEs at least - is mostly about ways you can retain facts and figures. For many revising English Literature mostly comes down to creating a bank of quotes. And all to often, preparing for English Language is an afterthought on the basis “I speak English, what's to revise?”. But given that Maths and English Language are often required passes for further education, there must be more to it than that. This week we are looking at revising for English. Nathan McGurl, founder of The Study Buddy is talking with Jennifer Webb. Jenny is currently Assistant Head at a large inner-city comprehensive school in Leeds, and has been a Head of English. She's a blogger, speaker and author of “How to Teach English Literature: Overcoming Cultural Poverty” and recently “Teach like a Writer”. Jenny also delivers professional development sessions to hundreds of teachers every month. Throughout this episode, Jenny offers insights around the significance of English Language as a subject and a skill. She explores the opportunities to excel in English Literature. And shares clear, practical tips on how to help teens do well in their exams. Playroom Management is pleased to announce the signing of country rock band Diamonds & Whiskey for management representation. Combining sounds of the electric violin, swampy undertones and modern country rock riffs, Diamonds & Whiskey have carved out a clear path with keen storytelling lyrics and powerhouse harmonies. Diamonds & Whiskey is led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Webb. Her voice, a combination of parlor accoutrements and refined beauty, ranges from rebellious in the “Heartbreak Queen” to fragile in “Wasted on Love” to haunting in “25 to Life”. In “Muddy Water,” a celebrated international hit, Webb’s oozing confidence glides along the slide guitar. Playroom Management Principal Eddie Z is excited to help the group accomplish its goals. Diamonds & Whiskey have garnered several Carolina Country Music Awards, as well as radio play for “Muddy Water” in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and several states. Z’s priority is to continue the momentum and secure bigger opportunities. “I’ve known Eddie Z for few years now and I’ve always admired how he handles business and what he’s been able to accomplish,” Webb said. “There’s a line in ‘Muddy Water’ that says, ‘I can see through muddy water.’ I think in the music business it’s important to seek out a team that believes in you as much as or more than you believe in yourself. Eddie and Playroom Management make things clear; you get exactly what’s promised with him. This is the next piece in the puzzle for us.” “We’re very excited to add Diamonds & Whiskey to our management roster,” Z said. With so many musicians pivoting plans and goals for 2021, it’s going to be a challenge. Jenny doesn’t back down from challenges, nor do I.”

We're back on the road, and have finally got some pupils on the podcast! For this episode, recorded back in July (hence the frequent references to the summer holidays, now a distant memory), we popped down the road to Eastern High School in Cardiff, taking over a room in their shiny new building to interview four special guests. Georgina Saunders was mentioned in one of the regular slots back in season 1, and now gets the chance to appear in person to tell us about how she pulled off the impressive feat of being the student teacher who took forty pupils to the Hay Festival to develop their love for all things to do with reading. She's joined by Eastern High's librarian, James Emery, who was a vital part of the team who brought it all together. They've got plenty of tips for anyone who can see the value for pupils of putting on something like this, but can't imagine how they'd survive the experience! For good measure, we've got two wonderful pupil guests who went on the trip, who tell us about everything from LGBTQIA+ literature to gothic fiction, the joys of tidying the library and the lovely smell of new books. If you want to find out more about the Hay Festival, their website is at www.hayfestival.com. Huge thanks to Eastern High School (EasternHigh.org.uk) for hosting us for the recording of this episode and making our four guests available. The books recommended in this episode were The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach, Circe by Madeline Miller and How to Teach English Literature: Overcoming Cultural Poverty by Jennifer Webb. I first heard today’s guest when she appeared on Rebecca Scritchfield’s Body Kindness podcast, and I couldn’t wait to get her on the show! We’re talking about body image in the perinatal period and why we should be talking more about it. Dr. Jennifer WEbb is an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Science and a core member of the Health Psychology Ph.D. program clinical faculty at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She received her baccalaureate degree in Cognitive Neuroscience from Harvard, went on to complete her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychologist at the University of Southern California, and did her postdoctoral fellowship training in Clinical Health Psychology at Duke Integrative Medicine. Her particular emphasis involves the enhancing of the integration, dissemination, and accessibility of evidence-based, mind-body approaches to strengthen embodied self-regulation, positive body image, and wellbeing among women during the developmental transitions of young adulthood, pregnancy, and the postpartum. Show Highlights: How researchers are playing “catch up” in the field of body image and how it’s affected by mood and anxiety during milestone periods How negative body image 3 months postpartum and during pregnancy can increase the chances and severity of depressive symptoms later on The definition of body image: how we think and feel about our bodies, how they move, and how they function The impact of sociocultural pressures and the media and social media messages that we get during pregnancy and postpartum times Western notions of what pregnancy and postpartum body should look like: a narrow portrayal, thin ideal, and a constrained approach Why we need more cross-cultural research across diverse groups of women Obsessiveness around body image can even come from well-meaning healthcare providers The concepts of body surveillance and disordered eating The importance and impact of conversations with healthcare providers, which offer a huge opportunity to help with the reframing process A “health at every size” perspective and non-dieting, weight-neutral understanding Fighting against the “get your body back” messages that our society gives women during the postpartum How researchers define the elements of positive body image: Appreciating and accepting the body as it is Respecting the body through active self-care Protecting the body from negative messages What it means to show acceptance to ourselves and our bodies as we go through changes Lisa Rubin’s research on women during pregnancy and how appreciation for our bodies can help during pregnancy and postpartum and become a lifestyle commitment How mind-body practices can help How Jennifer’s research suggests that mindful self-care was negatively related to negative body image and depressive symptoms in a sample of women Other ways to support women: intervention work, collaboration, guided self-help, and a focus on wellbeing and not diet culture Resources: Body Kindness by Rebecca Scritchfield Breathe, Mama, Breathe by Shonda Moralis Mindful Motherhood by Cassandra Vieten Books by Dr. Marjit I. About the Lab The Integrative Positive Psychology Research Lab in Mindfulness, Body Acceptance, Culture & Health (MIND-BATCH) at UNC Charlotte studies socio-cultural risk and protective factors (e.g., positive body image, ethnic identity, marginalization stress, weight stigma) that may contribute to and/or mitigate ethnic minority and gender disparities in cardiometabolic health in women with a particular emphasis on the developmental transitions of college, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. The lab also has a strong interest in researching the application of integrative mind-body approaches (including the practices of yoga, mindful and intuitive eating, and self-compassion) and Health at Every Size® principles towards optimizing a more holistic experience of health and well-being in culturally-diverse groups.
